When your Thai friends come over to harvest it in the spring--and you don't care!!! We have 17 foot tall shoots on our yellow groove this year....of course that's not the ones they're harvesting. BUT
Does that sound like a post from Indiana? LOL...

It sure doesn't sound like Indiana! Do you have a picture of it? Did you use any overwintering methods? I'm interested in bamboo! I bought some black bamboo last summer from a member here and it made it through the winter without covering it. I was concerned as it was newly planted. We did bunch it up and surround it with hay.

Sounds pretty awesome! Props for defying nature! However, I still must say....

here in nj people give it away. with no winter protection it really does grow out of control. i think the money the garden centers ask for it is out of control. i guess they know you wont be going back for more.

I understand the fear of it! We lived amidst the Kudzu in Georgia and now that I think about it ... I think the bamboo down there was golden bamboo and is on the invasive plant list for the state. Even wisteria is on it! The Kudzu and wisteria was beautiful but just bulldozed everything in it's path.
I didn't realize that kind of bamboo grew up north!
I'm growing some "Moso" in pots at the moment... and "Robert Young" in the ground right now... If you want to have it that bad just dig out and install a 2' deep and inpeneterable layer of protection such as cinder block or super heavy plastic... and hope for the best..:ha:

i did the real heavy poly barrier. it was a pain but hopefully it will work. the guy i got my bamboo from had a grove that must have been 60x140. he was trying to find enough people that would take it for free that he could make it smaller without paying some one to do it. i took 22 clumps and didnt put a dent in it. no idea what type it is but i see a lot of it around that must be the same. the largest was probably a little over 2" in diameter and a little more than 30' tall. i didnt take any of the largest, i figured the culms were near the end of thier lives, but the stuff i took still hung 8' off the end of my 18' trailer. i bought some p.bissetti last year at a flower sale i have that in 2 pots. my mother in law is a plant lover, she picked a huge pot out of the trash in her development a few years ago, i just took it over last week and split it into 3 24" pots. i think it is also p.bisseti and i have another small pot that i have no clue what it is. the black stuff is cool, but very expensive. one day my brother went to his town dump and saw a guy leaving with a trailer when he went to dump his shrubs he found a huge pile of chopped down black bamboo. i have my eye on a small grove at a house that is going to be demoed soon. it is about 12-15' tall. the stuff really is all over the place here in nj, i find liek anything else you really start to notice it everywhere when you get some.

I have a few Bissetii, Moso, Heteroclada, Vivax and Vivax Aureocaulus potted up and I'm willing to sell or trade them. Just call me at 585-797-4787 during the daytime or email me. My black bamboo is not even close to ready to divide yet.
As far as bamboos out of control, most bamboos don't run that far way up north where I'm at because of the short growing season and cool summers & brutal winters(perhaps zone 6a). Here's just a few shoot pictures to show some of what I have.

If you live in the south, you planted it. the only thing worse than bamboo is privet hedge. once it is loose you gotta fight on your hands
