It pays to inspect plants often. Grubs get to chomping on newly forming leaves. As the new leaf emerges, the damaged area, and usually the grub, are pushed up enough to grab the grub. This time I caught them before they burrowed back down. Didn't get pics of the grubby little b-stds cause I was too busy buttering the fence with 'em.

This happens every spring and usually on only 1 or 2 pstems. Don't spray - too much fun to catch 'em and squish 'em!!!

I thought they never left the ground unless I dug them up and feed them to the chickens. It looks like they like leaves in addition to roots...

I think he is probably referring to leaf rollers. Grubs mainly feed on plant roots.

So I can just spray with sevin dust so I dont' have to worry about that right? :^)

This is what the grubby bugger looks like. Typical white grub pic from the Univ of Fla reported to cause big problems with sugar cane.
Next time I'll get a pic and resist the urge to squash 'em.

hmm...they were actually grubs and not catterpillars? I wish you would have caught one so that I could have it identified.

Nick -- I'll be sure to get a pic if another one shows up. Sure looks like a typical white grub. All the feet were up close to the head. And yes, they show up in the soil too.
They sure love the Hua Moa. Every year at springtime one of them chomps on a new leaf while still embedded in the pstem. Now I know they like Ae Ae. Terrific!?

Are those things only in Florida? YIKES! That thing is FREAKY! Feel free to squish away. :( I'm sorry about your leaf but glad you got him before he went in for seconds. ACK!

Don't forget my arch enemy of the garden those little black with a yellow / orange stripe grasshoppers that turn into the huge yellow 4"-5" long grasshoppers from hell. Those guys can really do some damage in a short time and they appear in almost plague proportions. Like a real life Alfred Hitchcock novel.

Bob -- Had one of those lubbers land on my ankle while fighting a 2 foot snook on my 9 wt fly rod. Held onto the rod while stomping repeatedly to disloge the thing. Could feel the claws dig in thru the crew sock. The other guys fishing the C24 spillway got a good laugh at my dancing and yelling.
Full sized adult with more different colors than I ever saw on an insect. He was 3 to 4 inches long and scared the hell out of me. Thought it might bite, so I plucked him off and continued to play the fish. Forgot to strip set the hook and lost the snook up close.
This happened soon after moving to S Fla. After finding black racers in the pool area every week, bobcats walking the streets at night, corn snakes wrapped up in the banana flowers and then this thing...... Man! I was really freaking out cause the Fla critters were beginning to get to me.

Oh yea- the black racers were everywhere last year after all the frogs emerged from the rains. I've been seeing lots of frogs so I'm sure the snakes aren't far behind them.
I still haven't landed a Snook either. Actually caught a few in the net while shrimping but turned those loose hoping karma would reward me in the future with one on rod and reel.
Black Racer from last year......................
