Great job, Tony. How many bunches of bananas do you suppose you might get this year? I hear Brian's (NANAMAN'S) mom makes a great banana bread, you might ask him to share some recipes. Or you might start shopping for a dehydrator to help preserve your bountiful crops.

Maybe twelve this year.A dehydrator sounds like a plan.

Well I have banana issues. I just posted about my new bunch. I have two bunches on my Mysore plant and the newest one has reddish/brown fruit and doesn't look so good. The first bunch is finally fattening up and filling out but it took 8 months! The stem blew over during the winter and bent so I propped it and crossed my fingers. The fruit just recently started to plump with the warm weather but I don't know if after 9 months it will still be good. Why can't it be easy! :) Anyway, these are my two bunches I have right now but I'm not sure either one is looking good.

My california Gold is about to flower. It took almost 32 months from the pup,
while bananas need about 24 months in most cases in my place.
So my Cal. Gold was a little bit slow grower.

The banana is very compact and the highest point of the Pstem is about
130cm, so it is good for handling and strong against winds.

Thanks guys. Both pics had Auto Levels and a bit of cropping in Photoshop but that's it! I didn't even use a polarizing filter for these.
Both plants flowered at about 12-13 feet of P S. Both flowers are smaller than normal due to not being fed at all because I had planned to remove the stand but never did.
Chris did you get a new camera yet?

Hey Mitchel...no still look looking..saw some Black Friday deals on Canon Rebel T2i (I recall you said the Canons were good Cameras..then I got side tracked on lens speeds....)..it used to be so simple to research SLR's....

Rmplmnz,
Buy a Canon or Nikon DSLR, any model, and you will be happy with it (I'm sure other bands are fine, too). I suspect Mitchel knows a lot more about them than I do, but I've owned two Canon DSLR's (the original Canon "Digital Rebel" and now an Xsi) and have taken lots of underwater photos with them. Both were great. Even the pros I've talked to say you really don't know anything more in terms of the sensor. It's all about quality "glass". Buy good lenses and the only thing that will stop you from taking good images is your understanding of the basic principles of photography (and Photoshop can help you "cheat"). Like Mitchel says, there is always something "better" coming along, but you know what, the lenses don't change very often and they are much more important that all the bells and whistles on the newer cameras.
That's my take. Go get more banana photos!
Cheers.

Thanks, some of the reviews complained about the "speed of the lenses" and recommended some series of lenses over others??

In general, more expensive lenses autofocus faster. That said, I've never found my entry level lenses to be any more annoying about focus speed than my more expensive ones. Maybe if you were a sports photographer it would be really important. I suspect that if you are upgrading from a non-SLR, you will be so thrilled with a dSLR you won't even think about lens focus speed. I started with the "kit" lens and then went from there.

Yes it's all about glass and that's where you will spend most of your money, or should anyway.
When they talk about fast glass they are simply referring to the max aperture size. Smaller number = bigger opening = more light hitting the film (sensor) equals the ability to use faster shutter speeds and lower ISO to avoid grain (digital noise). It also allows for better control over the DOF (Depth Of Field) Wide open apertures like 2.8 or bigger like 1.4 will produce a very shallow area of focus or DOF. I use this with most of my dog portraits or flower pictures to blur the background making to the subject the center of attention.
In general the bigger the aperture the more money you spend, especially with wide angle or long lenses. So a lot of camera shopping comes down to your budget and what you are looking to use the gear for. You will find better deals on used Nikon/Nikkor glass than Canon. Canon bodies are also a little more pricey. Most people in the know these days say you can't tell the difference in image quality between the two brands using comparable equipment so buy what fits your budget.
Hope that helps to explain fast glass.

The flower is taking its time emerging but the weather here has cooled down to the high 60s this week and last week. All my plants have slowed their growth. Now I will have a couple months of waiting for the fruit to ripen. Next summer I expect I will have three plants blooming at the same time since I have 3 five foot high Manzanos on the same mat as this one.

Now you might be thinking to yourself that "wow, that's an unimpressive bunch of AeAes" and from a variegation standpoint I would agree. The idea that AeAes leaves revert to mostly green in basic, clay soils is indeed correct in my experience. I've started amending with coffee grounds, bbq and fireplace ash, and other organics which has brought out more variegation in the small to medium size pups. Upside is that all that extra chlorophyll seems to have helped their growth, these things are beasts... almost touch the power lines. I just hope my bananas are stripey. :bananas_b:08:

Well, after years of feeling inadequate, I am finally able to post in this thread. My first banana flower!! I have arrived!! My Ensete glauca has thrown 2 flag leaves, and today I found the flower bud!! But I now can feel the pain of others, as I wanted to see this guy get some real size this summer. So I guess I'll have to look for an inevitable replacement.

Just gorgeous, Howard!!! Congratulations to you. :goteam:
I know you must be thrilled! :D
: )
My dwarf Brazilian is apparently getting ready to bloom. I was looking for a flag leaf, but
the one I saw looked pretty much like a regular one, but about 1/3 the size of the others.
I was wondering if it was lacking some nutrients.
Flag leaf is the little one slightly left of center. Tilted the camera for better angle since
the other leaves were in the way.

Congrats Howard!!!!! Well done! Funny how you just never know when they're going to flower, especially in our cooler climates. Keep posting pictures , I want to watch the whole process. Mine got huge before it flowered but I never got to watch it since the bud came so late in the season.

This plant is not the 'Jamaican Red'/'Cuban Red'/'Dwarf Red' (which are all the same). Unfortunately, I've been trying to figure out just exactly what it is for a long time, and have shown photos to many experts and no one seems to have any real idea about it. It is quite common though in nurseries and botanic gardens all over the US.
One idea is that it is the 'Sumatrana x Gran Nain', which is itself somewhat of an enigma, but I'm not totally convinced that's what it is.

Indeed it is. I thought basjoo was yellow? Since I don't bring my basjoo inside for the winter, I guess I'll never see a flower as they die down to the ground every year. In any case, it'a a banana flower and fruit, my first, and I love it even if it's not the most colorful!

The red bleeding into the skin is similar to the once believed to be Ice Cream but later ID'd as Tall Namwah. Pretty...

I finally got a blossom on my three year old Ice Cream, at least I hope that is what it is as that is what I paid for. Here are some pictures. I know it is probably too late to get any ripe fruits from it here along the northern Gulf Coast but at least I know I can get it to bloom. I put some extra fertilizer to it when the flower started showing 2 weeks ago, some epsom salt and 34-0-0, about two cups of each and watered it in good to see if I could hurry things along. Good idea or not?http://img3.uploadhouse.com/fileuploads/14846/14846923b6b5925fe7a58763a5ae333ae76ef044.jpg (http://www.uploadhouse.com/viewfile.php?id=14846923&showlnk=0)

I heard that adding nitrogen fertilizer during fruiting can cause the fruit to rot. So that's probably not a good idea.

"Dwarf" Orinoco (it's 9.5' to the top of the peduncle) and Goldfinger (small at 7.5') are the first two to bloom for me. Unfortunately, it looks like the Goldfinger isn't going to make any fruit for me -- it didn't make any female flowers. This plant has had nutritional problems (boron deficiency and too little nitrogen), so I guess I'm not surprised. Maybe I'll get it right next year!
Here's a sequence of photos for the dwarf Orinoco:

Wonderful pictures everyone!!! Thanks for sharing!
Mark,
Your ''Dwarf'' Orinoco seems like Tall Orinoco to me as i see no dwarf characters on it like the characteristic short and wide leafs of dwarf cultivars. Its pups should flower at a great height with good water and fertilizer! :)

I agree, the "dwarf" 'Orinoco' is certainly not a dwarf, it is the normal tall 'Orinoco'.

Yes, I'd also reached that conclusion, that the "dwarf" Orinoco was regular Orinoco. It came from a reputable nursery, who got it from a reputable grower. Just goes to show how many errors there are in banana identification. Don't believe what the label says!
