Congrats on this nice bunch. Eye candy as most of your photos, but the scenic view in the background is pretty nice, too.

Finally Pisang Klotek is putting out an inflorescence.
This will be challenging with just two intact leaves. My experience is that the Mysore varieties are not as forgiving as Namwah and the fruits might not fill in well enough.

Congrats on this nice bunch.
Thanks and Good Luck on your PK.
I measured some of the fruit on that SL-3640, length 11.75".
I'm guessing this Veinte Cohol will be about 30 lb. & 220 to 240 fruit.

No this came from a neighbor who had them on his property when he moved there. I think the only correct things I got from Aloha Tropicals was Praying Hands. The other 10 were either wrong or weak plants that never made it. I have 2 other quite distinct Ele Ele variants. One is Polua, which I got from Angela Kepler, and is supposed to be the blackest variant. Another is a variant with more red and waxiness, which I'm guessing is Poni or Hinupua'a (shiny like hog grease in Hawaiian), as it has a more greasy look than any other cultivar I have.

Patupi, Dwarf Gros Michel, & FHIA-17, all planted in a row on the same day bloomed today. And 2 more of the Dwarf Manini or Vertically Challenged Manini also bloomed today (8 months). I really prefer growing this short variant and will be replacing all of the tall Manini. ;)

Think positive!!! Hey --- I once grew bananas back in New Jersey and then in NC before FL. Every year pot up the biggest pups and take indoors. In spring plant in ground after last frost. In fall dig up and pot up the main pstems. Grow indoors.
Keep this up till flowering size. When flower pops I would stick the pots in the garden bath tub with a sky light above. Last bunch I remember was 72 edible bananas. Good rule to follow --- stick to short height varieties and short cycle especially. Like Viente Cohol. It's nice to use the tub now and then. :ha:

Bananimal Thanks - How does VC taste and how long to flower? My Orinoco and namwahs usually require overwintering and bloom 2nd season if pstems survive winter.

A couple first time fruiters.
Pitogo, (finally!) after a few years and 2 other plants that were something else. Those tiny little fruit make me think it's the real thing, as the friend who gave it to me said.

At your location you will get one bunch a year. Take all pups and plant as separate mats. It's as they say --- the VC is one of the best tasting and very short cycle naners around.

Rob, what happened to the Greenwell Garden? I liked that place.
This Bishop museum which owns them decided to sell it, stating that it wasn't part of their mission. Of course that upset a lot of people, as it's a living museum, having been occupied by Hawaiians for hundreds of years, planted with dozens of species of endemic & indigenous plants, along with rare canoe plants, including their banana collection. It was left to them by Amy Greenwell specifically to maintain and preserve it. Instead it's being sold to infuse them with cash so they can do more stuff on Oahu, such as have a dinosaur exhibit, which of course was a critical aspect of Hawaiian culture, lol.
I was just glad I was there in January right before this was announced and got a few more keiki from unlabeled mats. Some of their banana cultivars exist in fewer than 10 locations. We also got a couple rare types into a tissue culture preservation project last summer.

It is nine feet tall where the flower comes out. I thought Brazilians were big. This is the second bunch, as this is the first pup of the original. Dwarf maybe? Anyway, excited to have a flower this time of year. Should make a nice raceme. (As of now, it's the only one I have big enough to flower. The next three pups are all about the same size, and should be of age in a couple months.)
I got a 1000 fingers banana plant pup from Florida Hills 07/08/2013. It is finally blooming. I should know soon if I have the correct plant.

This is a weird one given to me as "Ixino" but with no info on it. Thought it was a cavendish with its short, open petioles. Now that it's flowering it clearly isn't. Odd fruit shape. Male flowers with more pilali than any other I've grown. About 6' tall. Quite a lot of black on the plant. Perhaps some AA type? Reminds me of Veinte Cohol in terms of size, open petioles, lots of black but otherwise isn't based on the bunch appearance.

Another pic from today, June 9 2016. Brazilian pup#1. Looks like about 80 fingers, so far. I think there will be more, time will tell. The original was a TC which flowered in late November after only 9 months and had 65 fingers which took 5 months to ripen. They were small but good. Hoping these get larger and ripen quicker being it flowered in June and the pup is much larger than the original.

Finally done blooming. This is the first pup on my Brazilian. I ended up with 80 fingers, not as much an increase from the 65 on my original TC this pup came from, but I will take it, I guess. Hopefully they will get a bit larger this time, although it doesn't look like it will be a huge difference there, either. I have three more pups of the original which will likely flower in the next couple months as well, so there's that.

Your Dwarf Namwah sure looks like an Ice Cream, even more so than the one from Going Bananas.
I thought the same thing. That Namwa was also purchased from going bananas and it flowered at a height of 5 feet. The one I had labeled as ice cream from going bananas flowered at 9 feet but it most definitely appears to not be an ice cream. The photo of the Namwa fruit makes the fruit to be more blueish in color than they really are. The fruit is more silverish in color and very waxy.
I harvested the Namwa bunch about five minutes ago and will let you know what the fruit tastes like within a few days.

I've experienced some success and some failure over the last few months. After losing multiple bunches and mature pseudostems to a partially-formed funnel cloud in the wake of Tropical Storm Colin, the bananas are defiantly producing again. Although Colin signaled a bittersweet goodbye to my Tigua (ouch!), Pisang Ceylon, Pisang Raja, and Gros Michel bunches, I was able to ripen the entire wind-fallen bunch of SH-3640 pictured below. It weighed out at 73 lbs several weeks after the second picture, with nary a bruise on the bunch following its precipitous fall.

The Puerto Rican Morado was the first to drop a post-Colin bud. Tiny, tiny bunch. The Morado was hit hard by flooding in November and December of 2015, and I was a bit overzealous in pupping it, so I blame that.

WOW. Colin didn't seem like much, but it sure sounds like it was a lot for you. Sorry to hear of your losses. If you had expected more, you could have taken protective measures or simply cut the bunches and brought them in. Sad.

This should have happened a month ago, but my second pup on the D. Brazilian is popping out a flower. They finally started growing again a few weeks ago after way too much K back in June put them into suspended animation. I have two other pups from the original TC plant that will be flowering soon as well. If the bunch I have hanging that flowered in late May take the full 5 months the first bunch did, I will have 4 bunches hanging from the one mat in a few weeks.

The original TC bloomed at 8 feet, the first pup at 9 feet, this one measures in at 10 feet at the bloom.

I've been cussing this perhaps D Namwah for months; she just keeps getting taller and leaning to the east while laughing at my pleas for more effort on her part. Sure, I've done all that leaf studying (tried) but to no avail; she kept pushing out ever larger leaves whilst snickering at my attention. Fine. I gave up. Hey, I was 2 weeks overdue with DS and she's far beyond that time frame so obviously a dud. Just my luck!
Then the other day my now unwatched and totally ignored musa surprised me...

Well, time for an update on my Dwarf Brazilian mat... Pup one has a bunch hanging which we will likely be eating in a few weeks, pup two is flowering now and has 2 hands already and pup three now has a flower poking it's head out. They go counter clockwise around the mat. Pup four looks like it is now putting out it's 3 foot pre flag, so I may just end up with all four pups producing at once. I find that very cool.
Here is the whole mat, for reference...Please note the 5th pup growing vigorously there in the front. Will likely be an early spring bloom.

Well, time for an update on my Dwarf Brazilian mat...
That's not Dwarf Brazilian, it's regular (tall) Brazilian. The leaves are way too elongate for DB.

Well, here is the story... I bought this as a Manzano, but after my first bunch was hanging, Gabe took one look and told me Brazilian. I sent him another pic, and he reconfirmed it as Brazilian.
Dwarf Brazilian flowers at around 8-10 feet and has a dirty rachis and smallish fruit similar in size to Mysore, which is all true of these, except the rachis is nowhere near as messy as most people's pics, as the rachis only keeps some mess, but all the petals fall off and after 8-10 male sets, the rachis is clean after that.
Standard or tall Brazilian has a completely clean rachis and larger fruit, about 2/3 - 3/4 length fruits as well as fruiting in the 15-20 foot range. All these have flowered between 8-10 feet, so far.
I had not considered the leaves much before, I will do a little research and find out more.
I did some research, please see this thread... http://www.bananas.org/f2/dwarf-brazilian-12013.html

I wouldn't get too hung up on height. Tall varieties can fruit short under a variety of circumstances. It is possible that yours is not "Tall" Brazilian because 8-10' is very short for that variety, but is definitely not Dwarf Brazilian. It has the wrong morphology -- and morphology is really what defines dwarfism. Dwarfs have shorter and broader leaves than their parent variety. Yours does not have those dwarf morphology leaves. And dwarf Pome varieties have very persistent bracts down the whole length of the rachis.
It may be an intermediate height morph of the Pome subgroup and not true Brazilian. I also bought something as Manzano that turned out to be a Pome, much like yours, but taller. Dwarf Brazilian and regular Brazilian are not the only varieties in the Pome subgroup, and yours could be one of those other varieties. In my climate at least, fruit size is not different between tall and dwarf versions of Pome varieties.
Whatever your is, it looks great. Nice bunches at a manageable height. I was my non-dwarf Pome varieties fruited at that height!

Well, whatever they are, they seem cold hardy, fast growing and tasty, so I will be keeping them. We had a white roof and lawn last winter which knocked back a few weeds didn't bother it one bit. Had a bunch on and everything. Didn't even color the leaves. They taste similar to Mysore, only they are a bit bigger and not so closely bunched at the bottom.

On equally happy plants DB fruit are larger than Mysore. I also don't get a difference in fruit size between the dwarf and tall.

Huti (Shumba Nyeelu). Just an update with the yellow male bud. Just learned this is a M'shale cultivar. If it's a tasty as the Muraru M'shale then it's a winner. I think it has 8 hands and has grown much better than Muraru M'shale or Muraru Mulalu for me.

They are at a very easy height to deal with. I can easily reach the bottom of the bunch. I can't say I know the fruit sizes are different, but I had read somewhere, likely on here, that the full size had bigger fruits. I also remember from my honeymoon that the "apple bananas" I had in Kauai were more like Chiquita size. They were my first taste of a "different" banana. I bet I ate 50 of them in that week.

Steve, the pseudostem on your plant looks much too slender to be Dwarf Brazilian. DB is a much stouter plant than yours appears to be. Notice also how narrow the male bud is on yours, with very little imbrication. Yours in not DB.

Hello y'all,
I just read on a garden website that the flower should be cut off after fruit is set so it doesn't draw energy away from the fruit. There are a few small hands and the flower and stem continue stretching out.
Should I cut off the flower? or leave it?

It makes very little difference, if any in the fruit, but may make some small difference in weight if tipping is a problem. Be sure there is at least a foot of stem between the last bananas and the flower, otherwise the stem rots back and could kill your bananas.

...Be sure there is at least a foot of stem between the last bananas and the flower, otherwise the stem rots back and could kill your bananas.
I think this practice, which makes sense on the surface, doesn't actually work and isn't necessary. A common commercial practice to cut the rachis and flower bud off immediately below one or more fingers. Because the fingers are still growing, drawing water and nutrients, the rachis ("stem") remains alive and does not rot. If you cut the rachis above the flower, but leave a foot-long "tail" as you see sometimes suggested, that "tail" portion of the rachis will die because nothing is left to draw nutrients through it, actually encouraging rot. At least that's been my experience.

I do not have a lot of practical experience with this subject at present so I wanted to help based mostly on what others have said. I know I cut the bloom on my first bunch after just a few inches and it all turned out alright, but waited on my next two and they are both dying off, although most likely from some other cause yet to be determined ( See here: http://www.bananas.org/f310/new-issue-bananas-turning-black-dying-46868.html ) My last bunch I have left, I have not cut the bloom at all.
Your hypothesis makes sense to me. Especially since the commercial growers don't wait to cut...Given the time and enough banana plants, I will experiment and find out some stuff from experience. I have 11 varieties, so all I need to do now is water, fertilize and wait. :D

I'm posting a new update picture of the bananas today. I am inexperienced and need your kind input.
Do you see any yellow coloring?
Are they ripening?
What do you think?

They take months to ripen. Some only a couple or three months, others take 6 months or more... Like he said, be patient. Once one turns yellow, harvest the bunch and make a note of how long from flower to ripe for the next time.

The 10 & 11 foot Veinte Cohol produced bunches similar in size to the 8 foot plants, just takes longer. Every banana cultivar that we've evaluated so far has had better field production when grown in properly sized pots. It obviously effects the height of the plant but more importantly it effects the length of the vegetative phase which dramatically increases production. Our Verdin that produce at over 20' in ground are producing quality bunches at 8'.

There are a lot of ways to get a plant to flower at a shorter height, I've read how some club members here force a stress flower. But my experience with a plant flowering under stress is that the stress also effects the bunch and can produce a bunch with no fruit, similar to a banana flowering in a heavily shaded area.
Like I said in this post and have been saying for the past five years, growing a banana in a properly sized pot has it's advantages. The shape of the pot can also improve it's efficiency which will allow for a reduced size, but it's really about understanding roots or your root zone. A plant with unlimited spaced for it's roots can grow massive but it doesn't necessarily need to be massive to produce an acceptable bunch. By limiting your root zone to a proper size you then have control over the size of the plant, the duration of the vegetative phase, and also the bunch size.
when grown in properly sized pots. It obviously effects the height of the plant

Sonnycrockett: after the female flowers bloom out, check the male flowers (don't cut off the male bud): if they're persistent (don't fall off the rachis), there's a good chance it's rajapuri.
Also, keep us posted on how the bunch develops, if at all. I'm interested to see if you can get fruit to fully mature if all the leaves have died off the fruiting P-stem.
Apparently, the side pups will "feed" the developing bunch (be sure to keep developing side pups happy), but it seems most of the reports I've read about are from bunches that are already somewhat developed (ie. they flowered months before, leaves all got fried during the winter, next spring comes around, and the bunches mature). Anyone have experience with flowering a P-stem with no leaves and then getting all the fruit to reach maturity?

I actually had something from them turn out to be praying hands. My theory is they just ship whatever they have. My Monkey Fingers from them was a tall Brazilian, but one in which the fruit don't fill out. No idea what that other one of yours could be. Some more pics and info would help, showing petiole length and openness, height. Also, do the undersides of new leaves have any pink? Namwahs can have a very light pink which fades, while it's darker on Mysore types and doesn't fade as much. One of my thoughts is that your other might be a Mysore, but more pics might make be instead rule that out.

What makes this particular Variegated Dwarf Namwa mama special and that skinny little Variegated Dwarf Namwa pup below skinny is that there is a sibling pup that's the same height but is 3.1 times as fat with many more leaves.
So far it appears to be some type of Variegated Super Dwarf Namwa mutation and we should know in a few months if the trait is passed along to it's pups.

If they fall off without you pulling them off, then it isn't Rajapuri.

Uh-oh...What could it be then? It's all green and the stem is short and thick with relatively big leaves for its size. This one had 6 feet of stem before winter, which died back some and flowered immediately this spring at about 4'.

This is what it looks like today. After taking a closer look at it, the absolute bottom of the stem has a light pink tint to them, so they are not completely green stems. Also, the edge of the leaves have a thin pink line around the edge. Not nearly as pink as my Nam Wahs though.

Another flower coming out on the trusty old Brazilian type... It's been a very dry winter here, and even with the watering everybody's bananas look like crap this spring. Maybe that is why this one surprised me by flowering at only 9 feet when the last 3 were at 10, 10'6 and a little over 11', respectively. Ps is kinda thin as well. I must admit the mat needs some thinning too... But, in any event, here it is:

On the bright side, it looks like I will have a Namwah flower to post soon as the last leaf was 2 feet shorter than the rest.

Those are all different Cavendish cultivars and very similar in appearance. On average, DC would fruit at the shortest heights (typically 6-7', from what I've seen) and the other two would be a little taller and similar in height to each other, probably more in the 7-9' range. But growing conditions affect fruiting height so much that height isn't a completely reliable way of telling cultivars apart. If I recall correctly, DC and Grand Naine both have messy rachis, whereas Williams is mostly clean. I'd check that with Gabe.

After all this time and work I finally have something flowering that is NOT my Brazilian... It's my Namwah. I don't really care for that kind, but my wife liked them and they are a nice big plant, too so I kept it. Right now it's just a flag leaf, but I will post again later after it's done flowering. It was a little over a year old and is only about 8 foot, but it's a TC... Not a dwarf, either, so far as I know.

First off, thank you crazybanana for the opportunity to grow the real deal blue java! I acquired a very healthy sword pup around aug. 2015 and almost exactly 2 years later, that same pup is now producing a flag leaf! Here in Northern California, things take much longer to flower and mature, and if you don't get them to bloom at the right time, they won't make it.
Last year, I had an FHIA-1 american goldfinger bloom mid October and it's now ripening! However, I also had one bloom either late October or November (can't remember) and that one didn't make it at all.
Unless this variety finishes in 60 days, these bananas will need to endure our cold winter, and should they survive that, they'll likely ripen in early summer of next year. From what I've learned, if you live in a cooler climate and light frosts, as long as your bananas have a few months to thicken up, they can survive the winters. Again, this assumes you have mild frosts and not too many of them. Of course, you're also at the mercy of the weather: if we have a cold autumn and very minimal growth from now until winter, it's quite possible the bananas won't develop enough to withstand the cold winter temps. The goal is to get the fingers out of that young, "asparagus" stage and get them thicker/fatter. It appears the thicker and fatter the banana, the more cold they can tolerate.
For sure, this variety leans really hard so it has to be staked or tied up. I have some rope that I can tie to some railing to keep it in place, should be okay. Pretty excited to see the bloom, pictures online suggest this variety is really beautiful when in full bloom.

Mine just finished! 9 hands. On 2nd or 3rd set of male flowers. Such a pretty flower to watch!!! Ours are for sure the exact same!!! For sure 100% blue java!!
Also mine started with not many fingers on the first couple hands. I bet you have more on the rest! I am so surprised how much faster mine developed!!! I'm seriously shocked! I thought you was a little ahead of me!!! It's the heat here I guess been in the 90s daily! Extra high humidity also.
This flower seems to make so much nectar!! Anyone else notice that? Compared to other varieties. I have a picture of mine where 5-6 fingers on the same hand are just pouring nectar all at once.
Yours looks amazing! You always take the best pictures!!

thanks everyone!
Ty:wow, 9 hands?! Congrats, that's awesome!!!! Sounds like you have a beast of a plant flowering!
For sure, this blue java will take much longer to develop here in Northern California compared to 90+F, hot, humid Texas! . It's been in the mid 60's to low 70's here during the day, and mid to low 50's at night, much cooler than normal for this time of year. Given our poor weather this year, I'm not even sure this bunch will make it thru the winter, but we'll see. If anything, it'll be a great test on the cold hardiness of blue java: by the time frost hits, should this variety be truly cold tolerant, the bananas should be developed enough to tolerate mild, occasional frosts.
With regards to nectar production, it's difficult to tell because this time, I can't reach the flower for inspection, it's way too high up. Those pictures are taken from 9 or 10 feet below, it's a little bit deceptive.

This flower seems to make so much nectar!! Anyone else notice that? Compared to other varieties. I have a picture of mine where 5-6 fingers on the same hand are just pouring nectar all at once.
Yours looks amazing! You always take the best pictures!!
You were definitely right Ty, there's more fingers on subsequent hands! Photos taken 8/20/17, to recap, this is Musa Ice Cream aka Blue Java:

Here is my little African Red (photo taken yesterday). I took a quick look this morning between rain squalls (we're just west of Houston and Harvey won't leave), and the flower and hands (a second one has appeared) were absolutely covered with ants. Just sprayed Neem on a neighboring hibiscus because it was covered with mealybugs, and my entire garden is full of little black ants (not fire ants). I am worried that they may be herding aphids or something else that I can't see. Is it normal to see a flower and hands covered with ants? http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=62202 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=62186&ppuser=24513)

Ants are very normal around banana flowers. They love the sweet sap. The fire ants are very bad on fruiting varieties.

Hello 1st time poster here. We are wondering if anyone could tell us what type of bananas we have growing. We are 15 days on growing from 1st sighting. We are in the Memphis area and weather looks good for the next two weeks at least before getting cool. Highs in the 80's daytime and lows in the 60's.
Also when should we cultivate what we have?
Thanks in advance.

Musa Dwarf Brazilian-not the best pics for ID purposes, but can anyone confirm so far that this looks like Dwarf Brazilian? First flower opened 9/30/17, so if the winter isn't so harsh, these will most likely make it to maturity:
Sort of in a challenging position: my concern is the bananas will get beat up by the rail when it gets windy:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4484/23772336758_6838de5be2_c.jpg
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4445/36914855244_e0e0326845_c.jpg

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4480/23772335038_b7d2921780_c.jpg
Dwarf Brazilian(well, that's what I ordered) to the left versus Ice Cream to the right. For sure, it's a dwarf! The Ice Cream, sadly, is showing a flag right now. Last year, anything that bloomed late October or later rotted away. The latest bloom to have the bunch survive the winter was was Oct. 15 last year, hopefully this will make it too:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4510/36914854724_8045829901_c.jpg
Closer shots of the ice cream flag:

earlier bunch of Ice cream that bloomed Aug. 20th, 2017. Per crazybanana's suggestion, I've been pumping this plant with potassium and they do seem to be filling in quite well!
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4450/23772404558_1fb6d0aecb_c.jpg
and of course American Goldfinger decided to push out flowers at the very last minute. So many bloom so late, I'm trying to figure out how to time the pups so they flower during the summer. Given that heat hours vary from year to year, it's hard to time them. This American Goldfinger is borderline too late, but maybe we'll get lucky and have an extended summer to mild winter:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4474/23772437378_0c9731a824_c.jpg
another american goldfinger, better chance of making it through the winter since it's a bit more advanced:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4449/36954610413_a187d1740d_c.jpg
and just for fun, the main banana patch this year! These looked horrible earlier this year, but now you can't tell how much the cold damaged them from last winter:

GAH! So many bananas flowering when you don't want them to, but such is life. All photos taken 10/23/17:
FHIA 1 blooming from a 14' p-stem (approximately). Definitely the tallest p-stem I've ever had on this variety. If this makes it, looks like it'll have a nice yield:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4456/37885723691_e8470de8de_h.jpg
zoomed in a bit, same bunch:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4482/24033612988_1e1c068d4a_h.jpg
Got front row seats to anther very big FHIA 1 bloom! Usually, they're so high up you can only view them from below, but in this case, you can walk right up to it:

Pretty darn big:

Thank you!
What's interesting is that 9b in Northern California is completely different from 9b in Florida: we're talking temperate climate versus subtropical. We rarely see days over 70F during the winter here in Northern California, whereas in Florida zone 9b, it seems common to have many days over 70F during the winter. The light frost seems to be less harmful to developing bananas compared to long exposure to cold weather, even if it's above freezing.
Last year, all banana bunches that bloomed during the summer survived the long winter cold period, but bunches that formed late october and later didn't make it. It'll be interesting to see what happens this year, will report back. There's some bunches that bloomed this year in August, mid October, and now there's the Aeae as well as a Dwarf Brazilian bud forming now!

It is nine o'clock, And that i am sitting down ahead of the significant fireplace in my library, where the pine knots are fast turning into ashes. Why don't you? Certainly, Why don't you see the Outdated Year out and The brand new Year in? I'll pile more knots around the embers, and, leaning back again in my chair, will see how The 2 years are mortised jointly. Why should really I not help to appear right after these items, for I've experienced approximately eighty of these years, and every one of these chock stuffed with presents and goodness? I will have nothing to accomplish Together with the doleful dolts, who depend their difficulties and find out only what is missing. Tonight I shall see God tinkering in the joints in the years. Have you any notion what number of years are locked alongside one another in a single of such pine knots?
