Neither, it's a "X". A cross between cavendish and sumantra. I do have a zebrina, but it's not nearly as nice to look at.

Sumantra is the same as zebrinia right? That is a nice looking plant, too bad there is seeds in the fruit.

If you have daytime temperatures peaking above 70F and no temperature drop below 50F, plus humidity above 55% that bud should sail right through.

This creamwah mat of mine is an unstoppable juggernaut! Since my first harvest last December, I've harvested two other bunches this year and now I have three filling and a forth on the way. None of my other varieties perform like this one. Not sure why (I think it's because it's my wife's favorite)

I've let this mat grow with less management than the others. I imagine the bunches could be bigger but we can only eat so many at once anyway, so this is working for us.

Nice - I have an aka blue Java -not a namwah- only about 12 ft high and no flag but has started leaning and it is really a dramatic lean - had to prop it. I noticed your is way over . Is that common with Ice Cream? :drum::drum:

robguz24

Yes, leaning is very common in my experience with Ice Cream. It's one of the reasons I have ripped out most of them. I can have it propped in 3 directions and it magically finds a way to fall the opposite way. Maybe 1/3 of bunches make it to full maturity.

The Blue Java/Ice Cream they have at Quail Gardens in Encinitas are terrible leaners, too. The one in my yard is still too small to lean -- yet!

So is the grocery store for cavendish ;).

For their level of cold tolerance they do seem to be dependable and don't really need propping which is great. But the taste experience isn't that noteworthy. I think the mahoi is fun for the novelty but that has worn off for me. If space wasn't such a premium in my yard. I would probably keep it around because it's fairly attractive and a nice height for architectural effect.

Will the Double grow and produce in a container? I have had several Namva produce in containers, but nothing else yet. I just planted a Namva, I had put in a small container a few years ago. I kind of forgot about it. Didn't water it very much no real fertilizer either. I noticed a small leaf and it looked like it was going to flower, so I stuck it in the ground. It is from a full size Namva but this one is only 5' tall.

Goldfinger that started life at Agri-Starts so may not be the real thing. However, seems to fit much of the description, including the fruit taste and texture. This one is really short, about 6'.

Uhm... interesting. There's a guy here in Italy who has got a Goldfinger, and also that plant has flowered at about 6'. Wondering if they are the same clone. 6', as far as i know, is a little on the small side for a goldfinger. They should go about 8' as first crop, am I right?

Another TC Goldfinger from the same order fruited at 7.5'. Most types I grow tend to fruit a bit shorter than typical. I have had DBs fruit at 4' and others at 11 all from the same source. Huge differences just in my own yard based on water and sunlight. So I don't know that any 2 are about 6' matters much.

Yes, the rachis is normally mostly clean in tall Namwah, but sometimes the floral relicts hang on for a while. Give it some time and see what it looks like. Also, "medium Namwah" ("Misi Luki") retains floral relicts beneath the female fingers and down for a foot or two before the rachis becomes clean. And Dwarf Namwah has floral relicts down the whole rachis below the fingers.

This is the banana cultivar being sold in the United States as the Goldfinger and did not want it to be confused with the real FHIA-01 Goldfinger developed in Honduras.

Now you got me confused: so "American Goldfinger" is something different than FHIA 1? Is this something like the "Blue Java phenomenon"?

What is the difference? What are your sources? I have noticed that TARS has had to classify a bunch of their accessions as unknown. The trade here is pretty much supplied completely by Agristarts, so it is likely some mutation during the tissue culture process. I know they have some variants in Australia.

it is likely some mutation during the tissue culture process.

It is more likely the original donor supplied an incorrect plant.

Identification and characterization guide for FHIA banana and plantain hybrids (http://www.musalit.org/seeMore.php?id=11677)

This guide is much easier to use when you have the correct plants.

I've grown both plants from pups and from tissue cultures and the differences are obvious.

I have noticed that TARS has had to classify a bunch of their accessions as unknown.

That's been going on for years and you probably also noticed that many are not really unknown but were just removed for being incorrect, e.g., a donor supplies multiple plants, the GM gets listed as the Cav, the Cav gets listed as the GM, and then they're both removed for being incorrect.

Sure, but I'm not growing anything obtained as Goldfinger/FHIA-01. Given that you are growing many varieties, including the real FHIA-01 and "American Goldfinger", many of us are wondering what YOU think "American Goldfinger" is.

No, it was just a way of saying every banana shouldn't be called a Goldfinger.

It is more likely the original donor supplied an incorrect plant.

I don't know what happened because what I have came from Agristarts 5-6 years ago and matches the descriptors. The plant is about 12' tall has a hanging bunch and the bracts lift one at a time.

Lau

Here are some descriptors, 6.4.5 - 6.4.13 - 6.4.15

Honduras, FHIA-01 (http://www.crop-diversity.org/mgis/content/02hnd00434-fhia-01-0)

India, FHIA-01 (http://www.crop-diversity.org/mgis/content/01ind349626-fhia-01-0)

Australia, Goldfinger (http://www.crop-diversity.org/mgis/content/01aus0434-goldfinger-0)

Thanks for the FHIA info. I have been looking at the descriptors and my plant seems to be too tall to be a true Goldfinger plant. Other things in the descriptors don't match. The hairless Peduncle on the Ind FHIA-01 and very hair 2mm of the Aus FHIA-01. Maybe it is a different FHIA plant. Maybe FHIA-18. I will have to look up that plant.

It's fairly common, most people just want to believe the name it came with is the correct name and they look for the descriptors that match. Don't waste your time searching for the descriptors that are a common match for many or most cultivars (6.3.12 - leaf color – GREEN), instead look for descriptors that set it apart (6.4.15 - male bud shape). The real FHIA-01 is very easy to identify by the male bud and for what it's worth the plants I've grown have all been about 8' to 9' tall.

Thanks. I do love a good mystery. :goteam: I took a look at the AAA classification Accession name "Williams" and the Peduncle was a match Very hairy, short hairs (similar to velvet touch). Is the Very hairy, short hairs velvet touch something that all AAA Species/Group have?

The male bud shape doesn't look the same as the pictures I took of my plant. I cut the bud off, so I can not do a comparison. The fruit shape is similar. The bunch is still hanging and the mat produces fruit every year. Next time I will take pictures that match the pictures in the Musa Germplasm Information System.

Saba P-Stem is probably 13-15 feet. The lowest hand on the bunch is hanging at about 10-11 feet. Like I said - this is a first time bloom from a tissue culture plant - both of them are not in full sun at all.

I separated a corm heavy pup from the saba and planted it in a full sun location to test the difference.

This one came from Novelty Greens, the main supplier for Hawaii out of Hilo. I have FHIA-2,3, 17,23, and 25. Most are very recent (planted within the past month) except the 2 which came from Agristarts initially. I've had the fruit of these same sourced Goldfingers and they seemed to match other descriptions and I found them exceptional, as I did the 2 I grew. Yangambi is one I've love to get my hands on and is supposedly grown somewhere on my island. The others I doubt are here except Grand Nain which I've grown but took out.

I guess this question is for growers that mimics or comes close to SoCals 10A zone.
Your 10A zone is characterized by cold and sometimes freezing winter temperatures, with warm but low humidity summers. Tropic conditions for bananas have record low temperatures of 55-65F and non-winter humidity over 90%. That humidity acts like a warming oven, whereas our lack of humidity causes warmth to be stripped away by ocean breezes.

This thread is mainly about what banana plants are blooming in your garden. For more information on cultivars for southern CA, please find one of the existing threads or start a new one.

It difficult to answer with any meaning to it. Often new ones I plant are fast because they have full sun, less competition, and nothing has ever grown in that spot. Another spot in the yard may yield wildly different results and certainly elsewhere on the island, to say nothing of outside of Hawaii. That said. I've gotten blooms in 10 months or so on Goldfinger, Agristarts "Goldfinger", Mona Lisa, 1000 fingers from TC. My 1000 fingers pup from a different source took 4 years! So anything I could tell you isn't so useful. Studies or observations under more controlled and consistent settings, such as what PR-Giants posted, are much more useful.

According to your chart, the parentage
of the FHIA 18 & 01 are the same...
Prata Ana x SH 3142?

The FHIA 17 & 23 you have both
listed as Highgate x SH3362.

I wonder if its the same with hibridizing in palm culture
where the mother would be the first listed
whereas the pollen donor father
would be on the other side of the x.

Pls clarify.

If you add the the two numbers (from the table)

the SH 3640 is 4th in terms of speed of growth/maturity.

@GB
This was a study on synthetic hybrid bananas with a few local cultivars as a reference. I only included a few from the study.

If you're looking to grow FHIA, go with the SH-3640 it tastes best and grows fast. The FHIA-03 grows fast and is probably the best for colder climates.
Be careful of info from members with misidentified bananas.
I harvested 3 FHIA-02 bunches today and all went into the compost, the bunches that went into the house today were Veinte Cohol, Verdin, Morado, Dwarf Brazilian, Manzano, & SH-3640.

Tc's are fine and if done correctly can
really help commercial farmers. In the
US they are done as ornamental plants
so the screening procedures are skipped
and you guys get a higher percentage of

It looks like you think it might be Orinoco, from the photo name. I think that's a good guess. The fruit are so distinctive that you'll know soon.

We got this mystery pup from a friend at work, wife had some at work and of course took no pictures LOL She described it as smaller and fatter than a cavendish. So thinking some sort of manzano banana? Flowers at ends of bananas are clear/white. hands of 16, in rows of 8 (not sure if that is same for all bananas, new at this) Very excited we got it to come this far, hope it has a good fruit set.

It is my current favorite due to superior disease resistance, height is decent for cutting off individual hands, flavor is very good whether eaten when freshly turned yellow or slightly over ripe. The leaves of ours are also fairly wind tolerant - though the leaves of PRGiants sweetheart look pretty tattered. It was planted at the same time as a Goldfinger and Kandarian in the same mat and has grown at double the rate. It is a nice/ stout looking plant. I do prop when fruiting due to the heavy bunch weight. Seems the most tolerant of water and fertilization fluctuations as well.

Local TC from Novelty Greens of "Goldfinger" which it clearly is not. However, matches Goldfinger in some respects including the fruit taste and ease at which fingers come off before totally ripe as on Dwarf Brazilian. Messy Rachis here looks pretty much like a DB.

Hey PR,

Hope you are well. I am a special kind of person as you say. I believe the variety that you and I have debated the most about was the 3640. However, I haven't cut off the male bud this time on my "fools goldfinger". There is no way it's a goldfinger. I'll have to post a current picture when I get the chance. So I admit that I was mistaken. I should have grown out the male bud on previous bunches before so as to avoid misidentifying. Not sure what it is exactly but I love the fruit off of it. It's my favorite of all I have tried.

Excited to see this one flower. Got it a year ago. According to Kepler & Rust, there are only 12 in the world, or I guess 13 with mine. This is one of the ones I helped get into Ms. Kepler's TC preservation project along with Gabe and Keikikid.

Maoli Hai. Supposed to be the biggest bunches of the Maolis.

You might notice our pitiful agristarts goldfinger in the back right toppled over (with messy rachis). My husband spoke with Going Bananas about the agristarts goldfinger and they think the issue isn't with the original tissue they received, but something that happened with the culture process. My husband said the FHIA1 they have growing in the field look/taste as described.

Thanks, so it isn't a very tall one and it looks like the bunch is easy to get to. My Agristarts FHIA-01s generally collapse on themselves too. From what I understand the Going Bananas Goldfinger isn't the real thing, so whatever happened in the tissue culture process probably doesn't matter too much.

"Distinctive cooking banana having in common a French-bunch type
and a tall pseudostem

The most relevant feature of this subdivision of the cooking banana
subgroup is that during their natural hybridization process the A genome
was transferred from the Papuan M. acuminata spp. banksii
rather than from the Asian M. acuminata (Lebot et al., 1993). Clones
under this subdivision produce fruits with organoleptic qualities similar
to those of the genuine cooking bananas. There are two Lacknau
clones in the collection, PI 23472 and PI 23479, that were originally
classified in the AAB or true plantain group (Valmayor et al., 1981), but
were later reclassified as distinctive cooking bananas (Lebot et al.,
1993; 1994). These were introduced from SIATSA, Honduras. Their
pseudostem is green. The comparison between clones demonstrated
that introduction PI 23472 developed a significantly thicker pseudostem,
required substantially more days for fruit filling, and produced
significantly heavier fruits (Table 2). There was no significant difference
between the two clones for the other plant, bunch and individual
fruit traits studied. The information obtained was not enough to maintain
a separate clonal identity. However, PI 23472 and other Lacknau
clones have been reported to possess field resistance to the corm weevil
(Cosmopolites sordidus Germar) (Irizarry et al., 1988). Clone PI 23479
has not been evaluated for this attribute. Until this evaluation is performed,
these clones should be maintained as separate entities."

Ours came from GRIN (from the field) in Miami. We also received Poni from GRIN - but the TARS sight shows Poni as something different (not a purple variant of Ele Ele, as I had thought Poni was described other places).

Miami received their Dare Laknua from the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain on 15-Dec-1993.

TARS received their Dare Laknua from Miami on 25-Oct-2006.

After examining the 3 Laknua accessions, TARS concluded they were all the same plant and now only offers 1 accession.

...however their photos of Poni do not look anything like bananas in the Maoli group.

Probably because TARS lists their Poni in the Pome group (Brazilian, Raja Puri) and not as a purple variant of Ele Ele in the Maoli group.

Just look at your plants and try to get them in the correct groups first.

After you figure out what banana you're growing, be sure to let the curator at GRIN know what bananas they have growing in the three plots that they labeled as “Dare”.

Blue Java (from Rmplmnz - thank you!).

These have been so interesting to watch develop. They started out bright green under the bracts and have turned more blue each day as they have developed.

We planted this pup in our sugar sand soil and have been adding used mulch from the area where our chickens are put up each night, along with a small amount of oak ash.

Unnamed Iholena that also exists on Oahu, possibly elsewhere. Found in a state park in Waimea, Big Island. We call it "Nani" which means beautiful. Beautiful pattern on the underside of new leaves, possibly had cucumber mosaic virus. Long peduncled Iholena variant. Plant looks similar, yet distinct from Kapua. Only 8 months to flower.

This is one of the reasons why Williams is so widely planted. I started it as a tissue culture plantlet last December and now it has flowered. Little else has been that quick.

If you're growing in the subtropics, this should be in your collection. Plant to harvest in less than a year with huge bunches of great fruit, certainly one of my favorites. Expecting this bloom to be in the 80 lb. range.

With so many great members growing this cultivar there should be enough pups for everyone this year.

A special thanks to the University of Florida for the work they did with this Majestic Musa.

Another Maoli type. This one came from Kahanu Garden in Hana, Maui and was labeled Maoli Lele Kea. I'm guessing it's a Dwarf Kaualau because it's fruiting at 8.5 feet and is growing like dwarf types do. 15 months to flower.

Gabe, wondering if you concur?
