This is the 2nd generation fruit on my 1000 fingers. There is already more than twice as much fruit as the first generation. Gave this one much more sulfate of potash after the first measly bunch.
That's a gold dust day gecko on the 2nd picture. There must be literally thousands of them in my yard. They love banana flowers.

Here's a DC blooming at just 3.5' of pstem. It doesn't have many leaves because they kept getting fried from too much light/heat and not enough water (I only recently added the watering reservoir seen in the pic).

Hard to tell from this photo and the others you posted. A closer photo of the bunch would help. Doesn't look like Namwah to me, from what I can see. Looks like the bunch is not hanging vertically, which the bunches on all "Namwah" (Pisang Awak) varieties I've come across do. Also doesn't look like Orinoco to me.

Thank you very much Mark! :) This bunch grew laying on top of the building's roof and its rachis is still growing and laying on the roof,so that probably distorts its handing angle/position. I didn't free it as the metal sheeting of the roof of this storage building is thin at the edge and would have most probably damaged the bunch and peduncle big time! The bunch sits about3,5-4m up and the area is dark so a better photo is difficult but I will try!

The variety, whatever it is, has not been near as robust as some of the others that I have. As the mother stem matured, the whole plant seemed to really slow down. Unless the flavor blows my mind, I could see a case for replacing it just for productivity sake. Thanks.

First time plantings sometimes produce low yield. And choking too as it appears in the pic. My Datil had it bad and had to cut away leaves and split the top of the pstem to expose the short peduncle with the top hand. Fingers were small too.
The next pstem was perfectly normal and had a big yield and much larger fingers. Will post a pic of the new Datil flower tomorrow.
Pisang Raja fruit is fantastic. Nick brought me some and I made another trip to his place to get a PR pup.

Could be. Don't cut off the male bud. If the male flowers and bracts do not fall off the rachis, then it probably really is Pisang Raja.

For what its worth, the pisang raja looks similar to mine. The yield isn't fantastic. I've harvested a few bunches around the glades and usually you don't get more than 30 lbs of fruit. It's certainly no FHIA-17 in terms of yield.

They really do look the same to me. The very big bloom (relative to the plant size) and the very colorful female flowers are traits of Rajapuri. The height it's fruiting for you is also very typical of that cultivar. Are you growing this in exactly the same spot you grew your known RP? If not, I'd be inclined to attribute the difference in height to a microclimate in your yard, or something like that. If you grow them side by side and they are different, then they are different! But it's not uncommon to have sports of the same cultivar that differ a bit in height. Aside from height, are there any noticeable differences that can't be attributed to microclimate or some small difference between what the mats get (e.g., water)?

This mat is 20 ft from the original RP location. I can't compare them except by photo comparison. The orig RP mat was removed and replaced by Chini Champa. I feel better now about the ID. The next time I email Brian Irish at USDA ars grin in PR I'll say thanks for the RP.

My wife has just made reservations at the classiest restaurant we have ever eaten in,
but because it is in Vietnam, it is very affordable, price wise comparable to a lower
mid-range place here in North America.
They sent us an a la carte menu with the confirmation. I got a giggle our of the first
appetizer listed:
“Chicken salad with banana blossom, steamed rice cake with dried shrimp and
roasted pork.” (that one is about $5.-)
The main courses range from $7.- to $ 21.-, the last price buys you:
Herb crusted rack of lamb
Australian rack of lamb served with mashed potato, ratatouille and red wine sauce
To get an idea of how snazzi the place is look here:
Our finest dining in Vietnam - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lungwitz/sets/72157632260074417/)
This will be our third visit there. I am already licking my chops :) :) :)

Even for me, coming from Canada, the air fare would be cheaper to Charlotte,
but if I want to stick around for a while, the savings in Vietnam catch up rapidly.

I spent 9 months in south VietNam in 1970 and never ate VN food. Just army food. Had to wait till 1992 to find out how good it was on moving to NC. At least I got to use the Vietnamese I still remembered to place an order. lol

Good for you!
English is my second language. I spoke another one (beside my native) well enough to
discuss any subject, but that was ˝ century ago and I have not been back since. I also
can get simple ideas across in three or 4 others, but I have never even tried any of the
South East Asian languages, because the are tonal, rather than literal and I would be too
afraid to put my foot, where it does not belong. :ha:
Come think of it, we do have a Vietnamese restaurant less than 20 km (12 miles) from our
house, which was recommended to us by a Vietnamese couple, but it was disappointing.
They slapped the food on the plate, like everybody else does here, outside of expensive
eateries. Nothing of that artistic presentation, which you get in Vietnam even with 3
and 4 dollar dishes.

Everything looks real good otherwise.
All the Ice Creams lean, but this particular one blew over almost totally in a storm and is now propped up in 3 directions. I lose more than half my Ice Cream bunches due to this leaning. Sucrier is another big leaner, but not quite as bad. Namwah, Dwarf Namwah, and 1000 fingers lean some, but I've not had them topple over. My last 65lb Namwah bunch never even had to be propped up.
It's bits of soil amongst chunks of lava rock with mulch on top! But pups just push the rock out of the way. It's kind of amazing. But what also tends to happen is mats rise, because they can't push the rock down. With Ice Creams, I've even totally replanted them deeper, and they still always need to be propped.
Here is what my lot was like when I started, and what it is like below anything I plant. The 2nd picture is the hole left once I removed another Ice Cream that fell over.

I can't get a decent photo on the Double Mahoi, but here is my SH 3640.....

The odd thing to me is that it is blooming at +/- 6.5' and was a little fat pup about 6 months ago. I wish I had a picture, but it wasn't more than a foot tall. I shouldn't have a case of mistaken variety because I got this one from a very respected source.

Ed, is that a normal height for this one in your yard? If so, that's awesome. I'd like a Manzano that typically fruits at less than 10'. Mine are typically 12-13' so far.

Yes, 8' p-stem is average I've had them fruit at 7'and sometimes 9', maybe it's my microclimate and it would grow taller with different soil conditions.
There's a lot of history with this plant, my father and I bought it in Miami. That day we went to different nurseries looking for small avocado trees unfortunately we didn't find any. In one of the nurseries they were selling banana plants, they had only one variety Manzano the nursery attendant said that he grows this plant and he described the fruit as a sweet banana mixed with apple, that was 36 years ago I was 14 years old.

I could be wrong because I am not an expert on climate, but I'm pretty sure than sea surface temperature anomalies are not the same as El Nino, which involves more than just SST. In other words, there are warm SST anomalies when there is an El Nino, but having warm SST anomalies does not mean there is an El Nino occurring.
Whatever the case, it would be great if we got some rain!

The feeding program seems fine. However, the corm or localized network of corms has fixed resources. If you're feeding three the diet of one, then on average 1/3 bunches would be expected.
Maybe the - University of Hawaii at Manoa - feeding program will work in Hawaii.
http://www.bananas.org/f2/new-banana-zone-14781.html
That's what some students decided to do in their garden. For the actual feeding program recommended by the tenured professors for cultivation in Hawaii, see the link to the CD posted elsewhere at bananas.org.

It's all very unscientific what I do, but I tend to use more on bigger mats. But 3X more, I'm not sure. It may be a water issue, as it's in the rain shadow of my house and up against the edge of my planting areas. A mat of DBs which has roots under my regularly watered lawn gives me the biggest bunches of anything I grow and gets no more fertilizer than these A'ea'es even though it usually has 5+ p-stems.
I appreciate the suggestions!

Don't confuse the feeding recommendations for a large plantation with that of a garden or small farm.
No one is going to recommend a few million wheel barrels of compost, it's just not practical.
Try reading some scientific literature on small farms in India, Africa, & the Caribbean,
see the links posted elsewhere at bananas.org. :lurk:
Most studies report around a 25% loss in bunch size when using chemical fertilizer instead of compost.
Why would someone actually want to pay money to get less fruit?
Between the 3 simplest ways to feed a Banana plant,
Chemical Fertilizer is the Least Effective, but it's better than doing nothing.
# 1 - Composted Plant Material
# 2 - Composted Manure
# 3 - Chemical Fertilizer

The difference is the improvement in soil quality versus nutrition. But, I imagine there are limits. I don't imagine that adding compost to my already humus rich soils is going to be any more beneficial than adding fertilizer. However, I always recommend to people that buy my suckers that they heavily amend their sandy planting holes.

FHIA-18 (supposed to be anyway). 9 months from planting keiki taken from the mother plant planted 27 months ago in a shady spot and still hasn't flowered. Was very surprised to see this flowering already. Only about 7', but virtually everything I grow tends to be shorter than stated elsewhere, particularly with first blooms. Already going to have at least 5 hands.
Anyone growing FHIA-18 please weigh in. The inflorescence is a bit unique in that it was long and skinny, with each bract rolling back tightly. Female flowers totally yellow/white. P-stem is quite colorful and skinny. The reddish seems to be correct for FHIA-18, but is true for many cultivars. Kind of reminds me of pictures I've seen of Rose.

Rob, doesn't look right to me for FHIA-18. The leaves should be drooping, not as erect as those on your plant (at least they appear that way in your photos). The p-stem and petioles seem too colorful, too. Lots of red and not enough dark blotches at the petiole bases. Could be the climate or something else, but if I had to bet, I'd bet no.

Thanks Mark, the one thing that until now made me think it was correctly FHIA-18 was the bioversity international guide to FHIA bananas http://growables.org/information/TropicalFruit/documents/guidetoFHIAhybrids.pdf where it says on p.6 that the p-stem is "reddish, no blotches or very few blotches" for both FHIA-02 & 18. The picture of FHIA-02 looks a lot like mine, but mine are much shorter. There isn't actually a picture of 18 in the whole guide and I haven't been able to find good pics anywhere for comparison. At least I'll have a good idea of the fruit size and shape in a few months, and the male bud sooner.

Yes, FHIA-1 and FHIA-18 are siblings, so not too different. Both are tetraploid (AAAB), and in general, the more chromosome sets the droopier the leaves.

This one was sold to me as a Raja Puri, but it lacks red lining on the edge of its petioles, so it isn't that cultivar. Probably another Dwarf Orinoco. It doesn't have any leaves, but it's attached to an established mat for support, so I think it'll be fine. I'm hoping that the other two big pstems on the mat will quickly push out 8 or so leaves apiece and flower in early spring. It'd be pretty cool to have multiple bunches hanging from the same mat :)<br />
Here's a pic of the emerging bunch:

Dan, it is the plant I got from you. The pseudostem is about 4' It stayed very green over the winter and retained most of its leaves. If the fruit is good I have found a winner. This would be perfect for greenhouse plantings. It is susceptible to sigatoka.

Good Luck Rob, Hope you get a great bunch.
Thanks for the weevil info, I'm lucky that the Morado is resistant to weevils and so far the Verdin appears to be also. I actually planted the Verdin in a weevil infested ARH corm, it was easier than adding compost.
Thanks Keith, I wish I knew more about the reds or what specific variant this is. Everyone here just calls them Tall Red or Cuban Red if they aren't clearly Dwarf Reds. Where I live is pretty dry (for this area, only 75" of rain last year) and ones I've seen just a few miles away where they get almost double that they seem to be much more vigorous, taller, thicker stemmed even with no care. The bunch is puny. Only 4 hands and now putting out male flowers.
My Dwarf Red has been much faster growing with many pups, but still no flower after 2.5 years. Thought it started to choke 6 months ago after a very dry summer but it still putting out new growth extremely slowly while the pups are close to overtaking the original p-stem in height.

Rob, here you go. This is what I have as FHIA-18. I have no reason to doubt this ID (though I'd be hard pressed to distinguish it from FHIA-01). The bud is long at emergence (first bract was 27") and narrow, but seriously fattens up. The picture of the first bract that was covering fruit (bract 3) gives you an idea of just how big the inflorescence of this variety is -- massive. The p-stem is very thick at base, too.

Yes, for me the misidentified ones have usually been Namwah or Pome. Just had the first harvest of one that was supposed to be Manzano, but was actually a Pome ("Brazilian" type). I have 4 plants that weren't supposed to Namwah but are, plus a couple Pome varieties that were supposed to be something else (+ 2 that were). End result, I lot less variety than I was aiming for! But at least they are varieties that do well here.

I actually harvested a bunch the other day. Nothing to write home about, it taste like a banana should. The others fruited in Early January and Early February. The January bunch came off too early. Only about 15 lbs of fruit.

So my Ensete glaucum is blooming I noticed yesterday this huge green flower. The herb is less than 2 years old. Some of the first seeds I got from James when I joined in 2012. I never thought about it but I assumed the fruit was not edible. My husband asked if they could be eaten.
So now I turn to YOU the experts:
#1: Are they not edible because they taste bad?
#2: Are the not edible because of the seeds?
#3: Are they not edible because...Why do you think or know?
Thanks and cheers ^_^

I am so jealous of many of the plants I have seen on here. I am in Missouri and have been trying my best just to keep mine alive. I don't have a greenhouse so I have to take them up every fall. This is the best so far this year. Try not to laugh.

There's no secret, just a lot of opinions and even more possibilities. After 3 or 4 cycles of pups, pstems, and fruits we might get to some consensus.

Is a really red midrib a useful trait for identification?
Is it based on genotype, subgroup, and/or cultivar?
Is it influenced by the environment?
Which plants have it and which don't?
Are the plants being used as your guide accurately identified?
A red midrib is not a trait of the Manzanos that I grow.
If you have an interest in red midribs, start a thread asking members to submit photos & data.
Keith I think you got distracted from my actual question. I was never identifying anything based on a red midrib, that was Dan that said his morados looked like the banana in question based on the bud + the red midrib. I was asking which variety(s) have a yellow tip on the petals of the emerging female flower. I kept harassing because I never got an answer to what type of nanner that was. The last pic of Eds manzano was the most vibrant red on a banana I have seen, so I figured it at least warranted a comment.

Remove the large pup, let the small pup continue. If the mother plant doesn't flower in 2 months, also remove the small pup.

The female and male flowers of the DC are much more colorful (red and dark hues) than is normal for that cultivar.
I have no idea what the unknown is. How tall is it and are the petiole canals open, closed, or intermediate? The really compact structure of the bunch is distinctive.
DC and Unknown
The plants are about 10' Tall and close to 3' around at the base of the plant. The last picture is older but it shows the banana plants.
Do you think the DC might be something else?

Not sure about this one. Have you had the fruit before? If so, what do they taste like? Any tartness? Thick peel or thin peel?

The flower colors are more typical of Rajapuri (if this plant is as short as a DC).
The fruit on both plants is very good. I still think the Namva fruit is better. This time when I harvest I will pay attention and take some pictures of the fruit and peel.

I've never grown the real deal, but that sounds about right by other accounts. The debate in the literature is whether it is pleasantly sweet or putrid sweet. I hope you can shed some light on this question! :)

Here's how to turn a banana that normally flowers at about 15' into a "dwarf". Chop it off at 1.5' not long before it is going to flower!
I wasn't aiming for that. I am slowly removing this mat because the plants are too darn tall and lean over my neighbor's driveway. But it is amusing to see how chopping this one worked out.
PS - the bunches on p-stems that aren't chopped are WAY bigger!
