Hello again banana buddies: :waving:

This thread will be a place to talk about and show pics of what you have germinating recently. I sow seeds year round and wanted a place to show my sprouts.

Others may feel free also to post about their germinating seedlings or show shots as well.

Here's my "Fluorescent Purple" hot pepper seedlings that popped a little bit ago...

BTW how do ya all deal with my germination nightmare?
LABELING!!!
;)

The Hollyberry Lady
05-11-2010, 09:51 PM
Labelling is so important and something I'm fanatical about. I just can't stand not knowing what I'm growing if I can help it.

Get yourself some tape Ante - the kind you can write on, and use that if you can't be bothered to buy actual labels. :ha: Then you can just stick the tape on your pots. I like to write the identification and date the seed was sown.

Here's my "Patio" tomato seedlings, even though they've all been transplanted now. This is my most favorite Determinate variety and it'll even produce in a south window in the dead of winter! :02:

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/DSCI2614.jpg

If your unlabled plants are some of mine Ante, feel free to post shots and I could let you know what they are...

Otherwise, get that tape! :goteam:

Have I shown off my Himalayan Blue poppy seedling lately? It sprouted awhile ago but took a long time to get going. Finally has now...

How did you sow yours and how long did they take, if you don't mind?

I don't mind but I don't remember how long it took and I never keep track of when I sow seed. I know I planted two and they both sprouted. I sow every thing the same way. Coco choir and perlite and a pinch of the same to cover.

Here's my green maple sprout from a different batch of Maple seeds. Unlike my other JRM's that took six months of cold stratification to pop, these maples were already sprouted in the plastic bag while travelling in the mail from the US!

hey Hollyberry Lady, do you have any updated pictures of your Goji Berries? (i think it was you...lol)

The Hollyberry Lady
06-09-2010, 01:26 AM
Everything's looking good, you guys. Thanks for sharing.

Those Goji berry seedlings you saw me post earlier Amber, no longer exist! The truth is I was really just testing them for viability for a friend but I had no intention on keeping them.

I saw your pic of your seedlings though and that's exactly how they should look, so don't worry. They don't grow super fast right away. Do you fertilize your seedlings? If you do, they'll develop more quickly for you.

If you want a dense, bushy shrub instead of a tall spindly one, be sure to prune the tops off any new shoots as they develop and grow 4-6 inches long, and the shrub will totally branch out for you.

They like to be pruned often when they really get growing and in the long run you'll have way more berries as a result. Don't prune while they are too young. Be sure there's enough growth first.

You do know that when Goji is grown from seed though, they won't produce fruit until the third or fourth year? The best yield however, comes after the 4th and 5th year.

: )

AmberNichole
06-09-2010, 05:15 AM
Thanks, they seem so delicate and even the rain drops will kill the plant. I started getting them acclimated to the sun and they were doing fine, so i took them out for a bit longer and 3 wilted and died. I think it is too hot here right now and they should be in partial shade.

The Hollyberry Lady
06-09-2010, 08:34 AM
Goji Berry shrubs usually do fine with the sun & heat - love it, in fact. Here's some things to check for Amber...

If your little Goji seedlings are in small black or dark green pots, the roots could be cooking, and this would be the cause of wilt followed by death. Shield the pots from heat or repot into white containers.

Also...

Goji berry plants are extra appealing to insects, and spider mites will take them down in the blink of an eye. Be sure to check the undersides of your Goij leaves for evidence of mites. They can go undetected if you're not expecting them or looking for them, and before you know it your plant is dead.

: (

Apart from that, keeping them in the shade for awhile is a good idea. Any plant that's in distress will not like the sun and should be protected for now until you figure out what's going on. Don't fertilize while the plants are distressed either.

Be sure too that your shrubs are in a good light and well-draining soil, so the roots are not struggling in a heavy medium.

Good luck with them, Amber. Hope they do better for you soon.

well the heat index says it was 109F/43c yesterday, so i'm not sure if they like it quite that hot lol They are in peat pots, but the peat pots are sitting in a black tray. I don't see any bugs, but i did find a caterpillar that was was eating my poha/cape gooseberry seedings lol I'll keep and eye on them, they are super easy to sprout, so if all else fails i will start over!

OH YEAH I have 3 desert roses popping up! 2 pinks and one violet. I mixed in a bunch of vermiculite with my seed starting mix and they popped up only 3 days later. None of the 12 i planted a month ago came up in the normal seed starter mix.

Wow - didn't realize you guys were that hot, Amber.

: o

That's smoking! No wonder they are in distress.

Something I noticed...

On the Goji seedling that's not doing well, I see a little ball of fertilizer touching the stem. Combined with heat, it could have irritated the little seedling. I use fertilizer enriched soils too that have slow-release capsules but some seedlings are delicate so make sure none of the capsules are actually touching them. Just a thought, because I've had it happen where seedlings have died from this.

I think your idea of shade with those kind of temperatures is your best solution at this point. Seedlings could easily be killed off with that kind of intense and extreme heat.

I use Sunshine soil-less mix # 4 and it's loaded with perlite, yet my desert rose seeds didn't pop yet. I only had two seeds but I was hoping for at least one. Haven't given up yet though...

My Pacific Blue Primrose seeds have come up!

By the way, Amber...

Put broken pieces of eggshells around the base of your Poha seedling. Be sure to make a complete circle. This will deter the caterpillars, as they don't like to crawl over the sharp shells. Plus it adds slow-release calcium over time.

Good luck.

thanks for the info, i will make sure none of the fertilizer is touching the stem. It says its guaranteed not to burn plants, but i didn't even think seedlings could be more affected. The Poha and Lipstick trees LOVE the heat and sun lol But yeah i think it's too much for the little Goji Berries lol
With the Desert Roses I had gotten 20 Pink seeds and only 5 Violet seeds, so i'm really happy i got at least one violet sprouted. Hopefully a few more will come up!

Gratz on the Blue Primrose! Post pictures!

Take care!

This is some kind of pink flowering New Guinea Impatiens cutting that sprouted roots in a glass of water. I just potted it up last night. The thing will have super huge flowers and it's some kind of hybrid I guess. My girlfriend gave me a snipet from her nursery plant and I got it to easily sprout roots in a little over a week. Loving the variegated leaves...

Agree with Jack, Ante. So happy to see the seeds I sent ya worked out. :ha:

The purple fruited type is "Masquerade" and you will be amazed at the rainbow of colors during the ripening process.

I believe the yellow fruit variety are "Fire Cracker", but if they stay short and stout, they are "Explosive Blast". Think I recall you saying you goofed up on the labelling so hope this helps.

They look great. Nice job.

They are full of seeds so I took a dozen or so and lightly rinsed them off, stuck them in a damp paper towel and a baggy. Just held them up to the light a while ago and Viola! I have some growth. From seed it is no longer Passiflora Frederick, but simply Passiflora edulis. The fruit and the cold hardiness will be different. If you want Frederick, you will have to propagate it by cutting from a real Frederick plant.

I think I explained this to everyone I have given seed to. I wasn't sure it was true to type from seed.I found the answer yesterday when I visited someone who has been growing Passiflora for many years. Frederick's is a hybrid so it isn't true too type from seed. My plant from seed has flowered and fruited but so far all fruit are hollow. So if you get one to flower try and cross pollinate and mabe you will come up with your own hybrid.

yeah thats pretty cheap. Here everywhere i have looked they seem to be pretty expensive. There are still little nubs of the stems left (and i think with most of the the roots weren't disturbed), i am hoping maybe they aren't totally dead and might be able to regrow, but i don't know how miracle fruit takes that kind damage. Some of the seedlings were pulled totally out of the dirt and the tops eaten, so i carefully replanted the seed and roots. Do you think there is any hope they can regrow?

Amber, I share your pain.

I tried to rescue my Morning Glories that I managed to grow from seeds. Only half of them, the ones I'm now growing on my deck, got saved. I never knew I had rabbit problem until this year when I saw it go after my Morning Glories. It also destroyed nearly all my watermelon plants, something new that I tried growing from seeds.

Hopefully you will get a beautiful miracle plant next year from the last seedling.

I had a papaya sprouting indoors late last winter, but it burned in the sun when I took it out and It died so.... a week ago I threw some seeds in a few pots (still outside for another month or 2) and quite a few are already sprouting! I hope it stays warm enough to get some good growth from them!

Here's the moso bicolor after being transplanted into a pot for over-wintering in the greenhouse. It has very little foliage on the original culm, but this new shoot looks promising.

I just threw some papaya seeds in a pot and they took off! I cant wait to see them this time next year! Right now they are about 3 weeks old and 3 inches tall. Not bad growth considering the cooler weather! It was suppose to get to the low 40s tonight, so I took it in to keep it a little warmer!

Tony,

Thank you for your reply. Since I have never used perlite or vermiculite before, I always got those two mixed up.

For those who are as confused as I am about perlite and vermiculite, I'd like to share with you the link of a new web site I find:
EnjoyGardening » Perlite vs. Vermiculite (http://www.enjoygardening.com/?p=120) This web site explains perlite and vermiculite in a way I can easily understand and remember...

Most folks in the org are highly accomplished gardeners; I hope you don't mind my asking such rudimentary questions at times.
