Thanks Cam! ;)

I'm going to sow some more marigold seeds today too because I accidently killed my other little sprouts by leaving a window open all night. :(

I'll send ya some seeds later because I remember you said that marigolds are one of your favorites, Cam. Mine too. I have seeds for a dwarf type that only gets 6" tall and is an assortment of reds, mahoganies, & gold colors. I think you'd like them and they grow terrific indoors, even over the winter. :D

Time for planting here now as it is cool and damp - the 20 geranium seeds I planted on Sunday are nearly all up, and the tomatoes are several inches high - nice compact plants too. Waiting for periwinkles and busy lizzies to show themselves now, and have squash seed ready to sow. Geraniums are unobtainable here because of the humidity I think, so I can't wait to see if these survive to flowering size.

I love Geraniums Carol, and I've been growing them from seed for years. They even grow and bloom indoors here over the winter! I wish you luck with yours. ;)

...but I think it is interesting nontheless

Changing of the guard (-flowers)
The roses may look a bit bedraggled, but they are the last of 2010 and have been outside in -4^ C (25^F) before I brought them in here on Nov. 18.

Also on Nov. 18, in order to prepare for a table display of greens for a pre-Christmas get together, I clipped a small twig off my Winter Jasmine, to gauge the timing for the opening of the blossoms, and I had the first fully opened blossom on Nov. 21, just 3 days later, representing the first life blooms of 2011 here in Hardiness Zone 6. The photo was taken to day, Nov. 24.

Winter Jasmine is supposed to flower in late winter, usually late January through March, but can be forced to early bloom indoors. I have always used these pretty little life plants together with evergreens and Wandering Jews in X-mas displays, but this is the earliest I have ever tried it.
Best,
Olaf

My Texas Mountain Laurel seedling this morning. It is growing pretty fast though not like I expected it to. I thought it would shed the seed coat and the leaves would come out from there, but instead it came out from the side.

As it is currently cool (78f) and damp I have squash, zuccini, basil, coriander, spring onions and lettuce sown in the garden - some sprouts showing but not sure if they are weeds yet. The tomatoes are about 2ft tall but looking a bit leggy with no flowers yet - here's hoping!

I need some help and wondering if anyone has an answer. I have a Clivia that produced 1 seed pod and question is how do you tell when its ready to plant? It is green now and about the size of a dime and still attached to the plant flower stalk. Since this is an indoor plant I was surprised this happened but the breeze must have been right one day and it got pollinated. Thanks for any help here.:2722:

Great job, Cameron.

This is the first time I see someone grow kiwi. You told me kiwi's are very attractive vines. So I imagine once you get them going, they are not too hard to take care of except that they don't like the summer heat.

Good luck with your kiwi seedlings!

http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss149/bob_075/DSCN0799.jpg

I'm hoping to grow it for about 4-5 years in a pot and then test it as a hardiness experiment protected and in a warm microclimate next to the house. Dont know but , I always buy something completely ridiculous for my zone or conditions during the winter and this year it was this seedling!:ha:

Please tell us about your macadamia nut seedling (how cool!)....have you known others that have done this experiment and succeeded? What makes you think it could work? Where does this tree originate?

Bob
01-11-2011, 04:20 PM
Yeah its tucked in between the beautyberry's,and a bromeliad that was flowering that i rescued from a dumpster and produced the twin "pups" after the parent plant died next to it .

I got the seedling from someone in Georgia if thats what you mean. Otherwise all the macadamias I've ever heard of were from Hawaii.

I dont know anyone up here whose ever done this but was inspired when I saw a Jeff Earl ( of Ca. Gold fame) tv news program and he was growing one in zone 8 I believe it is in Modesto California so.......I got the bright ( typical mid winter:ha:) idea that if I grew one fairly large and was able to plant it in a suitable microclimate next to the house foundation...... prune it in to a small bush and protect it much like I would a fig or hardy palm then just maybe.......:2200:

:woohoonaner:My O.V.O.B. has sprouted!!! It stands for "Our Very Own Basil". I mentioned in my "call me cheap" thread that I brought home some basil from work. It was mature basil (as it was harvested for sale). So, when I got it home and rooted it, it was already budding. Well...the flowers bloomed and seeded. I planted the seeds and they sprouted!!!! I'm so excited!!! I'll post a pic tomorrow. Talk about getting something for nothing :08: :woohoonaner:

I'm too excited because this morning I noticed a very cool mystery sprout in a pot in my cool bathroom window sill! :goteam:

The pot has a Holly cutting in it that's now rooted. Whatever this seed is, it took a year to germinate and it even pushed through the little purple stones...

Sherry what do you have in with the purple stones? Is it just water with rooting hormones, or any soil or peat under them or.......inquiring minds want to know? :ha:

I asked at Lowe's if they had any of those hydroponic clay balls which they didn't, but they told me I could just root things in water with some florist marbles and I was wondering if that was basically what you had done there.

I opened up a baggy that I had forgotten about and had sprouts in it. I had three different kinds of seeds in it and two of the three have popped. One set is a golden bell pepper, the other were passi seeds of which none popped, and I have to check the original bag for the other. They were all in the same coffee filter but very distinctive looking, so I didn't have to worry about mixing them up.

Very cool JaNan...always fun finding forgotten sprouts!

Here's my little araesima triphyllum seedling this morning!!! It looked as though it had spider mite damage and I panicked while checking it over thoroughly. Not even one was present though so I can't explain the reason for the white specks on the leaves.

What's even more cool is that a 2nd sprout is coming up and you can see it to the right in the photo...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC02606.jpg

I must have given up on the seeds or forgot about these ones when I planted the holly cutting. Here's the sprout from the back...

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo193/hollyberrylady08/2nd%20album/DSC02607.jpg

I often do that, if seeds don't come up for me...I just sow other seeds over top of them in hopes that someday one will sprout unexpectedly. This is a classic example. I am so thrilled that a 2nd seedling is now emerging! How cool is that?! :goteam:

A better shot so you can see my 2nd Araesima Triphyllum (Jack-in-the-Pulpit) seedling emerging. It takes a year in cold soil for these little guys to germinate so I'm very happy to see them!

(WATER)MELONS:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=40871&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=40871&ppuser=5708)

three different kinds:
- one white skinned melon with sweet orange flesh (I bought it as "Jade Beauty", but names ....)
- watermelon with regular green skin, but yellow flesh
- seedless watermelon with dark green skin

I had no problems at all to germinate these seeds. Especially the seedless varieties (pot on the right) came very fast (two days), but I gave these some extra heat.
The other two took a few days longer and spent all the time in the greenhouse with heating mat turned on at night. They were all sowed one week ago.
I bought them from ebay seller planet_lotus in Australia and this transaction was very smooth.
They will be put in seperate pots soon and then go in ground in about a month. I should have ripe melons by the end of June/beginning of July!!!

I won't have any seeds until late summer, but I can save some for you

I basically let the seedlings grow, then move them to different areas once larger
It does take a few years for them to grow & flower from seed
I have a stream on the side of the property, so they are perfect to help hold the soil in

Quisqualis indica also known as the Chinese honeysuckle or Rangoon Creeper

Quisqualis is an important pharmaceutic plant. The taxonomic classification of Quisqualis indica (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?30779) is incorrect, genetically it is Combretum indicum (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?412158).

This picture, which I posted once before shows last year’s castor bean plant to the left of the banana.

It is a very attractive plant, but poisonous. I do not know how it compares with oleander, Rhododendron
or other poisonous garden plants, but the fact, that the seed pods are so attractive makes the especially
dangerous to inquisitive children. So be warned.

I collected seeds, - plenty of them. I first soaked them for about 24 to 30 hours in plain warmish tab water
in a 26^C environment.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41093&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41093&ppuser=7269)

This photo shows in the upper row three seeds prior to soaking and the lower row 3 after soaking.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41095&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41095&ppuser=7269)

Then I placed them on top of some moist soil in an empty strawberry container, which allows with
the lid closed some ventilation, while keeping most of the moisture in.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41096&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41096&ppuser=7269)

After two or three days they looked like this, all shriveled back to the state before soaking.

Since I only wanted 2 or 3 plants, I had the luxury to split my seeds into 3 parts: 1/3rd I tossed back into the
water and left them there, 1/3rd I left on top of the soil and the last 1/3rd I buried lightly.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41092&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41092&ppuser=7269)

As you can see in this picture, there was no contest. The seeds in the soil won hands down.

I still have seeds left. I’ll be pleased to stick them into an envelope and send then to anybody, who wants some.
Just PM me your mailing address.

Best,
Olaf

I don't know, Sherry, we have to look and see. So far mine haven't been exposed to too much light yet and
probably won't be for another two or three days. Therefore they will probably remain pale yellow for the
better part of a week yet, before we will know.

But if you want some insurance in the meantime, I can certainly send you some seeds.

I bought the one last year in May from a local amateur, when it was about 1 foot high. It grew to about 6', but
developed seeds much sooner, as
you can see in the picture. If you want to get it to that height before frost, you should get started soon.

Best,
Olaf

So your seeds definitely were collected from that purple beauty in the picture? It's just stunning.

The person who sent my seeds didn't tell me they were poisonous, or even what they were! I had to post a shot of them on banana org and someone told me. Then I finally did contact the person and they told me they were purple castor bean.

I just can't get over how dark maroon yours is though. :08:

This one followed this morning less than 24 hrs later, and already I am worried about their
“Lebensraum”

Unfortunately I have only room for 15 plants, as measured by the space my trays need. 14 were already
spoken for by other plants. In order to accommodate 4 Castor Beans, I had to improvise:

In order to give them max. soil with min. space I opted to cut the bottom out of 4 small square pots and
stapled them together

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41190&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41190&ppuser=7269)

Then I filled a large square pot half full of soil so that the small pots will reach the top of it. Thus four
plants can now share a large pot without the roots getting too tangled :)

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41194&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41194&ppuser=7269)

Pots - not yet soaked down with warm water - without the plants…

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41195&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41195&ppuser=7269)

…and as of this morning – with the plants

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41197&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41197&ppuser=7269)

Though before I planted them into their new environment, I thought it prudent to show, that their root
systems develop equally fast as the tops

There they are now, with their own little place in the sun (whenever it shines :)), to the right of the

Poisonous House and Garden Plants For Pets and Humans. (http://www.wereyouwondering.com/poisonous-house-and-garden-plants-for-pets-and-humans/)

I should have made this a link, but I encourage everyone who is sprouting new plants to check it out, in case you are not aware of the toxicity of the plant material you are handling. I grow many of these varieties myself, they tend to be extremely attractive and thus desirable. Most important is that you share your knowledge with guests to your garden, and make sure they are aware that these plants protect themselves with toxins, and we all should respect them accordingly. Not meant to discourage horticultural adventures, but as a community service......Happy (responsible) sprouting!:11:

p.s. Castor bean falls about 4 or 5 on most lists, primarily the seed. #1 most lists is oleander....both beautiful, but potentially deadly

Thanks, JaNan, I filed that URL away for future reference. The big danger about Castor Beans is, that the seeds are so beautiful, inviting small children to play with them.

I took some more pics yesterday, 1 week after transplanting the Castor Beans:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41511&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41511&ppuser=7269)

To refresh: This is what the "beans" looked like right after transplanting

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41512&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41512&ppuser=7269)

7 days later: The rapid progress is made clear, when you see, how high they have grown up on
the Basjoo pup. I have tried to take this photo from the same perspective as last week's.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=41513&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41513&ppuser=7269)

This pic. shows it all in more detail

The explosive grows appears to have slowed down a bit, since the secondary(?)* leaves have appeared.

*I could use some help here. I have tried to google that, but could not get anywhere. When seeds first
germinate they almost always always push through the soil with two oval shaped leaves, which I
thought were called 'primary leaves', while the next set, which resembles more the shape of the leaf
of the species were called secondary leaves, but I could not find any confirmation of that.

This is for Olafhenny...and anyone else propogating from seed. There are two basic types of seed plants, monocots and dicots, referring to the appearance of the seed structure, the dicots having two (di) halves, which split to become the primary (sometimes referred to as false as well) leaves. These are essentially storage features, containing the undeveloped embryo, food energy in the form of starches, and initial moisture, proteins and nutrients to enable the seed to sprout. Your initial growth spurt is almost entirely the result of this stored food and water. Once the secondary or first set of "true" leaves develop, the seedling will begin to photosynthesis it's own food from sunlight, water and CO2 in the air. This is often a stage where 1/2 or 1/4 strength solutions of some form of liquid fertilizer can benefit the growth of the new seedling. Less is more, as the new roots can easily be burned by overly rich fertilizing. Hope that is of some help, and what you were looking for! :08:

Hi Sherry,

I am wondering if you still have not received the Castor Bean seeds? It has been 15 days now. Maybe
somebody has heard the seeds rattle around in that little box, I sent them in and though (hoped?) they
were drugs?

Would you like me to send you a replacement?

Best,
Olaf

Let's just wait and see if they arrive this week, Olaf. ;) I've never not received someone's seeds before so there shouldn't be a problem. The post office knows what's inside the envelope and they'll know it's not drugs! Too funny though. :ha:

Our mail service is slow but I'll let you know when they show...

Okay, Sherry, I have waited long enough, This afternoon I received an email, confirming that a DVD,
which I had sent last Thursday to a friend in Germany, arrived there on Tuesday. That is in 5 days (minus
9 hours time zone differential).

I sent the seeds 18 days ago. Not even Canada Post can be that slow. Therefore 1 hour after
receiving that email, I had already wrapped - this time guaranteed not to rattle - and mailed 10 more
seeds for you.

You know, about 50 years ago I worked in Iran, while still headquartered in Germany. Any letters mailed
from Teheran arrived in cities with international airports in Germany on the second day after mailing and
in small towns on the third day; - just like clock work. And that was before everything got “streamlined”
with computers and postal codes and such.

Maybe we should farm out some of our postmasters to Iran for a while, so they can learn how it is done.
Best,
Olaf

When I send seed packets to Canada, I use a USPS flat-rate Intl envelope. I also put a label on it that says:
GARDEN SEEDS
MAY BE OPENED FOR
AGRICULTURAL INSPECTION.
It always takes 2-3 days unless going to some far-flung corner of Saskatchewan. Every packet has been delivered. Live plants though, is another story.

Olaf I wish you had waited, or at least double checked with me to make sure you had the correct address.

In all my years of exchanging seeds, I've never flat out not received someone's seeds before. I'm more inclined to believe that perhaps the address was incorrect.

You really don't need to do anything special to send seeds to Canada and there's no need to write what's inside either. It's all fine and they will get here with no problems. ;)

Thanks for sending more though, Olaf. :D Nice of you.

Thank you Richard, that is excellent advice. However I was sending these seeds from Canada to Canada,
and such precautions should not be necessary, if no international borders are crossed
Best,

Yup, I just checked and it's correct, Olaf. ;)

I think I will get both envelopes in the end. Like I said, I've never ever not received someone's seeds before so you'd be a first.

Those precautions are not necessary even when mailing internationally, as I've exchanged seeds with people all over the world and folks just sent things the standard way without doing anything special, so don't worry about that.

I've always just mailed things to other countries the standard way for the most part too, except when I mail express post. I've never had any problems with people not getting my seeds, nor me not receiving theirs. :D
