View Full Version : Smaller and thinner leave after winter
Hi,
two of my survivers of the winter, a Rajapuri and an Ice Cream are showing a significally strange second leaf after growth has started this spring.
The first leaf, that showed, was perfectly normal. But the second leaf was much smaller and thinner. No other signs of damage are visible and the growth hasn't stopped.
Did anyone experience anything like that? I searched the web and this forum, but didn't find anything.
I hope the next leave will normal again...

Did you just put them in the ground? If so; being the root cause. I've had that happen. :^) Next should be bigger unless the banana isn't getting something in the way of nutrition, water, or light.

I wouldn't worry about that at all. It's probably just due to less than optimal conditions during the development of that leaf. That first leaf was probably already developed from previously (last fall, maybe even) when conditions were better and just now came out. I'm sure the more leaves come out, the bigger and wider they will become. Hit it with some fertilizer and wait.
And yeah, if you just transplanted it into the soil, it's likely because the plant is working on putting out some good roots rather than worrying about large leaves. It'll perk up very soon, though!
Either way, nothing to worry yourself about.
Thanks for your answers.
That's what I expected to hear and what I thought, too. The plants seem to be perfectly alright, except for the smaller leafs.
I transplanted one of the bananas to a bigger pot. The other is still in the same pot. But both of them have these leafs.
The next leaf is underway and I hope it'll be bigger.

Do you have any Pics of it?

Here is my Rajapuri. The smaller and thinner leaf is clearly visible. The plant itself is still small:

My Zebrina pup is doing the same thing.
Last 3 leafs have been noticeably smaller than the previous.
I think it is root bound we will see in a couple weeks when it is ground planted.
Good luck.

Have a DC doing something similiar, one of the leaves was really small, they're getting increasingly bigger.

Last Winter I had to cut my Burmese Blue banana plant off because it was hitting the ceiling.
Did really good growing through the winter but now it's getting warmer my plant is growing weird.
You can see the leaves are a lot smaller.
I'm sending a pictures along with this.
Do I have a Problem?
Or will it come out of this as it gets warmer?
I don't want to lose my plant.
I need help?
Can e-mail me at: cm.mesenbrink@cfu.net
With an answer.
Thanks

Is the soil moist? Looks like it needs water.

Hi, same with my Ensete Maurelli(red leaf. New leaf is very small and not red. I fed it so I figured not enough light. Still chilly here in NJ.

I had that happen to me last year when I dug a bunch up and potted them. They weren't getting as much light. I'm there was some shock involved as well. Nothing a lil TLC won't cure :^)

I experience that sort of thing in late winter with at least 50 per cent of my plants, and it happens to all species of bananas that I have. It usually happens for about two or three leaves per plant before they return to a more normal broad shaped leaf. watering, light, temps and soil all remain constant through these cycles, and the plants affected all come through no worse for wear. They are not growing slower, but normally, so I don't give it much concern. As far as lopping off a psuedostem because things are getting too big for inside, I think it shakes things up down in "HQ" (corm), but as long as you don't overwater (remember, all of those water evaporators you cut off are gone) things should come back fine after a little weirdness... just make sure there are no mites helping to disfigure those leaves!!

Yes, my Rajapuri just developed a second, small and narrow leaf and the next one's about to come out. I can't tell if it'll be also small but I don't worry, because growth is okay and there're no mites or anything else. I watered very carefully, so I hope everything will be back to normal very soon. My Ice Cream also has one of these leafs and seems to grow a bit slower at the moment, but I recently repotted it, so it might develope new roots.
My Basjoo is just fine and started growing like weed - with normal sized leafs.
As it'll get warmer every day now, I expect regualr growth very soon... (temps going up to 25°C in the day (70 - 80°F).
Hi and thank you everybody,
both of my problem kids have recovered.
The Raja puri is back to normal size leafs. About three were smaller.
My Ice Cream is also on it's way back to normal. It took a bit longer and more leafs (about 4 - 5) to normal growth.
But now it's easy, because we had warm - hot weather the whole month, except for about a week with "only" around 20 ° C during the day.

It is amazing how fast they spring back once they can go out and play. All of mine are exploding with new "normal" growth. Hope all is well with you there.. things have been sounding a little rough.. Take care and good luck.. Parid.
