yes soaking is a great idea, somethin else i didn't do :( you could use peat moss. also you could use soil with a lot of pertile in it, 70%pertile and 30 light soil.

I got some from those guys I sent half of them to Jimmmy. The ones I kept haven't done anything, but I don't have Ante's (he's a germinating machine) technique worked out yet either... I wish you alot of Luck & Good Fortune :^)

Hi everyone, I just planted my ensete seeds after a 4 day soak in sterile water changed
daily. I read in my propagating book that for very hard seeds( scarify) rub on sand paper
wearing the outer coat while not damaging the embryo inside. Hot water soak of 113 degrees also helps. I have a food warmer plate and set it for the lowest setting where it didn't get too hot to put my finger in. Now the're on a heat matt. Temperature will be kept at no higher than 85 degrees. I planted all 20 since I've read so much about viability. Hopefully all this works. I only had one floater. I will keep you posted. BTW my
seed came from whatcom seedtrack.com.

btw, a few more sunk to the bottom so does this mean a few may be still fresh?

I think they are viable. About 7 of my 20 took thier time sinking. I would drain the water and add hot (not boiling water) Eventually all but one sunk. I also
wore the seedcoat with sandpaper just enough as not to disturb the embryo.
I forgot to mention water temp of 113 degrees is good. i am into plant propagation big time. I got this info from one of my books. This is my first time with banana seed(ensete). I like the challenge. Mine are in a propagating case on a heat matt at 85 degrees now. Good Luck with your seeds.

Yeah, from what I've heard, floating is usually a bad sign. Who knows, though...soak em, plant em and give it a try! Got nothing to lose now, right?
PS, those first seeds look like earplugs LOL. :ha:

Put seeds into a jiffy greenhouse thingy and used jiffy seed starter soil

Hre is more info on breaking seed dormancy. I read where you can treat tough seed with
a mild solution of hydrochloric or phosphoric acid. This will simulate the effect of passing
through an animals digestive tract. Soaking solution must be very dilute. You must be cautious doing this. I also saw a product called GA3 (gibberellic acid) it is a powder mix.
I saw it on Ebay today. It might be worth looking into.
