Hi: I live in southwest PA temps are starting to warm up(in the 60's). I no it will not last but being new to this I am not sure when to uncover my plants or plant my new ones outside. Being in zone 6a I am looking for others who live in this type of weather for advise. I dont want to uncover to soon but spring fever is here and I don't want to wait till the end of May like I did last year.:ha:

Well hi, up here in southern On I put all my bananas out side on May 24th. I think you should be okay to uncover in the end of April first week in May. The day time temps can bein the late 50's -60's the night time temps are what you have to worry about. good luck !

Late May is the best time.

I'd think you'ld be good the first week of may as well, but I would look @ your 10-day forecast before I wasted any time or plants... :^)

I live in Columbus, Ohio. Our average last frost is around May 2nd-May 5th. Considering plants don't do well under 40 degrees, I would be hesitant to do so anytime before May 12th-May 15th.

Buckeye: You wouldn't uncover any plants that are outside? I thought The cold hardy bananas could take temps in the 20's? The ones I have in the house I will keep inside until May. Then plant. Thanks

I live in Z5 & I take mine out first week in May. If they call for frost - usually overnight, I just wrap the p stem. It just seems too late for me to bring out mid -late May. Last 2 years were nice weather late April - beginning May, & then we had unusual frost around May 28. I just wrapped them for the night.

I uncovered mine(basjoos, mulched)a few days ago.
I take the umbrella g-houses I used on my palms and the x-mas lights and set them up this way.
I have a Washy that is still in it's bigger umbrella g-house,they are all connected to a Thermocube that turns on the heat at 35 and off at 45.

It gets up into the 80s in the sun, this should give them about a month jump(headstart),it also allowed me to get all the slime off and let them dry out a little.
Not sure if they will come up from the corms but the pups are still alive and I am sure they will
send out more.
I will try and post a pic tomorrow if I remember.

15 day forecast is for all mid/upper 60s after Tuesday:woohoonaner:

We haven't had frost here for about two weeks now, but I looked at two different forcasts, and they say we could get something tomorrow night and Saturday night. One says Fri 28°F and Sat 35°F. The other says Fri 23°F and Sat 32°F.
Last year, we uncovered the basjoos on April 17. Everything survived, and we managed to save the p-stems right to the top. The first picture shows one of the uncovered stems.

The leaf started unfurling right away. It was kind of yellow, from lack of light, but had turned green after several hours.

This last picture is about six weeks after uncovering - doing fine.

That's awesome!
That's what I am going for this year, not sure if the p-stem made it but the pups are alive.
I hope mine looks like that be the end of May too!
We'll see what some 70s next week do for them.
I would be happy with half or a fourth of that! NICE!:goteam:

I planted a stemless pup the other day. Why I was bored and wanted to plant a nanner. =]
The low for tonight was 33 now it has dropped to 27 I covered it from the rain today, but looks like I am going to have to dig it up.

It was a plant and pray type situation. I think I will be doing most planting in about a month. We will have to see.

Good luck to everyone.

How big is it?
I am sure you could just throw a thick blanket and plastic over it if it's small.

hmm it was about a 2' p stem I chopped it just above ground. corm is not to big. It has only been in there a few days so I doubt it's even rooted yet. I could try to cover it more. I think it's a namwah. so that kinda has me worried.
I will leave it. That was the whole point in planting it anyways.

I wait until Mother's Day (May 9th this year) to plant anything tender. Bulbs can go as soon as it's 50+ at night. I've uncovered my basjoo clump already. I didn/t mulch it this year; just let the p-stems and leaves die and act asa mulch. We'll see how it worked.

Hi, I'm in central NJ. A word of caution. I got excited about the temps warming
into upper 60's. My Ensete Redleaf was doing great producing a new leaf
weekly. I thought it would love some fresh air and a little sun. I put it where it had protection from too much sun. When I brought it back in a couple hours later, It was drooping. I freaked out! I got it thru the winter and now I'm going to lose it. It took some time for it to get over the shock. It did nothing for about the next 10 days. It finally opened a new leaf yesterday.
Thank God!!! I couldn't bear to lose this one. Weather is turning cold again
and too unpredictable to take chances Try some seeds indoors under lights
to help you over spring fever.
