Ok guys got an interesting story for ya.

Out of all my outside banana plants that I did not put in the green house I have one that survived like nothing happened. It kept 2 perfectly green leaves all winter and a pup that survived all winter. It was in a pot next to some that were buried in the ground. I do not know what variety it is as I dug it up from someone that had no clue what it is, all they knew is they would not die no matter how hard they tried to get rid of them until I dug up a huge root ball that they did not know was in the ground. They would just keep digging up the pups and throw them in the woods and some of them were growing not even being in soil....

I did nothing to protect this banana and all the other banana plants even the ones I covered lost all leaves and then some...

for sure....

the only difference in the plant is there were 4 leaves when winter started and it hasn't pushed out new leaves and there isn't a new leaf pushing up yet that you can see from the top. I had 7 of them and gave all the others away to friends and family in the fall.

That is very good knowing the weather & how's it been. It would be really awesome if it were a etible fruiting kind, that's low maintenance.. You could sell all the pups... Hope it fruits for you this year so everyone can find out :^)

Martin, do you know how the others did over winter (the ones you gave away to family and friends)?

Not yet but I am going to find out.

Most of them went further south miami area to my in-laws and they had them really well protected and seemed to do great down there. But 2 of them I gave away to friends in Orlando and I will get an update.

Looks and sounds like M. balbisiana. They are very common and very hardy, not just to cold, but also to drought, heat, wind...anything, they are very tough plants.
