Okay, about 3 or 4 weeks ago I bought this honkin huge mango at the big bird and i took it home. When I started cutting it I noticed it was not ripe enough yet. So I put it back in the bag and put in fridge. Well, I forgot about it till this passed Sunday and pulled it out to cut it up. To my surprise I cut down the one side and there was what looked like a stick coming thru the flesh but not the skin, so I took all the flesh from around the seed and I guess it germinated in the fridge! The seed was popped open and looked like the stem was growing out!

Now the question is, if I pot this up (currently sitting in a tray with thick layer of warm moist papertowels around it) will it grow out?

I don't see why not, I germinated a mango seed once.

Pot it up, keep it warm, and give it ample sunlight. I have grown hundreds of the in this fashion. I then leave them in a pot for two winters before I set them out. I only plant those that can survive a slight freeze.

I don't buy them in a store, I only use seeds from known cultivars in close proximity to another desired cultivar. If you leave it in the towel it may rot, make sure the medium is well drained. Once the plant is established it will take inundation by water :2239:

thanks guys, I will pot it up tonite and put it in a warm window. I dont plan on keeping it much past the point of out- growing the house since I severely doubt any mango cultivar will grow in Ohio. Unless I can keep it pruned to about 8 x 6 feet and in a pot. Other than that it is just for the short term experience and just to say I grew a mango tree in zone 5a/5b/6a area!

Well, I'd say it's worth it in that regard. As long as you enjoy growing it and have a fun story to tell later, that's really all that matters. There are so many members on this site from zones 5 and colder that grow tropical plants. We all dare to do what mother nature said we couldn't! :ha:

Brian, you got that absolutely correct! screw what natural laws and limitations you may! Just because they say we can't doesn't mean we won't!
