Today I found a big priority box outside my door... WHOOPEE!!
All I was expecting was a small box w/ a couple guava fruits, but there are 3 big guavas (one's eaten now), a white Hawaiian spider lily, & a big red ginger about 18 inches w/ 3 shoots. Both very healthy looking w/ very nice roots. Thank you Andrew...it's like Christmas again! :) I wasn't expecting the plants. I have pineapple guava rooting for you, so I'm hoping they take. You'll love them!
Gonna do a complaint to my post office though. I checked my mail at 2 & - nothing. It's always here between 1 & 2, so I just decided at 3:30 to check again & there was mail & the box laying next to porch under mailbox. If something can't fit in the mailbox, they are s'posed to ring the doorbell & hand it to you, or (if no answer) leave a slip in box to come to PO to pick it up. Thank God it is not wicked cold out or it coulda died. Or, what if I didn't recheck for mail? It woulda stayed there till tomorrow.
Both plants potted in their new happy home! And, I'll plant some of those guava seeds. Thanks again Andrew :)

Yeah, I always thought the post office was supposed to ring your doorbell if things didn't fit in the box (and the same thing for UPS, etc) but recently all of them have just been leaving things on our doorstep. That or sometimes they stick it on the doorbell and ding-dong-dash LOL. Not sure why they are being weird with that these days....very antisocial...we used to know our UPS guy by name and give him cookies. Now we don't even really see them when they bring us stuff!

Yeah, I know my ups guy & he always rings doorbell & has me sign that I got it. I just heard on weather that today was the warmest day in about 3 weeks so I was lucky there. And, if someone walking by saw it, they might have stolen it!
My Mom sent me something that she insured for I think $20.00 or so. The mailman left it on porch where anyone could steal it, so I told her to claim that I never got it & get the money, so she did LOL.

I think you should all send me something us mail & insure it for $100.00 (cost maybe $5.00?) & then tell them I never got it & you can get $100.00 LOL. They will not have any proof!
(just kidding... but it's a thought LOL)

LOL...Patty, I believe that is called 'fraud.' I'm all for cheating unfair systems a little, but just be careful. :ha:

Woohoo, Andrew is truly a nice and generous guy!
Patty, I do a lot of mailing and previously asked my Postmaster about the rules about leaving packages, etc. I was told there is nothing about the carrier having to ring doorbells, etc. and that the carrier can leave the package at the door if they feel it is safe or, if they don't think it's safe, they can request a signature when delivery confirmation service has been requested. Otherwise, they can leave a slip and have you pick it up at the Post Office. Basically it's the carrier's choice though the mailer can put a notice on the package such as "Carrier: Leave if No Response" to tell the carrier to leave the package even if the homeowner doesn't come to the door. My house is nearly a half mile from the highway so the carrier always leaves it at my door unless it's an insured package, etc. which requires a signature.
I've never had UPS request my signature on any packages and they regularly leave packages here. I've been told by UPS they they also leave it up to the driver's discretion.
FedEx will request my signature for most Express packages if I'm here, though I think they also will leave it here if I'm not here. Ground and Home never request my signature and regularly leave packages here when I'm not here.
DHL isn't a carrier that comes here often but they have delivered packages for me both to my house and even to my neighbor's house (my shipment) without a signature. I once had $4,800 of camera lenses sitting out at my neighbor's place for several hours until I initiated an expedition to locate my package which online tracking showed as delivered.
I do sometimes tell my carriers if I'm expecting a package to leave it out of the sun, etc. if I'm not home. I'll sometimes leave a big ice chest on my porch and ask them to put packages in it. I treat them nice and they are usually quite good to me.

Yeah, if you want the price of stamps and postage to continue to rise rapidly every few years.
:islandsharkbanana:
Our postman isn't very friendly and can hardly speak English (Pretty sure he's Mexican). And... he drives very fast.
My off topic post for the night... congrats on the package, Patty. That was awfully generous of you, Andrew!

Patty, I know you were just joking, but the carrier requires a signature acknowledging delivery of the package for insured mail. You'll need another plan to make your millions! :ha:

Yes, I was kidding Harvey LOL, but 20 yrs ago, my Mom called to say watch the mail - she sent soemthing 'insured'. She never insured anything before, so when I came home & saw this little box on porch- in plain view of ppl walking by, I was angry at the mailman at the time. Anyone could have taken it, & there was no proof that I got it so that's when I told Mom to make the claim. That time, I was supposed to sign for it.
My reg mailman is cool...I gave him $20.00 one Christmas to show appreciation. It's the one's working on his days off! I once had a temp ring my doorbell to collect 15 cents postage due, so I ran & found a quarter & said 'keep it'. He handed me the letter & it was one that I sent to TX & no one was there to give the 15 cents postage due, so it came back to me. It was stamped "postage due" & then stamped "return to sender". It was the other end s'posed to pay -- NOT ME LOL. What a dummy!

Speaking of.....2 hours ago my doorbell rang & I saw UPS truck in front. The guy (a new one) was handing me the box & took it away from me just when he noticed my addy (IN BIG #'s) is 1852, & the addy on box is 1652. ooops
& yes, I woulda returned it or called ups to come get it LOL

I used to think leaving the package depended on the $$$ value, but I came home the other day to find my new 42" TV in my doorway.... I guess they only do it if shipper requires a signature.
Scary though, I guess they save money in the end- since relatively few packages get stolen.
