My name is Patrick & I have had banana plants in my yard for about 5 years now & the only year I had any success in keeping them alive over the winter (I live 15 miles north of Atlanta Ga) was last year when I had two plants about 10 feet high each. I wrapped the ball with ground cover & a blanket & they both survived the winter and grew to about 12-14 feet tall over the summer. I did the same with them this past Nov but I'm not convinced they will survive this severe weather. Complicating the matter is I have no clue as to what kind or strain they are but I absolutely love these plants as does my wife. Can someone describe the m ost popular kinds along with their names so I can begin to understand how to get them to survive the winter. Thanks.

Welcome to the site! Hope you enjoy it here and learn a lot. There are quite a few edible types that are somewhat cold-hardy. There are plenty of articles in the forums about it...should be easy to find in the Cold Hardy Bananas (http://www.bananas.org/f15/) forum.

Welcome! Also check out the Wiki (top bar) for all sorts of info. As for the most common cold hardy edoble banana in the South--that is probably Orinoco. I have had mine for about 25 yrs and they have survived single digit temps a couple times (the corms). As for how to help them survive, mulch them well, plant in well draining soil and keep them as dry as possible in winter (cold and wet= rot).
