Hello everyone, I'm totally new to bananas, but I hope to gain some experience on this nice forum! You guys seem to be friendly, that's what I like:woohoonaner:

Thanks, saltydad! I lived in Odessa for a while, and visit it often. It's 220 km from Kherson. Lovely city!

Welcome from Brunei, one of small countries on Borneo Island!
Thanks everyone on your welcomes!
Currently I've got only Super Dwarf Cavendish, and I'm trying to germinate E. glaucum and R. madagascariensis (though it's not a banana). It's nearly impossible to get something other than M. basjoo here, so I'll be trying nanas from seed. Too bad they're hard to germinate, but that brings fun to it!:goteam:

You have a Ravenala madagascariensis!? I love those! I have a tiny one that is maybe a foot tall right now. How big is your traveler's tree?

No, Bryan, I'm only trying to germinate them! Love them too! I hope that I'll got at least 3-4 of them germinated. They look awesome, it's a pity I can't grow them outside.

Thanks, island cassie, you're among those who inspired me with your fascinating success with E. glaucum! How are your plants doing?:goteam:

Thanks for the kind words Yuri - they are about 90cm tall and in need of repotting I think (I am in England at the moment) - I have given quite a few away - some to a Thai restaurant for their grounds and another to a Filipina friend. I have not had much luck with the other banana seeds where a few have gone mouldy and the others are doing nothing.
Good luck with your seeds - hope you see something soon!

Yeah, growing traveler's tree outside is a no-go for me as well. I am in zone 6 now but I'm from Iowa, which is zone 5 or lower. Hopefully I'll have tall ceilings in my house in a few years LOL.
Thanks everyone for your warm welcomes!

Tall and transparent, right? :) Travellers tree is a must for you, since it's RAVEnala lol :0517:
Welcome Yuri, sorry I missed when you first introduced yourself. Lots of people from Ukraine here in frozen New Jersey. Nice to have you here:woohoonaner:
Thanks Bob! Lots of people from Ukraine everywhere, but not a lot of people grow nanas in Ukraine.:coldbanana:

Lots of people from Ukraine everywhere,
Agreed. :ha: The colder it gets somewhere, the more Russians and Ukrainians you'll find there. Hello and welcome by the way! From your western neighbour. ;)
Thanks, Jack! A lot of our people love the combination of frost, snow and sun (aka Siberian High). Honestly, I can't quite appreciate that.

Me neither, I'm seriously thinking about going away from Europe. Not only because of the climate though.

Here are some pics of what I'm trying here. I've made a germination box, it's heated with x-mas lights and a heating pad. When the sun is out, I switch it off, because it easily reaches 40C (104F) inside. I'm propagating some palms in there, and nanas as well.

And here are some nanas - SDC's, as it's hard to get some others here. Separated them from two mother plants.http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2576/4343945568_90a4cb69e3_b.jpg

Very nice idea. If you don't want to bother with manual switches, you could use a small photodiode, control circuit, some 1€ processor and a little bit of programming and when the sun comes out, the inner heating system will switch off automatically. One more advice. I noticed, that if you lower the temps during the night (or circa 12 hours) to maybe 25°C and then raise the temperature back during the day, the seeds will germinate much more easily, it's like simulating day/night conditions.
Do you study on some sort of technical university?

Thanks! Actually, I studied law, but I really want to improve my knowledge in technical field.
I thought about installing a thermostat in there that will switch off the pad and the lights when the temp is above 35C, but your photodiode idea is sweet!
As for temperature fluctuations - I take seeds like Ravenala and Butia to a cooler place in the night, because they are said to respond well to a temperature changes. But ensete, areca and wodyetia seeds stay in
the propagator all the time - guess, they don't need fluctuations. Correct me if I'm wrong :)
Looking good!
Thanks!
