a photo storage site!?!?!?! Sorry, but it seems like this site is becoming a place for storing pics from everything from family portraits to many other non related pics!!! Hey, I can appreciate members being proud of their family, as I am one of them. But, I do not store my family pics or any thing non related to this site in the photo gallery. Why don't everyone just get a photobucket account, or the like and copy and paste the pictures they are wanting to share in a thread instead of saving them to this site? Help me out here, by explaining why one would post a non related picture on this sites photo galleries?
Anyone else feel this way, or am I the only one?!?!?!?!?!

It's nice that this forum is kept to bananas and other plant related stuff.
Unlike many forums that in time stray way off from there intended purpose.
With that being said I see no problem with people posting a couple pics of unrelated stuff, which is usually something they are talking about in the 'Tiki Hut'.
At the same time I think people could cut back a bit. 5 shots of the same thing is a little much. It only clogs up space that could otherwise be used for naners, and makes cruising the photo galleries annoying. My 2c.

Like I stated above, if I want to post a pic to a thread, I simply copy and paste from my FREE photobucket account and it works fine. No need to store it on this site's bandwidth as I see it! Please do not take this personal as it is not meant to make anyone mad, just something that I think needs to be discussed!

I too think that straying from the gardening related topics might lead to many threads one wouldn't expect on gardening forum. But then I myself posted here today pics of my vermiculture set and it hasn't that much in common with bananas (or does it? dunno...).

It kinda does get annoying when it's overdone, yes. I did though, post two pics of my pets along time ago because everyone else was. I hope it doesn't bother anyone that I did.

Listen guys, I am not asking for admission, but just wanted to bring this up for discussion to see if there isn't something that can be done. I still feel this site's photo galleries should be strictly used for storing pics of bananas, other plants, and subjects related to the growth of them. Would like to see if there is something that needs to be suggested in the future or just let everyone post anything to the photo galleries... Again, input would be nice from everyone... I ain't trying to harp on anyone, but would like to get a consensus on this...

Wouldn't bother me to only post plant related pictures.

Would it be possible for the technically savy people who run this site to create a link of sorts in the photo uploading area to an offsite safe harbor for photos (like photobucket) and suggest that all non .org type photos be sent there? Ultimately, we all come to this site for one main reason.....Bananas and other plants. The beauty of the site is the wealth of knowledge and photos that or the most part are easy to find and navigate. Adding piles of non related photos and/or conversations in threads only hinders it's effectivness in my opinion. I would also approve of "the site" actively cleansing itself of IDLE non related photos and threads to maximize the sites potential.:waving:

Just a Question about "IDLE" photos. If any pictures that have been posted in the past were removed off the banana photo galleries, would they vanish from the post as well? Or even to another area? I know if you were to move a picture from one section to another section on Photobucket, you can't bring it up any more where it was posted eariler.

Good question!! That would be horrible to have pictures vanish from the threads.. even non banana related photos!!

Yes, once you move a picture, rename it, delete it etc the link is broken & the picture is gone from the post

All the more reason to have a photobucket account and just copy and paste from it. Then the pic will stay in the thread until YOU decide to do something different with the pic!

I cleaned my photos up today. Thanks
...And then turn around a post a picture of a postcard from Texas!?!?! What's up with that? I like getting post cards as much as the next person, but why post it? I am still a bit confused...

Gotcha, that is why when I tried to find my pictures of my orinoco I had cut down and ruined the bloom I couldn't find it in my pictures here. They were only in the thread I had started about it and taken the photos from my photo bucket account!!
You know part of the reason I haven't posted very many pictures is because I thought they had to start from the photo albums on this site and didn't want all my weeds and problem plants staying there on display!:ha: The light bulb is turning on!
Ps my concentration has been way down lately!

I personally use 3 different photo hosting websites but I still have a few non banana pics hosted here because they are related to to the board, it's members, or discussions here that are board/member related.
As for links being broken that will happen no matter where you host your pictures if you start deleting, renaming or moving them around.
Anyway, to answer your question, I don't mind seeing a picture that's not banana related. It's all part of life's rich pageantry. :ha:

I think you bring up a very good point Randy. I absolutely don't want to start any type of contention. But, I have enjoyed many of the off topic pictures. I enjoyed photos of pets, yards, and various projects - photos that let us get to know the individuals here. Is it a banana site or is it a banana organization/community? If the storage or the uploading caused an undue cost or strain on the bandwidth or server I can understand limitations. If that is that case I'm sure Jarred could set some regulations. Depending on the hosting service storage is some cases is unlimited. I'm sure we could have regulations that only banana related pictures could be uploaded to the server. However, if the space is unlimited or capacity maxed out in the foreseeable future I really don't see the need. I love browsing through the galleries and seeing all the photos and hope it can remain. Again, if the photos are causing an increased cost or uploading is causing a strain on the bandwidth I'll by all means cooperate and use my photobucket account.

I'm not sure but if the photo is save in photobucket would it have to upload the photo each time the thread is opened? That may use more bandwidth?
Michael
Randy I think one major point that you're missing is that the best part of this .org are the people who make it up. A lot of us have become very friendly over time and enjoy getting postcards ( for just one example)and posting them for all to see. There's a certain sense of camaraderie that occurs between all the good people here and it just spills over in to some of us posting snippets of our personal lives.... whats the harm? No one complained about the "post a pic of your pet" thread..... oops will that be deleted too now? Would you suggest the "tiki hut" be deleted? Maybe the "chat" too since that can stray from the limited subject matter that you seem to be advocating lately. They're there for non banana related subjects and have been fun/ contentious and certainly entertaining at times.....its been many things but you can't say it was ever boring. To some it makes being here so much better knowing there's real people out there with similar interests. If bananas.org were to become a purely scientific and or subject resricted site as some out there seem to prefer the org wouldn't be near as good as its become. We all came here as fellow banana growers and we all continue to be. I dont see the harm in being able to talk and post freely as friends with varied interests with bananas as the common thread.

I think photo's / Albums should have regular individual maintenance. It's just like PM's you can only have 500 but why wait till your overloaded. I can see uploading something short-term but after its shared in a month delete it if its not pertinent to the sight. Perminent storage is for some other form of drive to be stored in a safe place. :^)

Well said Bob, and you too Pauly! My interests are much broader than just bananas & it's nice to know we can talk about anything here. Other forums that I have been too have the same thing...a place to talk about "anything". I enjoyed looking at Paulys artwork, & pets, & pics of members, & even members children! If we can ONLY talk about, or post pics of bananas, this forum would not be very active.

I would not delete any existing pics
If you linked to them in any thread that picture is lost on the thread
That creates more of a problem
Better to just use photobucket or something else going forward
One site I'm on they require every picture to be uploaded to your album in order to have the picture on any post
I use photobucket so never upload any pics
Its easier to have the pics in one place when you are on multiple forums

Honest to goodness pictures of Randy's yard really inspired me. When I start planning my planting I go look at his pictures first. I don't know if I'll ever achieve what he has but last year was a lot better than the year before and I hope this year is better yet. He is way organized on photo bucket too and maybe one day I'll get better organized there.

I hear you on the photo bucket disorganization... I loaded up so many pics over the years just so I would have another copy of them somewhere besides hard drives that could die and its a mess. My wife keeps saying she will organize if for me, but then again I think I have too many things that I need her to organize and the pictures are not very high on the list. LOL
