We harvested Guavas today and my wife made Puree and Jam :woohoonaner:. The puree is great in shakes, on ice cream or right out of the jar. The trees are from 1999 from seeds from the Guava Kai Plantation in Kauai. They have made it so far down to the low 30's. The fruit gets harvested the end of January and for a few weeks in February. The fruit is meyer lemon size. We harvest a couple hundred every year. They are a little to tart for me to eat from the tree. I am growing some seedlings and can spare a few if anyone is interested once the cold subsides.

Last December it was 34 degrees for two nights. In 2007 it was a bit colder and the plants did loose some branches. I have two trees and one Strawberry Guava tree. It tastes great! I have some Thia Papaya fruit on the plant and am looking forward to trying them out. This is the first year for fruit.

Well I still have to do a whole tone of resurches to find suitable tropicals for my area. Main problem here is duration of low temperature.

Andrew, what kind of guavas do you have? I have tropical pink, ruby red, lemon (some ppl don't like the taste of them) and pineapple all from seed. I tasted the pineapple guava & they are sooooo good! I got a few blossoms that set fruit last year but either they fell off or squirrels got them. Hoping I'll get fruits from all of them this year.
Oh yeah, they stay in pots all year & get hauled in & out of sunroom.

Hello Patty,
I hope all is well. I have one Strawberry Guava and two yellow fruiting plants that came from Kauai. We were leaving the Guava Plantation and I saw a fruit on the groung. I took it and collected the seeds and I have two trees that produce like crazy. They are in the ground and my wonderful wife has made so much jam and puree and the trees still have tons more on them. Next to the Guavas I have a Thai Papaya and a Mexican Papaya. I have in my green house one more Thai and one Caribean Papaya that will go in the ground this year. Just my Thai so far has big fruits on it. I really push the envelope here. I planted a Star Fruit in the ground last year and it made it over the winter. We will see about fruit. You have to be commended to bring your plants in and out. I tried that with two Coconut palms. They grew to 7 feet and got to big to move with my back and one winter they were taken by the cold. I hope you get fruit this year. Let me know if you want me to ship you some fruit.

I imagine in California you don't have maggots ruining your fruit like we do here in South Florida. Anyways you have to try making guava paste and then eat it with cotija(Queso blanco) on a cracker.

No maggots just gophers. I have to make wire baskets for everything that goes in the ground. It sucks!
