View Full Version : What are these bugs floating in the water?

I have several buckets of water inside my winter growing area, to give some humidy to the plants. I see these bugs floating around on the water surface, they're also on the ground. Are they harmful to the plants? If so, how do I get rid of 'em?

Thanks,

They look like knats, but hard to tell from the picture. Get some free "mosquito fish" from the county and drop 4 or so in each bucket.

Gnats or fruit flies. A fish will go a long way to remedy that problem.

I'll just spray some soap on top of the water, that should kill them. Don't want to worry about fish right now, especially since I'll probably be done with overwintering the plants by mid March.

Definitly gnats, I get the same problem in the winter.

Look like fungus gnats to me. I have some on my plants right now, but I'm just tolerating it since it's not too bad. If you have a lot, though, consider taking action (though, I've tried a few insecticides and had no luck). And a fly-strip certainly helps keep their numbers at bay a bit.
