Hi! I've been growing bananas for 12 or more years in my home at Grey Lynn Auckland NZ.
I was given a sucker by a old Scotsman neighbour whose wife is Tongan. So I have been with the one strain of tongan ladyfinger ever since. I have only recently been googling and learning of banana online, and have started selling lots of suckers on our ebay and distributing pro banana propaganda to my buyers!
NZ climate is not always suitable for banana, though Northland and many microclimates are suitable, and can usually produce good fruit within 2 years.
Here's a photo of my small banana patch. The rest of my property is too exposed to the west winds and too much shade in winter. I have others growing out of the wind at friends homes....
