It was 74 here today and they are saying it will be for the next week. :woohoonaner: I have Spring Fever so badly, I took several of my plants outside to enjoy the sun and warmth. These were all in the house or the garage with no signs of growth, but they have some this evening! Yippee! :goteam:

We hovering in the mid 40s for the next week or so....I want to plant outside so badly. I'm starting palm seeds and pepper seeds this week and making tons of paper pots for starting seeds later on. I'm also thinking of making a coldframe to get some greens going in.

I get spring fever as soon as the holidays are over even though the worst is yet to come weather wise! I have little drain holes punched into egg cartons and start going through the seed packets, then there are the garden catologs that start pouring in for me to sit and look at with my note pad for 'the list'.

74 degrees? Okay, now you're just being cruel! :D
I admit that after last weeks -13F wind chills - this weeks balmy 32F weather has triggered spring fever. I was out in the yard with a light sweater thinking "springs just around the corner!". Only to remember that it's still mid January and somewhat dependable spring weather is still 4 (or more) months away.
Not to mention I've been battling spider mites on my basji (thats two basjoo) for the past week.
Ugh.

We have 60-degree weather here in Georgia. Although it's not in the 70's, I really can't complain. But the good weather is not here to stay. Otherwise, I'd like to plant my tree (not really sure whether it's a plum tree or not) outdoors; it's dying in the basement because of the white mite problem earlier, and I'd really hate to lose it.

You guys with your warm weather....it's been warm here (for INdiana) but that means 30's and an occasional 40. The big news is there hasn't been any sun here for like 14 days. All overcast. No direct sun. But the good news is that I've only had to water anything once a week for the last two weeks, even new seedlings only need a light mist occasionally. So I've just about had a vacation! So I started some super hot pepper seeds today for spring season, I like to start them early so they get peppers earlier.
I started habanero, bhut jolokia, starfish, bishops crown, jamaican red and yellow scotch bonnets, tabasco, choc habanero, white habanero, yellow peter pepper, and thai hot. When I watered the seeds in with warm water, the fumes made me cough, so they must be good. Also I picked 7 Bhut Jolokias from the greenhouse. We tried to eat a small slice of one, three of us ate three small slices. Since I was the girl, I ended spitting mine out. The guys thought they could tough it out, they'll be sorry later!

Wow. I got my thong out at 37*F and you people with your 70*F. Today is 51*F. I am ready fro spring too but I cannot take my bananas out until end of May or later. Even though Spring is in March. By the way March 14 is the time change again. My water bananas in the basement are fine buy the way. At 50*F at the coolest they are fine sitting in water. Hard to believe isn't it. The second one I have I started growing it myself in water. Not even sure which kind it is. I started it last June. So far so good. I soon will be planting my water lily seeds to see if any sprout.

My Spring Fever is abating fast.
It reached 82F yesterday and I caught my first pompano of the year. Made it almondine with a side of linguine in white clam sauce - with real fresh clams from the local wholesaler. The garden stuff planted between the bananas is taking off, and tomorrow 35 big spinach plants go in - started from seed.
As I trim off the frost damaged dead stuff from my bananas, I'm grateful that another year of naner fruit won't be lost. Forcast from now on looks good.
To all you folks suffering from the cold - don't forget about the thousands of forclosed homes here in So Fla. Many bargains to be found.

Not too much longer before spring. Im just hoping that we dont get any colder (I think the lowest I got according to weather.com for the winter is only 15F (maybe a little lower), but not bad for a zone 7.) When the 70s come spring is in full gear and once the 80s come and the humidity comes, the best time of the year is here .... SUMMER :)
Im looking forward to seeing enjoyable weather every day and winter (and the freezes it brings) becoming just a memory.

I feel yall's pain. Almost saw snow here along the Gulf Coast yesterday. I've used up my last bit of fire wood a couple of weeks ago, and now we have the heat pump going. I'm looking at a heavy frost on my car windows and my yard looks like one big haystack from all the dead naner leaves. Still, no signs of life yet, I think that frost does a number on the tropicals down here.
Just finished my 500 Ton capt. liscense testing 16 days ago and was told that I'd get my certificate in less that 2 weeks. The USCG has been closed for days due to snow in West Virginia. No telling when I'll get my liscense now. I gotta make one more trip on deck. I will be so glad to see some sunshine and warmer days. Thanks
Bo
I did see some snow flakes-- falling with the rain and melting on contact--at least 3 or 4! I think this winter has got to be one of the coldest in a while based on average temp. No all time records and not many daily records, but a lot of cold days. I am ready for some 70s, but I do not see any in sight on the 10 day forecast!

I hope it will warm up some time. It hasn't reached above freezing in almost a month. Both of my musa basjoos look like they've died from the rotting of the psuedo-stem and they might not come back so I'll probably need to get another one. They really don't do well and will not survive indoors.
Does anyone know if there's any chance that bananas can revive from the roots?

We actually had a pretty cold winter too... With so many cool storms, we couldn't (and still can't) warm up!!
December 2009 - only 6 days in 60s
Jan 2010 - only 7 days in the 60s
No 70s since November! Hopefully that will change Monday or Tuesday once these stupid clouds go away

A beautiful day for a Mardi Gras Parade
It was 35F today but we still mardi gras-ed it up! Apparently St. Louis has the second largest mardi gras celebration...second only to New Orleans! It was a good time...lots of people and a large area of town blocked off.

Its still winter here, but the past few days have been in the low to mid 40s which isnt too bad when its really sunny outside. This is also the time of the year when my indoor plants start to grow a little faster because the sun gets into the windows. My bananas are still stored away, but continue to grow. I cant wait to get them outside and only about 6 more weeks to go before many will be out for the summer.
Also rain is comming this week which is much better than snow, but after that day temps will be around 40 (many are 39), which is below average, but the days are longer and all the outdoor plants look like they are going to be blooming soon.
Good luck, I hope that spring will be here soon!

It's been great here too. I've had the heat off during the day for 3 days now! This winter has been so bad that we've been using wood heat lately to bring down the electric bill.

Hmmm....cardinals stay here year round. Wonder why there are so many down south. The 'first robin of spring' is usually a pretty good indicator that spring is here. Then again, I've seen a ton of them come up here, then it snowed for several more weeks and they looked miserable and starved. It's a little difficult to find bugs and worms on the ground when it'd covered by a foot of snow, huh? I felt bad for em.

Storms along advancing cold front dropped golfball sized hail on neighboring Martin county today. Big time wind gusts knocked down old big trees and a trampoline got picked up and wrapped around a powerline according to the 11PM news. I didn't see any of it here at home in PSL - prolly cause I'm 10 miles inland - just wind and rain. Very much needed rain.

I can verify that it got really nasty in Pahokee and Canal Point. The corn fields around my farm were flattened but only one of my trees got knocked down. Wind speeds were easily above 70mph.
I've got almost 1100 plants in pots at my house waiting for warmer weather so they can actually be planted. Normally, after Valentines you can plant without fear of frost, but now I am behind on my planting about 2 weeks and the only plants that are actually ready to be planted are some FHIA-17s and some Plantains. The only blessing this winter is that we have actually had regular rainfall.

So far, a fairly mild winter, much nicer than the last two, but in a mildly frustrating hold pattern, with typical rainfall amounts, but seems to be less frequent sunny days, and the fore-mentioned stalled temperatures.Lots of bulbs showing color and rhodos ready to go, but needing those higher temperatures to really show off! Yah, totally possible. Last year, down the road it registered 97F for Apr 21 and 97F on Apr 22. My place was showing 100. Rocklin is further away from the marine influence than Sacramento so we can get pretty hot here.
But it wasn't a big deal since we had 70s & 80s since early Jan 2009 and my plants were acclimated. I can tell you this though, I'm probably going to get screwed out of nice weather and straight to needing the A/C. I'm calling it now.

Today felt like spring by me, we were in the mid 60s! I brought out some of my hibiscus, but covered them with a frost cloth since tonight will be in the 30s. Also took out lots of other plants including my new ice cream banana, but I brought them in just in case. The entire forecast has days at the least in the 50s and no hard freezes. Pretty good for early march!

As for the colocasia. I purchaced a "root" from the grocery store. About 9 inches long and abotu 7 or 8 accross, but its shaped like a bick carrot. Its been planted just around 2 weeks indoors. How long does it take to grow?2 weeks? 3 weeks?

Here in Live Oak, Texas it's in the 60's to 70's in the day (first time hitting 70 this year today) and 40's to 50's at night. Soon it'll be in the 60's at night and the two Dwarf Cavendish nanas can go back outside.
Tomatoes are growing, squash, beans, cucumbers got planted yesterday and in 2 weeks, pumkins, peppers and more. I'll be planting different things through May.
The peaches and nectarines are leaving out, their pink flowers look incredible. The apples haven't woke up yet, and the pecan and paw paws are still "asleep."
My garden grows bigger every year when I just "have to plant" something new. Gives me a reason to dig, amend, etc. No complaints from friends, family and so forth at harvest time.

SBL - How well does the dryer exhaust work for keeping things warm? I thought of this too, but I thought id cook everything lol
It works pretty well, Temps are usually only in the mid to upper 80s when the dryer is on. You can always ventilate or open the door if needed. We saved our drying for late night on cold days. We put our chinese evergreens in ours and they are very sensitive to temps below 40. Ours is on the northeast side of the house so it only gets a little morning sun.

Spring fever feeling is over for me! :woohoonaner:We're not there yet but we're in that pre-spring, time frame where we suddenly have to shake off the lethargy and put it in gear to get everything ready. I've got tomato seeds starting under lights inside and hubby is out rotatilling. Weather is warming up, and this is the time when we sometimes don't move fast enough and end up planting late from having to let the ground dry out a little in between rains to rotatill etc.

so i just did a perimiter around the house. On the south wall, about a foot away from the foundation is thawed... Same with the south wall of my garage. Most of the snow is gone too. The weather has been warm, its official, the warmest winter in canada EVER. Also 60% less snowfall, and 30% more rain.
THe daytime temps are around april temps, and the night temps are mayish.... IF they hold up, in a week r 2 my fargesia should spring back to life, and I can start to dig up last years dead stuff, and start my compost heap.
Also, my pampas grass sprouted ( indoors) and so did my strawberries

What part of Canada?
We are way behind--trees that would normally bloom in mid Feb are just now starting to bloom. Two years ago my citrus trees bloomed in Feb--they are not even thinking of blooming yet.
My winter garden crop has really just started growing--they just sat there most of the winter (cabbage, broccoli, onions, turnips, spinach, lettuce).
I have had tomato seedlings in starter pots since Jan--they are still only an inch tall.
Our soil is sandy enough to plant now, but I have to wait to get the winter crop out.

Don't you just hate it when it warms up and you get that great spring feeling and then a cold front comes in and stays for a week or more.
We have had highs around 80 and lows near 60 for the last few days. The buds on the trees are starting to open and everything is starting to green up. I have a couple pups that pushed up a couple weeks ago and now every banana is pushing new growth.

Tomorrow - It's official!!!:bananarow:
(from WikiAnswers)
What is the first day of Spring 2010?
In: Seasons, Calendar
Saturday, March 20 - in the Northern Hemisphere
In the US and Canada:
Saturday, March 20, at approximately midnight is the official first day of spring for 2010 in the Northern Hemisphere (Vernal Equinox).
On that day, the Southern Hemisphere observes the Autumnal Equinox, which is the equivalent of the start of Autumn.
First day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere
In general, the four seasons correspond to the relative position of the sun to the earth. Meteorological determination of spring is calculated according to when the sun passes through the equatorial plane. When going from winter to spring, the sun is moving north; as soon as the sun crosses the equator, we call it spring. (This applies to places north of the equator.)
First day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere
The official date of spring south of the equator (corresponding to the first official day of fall in places north of the equator) would be around September 20/21, depending on when the sun crosses the equator.
Countries such as Australia and New Zealand, however, designate the first day of September as the official first day of spring.
Background information regarding the seasons:
Spring comes in between the 19th to the 23rd of March and at different times. It changes on a yearly basis because the first official day of spring is the (Spring) Vernal Equinox. This is when the sun is directly above the equator. It rises due East and sets due West and does not do so on the exact same day every year; this is because the calendar is not exactly 365 precise days every single year.
In 2009, spring arrived on March 20; the sun was above the equator, and crossed to the Northern Hemisphere at approximately 11:47 p.m.

With the gorgeous weather I've started the winter/spring cleanup. Removed the netting over the pond. Pruned all plants in the pond not done before the winter. Cut the ornamental grasses. Cut the hardy hibiscus dead sticks. Cut the basjoo down to the ground, as all was mush. This year I didn't mulch it, so we'll see what the mat does. Pulled the dead passiflora vines off the fences. Cleaned the pond skimmer and took as many leaves out off the pond bottom as I could. Still have the water change and vacuum to do in the pond. The fish look great, although I seem to have lost 3 out of 13 over the winter (one fantail goldfish and 2 koi). Actually not too bad considering the winter we had. Pruned my Hakuro Nishiki willows and Buddleias. And pruned all my roses. Now I'm exhausted and my knee is killing me. Ahh, spring!

It's been sunny and 70-75F here the past week, and spring is finally busting out all over! Definitely got it bad this year, especially after our terrible winter which saw 3 major blizzards, over 60" of snow (most of it came all at once)...etc..etc.
The only drawback is now were seeing just how much damage was done, especially to trees and landscape plants. It is truly amazing to see just how much damage there was from this winter.
Happy Spring everyone!

KJ, we had our boxwoods really splayed out. I hope tying them up will help, because they're over 30 years old. Lots of twigs and boughs down from the tulip poplars, but knock on wood the ornamentals all seem OK. Oh, and pine cones everywhere from my neighbors tree.

Gorgeous Bonsai Greg! :woohoonaner:
Here is one of my favorites! I didn't even know it had bloomed. It is a Texas Mountain Laurel - the beautiful blooms smell like grape bubble gum or KoolAid. I think they look a lot like orchid blossoms.

I thought I had spring fever before.. but now I have it bad.. maybe its the cast and the club foot (in a boot) or its knowing I could do all that I want to do, but at what cost to myself down the road... So I think I'll just take it easy and enjoy what I do have :^) (Oh my bananas will get in the ground that's a cake walk) lol

I have it badly!!! Everything seemed to want to die inside over the winter inside my house. I lost my schefflera, 2 zebrinas, 1 basjoo, 1 ensete maurelli and I think that's all. Such a killer I am :( On the bright side though, my 8 ft tall and 6 ft tall ensete maurellis did GREAT in my unheated shop, they continued to grow all winter and I was so pleased as this is the first time I dug them up for the winter and put in pots. They were in ground all summer and grew so much. So I guess I didn't kill everything :) We have had temps in the 90's already this week and it has been wonderful. Everything is outside now and enjoying the sunshine. Next week all days will be at least 80* and I am soo happy for spring to be here! :woohoonaner:

I haven't looked at this thread in awhile. Jananas I LOVE the fields of bluebonnets in your area!!! Thanks for posting the flower!
These next couple weeks are my worst spring fever time where I can so easily jump the gun in planting everything outside for the summer as we're still able to get cold nights. Trees are in bloom and the red bud is just about to explode all over the country side with purple. Yup... we have the air on inside.
I LOVE SUMMER!!

We had some warm weather last week, but today sucks. daffodils & tulips still only buds & trees are starting to bud. Peonies are 6" up.
40's today & we have severe storm watch going... maybe hail & high winds. Phooey

I know how you feel! I did my time (that's how it seemed) 30mi. south of the snow belt, just south of Cleveland, Oh. I never minded the severity of the winters, just the length of them.

Hey everyone, I have spring fever worse than ever. Last May I had finished planting
tomatos. I went to Lowes for a dozen more cages. I tripped over an empty pallet in
the garden dept, I shattered my elbow and wound up needing surgery. Needless to say
this totally blew my favorite time of the year. I bought a roto tiller since I can no longer dig. So I really look foward to the garden.

A die-hard gardener :^) nothing wrong with that!!
A lady that use to own my house had a man come plow her garden with a mule every year. He did this for a bottle of whiskey she would bury in her garden, eventually he found it, finished the garden tilling, then he would drink it on way home cussin' his mule. :^)

Hi, just had a thought. I may be a trooper but, not a good paratrooper.
I never seem to land on my feet. A few years ago my husband asked a friend
to dig up the yard. I couldn't wait. While he was at work I ripped out the grass with a garden claw and a shovel. I now have a beautiful raised bed.
Don't you know, I am a lefty and thats the elbow I broke. But, my problems
were last year. I can't wait to get all my veggies into the garden.

Yes, 92. I think God is a prankster. He's up there having a laugh at our
expense. Tomorrow will be in the 80's and friday back to the 60's.
BTW my first ensete sprout came up. It was thirteen days since planting.
For two days now I keep checking to see if any more are there. This came up
really fast so now I keep expecting the rest to keep up the pace.
