To my knowledge, there are 3 particular banana varieties I would one day want to have in my garden: California Gold, Carolina King and Texas Star. They are said to be the 3 hardiest varieties out there, so I think it will fruit for you in Georgia with proper care. Good luck!

I know farmers that are done planting in the first week of may in wisconsin.
What is a late frost in Georgia?
Mother's Day in the second Sunday in may I believe.. just thought it would be warmer, and Easter or mid april would be a safe bet?

Don't expect it to fruit for you in Athens, GA unless you plan on digging it up and bringing it inside when the weather turns cold. Sorry, but your growing season is like mine.... WAY TOO SHORT!!!!
I am sure you will enjoy your banana even if it is just for ornamental value. BTW, do you have a picture of it?
Best of luck from SE TN!!!

For several years late frost have been a threat to the peach industry. I have seen trees break dormacy and flower then get flowers knocked off as late as mid-late april. Since shes new i want to save her the worry. Never know what will happen this year with frosts.. The people in miami and key west are still scared i bet.

I know people definately don't want to worry about frost. I know last year it was 80F in march here. I drove 3 hours north to load up a truck and I was in a sweat shirt & shorts and it was snowing like crazy. I think most folks in Georgia & Alabama got some of that, maybe even N. Florida. I bet that sucked !

Some people claim the Carolina King is nothing more than a Dwarf Cavendish, and I have had no luck with Dwarf Cavendish in North Carolina, but was wondering does anyone know for sure if it is the same or is different.

Welcome lea. I leave my plants in the ground year round. Some years they do fine some years they are knocked to the ground but come back. I agree with the other members after last frost. This is a guess if its potted and growing good then it want hurt to wait and make sure you are safe. I am betting its safe here but I have been wrong. I dont know anything about this plant. Ty Ty is the only site that I have noticed us these names Carolina King and Texas Star. I know how a lot of members feel about them. We more than likely know these as something else. If anyone knows please advise. Good luck lea.

Like Jim stated previously the Carolina King is a DC.. and I'm almost certain the Texas star is a Dwarf Orinoco like the CG. (kinda like how many synonyms (alter ego's) does Glui Khai have..(its a bunch) lol) :^)

So there may not be such thing ? How sad some people can claim that they sale these and thats not what they are. I even saw pictures of them and they claim to be really a cold hardy banana there should be a law.

One problem is placing have no idea what they are selling. Dealer send them a list and they think wow that sounds neat lets get it. HD here in Wilmington had a 12ft Queen palm for $100.00 sitting bare root with the native palms here for sale. They did have a sign saying not cold hardy. NOW why the heck did they waste a awesome palm like that!! Cause they screwed up or didn't care and wanted to make money. I have wanted a CK just for the name since I live in NC haha. But not a fan of cavendish really, plus gave all mine away to my mom and a friend in a trade. Do all three of these plants look alike side by side? Would be neat if someone could post a pic on here like that. Mug shots!

Yeah me to but I am happy with my dwarf Orinocos and my gold fingers. still waiting to see how the pysang Ceylon is gonna do didn't winter well but is coming back just vary skinny. my DOs grew slowly all winter so I am hoping for some action this summer. they are about 6 ft tall now. My balbasina is about 8 ft now. just planed a gran nan that I rescued from slowes and it is growing like mad.

shocked you found a gran nan at lowes. Sucks when you live in a apartment and have a small balcony. Limites how many plants and there size with pots. But soon I hope we can get into a house, but as long as the plants are healthy thats all that matters. They can grow large when in the ground. Where in NC is your city?

I have no idea what a Carolina King banana is but it appears there are many members here that do. I'm not surprised. I'm a newbie too and this site's simply incredible! Welcome to the group. It's practically a general forum and you can certainly learn a lot about bananas and almost anything else!
