I went a little crazy on EBay this past summer and bought a few variegated bananas. One is a sword pup and is starting to grow in my greenhouse. I think this one is a A'e A'e, but I'm not sure.

Thanks, all! I'll definitely keep you updated on their progress. They all look pretty terrible right now. Some are kind of yellow, but I guess as long as they aren't rotting, I won't worry. It does get very hot in the greenhouse during the day, and I am underwatering them for fear of their rotting so that is why I think some of the outer leaves are a bit yellow. Most of them are showing some small signs of growth so that is encouraging.

Randy, all the clothes that I wear are stained and have holes in them! LOL! It was either new clothes or variegated bananas. It was no contest! LOL!

Thanks, Steven! You are my variegated plant hero and mentor! You have the most awesome collection of variegates that I've ever seen. I can't thank you enough for sending me your babies. I promise to take good care of them always. I am so glad that we connected over variegated bananas and became friends.:2745:

LOL, Randy! Did you say you had kids? That's probably why you have no variegated bananas! LOL! Thanks so much for the encouragement!

Thanks, Mush!

Looking good Clare!

My Ae Ae's are looking sad in the nursery... I am a little worried about them.

djmb74;
Keep your AeAe on the dry side during this cool winter and give them as much warmth and bright light as possible and then don't worry too much. If it gets cold again, protect them! They do not like the cold. The BIGGEST mistake is keeping them too wet because they WILL rot quicker than any other variety I know!
Best of luck!

ya I didn't water them at all before I put them in the nursery and they have only been lightly watered once since. Most of the leaves have yellowed though and they only have one some 2 green leaves left. I think tomorrow I may put them out in the sun for a week since its warmed up a lot...

Pups seem to be growing just fine though...

Thanks, everyone, for your nice comments.

Martin, varig8 gave me some super advice for keeping mine alive, and I haven't lost one yet. He recommended planting my new arrivals in half well-draining potting soil and half Perlite and cutting off all the leaves except the newest one, which you cut in half and then not watering until you see some sign of growth. He has even had success in planting in all Perlite.

I hope yours will be okay. I'm doing my best to ignore mine as they seem to do best without me fussing with them. I'd love to see a picture of yours if you have the time.

Hi Clare,

I'm also keeping my Ae Ae very, very dry and so far do not have any problems. It has a place at a window facing south-east and is getting morning sun (rarely available these days :-))
When I took it inside at the end of October growth slowed, but the last leaf just emerged a week ago and came very, very quick

But this morning the sun was shining and I took a photo:

Dont remind me to clean the windows :-)

Very nice, Clare, thanks for sharing. I hope mine rebound this spring...yours definitely look better right now though one of my Ae Ae is doing well in the greenhouse.

Thanks, Harvey. I would love to see your greenhouse one if you have the time to get a picture. What do you do with yours in the wintertime? I am thinking that I will put some of mine in pots and some in the ground so that I can protect some of them in the wintertime.

Here are some pictures that my friend took at the San Francisco's Conservatory of flowers a while ago:

Hi Clare,

I'll try to get a shot of my crowded greenhouse one. Too nasty outside right now. I left the big one in the ground and don't know if it will survive or not, but decided to just take my chances since I had a back-up.

I've seen the Ae Ae in the SF Conservatory twice. It did look better the second time but not as good as what it appears in that photo. I once wrote the curator to suggest it needed more light. Maybe they trimmed away some of the other plants...I hope.

Hi Harvey! No hurry on the pic. You are probably getting hit with the rain storm that we're experiencing here also. I would love to see a pic of the one outside too, and I am curious to know how it does through the winter in the ground.

That's so great about your having been to the SF Conservatory twice and about you writing to the curator. I just checked, and those pictures were actually taken in 2005 so maybe it doesn't look the same now.

I thought I would update some pictures since I had a minute today. Here is the small AeAe today. I also thought I would show off my new hot tub with some pots around it that I bought at Costco. I'm going to fill them all with bananas. The two bananas that are just sitting right now in the pots are a Dwarf Brazilian and Ice Cream that I bought from Green Thumb Nursery yesterday. The other two that are going to go in the pots, I have to dig up from somewhere. I wanted to put my variegated bananas in them, but most of them are just cut trunks right now, and I don't want to risk losing them to the cold this winter. Maybe later, I can switch them out.

I forgot to show you my new rug. It's really cool. It has banana plants with a flower and elephants on it.
