I know it takes a very long time to get fruit, but it's cool to have one growing just for appearance. It's pretty hot here in the long summer, so that works for dates, but not sure if they can survive the 40s temp here in the winter.

Thanks,

I have had this CIDP for 3 years now in a 45 gallon nursery pot. I goes into my unheated garage every winter and sees temps well below freezing with no damage. If I lived in a full zone warmer (8b), I would definitely be planting this baby out in the yard and think it would do fairly well... Some protection is the harshest winters, but not very often. Where you live should be great.

I need to find someone to take it off my hands and plant it outside!!!

I'll definitely plant it outside. Where do you go surfing?

Got the surf board from a good friend and just wanted to put it out by the pool for looks and nothing else... My daughter loves to get it out in the pool and try to simply stand on it!!!

Now if I can find one in Cleveland, TN, I know you shouldn't have any problem finding one where you are located!!! I bought mine at the end of summer for about $20 and it was a 15 gallon palm.

Here is one of THE best places I have dealt with in the past for palms, mail order. Not sure exactly where you are located, but hey, sure you can get one from here!!!

I figured out there you could find true date or medjools @ Lowe's or HD... I'd just search palms in cali :^) you should do fine if you roll thru half the list Good Luck

if your average low is 4o's go for it.. i have mostly pindos here thats the closest thing to "true date palms" i have. they are hardy. this year i had no spear pull/crown freeze and we had two solid weeks of freezing and below freezing. i still feel ice in the p- stems of my bananas

get a date palm.. if i were you i would get a nice sized one and get it established so you wont have to baby it as much. believe me i had to nurse a few crown rotted young palms

maybe i will get a good sized canary island date palm in the future?

check your local flea market or farmers market for palms. i dont know where u live but i can go to Atlanta farmers market and get just about any type of palm i want, and get a good deal. i dont think i have ever paid over $20.00 for any palm. also better to see what u are buying.

The "new" sport that's kinda popular now is to stand on a surfboard, use a long oar and paddle around. Looked fun, I've seen it in southern Cali and Hawaii beaches. Maybe your daughter can try that.

These are native palms here and 40F is nothing for them, well as long as we are talking about Phoenix Canariensis palms, wich are much more hardy than thrue Date palm Phoenix Dactylifera. Course U can go to Phoenix Theophrstii if U like smaller palms whan they are mature (in some 20 years :)).

I don't have palms in my yard, but they're the commonest boulevard trees in Ambato. The city grows and maintains some truly spectacular:
Canary Island Dates
Medjools
Pindos
and Quitos

I find myself wishing I lived in the sector that uses Medjools on the street, but alas, I'd have to marry a football player to afford the down-payment.

Since they're on public streets, when the dates ripe, who get them?

Here is a link to a thread from another forum, palm forum, that contains pics of CIDPs in zone 8 FL. Thought this might show better long term survivorability in zone 8....

Whoever is fast enough up the trees - usually the children of the neighbourhood.

I germinated a lot of C.A.D.P. seeds and they grew 1' tall and made it through the winter outside. Lost the lot when I went out of town and let them dry to a crisp in their little pots (cups).
I planted one from a member this year, and it grew very well, but turned brown after the artic blast.

We have grown a lot of the spiny monsters in the past fron seed that was local. The Christmas packs of dates from Israel have been pasturised and the seeds therefore will not grow. If you can find packs of unpasturised dates you can grow palms from them easily.

I was told by the gents @ PalmtreesofHouston that their "Silver Medjool Hybrids" can handle 8-9F for less than 24 hours... What you guys think about that?

Could be. The true Medjools here are hardy to about 2 C but then again we rarely see that.

Well 8-9F is -13 to -12C..... We might see those temps about every 30 years or so.. if that. I think its a lil stretchin' of the truth for the palms ability to survive that. I can see survival w/protection but not without. Medjools are suppose to be good to 18-19F.. Sylvesteris to 22F.. ? CIDP's 20F but they all get leaf burn in the low 20's...
