I noticed that one of my Ensete Ventricosum seedlings died back and then last week I noticed this little guy sticking out of the soil like a pup.
I don't know if it's a "pup" or if it chocked way down low and somehow is growing fronm the side of the corm. Has anyone seen this before on Ventricosum?

All the time. It's a pup - the main plant died, so the corm sent up another one.

I thought that Venticosum was a non pupping variety....or possibly I'm confused? Either way, Anything green and growing in Zone 5 January's is welcome! LOL.

Normally, all ensetes are considered non-pupping, but under certain conditions/stress, they occasionally will send up a pup to replace a damaged parent plant. That's my understanding, anyway (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I had an EV planted by the pool last year about 18" tall. Well the wind blow an air mattress that landed on top of the plant damaging it. The main plant recovered but also produced a pup.

its a survival technique in nature. Stressing plants can also induce blooming/fruiting.

Odd then that the v-notch technique for forcing Ensete Ventricosum Maurelli to pup isn't as successful on regular Ventricosums. :waving:
