I have been thinking (get up off the floor now) the past day or two that I'd rather see us have a new sub-forum where we have prayer requests, etc. well before we have something that is more controversial that would be more likely to offend folks. Even when people opt into something, different folks have different tolerance levels and some people will be apt to push things a bit too far. Give them a long leash and they hang themselves and make people mad in the process. Just my $.02

On that note, I'm especially praying for victims and aid workers in Haiti. A friend of a friend's father and mother just flew there a few days before the earthquake for him to do some volunteer doctoring. His services are especially needed now but he's elderly and has a heart problem that require kick-starting every so often.

All I said it would be nice to see some of the older post from a particular thread.. I didn't say it should have any additions.. and it should be viewable if you specifically search for it.
I think we have the "picture thing" down patt...
If you view a thread you see the sociability factors and get to know your your fellow subscribers. :^) I'm sure not everyone left...

Well, OMG, Ya know, they teach children in preschool that if you dont have anything nice to say, just dont say it. Obviously you 2 must have been absent that day, or never attended school. Are you 2 so bored, or so miserable with yourselves, that you just dont have the cranial capacity to think about what you say before you say it? You cant control yourselves and must have something negative and insulting to post about someone who has the thoughtfulness to post something here to try and lighten the mood and add some humor to brighten up this post? I ask you, who is behaving more like a five year old? It is so true about you, Patty, what Randy posted, why don't you just suck down some more alcohol, (or whatever; "Got a lite?" ) and pickle your brain into oblivion by yourself and not drag the rest of the world along with you? And you, Dave, misery truly does love company. Poke your stick in and stir it up a little more. How pathetic. Instead why not ask yourselves, "Today, what I am going to do and say to make this a better world?" And if you find this impossible, why not just keep to yourselves? Im sure the majority of members here find this immature behavior as appalling as I do, especially since I have received so many private messages saying so. Bad, bad little members. You should be ashamed and embarrassed and both of you need to go sit in the corner without dinner (or drinks), until you know how to behave in public.

Have you looked in the mirror today? Psychiatrists call it "projection". Semantics? Come on, dude. It is all about the INTENT behind the words. What Patty posted was unnecessary and immature. And you had to stick up for it? Yes, it pissed me off, and I should know better than to try to reason with unreasonable people. Can't be done. varig8, I didn't say nasty things about you or Clare. Just my opinion of the vid. That video showed animals eating bananas & most of us don't want animals to eat our bananas. Seems you & Clare have said more nastys than anyone. You are doing the accusations & name calling.
I was trying to put a email of the cutest animal pics here (of small animals) that EVERYONE would love, but I have to figure out how to.
It was just my opinion that it was a vid for little children, and the animals are eating nanas.... what some of us are having a problem with. After all, this thread is because of the 'Deer hunter' thread. I think it got blown out of proportion.
Randy said I need to be asked to give my opinion and next sentence said, he has the right to voice his, and he did.

How bout we hijack this thread:-)

What is the most unusual "EDIBLE" banana that you have come across?

For me it is Fei...

http://www.bananas.org/f2/musa-aiuri-fei-banana-7965.html

http://www.bananas.org/f2/fei-bananas-manoa-valley-4382.html

It seems reasonable that these bananas would grow in the "Continental" U.S. However; I have never seen mature (or any other for 20 years) Fei in the Continental U.S.

I have some additional pictures from Moorea that I will post soon!

Anyone else have experience with Fei or other unusual "Edible" Bananas?

LOL "I've been pretty beat up here w/ name calling & accusations (not you to me or you to me)."
Thats seems to be correct; which infers it was more correct "me to you and me to you". Freudian slip?

And Patty, I didnt mis-spell anything. AND, it wasnt a "nasty" message I sent you. I copied and pasted that message and also did NOT copy and paste who sent it to me. Trust, there are more than 2 members who sent me pvt msgs. and reading the content would have embarrassed you, not them. I would never post a private message sent to me with the senders name attached to anyone else. BTW YOU spelled bizarre wrong. And since you are being Miss Grammar, you also spelled 'Ly' wrong in your earlier post about ' letting sleeping dogs lye'. Lye is a chemical cleaner they used in the past as soap. So what we are left with is this; some members agree with you, and some agree with me. Its great to agree to dis-agree. But from now on, let's try to stop and think before we post insulting jabs at other members and have a little respect and to do it in a mature fashion. Also you might want to take a look at the Nom Nom video again and when it pops up, hit the 'next' or 'previous' buttons and you will see that the site that it is posted on is for people of all ages with some very interesting, educational, sometimes comical, adult content. Yes it does pretty well with action shots providing there is adequate light. My Nikon D90 takes much better action shots though.

This action shot was also captured with the Sony F-828. They can be found used on ebay and craigslist for less that half the original price, but when they break they cost more to fix than it would cost to buy another used one. This is due to the fixed lens. Oh and it records video too which is very handy.

You may want to look at the Sony F717 which was replaced by the F828. The lenses on both of these cameras are far better than the current point and shoot cameras on the market. I owned the F828 a long time ago.

The problem with DSLRs (such as the D90) is the fact that you'll need to pick up an expensive lens to get great action shots. Telephoto lenses that allow for a larger opening for light to pass cost a lot.

Here is a photo I took with the D70s + 50mm F1.4 lens for a high school project(of course you'll need a longer lens to make it practical - I was really close):

There are so many things I want to ask and maybe email is appropriate because some people might think my questions are boring or can I I just ask here and perhaps if one complains I'd just shut up?
My 1st question for Mitchel is did you buy your Sony new? If used what is the average price on Ebay? I bid twice and my bids were outbidded right away.

momoese
01-17-2010, 11:31 PM
Yes I bought my F-828 new. It was a little over $1000. I have seen them sell for $400 or less on ebay.

John the difference I notice between the 717 or 828 and a DSLR like mine is that the 828 was pretty worthless shooting at anything over 100 ISO. They produce very noisy images at higher ISO's and also have issues with chromatic aberration. I can shoot in low light with the D90 and crank up the ISO to 2500 and still don't get much digital noise.

Benny you can email me or pm if you like, or I can just talk to you here providing this thread continues.

The other thing I'll put in is a bump for Nikon's sensors, in both their point-n-shoot and DSLR models - there's less weirdness with chromatic aberration and noise even at very high ISOs than with Canon or Sony's sensors.

Plus I like Nikon's approach to glass.

Benny, here is an example of a relatively low light action shot taken with the D90. This location is a horse showing building that is covered but has open sides. It's about the size of a football field under the roof. For this picture I used my 75-300mm 4.5 - 5.6 Nikkor lens. Even wide open (max aperture) it's not a very fast lens (but cheap used) so I had to use 2500 ISO to get enough light on the sensor while using a 1/800 shutter speed to stop the action. This camera has a max ISO of 3200. The focal length was 250mm and the aperture was 5.6 but adjusted to 5.0 by using some exposure compensation.

Now if I had used the Sony I would not have been able to optically zoom that close to the action which would have resulted in a larger crop to get the same image meaning even more noise, especially seeing how I would have had to shoot on a higher ISO then what that camera's sensor can really handle. If I had my new Mac I would run this picture through Neat Image and remove the noise it has making an even nicer picture!

As for buying a Nikon, there are less expensive models that will get you similar image quality, just not as many frames per second. Also in buying a cheaper body you have more money to spend on nicer glass! You might even want to look into a used DSLR.

And that was actually taken with the Sony 828, but I was very close and the light was perfect! Also she was jumping from a stand still so there wasn't much forward speed to deal with. All these factors made for a very odd looking picture!

But yes, I love it too! :)

Mitchel:
Wow! And Wow some more of the clearest pictures of yours. But ........ When you explained how you took them
I don't know anything about ISO's or using lens of different types.
What is the best way for me to learn all about taking pictures. I am so naive.
I set my mind getting the Sonny 828 on Ebay and I have 2 bids going on. But there is a waiting period to win. I've been outbidded 4 times already but I will not give up until I get one.
A friend of mine has a Nikon D300 and he owns all kinds of gadgets with it. He is a dentist but he is trying to be a photographer as a hobby. Before my son left for college he invited us to have a family portrait in his house. He even have a little studio made for taking pictures. When we got the pictures, we were so satisfied with the results until now...... when I saw the pictures of your dogs. They are stunningly clear and alive. You must be a professional photographer.

Thanks Benny! I do some post process work in Photoshop to most of my photos in order to crop, size, adjust colors, contrast, brightness, shadows etc until I like the look of them. The best way for you to learn would be a photography class or just reading some online tutorials and then do some experimenting with your camera. A lot of independent camera stores offer photogaphy classes for a small fee.

The problem with DSLRs (such as the D90) is the fact that you'll need to pick up an expensive lens to get great action shots. Telephoto lenses that allow for a larger opening for light to pass cost a lot.

Here is a photo I took with the D70s + 50mm F1.4 lens for a high school project(of course you'll need a longer lens to make it practical - I was really close):
http://djcraigandco.com/pbawellness/BasketBall.jpg

Thanks for your post John. This makes me more wanting to buy the F828 plus the cost of the D90 is so high compared to the F828.

I just bought a Sony F828 owner's asking price when I lost on many bids on this similar item. There was one Sony F828 camera I kept on bidding higher and hiigher up to the last second but I don't know how the other guy won it when I kept on raising my bid upto the last second. And also I think it was a rigged bid. If I don't bid the price stays the same for hours but when I bid, it immediately raised the bid $2.50 so I got outbidded all the time. This happenned at least 7 times.
So I was so frustrated I went back to the one I was eyeing before which has a fixed offer asking price. There was not much difference in price and I like the price So I bought it.

If he bid higher than the current bid, say he bid 100 dollars when the current bid was 50, then each time you bid 60,70,80 ect. you would automaticly be outbidded. I always calculate the exact ending time and never bid before then. That stops the bidding war and lowers the price..

It comes with a build in flash.
Here's a description:

Sony DSC-F828 Cyber-Shot 4 color Super HAD CCD Non interchangable lens Digital SLR With the Awsome Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar "T star" Super fast F:2.2 7.1- 51mm (Equiv. 28-200 ) Lens. I have made photography for more than 30 years. This is the best camera I everhad.

Pros : The most flexible, versatile and complete in all ways. Lens goes from full wide angle (28mm) to real good telephoto (200mm), wich really lets you choose the proper "cadrage". Offers real flexibility to compensate for backlit subjects without compromising on the overall scene. With 8 megapixels, you can use only 1/10th of the picture and enlarge it to a still very good 8x10 picture. The four color capture device brings vivid colours in "real color" mode. The three intensity mode flash gives very goof flexibility for night picture and works great to compensate for high contrast lightning conditions, as in a very sunny day when taking picture of peoples.

Cons: one needs to invest a couple of hours to learn how to use all the options. Then one needs to take A LOT of picture in all possible lightning conditons in order to master this beast!

Some controls, like the "red eyes reduction", are misplaced and to long to reach. Should have been placed in the "instant menu" instead of the setup menu.

I you ever plan to buy the new 10 gigapixels DSCR1 model, consider first bying the F828. Unfortunately, the DSCR1 is NOT as flexible and complete than the F828 :( No more video capacity, lens from 24mm to a much too short 120mm, and with that model Sony came back to a 3 colour CCD (capture device), while the 4 colour CCD is so wonderfull! What a loss... and who needs 10.3 megapixels anyway??? Do you really plan to make 4'x6' posters of your pictures ?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that F828 !!!!!!!!

I use my onboard flash fairly frequently with satisfactory results. It works great in situations when I'm not expecting to take enough flash shots to justify lugging along another piece of gear. My speedlight definitely gives better results, though. However, I rarely find situations where I can bounce it off of the ceiling (either they are too high or not white) so I use a diffuser (have two types).

I'm surprised that this particular thread has been derailed to such an extent. While I think it's okay to go off-topic on most threads, this thread was established for a rather serious purpose. I wonder what kind of discussions might take place at my funeral some day (a long time from now, hopefully).

I agree Harvey that this thread was for serious discussion but that all went out the window when people started bickering about nothing more than who could get the last word, and the thread for some reason wasn't deleted. I think it's better to derail it using pictures of puppies and talk of photography or whatever else then let it continue to drive a deeper divide in the membership. I believe if Jarred has a problem with us doing this he'll either delete the thread, relocate the photo info to a new thread, or just tell us to shut up. :ha:

So back on point. Here is a pic taken in my house at night time in a room that's painted a mustard color using the 828 and the HVL-1000 flash with the flash tilted upwards, diffuser cover closed, and bounced off the ceiling. You can't get natural looking results like this using the pop up flash. I had a lot of time to experiment with this camera and the ext flash was the best option I found when extra light was needed. The sensor in this Sony 828 is nothing like our DSLR's, you can't just bump up the ISO and expect great results. This camera and this flash made me very happy for quite a few years! :)

Here's our Golden Retriever, Becky, back in February 2006 shortly before she died from pancreatic cancer. Our cat, Sabrina, would often make "biscuits" on her back and nap there. We miss Becky a great deal and our Yellow Lab "Yella" sends Sabrina flying anytime she gets settled up with her.

This was taken with my ol' 20D with it's onboard flash, one of those times when I simply didn't have the time to get my speedlight out. Not to compare against what Mitchel says about the 828, though.

Yes, we still have Yella (just turned 4) and Belle. We have Sabrina (the old lady) too; she's about 15-16 but still gets along great. She is quite good at hunting mice though Belle is probably faster and catches more birds.

Yella's tags are a county license tag and an ID tag.

perfectly. Ante
But the one that I back out on is not the same seller I bought the camera from. So there is no refund in the making. I was only bidding only at the time there was no money involve yet. There has to be a Acceptance from the buyer and payment from the buyer before money is involved. Like the camera I bought. Before the seller will send me the camera I have to pay for it in advance. Until he receives the check and cleared by the bank only will the seller will mail the merchandise bought.

Benny, we've chatted about eBay auctions before (with Joe Real also) and Joe tried to explain the way proxy bids work on eBay. The auctions are not rigged except in some very rare situations which are cause for banning by eBay.

There are lots of reasons why a seller will offer an item to another bidder. Sometimes the winning bidder has negative feedback or is in another country which the seller has already conditioned his auction against. Sometimes a bidder just has cold feet and backs out. I've retracted a bid once or twice myself for various reasons (at least once because a description was vague and I later found out the item wasn't what I really wanted).

All about bidding (http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/aboutbidding.html)

I tried to retract one of my bids last week by writing privately to the seller but the seller refused to budge from my reasoning and warned me against penalty if I don't go through the transaction but some other sucker outbidded me to it and so I was able to breathe easier.
Anyway, I don't think I will be a pro. For my plan is to buy less than 5 items on Ebay vs 100 or more. lol.
I also noticed that ebay reminds you of your items bought in the past. Mine's last list was listed way back on 2007. And the sellers rating for being a good boy like paying promptly. I have a 100% good boy rating as the sellers say.

I felt like an eBay addict at one time and have probably bought 400-600 items on eBay. I once told a friend back around the year 2000 or so about eBay and he has since bought thousands of things so I don't feel too bad, lol.

You can retract your bid without writing the seller and they can't do anything about it. But it should really be (in most cases) if you've entered the wrong bid amount which is difficult to prove you wrong. Everyone has a brain spasm occasionally! You've only got certain time periods to do it, though, and will get dinged if you do it very often. Retracting or canceling your bid (http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-retract.html)

The winning bidder is most likely a scammer. Everytime I sell camera equipment on Ebay, I end up with a scammer winning.

When I sold one of my Nikon lenses on there, the winning bidder was from the UK (I allowed shipping only to the US, Canada, and the UK). So I got a paypal payment from China and email message saying "please ship item to this address: (China Address)". I replied and told him that I don't ship to China as stated in the auction.

He replies and says that he bought it for a friend in China - and said that the payment came from his friend. Too bad his payment email from China and his UK ebay email address were the same. I had to cancel the auction and relist it.

FYI, if you run into this situation, never sell it! They will send you the money, receive your lens, and then cancel the payment. Therefore, you'll end up with no item, Paypal fees, Ebay Fees, and no money.

I almost always snipe on eBay also unless it's a Buy It Now auction or something very cheap not worth worrying about. There are different free services to do this for you. I once bought 3 old postcards of my church and another local resident had been bidding against me. She couldn't believe how I outbid her on 3 of them within a second of one another! :ha:

FYI, if you run into this situation, never sell it! They will send you the money, receive your lens, and then cancel the payment. Therefore, you'll end up with no item, Paypal fees, Ebay Fees, and no money.

I dunno.....someone had great luck selling a PPPppppowerbook laptop to the UK:

Hey, Dave, I posted that earlier....the post immediately prior to yours. You aren't trying to scam me out of getting credit for posting it, are you??? In any event, no offense taken! :ha:

Retracting or canceling your bid
In this article
Under what conditions can I retract a bid?
How long do I have to retract a bid?
What if I can’t retract a bid?
The fine print

As a general rule, you can’t retract or cancel a bid. Once you place a bid, you agree to pay for the item if you’re the winning bidder. However, honest mistakes sometimes occur. Review the conditions and time restrictions and if you feel you have a valid reason for retracting a bid, fill out a Bid Retraction form. To retract a best offer, use the Best Offer Cancellation form.

Under what conditions can I retract a bid?
Whether you can retract a bid depends on the circumstances and timing of the bid. You can retract a bid for the following reasons:

You accidentally entered the wrong bid amount due to a typographical error. For instance, you bid $99.50 instead of $9.95. If this occurs, you must reenter the correct bid amount immediately after you retract your bid. Changing your mind is not a typographical error.

The item’s description changed significantly after you entered your last bid. For instance, the seller updated details about the item’s features or condition.

You can’t reach the seller by telephone or email.

How long do I have to retract a bid?
If you meet any of the above conditions, consult the following table to determine if you meet the time restrictions for retracting the bid.

Time restrictions for retracting a bid
Auction ending time
Retraction allowed?
Result

Auction ends in more than 12 hours
Yes

When you retract the bid, we remove all bids you placed on the item. If you are correcting a bidding error, you must bid again.

Auction ends in less than 12 hours
Yes, but only if you retract the bid within one hour of placing it
When you retract the bid, we remove only your most recent bid. Bids you placed prior to the last 12 hours of the listing are not removed.

What if I can’t retract a bid?
If you can’t retract a bid, you can contact the seller to request that your bid be canceled. The decision to cancel a bid is up to the seller.

The fine print
Please remember that every bid is binding, unless the item is listed in a category covered by the Non-Binding Bid policy or the sale is prohibited by law or by our User Agreement. Bidding on multiple identical items should be done only if you intend to buy all of the items.

Your bids affect how other users bid for an item and the item’s final selling price. We carefully investigate all bid retractions to determine whether they are appropriate and conform to the rules for buyers. Abuse of bid retractions can result in the suspension of your account. In addition, your total number of bid retractions in the past 12 months is displayed in your Feedback Profile.

Bids retracted within the last 24 hours of a listing can be viewed as an example of shill bidding, which is a serious violation of eBay policy.

You cannot retract a purchase made through a Buy It Now listing. Once you confirm your purchase, you are obligated to pay the seller.

Thanks Harvey.

I have an eye now on Sony HVL-F32X on sale on ebay. I will wait on the last minute to bid what I thought that I can get it for the price. Now is this flash needs a cable to attach it to the F828?

I don't think that one uses a cable like mine did as it's a dedicated hot shoe flash. The one thing people seem to dislike about it is how fast it uses batteries, but I have rechargeable AA batteries so it wasn't really an issue for me.

That is not an issue for me. I always reserve many 2 AA batteries in my closet.
My issue is I keep forgetting them to take it with me whenever I bring my camera . lol.

I think when someone can invent a car to use water as fuel. You know Hydrogen is explosive. If someone can separate hydrogen from the oxygen and use hydrogen as fuel.:goteam:

Was award-winning wolf wild or a model? [/B]

Wildlife photographer stripped of prize for shot of leaping critter

LONDON - Organizers of a wildlife photography competition have disqualified the winning image of a leaping wolf after an investigation determined the animal was trained, not wild.

Judges for the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition had praised Spanish photographer Jose Luis Rodriguez's image featuring an Iberian wolf for its "fairy tale" quality but later became suspicious about its authenticity.

Competition spokeswoman Louise Emerson said Wednesday that judges had investigated and decided that the wolf is probably "an animal model that can be hired for photographic The competition's rules said the use of captive animals must be declared. Rodriguez was stripped of the award.

Emerson says Rodriguez denies using a model wolf.

Spanish photographer Jose Luis Rodriguez says his photo shows a wild Iberian wolf. But organizers of a wildlife photography competition in which the image was entered say the animal was trained

I got my Sony f828 yesterday. Looks very nice. I am now looking at the instruction manual. But the flash I was about to bid on ended without me bidding. I was 1 hour too late when I opened my computer.Too bad. I was going to bid $5 higher of the highest bidder.

I was looking at your old post regarding your D90 camera you got for Christmas. I am impressed with the clarity of that electric pole. I would like to post that pic here. And also the settings of your camera when you took the pictures of your dog?
I am saving all your settings with your camera so I may try to use the same settings when I learn how to use mine.
I also want to know your camera setting when you took the picture of your dog running.
Thanks. I need all the help I can get.

I can got through and check to see the settings when I get a chance but I can tell you that having those settings won't do you any good. You should start with the Sunny 16 rule and go from there, or read some of the photography sites for tips on exposure. It really comes down to the available light, distance of the subject, is the subject moving or not, front or back lit, DOF (depth of field) preferred for the look you want, type of contrast or shadows you want. Also on this camera I'm playing with bracketing the exposures. I took some pics of LA today and am going back for more tomorrow morning and also for the sunset so I'll share those when I have time.
