Today is the shortest day of the year (or maybe its tomorrow) in the northern hemosphire. So even though its cold as#### outside the days will be getting longer and we are getting closer to spring.

You know what they say: (I think this came from the dumb jokes thread) Heat makes things expand; that's why days are longer in summer.

Just as important, soon and very soon the sun will be higher in the sky and my neighbors house (and a couple of weeks later, mine) will not be casting shadows on my GH at 4 pm!

Except braincells :ha:
We could really use some spring temperatures here. All i can see are snow covered protections of Musa basjoos and a hole lot of Musas in every part of the house that are NOT very happy with the indoor conditions.

Hey John, How much snow did you get in NY? No snow in st louis yet, we are just supposed to get rain this week with temps in the 40s (they are predicting a blizzard in the northern midwest). I tend to check the temp in my greenhouse quite often. I have a wireless therm so I can check it in the kitchen, much better than going outside all the time to check the temp.
Same problem here, my greenhouse loses the sun around 4pm. It will be nice to have the sun higher in the sky. I a month or so we will start noticing the days getting longer.

You did not receive any snow Jwm? We got light snow two days ago that is still covering grass and what not.

The official tally was 11.4 inches, but that's in Central Park, about 20 miles from here. I didn't measure it, but I'd say we got about 15 inches.

Just a dusting of snow in St Peters and its all gone now. Where do you live in St Louis? I was in the city by forest park yesterday and no snow at all on the ground there.

I seem to notice the change in daylight around the end of January and I feel it that summer is racing toward me.

Yeah, I'm ready for spring to come...then again, I was ready in October :ha: !! And as for St. Louis snow...WEAK! I hate snow, but it saddens me that St. Louis like never gets snow. I'm back in Iowa on break right now and saw it snow more EACH DAY than how much it has snowed in St. Louis TOTAL this whole winter. It's weird...I absolutely hate winter/snow/cold, but when I live in a place that doesn't have a harsh winter, I miss it. Guess I'm a true zone 5er at heart! LOL.

Stonehenge is just down the road from me, but anyone going down there to see the sun up over the stones this morning would need to be keen, as the wind was biting in from the East at -2C, no chance of seeing the sunset as the snow clouds rolled in, just a dusting (100mm) but enough to cause complete chaos all over Southern England. Still tomorrows meeting is cancelled so no more work till January. :woohoonaner:

That only means 2 more years until the end of civilization! Thank you Mayan calender.
I can't wait until spring arrives. 23 inches of snow in one night really sucks.
