First, let me explain a bit - I don't own a nursery, don't have a huge piece of property, have a full time job publishing a weekly news paper for the communities is central Hamilton County, OH. But I love growing plants. It makes winter go quicker and gives me something to do besides watch TV.

Now, I thought of Valentine's Day. I know - guys are going to buy rings, jewelry, roses, dinner - whatever - for the love of their life. But what about the females - guys care about power tools, muscle cars, expensive electronic equipment and beer. But also growing plants.

My goal is to convince all the female readers the best present they can give their husband on Valentine's Day is a tomato plant. I even have a spiel to help:

Red is the color of love - tomatoes are red.
You want your love to grow - tomato plants grow!
Tomatoes are not fattening like candy.
Instead of putting Easter Eggs in the Easter Basket, you can put ripe tomatoes.

I have determinate, self-pollinating maters that do not require the amount of sunshine normally associated with the fruit.

Of course, I could be nuts or under some drug, as I did find a small arrow in my back with some name - couldn't read it completely, but it started with a C, had a P in the middle and what looked like a D at the end, with the message that this is what I should do!

Exactly what I wanted for Valentine's Day. An Easter basket full of tomatoes. I don't know Wiz I think I gotta stick with that muscle car or the beer.

Michael,

Your significant other could buy you beer, and spend $10 for a 12-pack or buy a tomato plant and get you a six pack, then have money left over!

True, she could buy like 20,000 plants for the price of a muscle car, but if she forgoes an option, she could get you the car and the plant!

It's all in the marketing!

I love the aroma of a tomato plant, the freshly picked tomatoes with their vine attached smell so nice :)

Ok you convinced me. I'll take the 20,000 tomato plants. Actually my tomatoes didn't do well last year. Any suggestions? I tried the Japan tomato ring but they didn;t really take off till the season was over.

Patty,

Don't know about ripe tomatoes but if he likes to grow plants like you do, maybe....

Use your wildest imagination!

LOL....well you see, men show their appreciation for the women they love on Feb. 14 for Valentines Day. And a month later, men have their OWN related holiday on MARCH 14th where women show appreciation for the men they love. Some of you may know what I'm referring to here...Steak and a BJ Day (http://www.steakandbjday.com/)!!! This is kinda new, but has been around for quite a few years now...and sorry, I'm gonna have to take preference here over tomatoes LOL :ha: But if not, tomatoes would be nice too!
