View Full Version : Major Winter Snow Storm For Mid Atlantic Seaboard

Two weeks ago we had our first "snow" here in the DC area. Areas below the fall line on the coastal / tidal plain along the tidal Potomac got .5 of an inch, while just a mile to the west got 2" and 5 miles north and west of the Washington D.C. area got 3-5". This coming storm should be dramatically different from that one for sure.

Were under the gun here in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. The winter storm watches were up yesterday, they have been changed to winter storm warnings this morning. The forecast is calling for snow starting tonight, late, and 1-3" by daybreak Saturday, then accumulating an additional 8-12" Saturday with winds gusting 25-35 MPH. The storm should move out and the snow taper off to snow showers early Sunday morning. Total storm accumulation totals in the DC area should be 10-15+ inches of snow by the time its all said and done. This could be the biggest snow for many in the mid Atlantic in YEARS. This could ALSO mean that we wont have a dream of a white Christmas here, were probably going to actually get it, especially with the temps not predicted to go above 35-37F during the day, and Sunday/Monday temps should stay well below freezing during the daytime hours as well, with lows in the mid teens to low 20s.

I hate winter, and I hate cold, with ONE exception. When it actually, on the pretty rare occasion it does snow here. :woohoonaner:

Ive wrapped both my outdoor potted Trachys in minilights, and wrapped that in plastic, and man is it ever TOASTY WARM in there. Just based on a feel with my hand its roughly somewhere in the 70's-80s+ inside the plastic. I have left the crowns uncovered, and there is a hole in the top of the plastic wrap, but with the warm air coming out thru the holes I highly doubt the crowns will freeze at all.

Who else is under the gun here?

I STILL haven't mulched or wrapped my trachys or needles or basjoos. So far the palms look fine, and the snow should be a good insulation. Of course my basjoos are fried, but I'm sure they'll be fine and pop up in the spring. Good luck all.

I'm leaving all of my plants unprotected. It will be interested to see how much damage the snow to rain to snow will do here on the coast.

Boy do I love snow...... yeah right, a soon as its done I go to work :0519: to plow and shovel. I havent wrappped my trachys or Rhapidophyllums yet either but I think now's the time before it gets lower than the 20's at night and the snow cover is more permanent.. Guess I know what i'll be doing in a few hours:ha:

I covered my palms because of the 16F we saw yesterday morning, but I decided I mine as well keep the cover on with this snow. Probably 7-10 inches here, not record breaking, but certainly very very rare.

i do have a pindo palm in the ground, but I also have one in a pot which is still outside, no damage at 16 and it will also be seeing its first snowstorm because I will not be protecting it.

Living in NY for 40 years I got used to cold winters with lots of snow. Here this is unusual. They're now saying more than another foot is possible before it ends tonight. They also are saying we'll get a Christmas snowfall. I have family in Madison; this is more up their alley.

Update: Sleet covering cars and a winter weather advisory was issued. Forecast says an inch of wet snow should accumulate overnight.

We'll see...

To all the rest of you lucky (or unlucky) ones with all the snow: :pics:

Well, "Officially" at National Airport here in DC they measured 16.4". I dunno why they use that stupid airport as the "official" for the area, because just about everywhere else got 20+ inches. We live about 1 mile south of the airport on the Potomac, and I measured 26" on the grass in 3 different places. They must take the measurements on some sort of "ground" thats heated and doesnt start accumulating until theres already been 3-5" of snow fallen everywhere else.

Trachy's should be fine! Pots never even came close to freezing, though the leaves did get bent down and almost totally covered, but they bounced right back up when I cleaned them off last night. Ill try and get some pics up soon. I got about 200 I took that I have to go thru! WOW!

What is that big perfect round white ball top of the last pic? Is it a round mountain or a big snowball coming at ya?

On the left is a bunch of snow stuck to the window...more along the stop

And the small one with about 2 feet of accumulation late last nite, AFTER I had cleaned it off several times. Looking down on it. The hole is where the snow did not accumulate from the heat coming out of the wrapped palm.

The large windmill after 2 feet of snow just finished falling. This one had not been cleaned off the entire time:
