It has been about -20 F here on several recent mornings, so of course my thoughts turn to growing bananas. I'm not currently growing any bananas, but intend to start this spring. The only experience I have is growing a Gran Nain (I think) in my bedroom as a kid. I kept it going until the third winter when the leaves jammed and started rotting into the pseudostem. I'm sure I could have cut it back and let it regrow. Instead I discarded it because I figured it would never be very happy and because I needed the space. If I'd had internet access to research growing bananas where only crazy people attempt such things, I might have done things differently. Years after seeing the underground part of that plant, I started to wonder why they couldn't be grown like cannas, lifting and storing in the fall. Now that I've finally started to look into the subject and found this forum, I see that they can. Bringing the pseudostem through winter in cool dark storage never occured to me. That information makes growing bananas seem almost reasonable. Now I just need to get advice on cultivars and specific cultural techniques, but I guess that topic belongs in the general or cold hardy forum. I'll start a thread with my plans and questions when I get a chance.

I actually learn something from you by reading "Bringing the pseudostem through winter in cool dark storage never occured to me. That information makes growing bananas seem almost reasonable." I've tried that with Caladium once last winter and it worked. Nice to know it work for Bananas.
