Hey guys,

after a long period of non-activity on this fantastic forum, i can only be sad to see some of my loverly musa's and other plants dying (not because of frost) but due to i assume:

too much (rot)/too little water, too little light inside, lack of nutritions. I'm still learning a lot about how to treat best those little sweethearts.

Is it hard to maintain musa's during winter inside in Europe or is it just me not being educated enough with musa's?

Please share your opinions in this topic.

Condolences send to my:

ensete glaucum ( small seedling, the only one from 50 seeds ) RIP
Too much water: leafs were getting dry and very thin, then i checked the base too encounter rot)

musa basjo red big plant ( changed his name too : musa basjoo rot ) RIP
I think the pot was too big, thus maintaining too much water inside

musa sik darjeeling ( only specimen i germinated myself from 20 seeds) RIP

musa acuminata sumatrana small plant ( rotted but is showing a new sprout)
Problem was that this nanner was cutted from a motherplant, and i think this wound made it vulnerable for rotting tissue in combination with lack of growth

I really feel bad loosing all my little plants after doing much trouble collecting them.

I'm doing everything now to maintain the rest of my sweethearts.

Ooh my failure make me feel like :nanadrink: An opinion from my respected nana-collegues would make me feel better.

We learn while we live and we learn every day, sometimes more, sometimes less, sometime on bad ,sometime on better way. But if You can learn on own faults it is the best way to learn.
We are all learning how to grow plants here right? So, chin up and straigh forward!:nanadrink:

Also in Greece, the death toll has been high.
But I must admit, that I had all bananas outside in pots, covered only for a few days when it got really cold.
I think most of them died, or seem to be dead because of rot. I'll leave them without pstem for a few more weeks and hope to see new growth. But they were quite little when I purchased them in autumn.
So far the list of dead ones:
- Dwarf Cavendish
- Dwarf Red
- Gran Nain
- Kru
- Praying Hands

All the others showed quite good activity the last days. Basjoo, Ice Cream, Rajapuri and Itinerans gigantea have developed a new leave and more are coming. My Ae Ae (which i had indoors) is also pushing a new leave and it'll unfold maybe tomorrow.
Good Luck to everybody, now that spring is here or very close!

To continue the horror story, locally we saw -12c worst case.
I lost the multi stem basjoo outside and so far no signs of it returning.

also lost to rot M.Yunnan, m.Sikki, e.Maurelli, e.Perrieri, m.lasciocarpa all stored in an uheated garage. Also lost Siam Ruby stored indoors the stem just snapped off at the base.

some of my nanners also had this problem at the base. It was soft like pudding and i could remove the pstem without cutting it.

I lost E. Maurelii and E. Superbum :( The main plants on my SDC and Siam Ruby also kicked the bucket, but they still have their pups going strong.

After reading the above sad reports, and I give my condolences to all, I have to comment on Siam Ruby. This is the 3rd winter that I have lost my mother plant (kept indoors) but not the pups. Strangely, the mother plant does well until the end of the winter. It's as if the lengthening days send a signal of senescence and it self destructs. Now I'm seeing many similar reports, and very few like this for other varieties. Thoughts?

My condolences to all, but we can learn from this!!

I also suffered loss, but the knowledge gained may be worth more!

I lost one KM-5, a small Ele Ele, (but the large one did better than most musa), and one of three MacKlayis planted in the ground. The ones in pots did not fare as well.

Mulch, really helps the corms over-winter, the pseudostem may be lost but, with mulch a corm is more likely to survive!

Best wishes and good growing to all!! :2239:

Interesting observation Howard. Last year my Siam Ruby thrived all winter. I was in the warmest brightest spot in my front porch and used up the most water of all the bananas all winter long. This year just as you mentioned it lasted all winter and then just completely died down and has now thrown out 2 vigorous pups. The only difference I can tell was that it was not in as warm and bright a spot. Other bananas next to it lived and limped along all winter and I thought the SR would do the same..... nope. As mentioned , as soon as the days started lengthening it just crapped out and started putting out the pups........hmmmmmm?

I would like to mourn the loss of my Helen's Hybrid, the first musa seed I germinated ever. I chopped the corm down to the solid part, but I'm not holding my breath.

I would also like to mourn all of my Velutinas, Luckily I gave one to my Dad who kept it in his conservatory all winter so some good news there.

I now think I had one loss--a Dwarf Red--I thought it had made it, but the stem collapsed the other day--I cut it off at the base and the corm is mushy. I had it in my greenhouse, but it may have gotten too wet.

I had mine stored in the office it was 5ft.. then the pstem just toppled over. What a shame.. On the brighter side my Mission Olive made it thru the winter & is buddin' out (I had my fingers crossed for that one) :^)

So sorry to hear about all your losses - water has a lot to answer for!!! No consolation I know - but we have had such a hot and wet spring that my main 1000 fingers trunk rotted from all the water coming off the roof - but I have good pups to replace it. People can't believe how rarely I water my orchids either! lol! I am mean with water but thankfully we don't have the cold that you have to contend with - so brave of you!

I lost both my musa basjoos too so I know exactly how it feels. They etoliated when I brought them inside and eventually rotted out most likely due to the lack of enough sunlight.

I guess I'm too far north to be growing bananas.

No, that one is an unknown right now--I had 2 of those in containers and both are still looking OK--they had 1 full size leaf each when I took them out of the greenhouse, but wind broke all of them, so right now they are just standing stalks. This warm weather should bring them out soon. All of my other container plants have new leaves.

Steve, I don't they rotted because of not enough sunlite. I think the roots were not dry enough. I have a big IC that is just now (since Oct) putting out a new leaf. It stayed sorta dormant all winter so I hardly gave any water & it really had no direct sun. I only watered the actively growing plants.
