View Full Version : Dividing a Giant Calla Lily

Hi I have a Giant White Calla Lily I got from Plant Delights. It's developed enough, that it seems like I could divide it.
It's planted outside, and given our current weather- I could probably divide while dormant.
I've seen that "regular" callas seem to get bigger and bigger but stay connected to the "bulb"- is it best to cut off or break off the other plants?
How and I do so without damaging the "Main" bulb?
Is it best to divide when the leaves are gone or while it's still green?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have mine potted, but you can divide them exactly like a hosta. Dig it up and rinse off all the soil you can, then cut them up with a sharp steak knife. Isn't that the coolest calla you've ever grown? I'm very impressed with them, and their multiplication skills!

Yeah I'm really impressed- the Leaves are so huge too almost alocasia--ish I got mine just a few months ago and it still managed to bloom outdoors here- and it actually hasn't been damaged by the cold weather yet (and we've had some cool nights).
Thanks for the Help.

UPDATE:
These things are really hardy- mine is already leafing out again- I'm not sure if it's because it's so big or what, but I'm really amazed. I have it planted near some other "regular" callas but they haven't even begun to break the surface of the ground.
I can't wait to see how big it gets this year.

bringing up this old thread again. has anyone besides me tested these for hardiness? I had some planted in the flower bed year before last. I dug them up in the fall and repotted and put in the greenhouse. Apparently I didn't get the bottom of the corm of one of them, and it came back up last spring. Well, we didn't have a bad winter, heck geraniums covered with a bag of leaves survived in the ground. I let it grow all summer and just left it there. It's coming up again! I know we got a couple of days of -10 and it wasn't mulched or anything. I think the key might be to plant them at least a foot deep, at least here in zone 5. I guess I'll try one on purpose, and planted a foot deeper than usual and see if I have two next year, or if it's just a random happening.
