Anyone know what this stuff is. It was mixed in with my soil my DC came with. I always just figured it was some sort of perlite. Today I saw a pebble, picked it up and gave it a rub to see if it would fall apart. Instead it burst and sprayed some white liquid at me. Could it be some sort of time release fert that just never opened?
It is about the size of small perlite. maybe 1/3 pea size

Yeah, it's a type of slow-release fertilizer. I've found it in potted plants before.

I guess they made the shell to thick, because these have never opened.

They don't open. It's an osmotic coating to slow down the release of the fertilizer. it seeps through over time. The little shells remain in the soil mix.
