OK so I am depressed. No frosts yet so far this year, but from the arctic is coming a perfect scenario. It takes a lot for us to freeze, and I think that might be coming.

This image shows a strong jet stream coming STRAIGHT south on Monday. This is like transporting our houses 1000 miles to the north. We're really unlucky. If arctic air comes over the ocean, it can moderate some but in this case, we have no hope..... It's going to be a rough 1 or 2 nights before the warm rain comes later in the week.
I've been using up a lot of freezepruf, and tomorrow I should finish. Really though.. what else can I do? Ideas people? It's just going to be one night and I hate to take so much damage for one freak night.
Should I set little fires? set out space heaters? just spray more freezepruf? What about an electric blanket haha
Where the heck is the EL NINO?!? ahhh this is painful. Maybe some of you in colder areas are used to it, but it's so depressing to lose plants like this
How cold is it going to get? No way to know now, but it could be upper 20s.......
I'm depressed too. We're expecting 30 degree temperature tonight. A week ago the winds broke two banana plants in half. They both had just put out a bloom. I'm leaving them half broken in hopes that they may still survive, but previous winds have also decimated most of the leaves.
I have a Manzano that has some small bananas, but who knows what it will look like tomorrow. I was planning to order some Freezpruf, but didn't expect temperatures to drop like this so quickly.

Wrap the best trunks on your plants with burlap or fiberglass house insulation. You may lose some leaves but the plants should recover quickly down there.

Oh boy this could be ugly until Wednesday. We could be looking at 3-4 year temp lows. I knew this would be an ugly year since the Sun is at the quiet portion of its 11 year cycle.

What the heck is this..!???? SNOW? arrgh. Be positive I guess.. it's global warming
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SACRAMENTO HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR THE SOUTHERN SACRAMENTO VALLEY... DELTA AND NORTHERN SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY EVENING.
* TIMING: SNOW IS EXPECTED TO POSSIBLY BEGIN EARLY MONDAY MORNING AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE DAY BEFORE TAPERING OFF IN THE EVENING.
* SNOW LEVEL: LOWERING TO NEAR SEA LEVEL EARLY MONDAY.
On the other hand, it's exciting to re-live the year 1888.

I'll help you with an un-scientific experiment to see if your freezeproof is worth it or not. All my banana plants fried the last 2 nights, and are unprotected aside from the canopy of drooping leaves.
We had a nice soaking rain so I won't be watering thru the night.
My most cold sensitive are in an enclosure with Christmas lights, but are still fried, being cold sensitive.
It's supposed to get to 26 degrees tonight.
I went out 1/2 hour ago and there is already frost built up.
Good luck to you.

It was 24.4 degrees this morning when I left to go to work (on my motorcycle). I'm not worried about any of the corms surviving, I am worried about the stems surviving so I can have fruit next year...
I'm also concerned that my citrus might be toast...

My bananas are still green but toniight will be on the 32 F so I am cutting all the banana leaves and tied them around the pstem and I will put a trash can liners on top of the pstem and I'll wrap the pstem with clear plastics.
This is the first time I'll do this so I am crossing my fingers if I can save most of my bananas. The small ones I am covering them with plastic pots.

We got down to 29.8F last night. Definitely cold. Woke up to a frost on my front yard. I didn't even want to look around the yard out of fear. Turns out the only plants toasted were my bananas and my babaco papaya. I didn't cover anything, but tonight I may need to do something if I want to save them.
Any advice on keeping them alive?

I covered some citrus, but not the large trees. I am heading out right now to see what the damage is and what I can do to help them all along.

If tonight gets down to 24F will my mature Ice Cream P-stem die? (unprotected)

I feel so bad for all of you. When my plants are out (& planted inground) & they call for frost, I find old blankets, sheets, towels & wrap the p stem. The leaves had all died but the plant was fine. I sure hope at least some of your plants live.

It's 1AM and 33.5, looks like we get off easy tonight. AND THIS IS THE LAST OF IT! Since Warm air is coming in... good riddance! It's like a nuke went off last night though from the damage for the one night

That one isn't my house so there is slight variation, but it's close enough. It's 28.1 now, so it's dropped 2+ degrees in the last hour. Not sure what is happening. I'm hoping the humidity rises and saves me:) Come on!! 82% keep going up! Well what happens, happens. Very scary since we still have 5 hours to go in this night!

I should have cut the leafs off and wrapped them up, but I didn't... Sometimes it only gets down to 30 for the year and it's not enough for all the extra stuff. So I was caught off guard :( We'll find out how tough they are

It shows now 24.9 but the official at the home thermometer is 27.1. Either way, this is unexplored territory. I took out the garbage and it feels sooo cold, I don't know how anything could survive.
Who thinks my unprotected 11' pstem ice creams are still alive?? any guesses?

It got down to 27F last night. The lantanas got burned and that's always a bad sign. All the bananas are green with no damage thanks to christmas lights and frost blankets :)

You were smart not to use freezepruf.... We got down to like 23.4 or something... ugh and the first night of 29F of this, I was sick. Now looking back, I would gladly take 29 degrees

My P-Stems felt hard and are green on the bigger bananas. So I am hoping they pull though... I think they will ;) I lost some large hibiscus that has been growing for a couple years though. arrgh
