View Full Version : Snow in Houston??!!

What the???? Ok, I know it's December now but I am seriously not ready for snow. Our local weathermen are forecasting a very good chance of mixed precipitation and snow for the Houston area on Friday. Unfortunately, I have an eye appointment tomorrow afternoon and will not be able to get a jump on wrapping my bananas or bringing in my plumerias and heliconias. I'm stressing out! This is Houston. I've live here for about 6 1/2 years and if it snows later this week it will be the third time it has snowed since I've been here.

Ouch! Wish ya nothing but luck getting the plants safe! We never get snow in central Oklahoma, at the start of December... till now. Ours is coming in tonight & tomorrow & I'll bet it's the same stuff that's gonna hit ya Friday.

Believe you me I know your pain.. Friday am snow and a low sat morning of 28F.. now that's not just frost.... My external nanners are taped and almost bagged.. Well a have the guest suite full of nanners out of the elements..
With this cool weather so early sun must be low on spots or flares or whatever keeps it warmer..? I'm thinkin' I won't have to drive to Marshall (Tx) to the ice rink to go skating..

Hello Brent,
I'm sorry to hear the snow news. I will send you warm wishes from California that all your plants make it safely.

Take care,

Andrew

Brent, we are in the same situation as you. NWS reporting a 70% of snow with accumulation of 1 to 2 inches. If this does, in fact, happen, it will be the first time in recorded history that southwest Louisiana has snow this early. We only see snow once every decade or so, and the last time was last year but usually in the month of January or February. Plus we stand to set a record low Friday night as well if it drops to 31 F. I scurried around yesterday digging up 12 plumeria trees. I had already moved all of my heliconia and other container tropicals into the greenhouse. This afternoon, I'm going to spray my bananas with Freez Pruf and wrap the Ae Ae's. The only thing this weather is good for is duck hunting, which, I will be doing this weekend.

Steve- yeah, they are talking about a possible low of 27 here for Sat. morning and that's in Houston. It could be colder out where I live! I had an eye appointment yesterday evening and didn't get home until 8:30 so I have done absolutely nothing to get ready for this. All of my plumerias are still in the ground, no bananas wrapped (two with fruit also), all potted plants such as heliconias, some bananas, other tender plants all still outside. I'll be one busy dude when I get home this afternoon. How about if you catch a quick flight to Houston and give me a hand? I'll pick you up at the airport!

Brent, my back can't handle any more stress. I feel for you. My son and a his friend helped me a lot yesterday afternoon. Otherwise, I'd be in your boat.

If there had been a shorter notice I would've been screwed.. I'm glad I can relax today.. Then again I had help splitting wood for an hour yesterday.. (I rented a splitter and man alive that's the way to go..) :^) It's snowing tomorrow unless there's a miracle.

Boy, I feel bad for you guys in the south. All your plants are thriving outside and BAM temps drop tot he 20s and snow comes. 20s are cold here, so in the south I can only imagine how you must feel. It looks like all the people living DIRECTLY on the east coast will be safe from the snow, but areas inland like atlanta, northern Louisiana, houston, all the way up to DC will be seeing some snow. Fortunately for me there is only a small chance of a mix at night and temps at night should stay around 32 (so hopefully nothing freezes, because we havent had a freeze so far this year) but all my plants will be inside by then anyway.

Hope nothing gets too damaged, and on the bright side at least snow is mildly enjoyable!

Winterized my bananas last night. Its going to be worse than they said because its supposed to be 37 right now and its already down to 33 in SugarLand. It said 3-5in when it wasn't supposed to hit freezing until 12-1 I can only guess what it is now. Especially since there is supposed to be moisture until 8-10pm (up to 80%). Good chance there will be more than I've ever seen here and I was born here. It did get below 20 (5 one year) a few winters but only 1-2in of snow at that time.

Edit - says 36 now so who knows

I think If I saw snow in my yard I'd be ill.. Snow in Arkansas is ok, but not here.. Definately a contrasting landscape. Mr. Jim Cantori on the Weather channel is in Houston.. on site for the show.. not a good sign.. 1-3 inches of white stuff.. You know an inch of rain = a foot of snow.. So be glad it's not a couple feet of snow the way it rains down here.. Good Luck to everyone.. (no smiles) <-thinkin beer-30 needs to hurry up.. lol

Supposed to be in low upper 20's low 30's here in the Phoenix, AZ Suburbs tongiht. I am going to gamble and not cover this year, plants are too big. If they die off I am sure they will return in spring. May just put a fan out see if that helps....

Google climategate. Global warming is all fake... 100% confirmed fake

Other recent studies have shown CO2 only warms the earth 1/8th originally thought. So basically any warming/cooling is a result of solar activity, not mans.

It was sticking next to the office when it was heavy. The first time it started to accumulate pretty good right before it melted. When I left it was heavy again and started accumulating again. There was probably a good 3-5in as they said but its been warm enough it goes away pretty quick when it stops (32-34).

I just went out a few minutes ago to harvest the fruit off of my 'Marrs' orange
and the lawn is beginning to freeze and I could feel ice on some of my plant covers. There's going to be a lot of dead and damaged plants by tomorrow morning. It's about 33 out there right now. :(

I was giggling like a school girl with I saw the snow. I was lucky enough to find some thing to cover the nanners in pots. The ones in ground in the back I just layed an extra 2 inches of Hay that I had been mulching with for Extra protection will it work? probably not but Ill see once I get home. Up here by the woodlands it never stuck. I was hoping to get home early oh, well.

do not defy the universal axiom - if it's too cold, it's caused by global warming, If it's too warm it's caused by global warming.

It got down to 28 at my place last night- the coldest I've seen it here in the 6 1/2 years I've lived here. Almost all of my banana leaves are brown and drooping, but then that happens every year. It just happened a little earlier than usual this year. I didn't wrap my 'Orinoco' fruit but I did wrap my 'Dwarf Cavendish' fruit. Both may be toast now, however.

Hey, Texans, we may get our shot at snow tomorrow morning in the Sacramento Valley:

Warnings for Carquinez Strait and Delta, California : Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/018.html#WIN)
Statement as of 2:56 PM PST on December 06, 2009

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 4 am to noon PST
Monday...

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 4 am to noon PST
Monday.

* Timing: snow is expected to possibly begin early Monday morning
and continue through around noon before tapering off.

* Snow level: lowering to near sea level early Monday.

* Main impact: periods of light to occasionally heavy snow will be possible
during the morning hours on Monday. Snowfall accumulations of 1
to 3 inches may occur. Significant disruptions to the local
transportation network may occur.

While there is still some uncertainty regarding this developing
weather situation... it does appear that there is a strong
potential for a band of accumulating snow to occur in the Central
Valley Monday morning from around Marysville southward through
Stockton.

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency.

I'm right at sea level (my bananas might be +1) and it was about 35 years or a little more ago when we had our last snow and it didn't even last long enough for me to see it. My son is hoping big time for snow tomorrow even though the chance of 1-3 inches would make it crazy around here. My only 4WD vehicle is in the shop for some minor work.

That is awesome! I love how the bananas still had green tips. They really didnt see it comming. It looks like the south got it worse than here (only some accumulations on the top of cars and roofs, but nothing even on the grass).

Im going to be seeing low 20s this week, so it looks like most of the nation will be seeing temps in the 20s or lower some point soon if they havent already (except for extreme southern california along the coast and florida of course!)
