Hey All! I love cannas and I know a lot of you out there do too! How about some pictures of cannas?

Cheryl brought me a beautiful Pink Sunburst when we met up the other day to celebrate our birthdays.

My daughter brought me a Dr. Ingrid also for my birthday:

I'm wild about cannas!

Mine are showing signs of winter lethargy, after a showy summer extravaganza of colors.

My newly planted Cleopatra tubers and Journey's End are DRENCHED from rain from 2 nights ago.

I've pulled them under my covered patio. I hope they make it through the cold.

The Cleopatras are so beautiful--it's my signature image. The foliage is just as striking, brilliant green with wide burgundy stripes.

Pink sunbursts are really pretty. I haven't seen any at my Home Depots here.

Oh, man, I just planted 2 of these. I hope they look like this in a few weeks.

They're sitting in wet and cold dirt right now; I just might have to get out my hair dryer and give them a blowout. :)

And the Cleopatras ... this is my holy grail of cannas. Stunning! Provided, of course, I don't give it rot.

Yes the second picture with the blue sky is Stuttgart. Taylor figured out what the pink ones with blue leaves are called but I can't remember what he told me. The ruffly looking one is Pink Futurity and the other one with the water drops is an unknown that looks similar but is much more striking than the Pink Futurity.

Great pictures, everybody! I love Cannas, too. Wish I had more types. :)

I found it online called Canna glauca 'Erebus' but Plant Delights also has it called Canna 'Thai One On'.

It appears you'll need to add me to the list :D! I have exactly one banana plant but my brother's canna collection is rapidly increasing :ha:! In fact it was cannas that led me to my recent desire to grow banana plants. I love big leaf plants. Until this past summer, I thought there was exactly one species of banana and had never seen a banana flower.
The cold has knocked back the taller cannas (except the orange ones), but the dwarfs are still green and blooming. The orange cannas were mislabeled so there's no way of knowing what variety they are. But I will be happy to add photos of the Lipstick and Picasso cannas to this post when I get the time.
BTW, the Pink Sunburst, Phaison, Erebus, & Cleopatra are definitely on my list for next spring :D! Thanx for sharing all those beautiful photos!
Note: The photos I show will be of cannas my brother grew.

Guys and gals - they are all just gorgeous! Last time I went to South Africa I took some seed of Canna Durban to my brother who lives in Durban. Here we only have the basic red/yellow flowers and the leaf-rollers make such a mess of them that I took them out. If they had been something special I would have made an effort to protect them.

My gardeners son gave me a species canna in a pot as a thank you, which hasn't flowered yet - but the leaf-rollers seem to leave it alone.

I've started some babies from seeds, don't know what they'll turn out to be . They're up about 2-4 inches tall and some have red leaves and some have green leaves. We had seeds mixed up from a mix of cannas, some of the plants were cleopatra, some were red king humbert, some were pretoria/bengal tiger, some were intrigue, and some were journey's end. I guess they'll turn out to be something cool anyway. a few of them have red leaves so at least I know they're the red king humberts or at least a cross of them.
I'm also growing some hostas from seeds. I like seed growing except for with bananas! I don't have patience for that very well..

I have never seen leaf rollers on Canna's. Didn't even knew they existed.
Nevertheless I will keep an eye on my Cannas this year to see if there
are any caterpillars on the leaves.
Mine are all in pots now to give them a headstart and they are pushing
leaves now.

Btw ...I had Leaf Rollers in Roses in the past.

Yes, they love eating the rolled up leaves. If I find them and the plants are not overly infested I smash them with my fingers.

Luckily we had a cold winter so I would assume they may be less of a problem here this year.

Big Canna lover here! Great photos. I'm no expert on cannas but I am very interested in the canna virus that seems so rampant in so many of these plants.

I've done some research on the virus and it looks like many of the plants in these pictures have it. From what I've read canna leaves that are healthy don't have any blemishes on their leaves. Ones like tropicanna, sunburst, etc shouldn't have any green spots either.

Regardless your plants still look great.

I have a rather large collection of cannas myself and I'm concerned about separating the virused plants from the healthy ones to stop the spread. If anyone reading this thread has any more info I'd love to hear it.

Jananas Bananas
04-19-2010, 09:15 AM
Here are some good pictures and articles concerning Canna Virus:

canna virus - Google Search (http://www.google.com/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&q=canna+virus&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=wVfMS8f3MIH88AbtlIDPBA&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCEQsAQwAw)

Damage can also be due to excessive sunlight, too cold, wind. I personally had a week and a half of 80 degree weather in February followed by near freezing temperatures for equally as long. This will stress and distort newly emerging leaves. Here are some internet quotes:

A low nitrogen level will leave Canna foliage with yellow striata, and slow its growth rate. Phosphurus helps with the transformation of solar energy into chemical energy; proper plant maturation; withstanding stress. Potassium helps in the building of protein, photosynthesis that keeps the foliage a consistent green, and reduction of diseases. As can be deduced from that, deficiencies in theses basic macronutrients can result in unhealthy plants with effects that can be mistaken for Canna virus. Those are only the three primary nutrients required for healthy plant growth, and many others are required in sufficient quantities to provide healthy, vigorous growing conditions.

The virus manifests itself as a crinkled leaf. However if you are 'forcing' your plants into growth using a heat mat, very often the first couple of leaves will be crinkled and distorted. Once the plants are removed from the heat mat normal leaf formation should follow. If you find that the subsequent leaves are distorted, chances are you have a virus.

Comparing your leaf growth that follows will help in determining a plant suspect of virus.

Prevention methods:

To help ensure you don't spread the virus you will need to make sure you sterilize your tools when moving to a different plant. 10% bleach should be fine

When receiving plants from a trade or store, grow them in a container until you are sure they are healthy.

Soaking bulbs in a 5% bleach solution for 15 minutes to kill any viruses before planting.

Cannas get infected the virus will spread to all plants, because the bugs that eat off the infected plant will spread it to the next. When I have a infected plant I dig it up cut off all the bad spots on the root, cut all the black roots dip in a bleach bath, then plant in a separate container and watch it for a year. The next season you can replant in your beds. This has worked for me many times, I am not sure if you should try this (or even trust cannas bought with the virus) but if you do buy some better go ahead and bleach and plant is small pot and watch for a season, all my new plants get dipped in a copper bath before I ever plant them.

Hi i have a canna that is just about to flower my first one out of 8 plants i have grown this year and two different variaties. once the rain stops i will take a picture and post in on here. The canna that is about to flower is named canna indica here in the uk. I have seen one that looks identical on this topic that goes by the name of canna robert kemp? May be its the same one.

Can you get a close up of the flowers? Are they solid red? How tall are they? From a distance they look a lot like Palmtree's Robert Kemp, but am guessing since you are asking that they don't look like that up close.

Many Cannas don't make seed, they are sterile. I don't have a list wich are but you wil see that from many varieties there is no seed for sale.

Canna Land : Seed Pods (http://cannas.momcom.net/archives/cat_seedpods.htm)

You have to wait until the seed pod turns brown. The seed is hard, round and black and looks like a large BB. Most of the fancy hybrids are sterile and do not make seed as Ron mentioned. You will have to divide the rhizomes for those. But they will double or triple every year so that is easy to do! :)

Hi jananas Bananas. I am really sorry but i have to say this, your canna is virused. The cells on the foilage are broken and so are the lines, and the leaf growth is distorted. If it is grown near your other canna's it can totally wipe out your whole stock as the virus is passed on very easily. I sadly had to destroy a tropicanna this year as this too had broken lines and cells. Sadly there is such a big spread of this virus it is hard to control now it is global. A lot of gardners don't even know they have got a canna with a virus.

This has been addressed in a prior post. Weather conditions can affect the leaf growth and appearance and yes the cells can and will appear broken from this at times. The picture you have shown was from early growth after 80 plus degree days in February followed by a very cold snap for equally as long. They are not virused, Grasshoppers yes, Caterpillars yes, Sunburned yes, virused no. How do I know? The Texas Department of Agriculture tests for this. I have random soil and tissue tests done on my plants at any time. The Agriculture Commissioner for the state is my family member. Please be careful posting to a public forum making statements such as this. I have had several members of this forum as well as other forums come by my home and compliment my cannas (and other plants) for looking so strong and healthy. ????????

I meant no offence to you janana's and sorry if i have? i didn't set out to do that! I just didn't want your other canna's to get damaged IF you did have a virused canna. May be the difference in the weather did cause the distorted growth and cell breaks, Like you say who know's. I am just going buy an article i have been reading only two day's ago on virused canna's and yours did have some of the same symptoms. But as for posting on a public forum i think this should be done to let people know of the virus that canna's are picking up so easily. As a lot of growers don't even know the symptoms.

Here is the link for the article on virused canna's if you or anyone wants to have a look. SORRY once again janana's if i caused you any offence.

My Pink Sunburst canna finally bloomed. it is around 2-3 feet tall, and the gorgeous pink blooms I have been anxiously awaiting are a beautiful and vibrant.....ORANGE! Must be a mislabel, as the leaves are indeed just like those for Pink Sunburst. The flower looks like a Bengal Tiger, but the plant's size is too small. Any ideas? [QUOTE=saltydad;142671]My Pink Sunburst canna finally bloomed. it is around 2-3 feet tall, and the gorgeous pink blooms I have been anxiously awaiting are a beautiful and vibrant.....ORANGE! Must be a mislabel, as the leaves are indeed just like those for Pink Sunburst. The flower looks like a Bengal Tiger, but the plant's size is too small. Any ideas?

I would dare say that it is a pink sunburst, or it may even be a canna durban but the durbans mainly have red/orange coloured petals, it certainly isn't a black knight as these are a fierce red and a tropicanna also mainly has orange flowers as well. So i would say you are right with your first suspision and it being a pink sunburst. :03:

Hi Howard! Pink Sunburst blooms are always pink so you can definitely say it is not that. Tropicanna and Durban have orange blossoms, Durban is Medium sized and Tropicanna is tall. Sizes can vary though due to conditions and can be smaller or even stunted if potbound. Here is a link for three variegate leaf cannas:

Very nice amber, i would love to see these when they flower, keep me posted on how they do. Google a canna called cleopatra, i think you may just like these, that are very different to most canna's with them have different colours on either side of a leaf. :)

In one of the discussion forums about starting callas, cannas and gingers it was suggested to place the pots with the rhizomes on a heating pad. I did that, but found, that there was not enough space. Thus I planned to use an electric throw for next spring. These are here in Canada about $60.-. I thought it a good idea to wait for Boxing Day sales. And it worked out well. I got one today for half price.

One drawback is that these throws (from Sunbeam) are programmed to shut off after 3 hours. It appears this can at least be partially overcome. I turned it on “High” and after 2½ hours turned it off for 10 seconds to give it time to reset (I don’t really know if this delay is necessary) and it is now on for another 2 ½ hours, exceeding the 3 hrs from the original “On” significantly. Therefore it appears possible, that you can reset it for two hrs immediately before you go to bed and if you 'get lucky' in the middle of the night, you can reset it once more. With appropriate insulation you can keep the temperature up 24/7. :)
The upshot is, that it appears possible that you can reset it for a new 3 hrs. before the first time has run out. But in order to assure, that you can buy a throw cheap, you have to do it now. Stores stock up new merchandise for spring and if they still have winter items then, then it was due to bad planning.

Ah yes, I also measured the temperature by tossing a thermometer directly on the blanket after it was fully heated it came out at 27^C or 80^F; just about ideal for the purpose.
Best,
Olaf

Olaf, you might try a timer. Just plug your blanket into it and schedule when it shuts off and on. They usually have tabs on them that can turn on twice and shut off twice - I think they are about $5 dollars. I have my grow lights plugged into them. They work great. I also have my Christmas tree plugged into one. I hate the thought of getting up in the middle of the night if you don't have to.

Hi Sherry,

I live in the beautiful, sunny Okanagan (Penticton, BC), though right now it cannot compete with your parts. We have so far not had any snow worth shoveling, just a dusting now and then, which quickly evaporated in the dry air. No more leaves on the trees, the frost killed most of the still remaining flowers and the countryside looks rather sad. But the Winter Jasmin is just about to start blooming! - Can't read the calendar, since it is really not due until late January through March. Maybe the rather severe frost, we had in mid November confused it. ;)

Best,
Olaf

I picked those acorns up in Turkey in 2008 and can really not remember the size of the trees they came from. I was just amazed by the size of the seeds and now only regret, that I did not pick up more of them. The seeds shriveled a bit and subsequently fell out of their cups, So I had to glue them back in. They make great decorations for Christmas.

We often pick up little items to hang on the tree, as we travel. But that is usually just one or two of a kind, so I already thought, that I went overboard by picking up 4.

Hi JaNan,
I wondered, where that post was, since I planned to elaborate on it shortly after our return from Vietnam a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately it did not work. Once the power flow is restarted by the timer to the electric throw, it does not switch on again, since the switch in the throw was programmed to stay off under power until manually turned back on. But although I was out about $15.- it worked out well anyway. The throw c/w all the canna, calla, ginger and bananas is located on a shelf under a small sky light in our en-suite dressing room on the way to the bathroom. The switch hangs down right by the door, which I pass at least a dozen times during day and night and all I have to do is click the button 3 times on the way by, whenever it is off.
Best, and thanks for a good try,
Olaf

My Canna rhizomes have wintered well, so that this year I have enough of them to experiment with a bit.
Therefore I want to try to leave some of them outside in a protected area over next winter. The time to
plant them outside is approaching and I would have to plant them on that lower level now.

Now, with bananas it is possible to plant them deep, enough to avoid the ground frost zone. Has anybody
had any experience with planting Canna Lilies deeper? 8 to 10 inches with a good layer of mulch on top
would probably be enough to keep them well out of the frost zone here, but may be too deep for the new
shoots to rise through in spring?

Thanks,
Olaf

The color on which one Nannerfunboi? I'm guessing you are talking about either the Australia or the Cleopatra. Both keep their color. Sometimes the Cleopatra will have stronger variations, or lesser on the leaves. You always keep your fingers crossed for more. The flowers will have split colors on them also. The following is part of a posting of mine on April 4

(snip)...Now, with bananas it is possible to plant them deep, enough to avoid the ground frost zone. Has anybody
had any experience with planting Canna Lilies deeper? 8 to 10 inches with a good layer of mulch on top
would probably be enough to keep them well out of the frost zone here, but may be too deep for the new

Thanks,

I did not any feedback from any body, who has tried this deep planting bit, therefore I took my biggest plant on May13
and planted it a full 6 inches below the pot level. The 8 to 10 inches, which I anticipated 6 weeks earlier appeared
a bit excessive, even though the plant was quite large.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=42768 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=42768&ppuser=7269)

This picture shows, where I affixed the marker ribbon prior to planting. Another reason for not going any deeper than
6” is, that it would have substantially buried the second sprout.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=42769 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=42769&ppuser=7269)

This shot, taken with the Canna in the hole prior to burying shows another small shoot developing just to the
left of the big one, If it can make it to the top from 6 inches down, that would be an early indication of the chances
of next spring’s recovery, providing, that the rhizome can survive.

Now, of course the primary concerns are, if the plant will survive the deep planting, without rotting, which if any of
the two smaller shoots will survive, and then let us see what happens next spring.

BTW I bought the rhisome for the plant as a Canna Cleopatra, but its leaves never showed the beautiful markings, which
Dalmationsoap's displayed???

Outstanding Greg! They are all so lovely, I have canna bloom envy!!! :ha:

Olaf, I have not had any experience planting deeply or I would have replied. I have purchased rhizomes for Cleopatra 3 different times from 3 different vendors and never got any color. I was terribly envious of Ante's last year when he was posting pictures of his. I finally bought some that were leafed out to make sure I got some color. :)

Ok, Olaf got me coming here to read his new experiment! It looks interesting and honestly I can't say if I think they would come up or not through that many inches. I would think as long as its loose they would find their way up! I just put a 3" layer of compost and manure plus about 1-2" of mulch on top of mine.

This thread has me wanting more cannas! All I currently have is about 50-75 from seeds that I got from Thailand and started last year I'd say about 75% of them are back up this year. Most are green leafed and a few red leafed as well. None bloomed last year as I planted them late so I can't wait to see what I got. I also have some that look like Robert Kemp they get about 6ft and have bright red blossoms

Does anyone want to trade some of these pretty canna's?!!??! I have some bananas I could part with, the robert kemp looking cannas, cattail, iris, pickeral rush, and alot more if you see my thread on plants for sale/trade. Let me know if you guys want to trade. I would LOVE a stuttgart and any of the variegated foilage cannas!!!!

Olaf please keep us updated on your project it is interesting, how low do temps get where you are???

I will take a pic of my Thailand cannas tomorrow and post!:lurk:

Hi Kat,

our zone here is 6a. That brings us pretty close to 0^F or about -16^ C. Though we always have mid winter thaws, which often take all the frost out of the ground.

Therefore if this little experiment works here, it should certainly in Zone 8/9.

Best,
Olaf

OK, weather has been in the 70s and 60s during the day, 50s at night. How long would you expect from corm planting to sprouting here in my zone 7? I have c. musifolia in for 2 weeks now, with no show yet.

I've never had a problem with cannas coming back but I've never had anything but plain old ol fashioned ones. So, I'm sure if I had some of the more tropical ones I would have to protect them more. Let me know how it works!

Don't worry because my cannas are not budging either. The only ones that are growing are the ones I have in a pot that I leave out in an extremely warm and sunny spot. The ground is still too cold here for any of the ones I planted in the ground to move much. My cannas usually sprout now, but with the lack of a really long heat wave so far, they haven't sprouted. It usually takes about a week of sun and 80s to move then out of the ground and once they are about 2 feet tall, there is no stopping there growth! My first flowers come in late june for the ones in pots and mid July for the ones in slightly shadier spots in the ground.

Surprisingly here in FL its been chilly the last few days in the 60s which is record lows for us right now, we are barely getting over 80 this week and last week we were in the mid 90s. I have put some things into pots myself because I'm not sure where I want to plant! What annuals are you planting for color?

I usually do not care for lining up a daisy then a pansy then a daisy..., But here I could not help it,
because there was only a 5.0m x 0.43m (16.5' x 17") strip between our deck and the neighbour’s fence.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=44216 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=44216&ppuser=7269)

This picture is of the “full sun” section of that strip, that graduates into almost full shade. It shows
from left a Calla (mostly hidden with the white dots), a Canna Wyoming, a C. Cleopatra, which is just
starting to bloom, another Wyoming, which is developing a flower bud, and another Cleopatra, which
has already bloomed. The strip then continues into increasing shade with Goat’s Beard, some hostas,
a Cimicifuga and in the deepest shade a Przewalsky Ligularia, which gets only ½ hour of sun through
a narrow opening at noon. That is enough to make all its leaves curl up and shrivel :(

But a couple of ours back in shade and it unfolds again in all its glory. :)

A quick question for all of you canna lovers! Does anyone know why cannas would bloom at a shorter height than normal? My Canna indicia red are blooming at about 3 to 4 feet but should bloom at about 5 to 6 feet.

Thanks Greg. They have been the same size for over a month. I feed mine every 2 weeks also and foliar feed every week. Maybe its the heat that is slowing them down. I hope they take off soon because I want them to be several feet tall by the end of the year. They are producing baby plants so I guess I would be just as happy with a clump of them

Down below I have shown the "full sun" section of that 5m long stretch between patio and the
neighbour's fence. I thought, that I might as well show the deep shadow part of the strip, even
though it does not include a canna, which, of course, would not survive without the sun:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=44409 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=44409&ppuser=7269)

The plants are from left: A Hosta Guacamole, a Cimicifuga and a Ligularia Przewalskii. The latter two
have been "raided" by cutting off rhizomes which I transplanted elsewhere.

In the transition between the two sections there is a Goat's Beard and a Hosta Krossa Regal, which
I selected, because it is supposedly (one of) the tallest hosta(s). It is now in its second year and all of
8" high. I have two more in pots in the shady part my "tropical" section and they are doing just as
miserably. Entirely different environments, other Hostas thriving in both sections, but the one which
should be the biggest turned out to be the tiniest. - Go figure!

I think they are growing slow because they have a virus. Unfortunately most cannas have viruses nowadays and its actually threatening their existence because of how contagious it is (it only affects cannas though). My cannas have this same virus so I dug them out. Im still getting bad results from the ones that didnt show the virus, so I am wondering if they have them too. I would say that at least 60% of the cannas I have ever gotten has had this virus.

The Virus symptoms are...
- Bad growth
- Unusual white and or yellow streaks in the leaves (on canna cultivators where white strikes shouldnt be)
- Flowering at a short height (and then eventually no flowers).

Some have a minor virus and grow out of it, but once the virus effects the cannas growth, there isnt much saving it.

this yr i did plant them later than i usually do.. but.. they sure are growing
fast.. so.. hope they do get huge again this yr!!!!
i feed them my fertilize mix.. my own manure tea (rabbit manure & bat

I'm new to Canna's. Have two outside in pots, and one in the ground.

Can Canna's be overwintered in the ground in my zone 6ish? And as far as the ones in the pots, are they like Banana's where I can bring them in, and give them minimal water over the winter?

If they are mulched well you can leave them outside, just bring the potted ones inside in the garage or wherever you would store your bananas. If you don't want to take any chances, just pull up the corms (or dig up) and cut off the leaves and store your corms wrapped loosely in some newspaper and placed in a cardboard box. (I would not use plastic or store in a plastic box) Everyone has their own ways though so we'll see if any one else has suggestions.

There are tons of links on the internet too:

I have potted canna as house plants. They are watered about once a week. :) I have never had them bloom inside, but I enjoy many of my leaves as much or more as the flowers. If you just want to store them to keep them alive, I would water minimally.

Hi Scott,
I live also in a Zone 6 and have a little experiment going.

I first planted one of my Cleopatras 6 inches deeper than the level of the starter pot, taking a page from
planting bananas in frost zones 1 foot deep. That part went well and this Canna is thriving.

For description of the planting procedure see here:

http://www.bananas.org/f8/canna-lovers-unite-10371-5.html
Just scroll down, until you see my avatar the second time

In fall I intend to cover the spot with about 1 foot of leaf mulch. Depending on how may rhizomes I get,
I may even try out one, which was not deep planted.

I will post here the outcome here next spring.

Best,
Olaf

Update to this post: The Cleopatra, which I planted deeper, was, of course, initially above ground
shorter than its neighbor, but it has now surpassed that one by quite a bit in height.

Now, as fall approaches and I have this Canna Wyoming/Basjoo combination in a pot, I am considering to bury
the whole assembly about one foot below surface, providing I can dig that deep because I may have a problem
with boulders. I could not go that deep with the Cleopatra, because it was not tall enough in spring.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=45529 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=45529&ppuser=7269)

As you can see in this picture the Canna is now plenty big enough to go 1' deep (The ruler is 1m long) I'll just
drop it up to 1' deep, mulch it well and see, if the Canna will pop up in the spring. I am not all that worried about
the Basjoo. :)

Great advice for the one I have in the ground. I also have two that are in pots and they are pretty big. What is the best way to over winter them? Leave them in pots and bring inside and don't water much like a banana? or cut them down to the top of the pot and let them overwinter in garage in the dirt?

Hi Rob:
I have here http://www.bananas.org/f2/my-banana-experience-lack-12904.html described in detail what I did last winter with my banana. I will
build on that this winter.

The leave filled fence around the base was probably quite effective, but the attempt to protect as much of the stem
as possible by encasing it in a tomato cage failed.

I will therefore do the following modifications:
- I will make the fence around the base 2 feet high instead of 1 and fill it up with leaves, give the fence a diameter
of 5' and add more moisture protection.
- I will probably cut the PS back to leaf level.

There have been elsewhere suggestions, that moisture may be more of a culprit in destroying the PS than frost.

For more on the same subject, please see: http://www.bananas.org/f15/basjoo-size-leaving-outside-14345.html#post172638

Best,
Olaf

my canna I planted a foot deeper didn't come back last year, but I'm going to try again. Honestly, I kind of forgot about it, but I know the general area where I planted it last year, and there's no canna there this year at all. I think I'll put out another one now in a different place just so I have another experiment going! I do have 4 pink china colocasias planted a foot deep in four locations in our year, an ensete glaucum and a bordelon and a thai black banana planted that way also to try out.

Are cannas self pollinating? We have several and just yesterday came across a bengal stripe that really caught our eye. Is it hard to propagate canna from seed? We have started many plants and have some sucess but nothing to brag about. Patience isn't one of my virtues.
