This should be a fun thread!
I wish I started it when the site started over a year ago. It would be really cool to look back on now. But hey, may as well start it now, right? :)

Today I planted a Musa 'praying hands' into the ground. It was potted up for over a year.

What bananas, if any, did you plant today?
The thread for other plants, besides bananas, is here:

Does moving them up into larger containers count? I bumped up my 4 Musa thomsonii seedlings from 4 inch pots to 1 gallon containers this afternoon.

While not planting, my bananas and tropicals are starting to make their way indoors, since night temperatures are down to 44 degrees here... :santananer:

You are aware, given the time of the year, that the only people that will be planting nanners in the ground will likely be those in Florida or southern California, donchathink? I'm getting ready to move my dwarfs and younguns into the greenhouse for the winter. Most of those will go in the ground in the Spring.

Cheers,
Mike

Last week it was California Gold and Golden Rhino Horn. Yesterday, it was Poovan, Hawaiian Apple and Lady Finger. Still need to find a spot for Dwarf French Plantain and my Walmart Unknown. It WILL be done!

Yes, San Diego has its' benefits!!

I suspected you of making up the "Poovan" banana, so I googled it. OK! I admit I have a suspiscious nature. Anyway, it seems to be from Sri Lanka and southern India, w/ decent sized, sweet, bright yellow fruit, but I couldn't find a picture. It sounds interesting.
Also some negative stuff:
"it is highly susceptible to Banana Bract Mosaic Viral (BBMV) disease and Banana Streak Virus, (BSV), which cause considerable reduction in yield."
Do we have those diseases in the US?

Yeah I was skeptical on the "Poovan" as well. Obviously not an English speaking culture that named that one. :07:

Ingens probably wont do good here, otherwise I'd try them.

Today I planted an ~20lb unknown corm in the "unknown patch". I collected it from some local brush.

Next time you visit Disney, take along a shovel. I was at their Carribean Beach resort area Sunday, and there were bananas everywhere. About all I could recognize were Dward Cavendish, but there were several varieties.

Well, many of my seeds have sprouted. I now have several hundred seedlings! Especially balbisiana and nagensiumX have been easy to sprout. I keep them under high power NaH lamps at the moment, growing in small cells, and they seem to be thriving. Species include:

Musa Formosana
Musa NagensiumX
Musa Nagensium "True form" (From seedman)
Musa Flaviflora
Musa Balbisiana
Musa Sikkimensis
Musa "Helen"
Musa Velutina
Ensete ventricosum

The bigger sikkimensis, helens and basjoos are still growing outside, and will be protected in-ground. We have had an unusually warm fall over here.

Jeff, very easy to germinate. And the most vigourous seedlings I have ever encountered. Each seed sent out 2 or more stems. A plant that was a seedling this April is now taller than basjoos that were one foot in April. But stems are skinnier. All in all a very handsome musa with red leaf-undersides, dark stems, dark green leaves, and powdery petioles. Here is a pic of my south-wall, but I am standing right in the way of the meter-tall Helens.

Today I put some Musella lasiocarpa seeds to stratification.

On Monday I put Musella lasiocarpa, Musa x paradisiaca, Musa sikkimensis, Musa ssp. 'Helen's Hybrid', Ensete glaucum, Ensete ventricosum, and Ravenala madagascariensis in water, and I'll sow them today or tomorrow.

I'm done planting for the season even though I live in So Cal. I just don't have any room! I did manage to finally get my Aloe tree planted in the front yard after having sit in a big wooden planter for 2 years! I have at least 20 plants in containers that need a spot but I haven't figured it out yet. Next spring I'm going to be real busy removing extras and some undesirables and planting Heliconias, more bananas, gingers, plumerias, Passion fruits, a Page Tangerine, a Peach Tree, a Fig tree, and whatever else comes along.

Gabe! How many seeds of M. Ingens did you have to use to get some seedlings? And where did you get them from?

Gabe15
10-09-2006, 10:57 AM
Taylor,
They are a different variety or maybe a different species altogether, but similar to M. ingens. They were a gift, I dont think you can get them anywhere yet. I had only 10 seeds, when I first planted them a year ago I got 1 of 5, then recently I planted the remaining 5 and have 2-3 coming up. The person who I got them from got 100% germination. They are rather easy to sprout.

Hi All,

As a Newbie, I just planted my first two; a Dwarf Cavendish and a Dwarf Red....all in pots! The little guys are just barely 12" long from the tip of the roots to the top of a stem (guess that's how they measure a 12" plant, huh?) But each had at least two leaves so thats a start. Maybe photos later, when there is something to photograph. In the meantime I sit, watching and waiting!!

I really enjoy the Dward Red. Mine are in the ground now and doing great, starting to really take off. I should have put them in the ground sooner than I did, I keep them potted up for a while. If you have to, give em as big a pot as you can, they will thank you for it.

In the last couple of days - an beautiful apple, and a pup I helped myself to for free - does anyone know what the free one could be from the fruit?

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=2457&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2457&ppuser=628)

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=2459&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2459&ppuser=628)

The fruit will never ripen on the plant because someone will cut them down while still very green. Guess I will have to wait for the pup to grow and fruit to find out. But I am so impatient!!!!

My Rose pups like crazy.

Ice cream was divided yesterday, planting new areas of the yard with it.

Also divided a NO ID red banana, broke it off just above the corm but hope there is enough corm still attached to get it going. There was one root still on! Maybe it'll continue to grow up from the corm that broke off as well as grow new roots from the small amount that was still attached to the pup. It was about a 4' pup with a lot of green leaves, so let's see what happens.
This ever happen to anyone here? Break off the pup at the base when trying to cut it off? It was a real bummer... I hope it survives.

Thanks Jon for that. What do you say in regards to wind in that case?
Do yours get shredded or are they protected from gusts?

pitangadiego
05-14-2007, 12:29 AM
Shredded leaves are not an issue - as long as they are green there are productive. Skinny bananas just need propping. Here are the pix of my folded Pisang Ceylon, from winds in mid January 2007. It landed on another plant, which kept the fold to less that 90 degrees, and kept it from breaking off completely. They should be ripe this month.

Today was a good day! I finally got my Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannaensis in the ground. Dug a very large bed for it, considering its traveling habit. Can't wait to see how big it gets this year. It already has about five feet of pseudostem. When I removed the pot (it was severely rootbound!), I found three monstrous rhizomes that had migrated to the bottom of the pot. There was hardly any room for soil, lol! I've actually considered installing one of those bamboo barriers for it, but I'm just going to let it do its thing this year. If it turns out to be very cold-hardy (fingers crossed!), then I probably will next year.

I planted my Musa 'Helen's Hybrid' today, after almost killing it once again. I accidentally let it dry out, and the dry south winds and 93F heat today took its toll. A few wilted leaves, a couple of them a bit burnt, but it will look fine in a few weeks now that it's in the ground. It was also severely potbound. Meant to plant it out weeks ago, but you know how that goes!

Hey, I'm two for two! Maybe I'll get another one planted tomorrow.

I have several Tall Orinocos that should provide me with fruit this summer. Maybe my Raja Puri also.

bigdog
06-12-2007, 09:45 PM
Never mind with the Raja Puri, lol. The whole thing just toppled over from rot at the base. I'm through with it after this year!

Today (actually yesterday) I planted my Musa thomsonii. I've been growing it in shade for the last month +, and the leaves turned a really nice dark green, and it started growing much better also. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a spot in the yard with full shade, so I found a spot where it would get late afternoon shade at least. Here's what it looked like in mid-May:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3010&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3010&ppuser=49)

And a few days ago, just before planting outside:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=3293&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3293&ppuser=49)

Right now, it is my most beautiful Musa, IMHO. The leaves keep that very dark red color on the undersides for a good while, the pseudostem is multi-colored and waxy, and that last leaf almost looks like an elephant ear (ok, that's a bit of a stretch). Hope it makes it through the winter!

Is this a known problem with Rajapuri, or did you just have bad luck with it? I have a large one that I hope to fruit this season and a younger one just put in the ground that's growing happily.

My Raja puri did the same thing as bigdog's. Last year, it was among my healthiest & fastest growing bananas. The pseudostem was over ten feet. I was sure it would fruit this year. When it didn't start growing this spring, I started cutting it back. Although the pseudostem was firm, it was rotten in the center, all the way to the ground. Its pups are doing just fine, though, & the biggest one is already over 5 ft. tall.

That Musa thomsonii really is amazing. It almost looks artificial!

Bonheur
06-13-2007, 06:35 PM
I wish I knew why it rotted. Unfortunately, it's not the first time. It's also happened with some of my Ice Creams, some tall Orinocos, & both of my Williams Hybrids. It's always only affected the tallest plants, never the pups. Our winters here are erratic, with temps ranging from the 70's & 80's to the 20's & back again many times throughout the winter. The bananas break dormancy numerous times & start growing vigorously, only to be hit with a hard freeze. When spring finally arrives, some have lost a bit of pseudostem, but recover quickly. But 1 or 2 will be rotten in the middle, all the way to the ground (but the corm & pups are unaffected). Since they were actively growing only a month or two earlier, the rot must happen quickly. I don't know if the cause of my rot is the same as others with more "normal" climates. Perhaps Gabe has an answer?

After re-reading bigdog's post, he said his was rotten at the base. It may not have extended through the middle of the p-stem.

Sorry to get off-topic.

bigdog
06-13-2007, 06:54 PM
Yeah, mine was rotten in the middle also. Happened last year also. And I am storing them under the house for the winter. I have the same problem with Ice Cream, although I got one Ice Cream to come through with no rot in the middle. Only had one Tall Orinoco do it to me this year though.

To answer your question, Mike, I have read the same problem from many different people, so I think we can conclude that it is a common problem with Raja Puri.

My Raja did not rot to the ground after being stuck in the garage for the winter. I did have 4 others that did though. All but my dwarf red made comebacks. Dwarf red is gone I'm sure. The other 3 have sent up 6-8 pups around where the rotted PS was. It's really pretty cool looking, but lost several feet of growth on each plant. I'm guessing a good way to get tons of pups is to cut off the main PS at ground level but I've not tried this on a healthy one.

Over the past three days. I took about 500 plants in trays from Agri-start and potted each one of them with the help of my 7 yr old daughter. Also put 400 seeds in trays from Banana - Tree.

Its a lot less work sitting and ordering from the pretty pictures - than mixing the dirt ( roughly 1/4 potting soil, 1/4 bark or peat moss, 1/4 perlite, and 1/4 whatever was in the pots from when I planted pecans - the rejects)

Some of these plants are 6" high - I wonder if i can take them outside in direct sun ( south texas).

The varieties are African Rhino Horn ( hmm Im on the coast and its windy so this might not have been a great choice), Red Inholene, Mysore , Hua moa, Cordaba, Ice Cream.

If only my rabbit were still alive to see this...

Thanks to the advise of follow growers, I repotted. The plant leafs were wilting. After being directed to a help forum, which indicated that perhaps there was too much water. Repotted the bananas adding some perlite. Will keep an eye to see if this help. Next bunch will be potted with plenty of perlite for better drainage. Sure am glad to have been directed to this site. I hope this form is as cold-hardy as the two other M. basjoo (regular and shakalin) that have survived winter in my garden

I just potted a 'Truly Tiny' into one of my hydro pots. I had been waiting for a pup to get large enough to take off and it finally made it. I have several 'Truly Tiny' and 'Little Prince' in pots that I have been dividing and now have one of each in the hydro.

My larger plants, "Gran Nian" and "Dwarf Orinco" were potted up to the Earthbox's a few weeks ago and are doing great.

This is the story of how a Banana saved my life today .

I'm excited , my Siam Rubys came in today from Stokes ! Wee-Hoo !! I had ordered them almost a month ago from PDN but they wouldn't ship because of the heat. Being a little slow, it took me that long to finally cancel the order and get them from Stokes instead. I should have got them from there in the first place as it's just down the interstate from here and the shipping would be easier on the plants. It's just that I was browsing the PDN site and was overwhelmed by plant-lust when I saw the Siam Ruby ( especially at $35 ). So like a little kid at Christmas, I didn't sleep a wink last night and ended up sleeping in a lawn chair on the carport, waiting for the UPS man to show up. That guy is a burglar in his spare time, he's the only person who can approach my house without my dogs going nuts, plus he has a bad habit of leaving stuff on my steps without knocking or anything. No way were my Ruby Babies going to sit in that hot box on the steps for even a second ! So I put my feet up ,got as comfortable as possible and settled in to wait at 7:30 a/m . The UPS guy never comes before 2 p/m but I wanted to be ready in case maybe today was different .....In all the excitement I forgot to eat all day. ( I wear an insulin pump)So the Rubies finally show up at about 2:30. I mixed the media for the Rubys and ended up not liking it, too much peat, so I made up a new batch. In the meantime, I'm sweating like a pig( it was Africa hot outside) and very dizzy(as usual on the dizziness). I suffer from very ,very, bad Vertigo. On good days I only fall five or six times. Anyway, I excuse the dizziness and sweating as that. I finally get the Rubys planted just right and now it's starting to get dark and everything looks like someone is playing with the light switch. I know what that means! I ripped off the insulin pump and ran(stumbled) into the house. I grabbed a bunch of Bananas and a jar of honey off of the counter on my way to the ground. Lucky for me I got a Banana and a good swig of honey down before I went out. I woke up later with a splitting headache ,and Scooby licking my face. The other two dogs were lying beside me,guarding me. So ,what's the first thing I did when I got up ? I went to go check on the Rubies of course ! LOL!

And that's my story of how a Banana saved my life today !

Okay, I'm probably the first fiend in IBS history to acquire two Ae Ae pups from different sources in one month. I'm not too sure my first small pup will make it and I wanted to increase my chances of making it through this winter. Stokes did a fantastic job of packing this pup and it has a nice root system. I didn't feel right crowding these royal roots into a 5 gallon pot so I put it up in a "15 gallon" pot. It's so pretty that I even think it won my wife's and son's approval (and my son has been calling me "weird" lately). LOL

Planted Dwf Namwah and 2nd Red Iholene (varig) from potted pups. Set them high as they are in the hurricane river zone near the roadway. If you saw the water level I got from Katrina you would know what I mean. Hope they establish themselves ok for next year.

Cold as heck right now - 69 deg F. Still using the pool though when breaking a sweat digging holes. So is the Bananimal, Chloe - she loves it. The garden is next with emphasis on "hairloom" tomatoes.

When the gardening is done I'm going back to snook fishing - they are on the beach right now shooting through the troughs 10 feet from shore. Just another day in paridise.

Oh yeah, saw the neighborhood bobcat last night stalking the outside of the fence - hope it doesn't smell the dwf orinoco and goldfinger flowers. The bees and wasps sure do.

Well - I'm not very experienced with growing them in pots - but I would think that if your winters are warm enough to keep the plant growing over the winter, it wouldn't hurt to pot into a bigger pot. I think that is what I would do - especially as nanas are greedy feeders, it is possibly hungry too although it looks good. Lets see what the others think?

It won't grow much over the winter, however it would be good to pot it up into a 1-gallon pot similar to that black pot you have there in the picture if for nothing more than to provide more soil mass to help moderate temperature and moisture changes a bit. The smaller pot will dry out much faster too with that large nanner, making your work more. A larger pot will stay hydrated and increase the time between waterings.

Remember, nanners don't like wet feet - even more, they don't like cold wet feet. Keep it moist over the winter but just so - not wet. It'll grow some but it's fastest growth will begin this Spring when the days get longer and things warm up a bit.

Be well,
Mike

I just transplant my baby as Mike said.
I can breath now but the roots are so rootbound that there seemed not to have any soil anymore.
I painstakingly untangled the roots one by one and spread them evenly to a one gallon pot.
I used warm water in the process.
Thanks again.

Oh, yes I learned that process from another thread, the citrus forum.
For years I always advised not to disturb the roots as much as possible but when I see that the roots are very much rootbound, I untangle them very carefully so as not to damage their root hairs.

Banana roots are disposable - don't worry. They shoot out roots that last for a while and then are discarded for fresh roots. Their strength lays in their corm - so long as that's intact, what happens to the roots doesn't matter. You may experience some leaf wilt - but those can be cut off or you can bag the plant if it's small enough to keep humidity high until new roots form. When I plant a pup, I usually cut the top off anyway so existing leaves don't pull energy away from root production, but that's just my preference. When repotting, I typically don't bother messing with the root-ball - the new roots will poke right thru and out into the fresh soil as the old roots are discarded. Just keep in mind - the corm is king - all else can be replaced.

Be well,
Mike

Everybody has its own theory how to grow their plants. None is wrong. One way or another the plants will seek how she can live. It will try to survive all its own. I used to do cut the top off depending how much root damage I made. It all depends on the situation.
I am doing what I learned how to transplant my citrus and I applied the same to my bananas.
It seemed to work well.

I used to think that I can't grow cherries in my yard because as I go around the city of Salinas, I did not see any single cherry tree. Or bananas. But look at my cherries. They were so full of sweet cherries that last year, one major branch broke because of heavy fruiting.
So what can I say to you. Just try it. You'll be surprise.
I used to look at the chill requirements and abide by those. Not any more.
So I said to myself, what can I lose?

Correction when I say I don't have luck on Bing Cherries.
What I meant was I was not successful grafting the Bing cherries in both my Stella and Prince Ranier.
I tried many grafts on persimmons, citrus, apples, plums, you name it and I was above 90% successful.

Now LOL the next question where can I find a Fugi apple yearling? I would love to give it a try.

I got my trees from a local garden center and they carry trees from Dave Wilson Nurseries http://www.davewilson.com/

He sells trees grafted on rootstocks that require less hours of chilling and are more desease resistant than the Fuji rootstock. I have 5 different apples, 2 different cherries, 5 different peaches, 5 different nectarines, 2 different apricots, 2 different pears, and an aprium.

The cherries will need another cherry as a pollinater and some varieties won't pollinate well with others kinds. This site can help http://extension.missouri.edu/explore/agguides/hort/g06001.htm

Good luck!

Thanks for the welcome. Our growing season is close, but just a little short for most fruiting bananas. I am trying the 3 varieties mentioned in an attempt to actually "eat" a banana grown here. :-). Stokes Tropicals is right down the road, so I will be opening my experimentation more on the banana side. Got 3 acres so why not.

Before you listen to them that say you can't get fruit from nanners in Zone 7, give this thread a gander:
http://www.bananas.org/showthread.php?t=310

You indeed can get nanners without a greenhouse. It takes a bit of work, but it's possible. Of course, don't plant your new nanner in the ground just yet - plant it out, if you want, in the Spring and give it a good year's growth. Then dig it up before the first hard freeze comes, and stow it in a cool place that stays fairly reliably around 55-57F and more often than not it'll overwinter there just fine. There is a percentage of loss - so get a few more growing in your patch.

Have fun,
Mike

cookie, make sure when you plant your babies that you do it in a well draining potting MIX. if the dirt is to heavy it will hold to much water and your babies roots could rot. wasnt sure if you had knew about the soil for drainage. dont want your babies to have wet feet. it you have questions about the soil post a note and the good people here can tell you their preferences for their soil.:0521:

If I can spark my husbands interest in it, we already have what could be the fish tank on our back deck. A few years ago he built what I lovingly refer to as his "red-neck" hot tub. A small stock tank with an old swimming pool pump hooked up to the jets he installed with the deck around it. NO he never uses it... LOL

there wont be too many critters to get into them...the outside cats kill everything that moves. no worries there. my concern is the neighbors kids. my yard is posted and ive asked him nicely( very nicely- to the point it almost made me sick...) 'to keep his sweet little adorable children on their side of the yard', ok no problem..not five minutes later they were back in my yard stomping on my daylilies that cost a small fortune, while he was walking around in his yard on the cell phone. so this year im not going to ask politely, im gonna be very nasty and hateful. i will tell him if he dosent keep his kids out of my yard he will be replacing everything that they damage. then i will call the law. :D. i also have to see if my fav. gh has my crown of thorns plants. ill plant them on the property line and dare them to try and step over them. lol. if you know what they are and have ever been stuck by one, they really hurt and they dont stop hurting even when the thorn is pulled out.

Finally he turns to me really frustrated and said " Lady please tell your husband to pay the bill today!I cant get at it because of these sticker bushes! I Laughed and laughed!
Even the cats wouldnt go near the sticker bushes! Now i have a white picket fence around the front, I had the bushes taken out! But i want to plant some kind of sticker(thorn) plant on the back deck to climb up to the upper deck, to make sure no heathens can climb up and get US!! LOL

Today I planted the years second batch of seeds. I find planting in batches works as insurance for thermostat failures, power outages, the cats sitting on top of the propagator etc.
Anyway, I split the seeds into 2 lots and have soaked for a couple of days in pre-boiled water in 2 ways.
1 batch in GA3 gibberellic acid and another batch in cape smoke primer. I'm then planting up in fine mix coco fibre with about 15% perlite. the seeds then go in sealed plastic containers (from the local chinese restaurant) like tupperware.
All in the propagator, heated coil with probe sensor 33C daytime / 15C nights.

Thanks Richard. I forgot to write Kandrian and atemoya. Those are in addition to the ones I planted. I have just one more room for either dwarf orinoco or dwarf cavendish. You see I planted them at the plat that I was working on. And before nighttime I put clear plastics around just in case it gets pretty cold. And most of them I put plastic pots cover if they are small enough and some of them Christmas lights if they are too big.
I am babying them now. As for the soil I got me a truck load of compost and here's my proportion. 4:1:1 (compost, 1/4"rocks, small bark chips and shovel fulls of horse manure. Once they are established I have a very good fertilizer for them.
What would you plant Riichard dwarf orinoco or dwarf cavendish?
The plat will be protected from the elements once I am finish.
Also, I did not plant a new cherry tree but I gave it a new life.
That tree used to be planted atop a concrete floor on a wine barrel. Last year I broke the concrete so the roots can penetrate the soil underneath. Today I saw it to be full of tall grass around out of neglect and the soil were so dry and the tree appeared to be stunted.
I built a wood partition around the tree and fill it up with my mix after I pull all the weeds out..
I hope she will give me a lot of fruit as she did last year. And boy, were they delicious.
And here's her picture for just a branch:

The banana expert in your neighborhood is AnnaJW (http://www.bananas.org/member-annajw.html) and I see Dwarf Orinoco is one of her naners. I plan to grow it too, and skip Dwarf Cavendish.

Thanks, Maestro. That's a good decision because dwarf cavendish seems to be temperamental as far as temperature variance is concerned. My dwarf orinoco is so green and healthy and did not brown a single leaf during this winter.

New to the forum and new to bananas.
I planted 1 Ice Cream and 1 Golden African. I have an ornamental red banana (don't know the type) that has come back for the last 3 years, but I'm hoping to grow some edible bananas in Savannah, GA.

Your office looks like my bathroom did this past winter. Most of the plants are outside or planted now. I had to bring some Christmas palm seedlings in last night and the wife said 'Your not bringing all that stuff back in are you!!".:2725:

5 pisang ceylons babies that came out of a 25 gal pot stuck in the back of my local nursery. Got it for $30 because they didn't know what to do with it. The mother plant had come and gone, and they never sold it. Does anyone know much about this species? I can't find too much on the net about it.
