Goldfinger has thin red border/line on leaves and down the petiole
Thanks! It's hard to see if the photo, but I just checked and there is a thin red line at the edge of the leaves. As far as down the petiole, do you mean the same line on the edge of the leaf continues to the edge of the petiole or do you mean the petiole itself in red in the middle or on the back side like some others?

Rob, it looks like my SH-3640 but not my FHIA-01.
My SH-3640 has red in the petiole canal but the FHIA-01 did not have any red.
Check the photo gallery, you might find evidence that it should or shouldn't.
Good Luck and hope it is a FHIA-01.
Thanks, and I've seen those GRIN pictures too which helped me rule out that the other 2 supposed GFs weren't. It does seem like the male bud is quite distinctive so if not before, at least I should be able to ID it then.
I also have a "likely" SH-3640 which coconut Chris told me he was told was a Nang Faya. Whatever it is, it's quite different from this possible GF, and it has a less pronounced red line on the leaf edge which is more prominent on the petiole edge but with no red in the petiole canal.

I look at GRIN and there was no red on the pups, and I also looked at your photos and did not see any red.

I remember the red outline when the plants were small but I also remember goldfinger being a dark green when it matures. Who knows ,

Great shots, all about the same stage that mine is, and yeah I see that it does look more like the SH-3640. The galleries were sort of helpful, as it's hard to know which were real or not. And from other photos I've seen it does seem like it's totally green when mature. If mine turns out to be an SH-3640 then I won't be too upset. This was a TC that started life at Agristarts, and I don't see it available on their site currently, or know if they have sold TCs of it recently.

Another Fe'i. No idea what type. Purchased locally from one of my regular sources. He said he has 3 types but doesn't know the names of any of them. I'm hoping it's different than the Aiuri and the other unknown one I have.

I got this supposedly ice cream variety from the local flea market. It about 4 feet tall and got it for $8. If it is or not, at $8 bucks it was a bargain
*vent on* Wish there was a real farmer's market around here; I miss talking with growers and not buyers from the same operation who then mark it up but don't post prices because then they would sell less. Huh? You want $2 for a quart of green tomatoes; post it. If your neighbor wants $1.50 for the exact same thing, I will probably buy from them. If neither of you have signage telling me what you expect me to spend, I will walk away empty handed and not come back. But tell me about your farm and engage me and I'll spend the $2 and be your customer next week and next. A farmer's market is where farmer's sell their wares; a market is where vendors do. There is a vast difference. *vent off*
Wow! What a find! I'm really new at this stuff but now I'm wondering if I need to buy exercise equipment for my bananas.
I feel your pain. I love going to farmers markets, flea market, and garage sales. I was not going to buy it but the old man in the stand was very talkative and he knew alot of plants. He alot of varieties, avocados, peaches, guava, and etc. He had it for $15 but after a few bargaining I got it for $8. Luckily that's all the cash I had on me. I will soon return to his stand and buy other plants.
I got them in a workout plan, feeding steroids, and rain water. Bulk them up!!

Tony, I still have a descendent of the Goldfinger I got from you several years ago. It fruited while I was away in Afghanistan. Its the only banana that I've had fruit for me yet. Your right. It has a pup with the red edges on the leaf and petiole and the mother with the red less prominent if there at all. It' not nearly as noticeable as the pink on my Musa "Florida", but it' s there.
BTW, What happened to your Goldfinger?

I just potted a Musa Acuminata “Colla” received from my friend in Thailand a couple days ago. It has been under a metal halide light for several days but no sign of chlorophyll in the p-Stem. This is very strange. I’ve never seen this before. It’s supposed to be yellow and green. I’m interested to see if it stays all white.

Seth --- if it's still warm at night stick that pup outside in direct sunlight. Should respond well. Water well once until pot feels lighter when you pick it up.
Also would be good to surgically remove the top 5 inches of pstem leaving just the cigar. Do one layer at a time.

Last weekend,I ground planted my 'Red Iholene' and a Musa "Cuba".
Musa 'Red Iholene'. I was very happy with how well this one handles shade and how much faster it has been compared to other varieties in cooler weather last year, growing through the coldest part of the year despite having leafs damaged from frost now and then, that I decided to reward it with a spot in the ground. Here it is!
http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/Kostas_G/Pyrgos%20Garden/null_zps91acc1f5.jpg
Musa "Cuba". This is an unknown variety from Cuba that supposedly produces seedless fruits. Seems like a Fe'i to me in everything but it's not big enough to check for sap color. I ground planted it to help it grow faster hopefully and find out what it is soon! I love Fe'i but all of mine died in a cold and wet winter despite being in the ground. They rotted on site... Hope this one is a Fe'i but has better future in the protected spot I chose for it.

Great to hear that Rob,thank you very much!!! :woohoonaner: Fe'i do have a distinctive look and feel on them when you have grown them before! I think its easier to mix them with a wild species than with other desert varieties. What have you found their main problems are while growing them and what do they particularly like? This one has barely grown during the past months, just 4-5 leafs I think in its pot,but has a huge corm from what I was told,so maybe it considered its pot too small. Hope it likes its spot now! :)

I have had 1 just over a year and it has been slower growing than some and nowhere near fruiting. So I don't know much about them yet from personal experience. From what Gabe has said and I've ready elsewhere, they are more truly tropical than many other bananas and Hawaii is at the edge of the tropics. My oldest one did not like our drought summer, despite daily waterings.

Any suggestions, remove or let it ride?If you have the space, let them grow. They look dry or perhaps too wet (see note below) or hungry. I'm a weirdo about potting unhappy plants so I'd put them into nice big pots with some good dirt then feed and water them as needed so I had control over their destiny.
Note: I have only 1 in the ground where I am; she's a DC from Lowes purchased on Mother's Day. I originally planted her where I thought she'd be happy; she drooped horribly. I moved her 6' to the right to a bit drier area; despite no care from me her leaves are now 4' long and they're about 4' or more over my head. (BTW, I'm not a dwarf; I stand about 5'4" in my doddering old age. She's become a landmark in a neighborhood where the few 3 year old bananas people have planted are 3' tall with 1' leaves at best.)

I don't know how to differentiate Cavendish and Gros Michel at that age. All the pictures online aren't very helpful. I think it may be a Gros Michel clone, but who knows. It makes a long fruit, and that is what I am after.

Dig a million dollar hole for a five dollar plant.
A rototiller makes my job so much easier when I plant Basjoos.

My first real, confirmed Ele Ele is doing great so was time to remove a pup, now planted on the left. Perhaps this more shady spot will help bring out the black.
Kru has been finicky. Never flowers, but never quite totally dies either. They get about 5 feet tall and just stop or rot. Clear nematode damage to the roots. Hoping this one will do better after 10% bleach solution treatment. Pictured on the right.

Finally got power back yesterday after 9 days so it was time to get to work on my new lot.
These massive bunch of very large fe'i were at the farmers market today, so I bought some and a keiki.

This was given to me by someone who found it in a gulch in the Hamakua region and therefore he's been calling it Hamakua. We'll see eventually.

Got this from a friend of a friend in November
Don't know the variety looks to "red" for a Mysore

This is how she looks today

Looks like she's going to make it
My dogs liked the taste of a ??Goldfinger pup I got years ago. They almost destroyed the plant, so I put it in a large rope bucket and left it alone (first blue bucket in picture). I removed the largest pup and put it in the ground today. We shall see if it really is a Goldfinger banana plant. :banana_ba
