I've pulled all the plants out of my basement now except for some plumeria; they'll come out when I make room on the patio. Planted my huge E. glauca (7+ft. tall and have to use a dolly to move it). My Siam Rubies are still in pots, as are a sikkim and another two that have lost labels. Put in the ground a E. Maurelli, Orinoco, zebrina, double dwarf cav (the plant is two separate p-stems). Additionally planted a host of ee's and cannas from the basement. Need to get my camera connection replaced before I can post more pics. The basjoo clumps are pushing up p-stems all over; they didn't mind the past winter at all even with no protection.

Planted three Dahlias bought yesterday

A lot was planted early march but due to no sun its taking an absolute age to appear, signs of growth but painfully slow.

I bought a yellow and a purple Zantedeschia to plant out today . I have been admiring those for two weeks and yesterday took the plunge.

I also planted a thai black in the ground. I had an ensete Maurelli in its spot, but I dug it up and potted it because I just dont think its going to get very tall this year. My thai black was crawling along last year, but so far this year its growing great so I think it deserves to be in the ground. My ice cream banana finally decided to start growing so I do think it has a chance to be a very nice sized plant by fall since its already 5 feet tall.

"Belle" from Jon (pitangadiego) and "maybe Mona Lisa" from Tony (sunfish). Kept them in pots for 5 weeks so they had healthy, new roots before I put them in the ground. Great roots on both. It's probably an unnecessary step, but it keeps me from worrying about overwatering a newly barerooted plant in the ground.

That seems to be the common thread that we all share- where to squeeze in another one (or three) bananas, etc. :ha:

I have to stop buying more. I have 26 banana varieties at the moment plus a whole host of citrus, other tropical fruit (mango, papaya, etc.), palms, cannas, flowering vines, heliconias, Alocasia, Caladium, Jade vines, orchids. I need to stop! My wife says its going to be either her or the plants - and the plants are wining.:08:

Hi,

in the future I will stay in Brazil for 4 to 5 months every year, from November to February, I'm partly retired and have one part time job from March to October every year, it is better for me because of my health. Yesterday my friend Helton from Frutas Raras visited me and brought me many banana pups and many fruit trees.

Today I planted:
Musa ornata x velutina from Anestor
Musa thomsonii
Musa sikkimensis
Musa itinerans
Musa microcarpa
Musa mannii
Musa Figo alias Orinoco
Musa unknown from very large seeds
Musa unknown wild species, probably one form of itinerans
Ensete ventrichosum

Tomorrow and in the next days I will plant the rest:
Musa Mysore (is very good here and one even fruits, therefore 2 more new pups, now total 4 plants)
Musa Figo alias Orinoco (one specimen more and transplant other bad grown 2 specimens to grow better, total 4 plants)
Musa Pacovão
Musa Terra
Ensete ventrichosum (two are already planted today, the third will be planted tomorrow or in the next days)
Musa itinerans "Blue Java"

I gave Helton one pup from Musa basjoo for Frutas Raras. He will propagate and grow to try to produce seeds.

Best wishes from Brazil

This week I planted an 'ele 'ele, Praying Hands, Monkey Fingers, with a FHIA-18 tomorrow and an African Rhino Horn on the way. Still just a few left on my list to get and running out of room in the yard!
Also ended up planting a Dwarf Namwah, which I also tried for the first time, and think it might be my new favorite, along with a green Kru, because the red version I haven't been able to find. Any time of year is a good time to plant here in Hawaii. It's been a wet winter so far after 2 dry ones so everything has been growing like crazy. Also tried my first Awak, Kluay Khai, Cardaba, Hua Moa, and another the seller called Berry, but who knows what that really was. There were about 10 ripe varieties to try at my farmers' market.

HEY Mr. GEENFIN.... You got them in a EBB and FLO SYSTEM ?

No, I do constant flood. The water level is a couple of inches below the surface of the gravel. (I use an industrial strength blower to aerate the water so the plants don't drown or rot.)

If you click on that photo, you can see that there appears to be a disease of some sort on the Raja Puri's leaves. Is that Black Sigatoka?

I cut off the infected leaves and burned them off-site. Will that solve the problem or is the plant hopelessly infected? Should I just throw out the whole plant and hope it hasn't infected any other plants yet?

I just see damage to the leaves that left black areas. Physical damage (e.g., from getting rattled around in the box during shipping) will cause black spots. I don't think you have a disease problem, from what I see. Also seems unlikely given that these were disease-free, tissue cultured plants, that were most likely grown in a greenhouse.

My concern was that, while these plants arrived at the retailer's nursery as disease-free tc's several months ago, they have been sitting in the retailer's greenhouses for months...and these greenhouses pump in a lot of outside air...and right outside these greenhouses are probably many, many large adult plants that could harbor and transmit diseases.

But I'm glad you and Richard don't think it looks like anything nasty. You guys have a heck of a lot more experience than I do, so that certainly helps dial down the panic :)

Being a first-time banana grower is apparently like being a first-time parent. ("OMG the banana plant has a blemish--does it have sigatoka?!?" = "OMG the baby's crying--does it have ebola?!?")

This is what it looked like after I washed off the roots and stuck it in the gravel grow bed (it's in the upper right; you can see the Truly Tiny in the bottom left and the Dwarf Cavendish in the upper left that I recently got from Wellspring Gardens...and about 25 little Red Lady papaya plants coming up in the opening off of seeds from Aloha Seed):

Anyone have a guess as to how old my new SDC is?

Also, if the 3" tall DC in the upper left of the middle pic grows well, about how long will it take to get as big as the SDC currently is? (just looking for a rough estimate)

Hard to say, depends on whether it was a TC plant (almost certainly) or a pup, and the growing condition. At least months old.

Given how easy it is to get Dwarf Brazilian fruits in Hawaii, that seems like a reasonable tradeoff!

Some new plants came in today from Florida Hill.&nbsp; I've been trying to build up a collection of the smallest dwarfs to test in my tunnel greenhouse, and FH was the only business I could find that was currently shipping tc's of Zan Moreno and Little Prince (since I'm temporarily constrained on space, I specifically want tc's right now for their smaller starting size and slower initial growth).&nbsp; And of course I then had to get a Gluay Kai and a pineapple plant, too, to take advantage of their 4-for-1 shipping deal lol.

When I arrived at the post office to pick them up, the postmaster apologized and said that the package had been crushed in transit and looked terrible.&nbsp; She was right--the package looked like it had been bent in half in multiple directions, and a fairly large hole had been torn in one end (big enough to push a golf ball through).&nbsp;

I was anticipating some pretty bad plant damage, but they seem to have survived their ordeal.&nbsp; One of the plants had gotten too cold (it doesn't help when USPS rips big holes in the packaging) and had a blackened leaf that I removed, and another plant had a broken leaf, but all of the p-stems were intact and the plants all seemed to have healthy roots.&nbsp; The US Postal Service had tried its best to kill them, but the little naners were just too tough :)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PYvm6ZE3C54/T1VtsltNQzI/AAAAAAAAAzw/nByvGNE3j1k/s1600/SAM_2721.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PYvm6ZE3C54/T1VtsltNQzI/AAAAAAAAAzw/nByvGNE3j1k/s320/SAM_2721.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CgtGbguijt8/T1Vt6qNZ4PI/AAAAAAAAAz4/Ufigctf7Kvk/s1600/SAM_2724.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CgtGbguijt8/T1Vt6qNZ4PI/AAAAAAAAAz4/Ufigctf7Kvk/s320/SAM_2724.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XqfRWP3W7oc/T1VuIM1zZjI/AAAAAAAAA0A/PFfwjJSAHJg/s1600/SAM_2727.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XqfRWP3W7oc/T1VuIM1zZjI/AAAAAAAAA0A/PFfwjJSAHJg/s320/SAM_2727.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Here's a pic to show some perspective on size.&nbsp; The package was sitting on a blue milk crate which was itself sitting over the top of a 5-gallon bucket.&nbsp; The four other banana plants in this pic with 16-18" p-stems (30-36" tall overall) arrived from Florida Hill 5 weeks ago with 7" p-stems (about 12" tall overall).&nbsp; They pushed out about a leaf a week throughout February and seem to be accelerating.&nbsp; Pretty cool :)
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eQ0oqIhHrhI/T1VuVx0_ZYI/AAAAAAAAA0I/I3pufpFiteM/s1600/SAM_2728.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eQ0oqIhHrhI/T1VuVx0_ZYI/AAAAAAAAA0I/I3pufpFiteM/s320/SAM_2728.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

And here are the new additions after being planted in the grow bed.&nbsp; If we use the Truly Tiny that is in the very center of this pic as our reference point, then the Zan Moreno is at 3 o'clock, the Gluay Khai is at 1 o'clock, and the Little Prince is at 9 o'clock.&nbsp; [The beautiful plant with wine marks at 10:30 is a Dwarf Cavendish, and the potted plants (along with the little plants in the center of the pic) are Red Lady papaya.&nbsp; Green beans are at the bottom and left, butternut squash is at the top, and there are a couple of pepper plants in the bottom right.]

Planted my Saba and Ice cream banana in the ground this past week! So far they are off to a good start. Saba already has 3 pups (Im getting scared of this plant now, its going to be a giant soon!) and my ice cream banana has 1 pup (this one is a pretty moderate grower, not as fast as saba but the leaves are bigger so they need more room).

Here's my Saba! I got a really nice Alocasia "Stingray" at a local nursery today (finally selling summer annuals here!) and I planted it between the saba and the ginger. Hopefully they wont interfere with each other!

Got a huge 6 foot tall Ensete and planted it in the ground to the left of my saba and brugmansia (see the pic 2 posts below, its not in that pic but would be just to the left of the area that is in the pic). I'll take a pic of it soon! Im very excited to see how big it gets this year.
Any ideas how tall a 6 foot Ensete (3-4 foot psudeostem) will get by October with days in the 80s from May - September with 90s common in July and August? End of the growing season is usually early-mid November, lately it has been more like late November!

Planted a couple of decent sized sago palms someone dug up and took to the dump.:(

One has about a 3 1/2 ft trunk. We'll see if they make it.

EDIT: 6/20/12 Both are still alive one has put off another row of fronds. I think they'll make it!

These are the Pups I transplanted Saturday. There are 3 photos in the gallery showing the source of each type. The new Banana Bed is just outside my window on the North West corner of my house. This will give the plants morning shade, which seems to be working for the other patches and sun all afternoon. I used a mixture of potting soil, mushroom mulch and black cow. Because of a discussion I had with the nurseryman when I was purchasing the supplies, i ripped the plastic bags apart to line the trench before planting the pups. This will keep the nutrients available to the plants much longer, though I did puncture holes to prevent excessive moisture. I'll keep posting photos as my experiment continues... Bwahahaha!

I went to the DUMP :ha:
I know sounds like real fun don't it .. Was removing construction trash, my friend needed someone to share his dump trip . OK so , we drive in all the employes are eating lunch. One takes the $ 35 fee and away we drive to where you toss your garbage.. I looked next to where we are pulled in, I see 10 or 12 Papaya trees cut into pieces and all manor of other stuff piled on them .. BUT my trained eye saw some roots! I jumped over and lifted up some debris and found my TREASUERE of the week .. Yes a small Papaya tree with roots . The dirt was still damp :) I quickly place it in the truck and away we go . ha ha ha I don't know what kind it is and I don't care .. after all it was a freebie.. But but the general length of all the tree trunks I saw I'd guess it is a 10 footer .. So maybe a Hawaiian type ..

Can't plant Gros Michel here in Hawai'i anymore as they soon succumb to Panama Fusarium Wilt. It is too bad as it is a fine dessert variety. We also have problems with Banana Bunchy Top Disease mostly with our Cavendish varieties. There is no hope of eradicating it so we either have to live with it or get rid of all our Cavs and stick to things that are less susceptible such as the two Brazilian varieties that I grow in my own yard.

I planted a pup of this Hawaiian banana that has never been given
a name as far as I, or the collector know. Although many 'nanners
lose their color as they grow, the 2nd photo is from a banana with
about 12 ft of p-stem, so I don't think these lose their color.

<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=46175><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=46175&size=1 border=0></a>

<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=46176><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=46176&size=1 border=0></a>

Unless you know of some others, the only ones I know to exist are the isolated mat where it was found, some in the yard of the guy that collected a pup, and now mine. The gentleman that located it initially is familiar with the ones in the local botanical gardens, and has never seen it in any of them. The fruit is similar to those in the Iholena group, but more tapering on the end. The ones in my friends yard had p-stems that topped out at about 12-14 ft. If anyone has a guess for the ID, please let me know. Here are some links to photos of the mother plant on flickr. The collector calls it musa-2 (since it is un-named), and also has a slightly different one at his place that is partly variegated with what he thinks is an Iholena Lele or something similar that he calls musa-27. Mine shows none of the Lele traits, and should have good reddish color to it.

Yug, it is definitely in the Iholena subgroup. The leaf coloration and shape, as well as the bunch structure are the giveaways. I agree that the very lengthily-pointed fruits seem a bit extreme for known Hawaiian Iholena cultivars. It could be an unknown variety, lost in Hawaiian history and now recovered, or it could fall within the wide phenotypic variation known for, say, Iholena Lele. I'd contact Angela Kepler. She'd be interested and able to pin it down.

Ah, she is connected with the Hawaiian 'nanner book, no? Seems there are a number of books about Hawaiian plants with her name on them. I hope there is a real interest in the plants, and not merely getting one's name on rather pricey books. I've left an email with the UH Press, and will follow up with a call. Even better if I can find a Maui number for her. The co-author is her husband.

Yeah, I like the unusual color pattern, too. If not for that, I may not have even noticed it much. I'd probably have thought it was an Iholena-something with skinny fruit. :waving:

Yes, she is the lead author on the Hawaiian banana book. Take my word as an academic author, there is no big money to made in writing books like hers. I bought in on Amazon for about $60. Given that it weighs about 10 pounds, is nearly 600 pages, has over 1000 beautiful photos, and is the only source of good keys to many banana cultivars and subgroups -- it's a bargain at twice that price! And yes, she has a real passion for the plants. She had been very kind and generous with her time in my communications with her. If you do a bit of internet sleuthing, you can find her direct email address.

Spoke with the lady, and she believes it is an Iholena Lele since from here experience they are somewhat variable. Nice long conversation with her. She also knows the guy I got it from, and she also knows Gabe. Small world.

I guess this would be a red variant with skinny fruit.

(she said she had just spoken to someone from CA on this very same subject... I wonder who that could be? :08: )

Hi Guys

First post here. Im from Australia, north qld in the tropics :).

Planted a blue java today that my wife and I bought from the markets. We have a few other banana plants growing I believe they are lady fingers planted those a couple of months ago and growing really well.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-x4bGLW3auDU/ULCgDNlbQUI/AAAAAAAAApk/qUSop0wc0v8/s640/20121124_181717.jpg

The little one with bricks either side of it previously died so I mowed it over. Couple of weeks later a leaf sprang up.

Truly Tiny. Why is there so little information out there about this cultivar? The information I find seems inconsistent. Some sources say it fruits; others say no. Some say it is a tiny Cavendish; others say it is a tiny Brazilian. Some say the plant is a deeper green and darker stemmed than the similar-sized Little Prince cultivar; others say they are about the same. I love a mystery. I guess I will have 2-3 years of banana observations to find out the truth.http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-f1NZAV4_VJw/UMey3Y1plBI/AAAAAAAACXU/3xmYDi3XesU/s1600/PC080005%2B%2528800x600%2529.jpg

ok I had one one my porch for a few years:) mine produced a bloom in 2 1/2 years I kept it a few more years after that. I don't think a lot if fertilizer is needed for them. I found a few handfuls of compost monthly did best.. I'm South Florida so we have pretty good amounts of sunlight. Where I kept the plant it got only morning sun till about 11 AM then the roof kept it from seeing any direct sunlight. it was a nice medium green and I water every other day . but if it rained it got rain water. 2 inches of wood chips on top of poting soil 15 gallon container

My 3rd attempt at an Ele Ele. I'm pretty sure this one is a real one since it was dug up just for me from Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden where they have Ele Ele and other Hawaiian varieties. My 1st attempt was a TC from Aloha Tropicals--no idea what it really is. My 2nd turned out to be either a Hapai or Sucrier, bought at the Hawaii Breadfruit & Banana festival last Sept.

Planted a Lakatan last week. Helped remove the pup from a mat that was fruiting and could see the clearly rounded bud. I was not interested in getting the Lacatan, or cavendish type, so I wanted to make sure it was the Philippine kind. The little rocks around it are what my "soil" consists of. That and a few years of decayed free mulch.

Me too! Probably more like 2 years. That seems to be typical from pup planting to ripe fruit for me. Have gotten more like 18 months from some TCs. I think I've got maybe 20 varieties in the yard planted in the past year or so that I've never even tried. Next up is the Monkey Fingers that began flowering after 12 months. Next 2 years should mean lots of new fruit that I taste for the first time!

I still have no idea what most of the banana varieties you guys are talking about. I got myself a pup from my neighbor today, its a dwarf something. He recons its a dwarf cavendish of some sort but I recon its a dwarf ducass as they are on the allowed list for the region of australia I live in.

Planted a Gold something today. The seller could not remember if it was Goldfinger or Golden Pillow. I bought both previously from Aloha Tropicals. One is a Namwah, the other is 1000 fingers, and I figure I'll be able to tell which Gold it is since they are quite different. No pictures as it's just a sword sucker with a fat corm.

Haven't quite planted it yet but today I purchased a Mai'a 'Upehupehu, a Hawaiian Iholena type which is very rare. It's in the Kepler & Rust book on bananas in Hawaii. From the Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook, HI. I'm sort of on a mission to get any rare Hawaiian variety I can, since I'm in a BBTV free area (as far as I know) where they have a good chance of surviving.

04-11-2013, 05:37 PM
What's different about 'Upehupehu is that the fruit are more round like a maoli type, so they look quite different. Supposed to be a good dual purpose banana that tastes like other Iholenas.

The only Iholena I've fruited is "Red Iholene" which is a mutation of Iholena Lele. It was pretty good tasting that I can recall.

Nick, I figured you had a good reason, I was just curious to know what is was.

Good luck with the FHIA-02. You seem to do well with all of them, so I'll be interested to see what you think of this one. It has been a slow grower for me, but that's true of all the varieties that I grow that have only A genes. They seem to need more warmth to thrive than my climate provides.

Yes, NK Lago Farms is my farm and it's mostly for fruit but i am expanding the nursery side of things. But, its hard to beat $15 for a 3 gallon plant, unless of course you are buying suckers from me. I have tried before to get fhia 21 AND FHIA 23 from Don and I get no response. I might use a straw buyer to see if i could get a different answer.

You don't ship fruit by any chance do you? Because I'm having a darn hard time trying to find someone who ships banana fruit that isn't Cavendish, normal Plantains, or Ninos.

If you are really in Washington, it might be difficult. I've got some Goldfingers that should be ready at the beginning of May, it might be worth trying. The main issue is the transit time, and the temperatures.

I'd have to eat them both every day for a while to decide. When I had them, I went for them first since they were something different. Definitely more complex flavors. I look forward to having them more frequently. DBs are still my regular daily banana that I usually like to have in the house.

I didn't get a lady finger from you (though you might have given me the finger :ha:), but I do still have all the ones I got from you. The "not Mona Lisa" is putting out a bud right now, and the Dwarf Namwah has already produced some tasty bananas. The rest are still coming along. I think the "probably Manzano" should flower this year, and maybe some others.

I planted my garden on May 25, so hopefully that Mahealani moon will bring me good luck!

I have about 15 banana plants that I planted. They were all brought inside for the winter, so bringing them outside gave them some sunburn and the wind blew many leaves over. I'm excited to see what this year will bring. Last year was a drought, and my garden was pretty disappointing (at least for me).

Far left is a Thai black that is about 8 feet tall. It is 3 years old. The three main ones you see are Ensete maurelii, also 3 years old. The two limp guys by the air conditioner are ice creams, 1 year old. They REALLY didn't like the sun. The little guys up front are a few years old and fully grown. I think they are just the hardware store special. Also a rajapuri, two Thai black babies, a mekong giant, some alocasia, impatients and some hostas.

Yea I'm hoping it'll bloom quick. Last year the main plant bloomed for the first time so I'm hoping this one has a double.

Many believe that the Hawaiians were some of the best Banana farmers ever. So it would be best to do what they did. Best of luck. You did plant it on the best day possible. Aloha

Thanks in advance S.
