Technically not planted yet but the bed is 70% ready. Kept killing them direcly in the ground. Did the conversion this is about 240gallons just above ground. I will loosen the soil so it has a bit more space to roam free.

I didn't plant them today, but a couple days ago I planted two Gros Michel's. One was planted in front of my house, and the other was planted next to the rental house that I manage. I thought it would be nice for our guests to have some great tasting bananas during their vacation here.

I planted a ICE CREAM (Blue Java) today.

A very beautiful, cool tolerant
banana plant with texture and
flavor similar to vanilla ice
cream. This banana tree has
beautiful large leaves and
produces medium bunches of
silvery blue bananas that are
very delicious fresh or cooked.
Mature banana tree height to
12'

1 Glui Kai
1 Ice Cream
1 Siam Ruby
2 Dwarf Orinocos

All recieved as small plants, were pottted up in 1 galon pots so I can easily move them inside if hard frost is predicted this winter.

They will be put out in the ground in spring.

A few weeks back I got a Ensete maurelli (from ebay) and it almost died (im bad with keeping mail order bananas alive I guess). I repotted it, cut all the leaves off and its already pushed up 2 healthy leaves. Next spring I plan on putting it in the ground. Its going to be the first banana I attempted to put in the ground and if it works out well it may have some friends beside it :)

Always nice to get a surprise in the mail. What goes around comes around, hence the Orinoco's showing up. It never hurts to mention what you are looking for even if you can't find them right away. Makes me glad you're happy with them.......not to mention not having to overwinter them:ha:

While I really don't know if I should have bought a banana plant before I learned a lot about them, I just bought this plant from eBay. It's a Baby Musa Basjoo and they say it's growing great and is almost 18 inches tall now.

I can't wait to get started on my banana growing career and I just want all the advice I can get from you experts!

I decided to go ahead and plant my monkey finger, rhino horn, cardaba and glui kai this past weekend. I transplanted my Saim ruby and seperated out the one that reverted to solid lime green, so I can add marginata to my list. Also transplanted cheeka and that lime green nam wah thing, whatever it is.

Two last-of-the-season, 3-ft Ensete Maurellis.

Stumbled on the 1st one, almost literally, shoved against nonbananas, on sale for $13.99.

I looked around for more, hopefully, and found 2 more--one was in pretty bad shape.

Dickered with the help for a discount--both were rung up $10 each.

Neat.

I've been looking all summer, all September, gave up all hope October; I came in today for soil and pots for cannas I got from sandy here, and VOILA!

Keeping them warm and dry under my homemade banana blanky. I added another old, old comforter overhead; they looking pretty comfy in there.

Just in time for our night temps here are below 42, early daytime 45.

Heya!

Well this might not be the right place for this question, but what the heckl! Here it comes.

I ordered a aeae for maybe 3 month ago. It was then about 50cm tall. I placed it in a container with rooting hormone and gave it heat! The soiltemp. is and was about 32 degrees Celsius. As time went by, the top started rotten, inch by inch. I cut the rotten bit off as it moved down towards the soil. Today it was rotten, so only about one inch was fresh above the soil. I thought it was the end of the road and dragged it up, :woohoonaner: There was three large roots and some smaller, :nanadrink:. I guess each of the lager one was about 15 cm long.
So, to my question. What shall I do??? Will it root down to the corm?? Is time the best answer?? Wait or what?
Please help me with my aeae......I will take some pictures of it later and put up here for you all to see!!!!

Hi Maque.

You are correct that this is not the right place for your question. You need help FAST, and I don't think that will happen in this forum. Please ask this in the container grown forum or the health forum. Someone will see it there and offer advice.

Good luck!

I think that the plant may be mislabeled. It looks to me like a regular banana rather than an Ensete. The stocky trunk suggests an SDC. Great buy, regardless. A plant like that size would easily go for $30 in the Seattle area.

I'm so excited to see some sprouts on the musa velutina seeds I planted about a month ago! I planted a couple flats with about 50 seeds each and they are starting to come up! They are in a sunny window on an electric blanket for extra heat. I had plastic lids on one flat because it had been very cloudy. Then last Saturday I was gone and it got sunny. I was sure the seeds had cooked, but those started sprouting first. Now the second flat is starting to sprout too.

I have tried several times with purchased seeds but had no luck. These seeds came from a velutina I've had growing here for 2 years. This was the first time I'd seen the bananas split and show their seeds.

I started another 135 seeds this week and gave some to friends (before the first batch started sprouting). I have about 500 more in the sprouter ready to plant. I gathered the last of the bananas this week (we still haven't had a bad frost). So I'm overrun with velutina seeds and loving it!

If anyone wants some seeds, send me an e-mail for my address to send me a stamped self-addressed envelope and I'll return some seeds until I run out. I hate for them to be wasted.

No problem about the info, Eric. We have a website and my name and address are out there. BUT Harvey makes an excellent point about not posting info about others without their permission!! Thanks, Harvey!

The seeds I've sent out were soaked like tomato seeds, allowing them to ferment somewhat so that they could be more easily removed. Then cleaned, they were transferred to a seed sprouter where they were rinsed daily in a distilled water/peroxide solution to hasten sprouting and eliminate infection.

I know that a LOT of e-bay and other internet sellers make many false claims to sell their products! But some of the seeds I had were sprouting in the sprouter. I did not send those, but planted them in soil immediately. However I would not have been surprised if some of them did sprout in the few days while they were in route to their new homes. (I did send them in a damp plastic bag so they would not dry out.)

I am NOT selling anything on e-bay and never have, although I have made purchases. I know NOTHING about any seller advertising that their seeds may sprout in transit, but I do think it's possible.

I don't know why you say that, all it takes is a little warmth and moisture. Velutina is the weed of the banana family, about as difficult to grow from seeds as marigolds. Before I joined this org and realized that people actually wanted them I always cut the fruit off and threw it away before they popped open and the birds scattered seeds all over the backyard. A year later I'm still finding them coming up.

Garden seedlings --- 4 basil, 1 Thai pepper, 2 flat leaf parsley, and 6 assorted types each of tomato and peppers. The basil and tomato were replacements for frost damaged plants.

Things are looking up. Forcast highs for tomorrow and Fri are 80 and 82F.

Might try fishing in the Indian river Fri if I can get a line in between all the dead fish and manatees. The water is heating up now and they are starting to rise from the bottom and float. What a mess!

I removed almost all of my plants and relocated some to new locations.
Most (except the praying hands) were taken down to the ground with the freeze.

I am not interested in the lady finger variety I have anymore so I took the patch down and now I have to remove the root bulb (its big on this one, it grew like crazy). Also some 6' variety I had decent luck with getting fruit I removed them completely too. Going in a new direction.

Moving the PH to the west side of the yard with hopes they will cast some more shade on the porch and get better sun.

Putting red dwarf on the east side now.

Orinoco stayed put (just got a new shoot last week)

Need one new variety, haven't decided on it yet

Ok so it's way too early to be planting bananas outdoors in New Jersey right now but... I had to get my bananas out of the rented greenhouse to make room for the owners stock. No problem ... I put all the others in my hoop house and have a heater for it if neccesary... which I doubt since it's only been getting to the mid 40's for the most part and only for a short while near dawn. My ice cream banana though which was 8 1/2 ft( p- stem height) with a 6 ft pup was cut down to 6 ft and is back up to 7 with some new leaves growing already so.... I mulched it heavily around the base and wrapped it in plastic... on the warm sunny days I'll open the top to vent and close it back up at night for a few weeks....

I'm moving some bananas around to make room for other things and get more sun to some of my bananas that have been encroached upon by trees. Today I dug up a California Gold that's about 5' tall and moved it into a spot which I amended heavily so it can grow more vigorously and, hopefully, flower for me in a couple of months. It had a decent-size pup on it which I potted up. Can't decide if I'll sell it with these good prices they've been going for or if I'll keep it as a back-up.

Tomorrow I'll move a San Jose which is about 5.5'-6' tall.

I cut off one of the 3 pups on my IC, but it had no roots--so I potted it up and bagged it and moved it to the shade to give it a little better chance of making it. I think I will wait to cut one more.

I also have two pups I got from Abnshrek in the process of developing some roots--looks like at least one is starting to grow and has a new leaf.

Tony is correct. I have lots of gophers. Every plant has to have a wire basket. It is a pain in the ass! It takes a long time to make the wire basket. The wire cuts you. The rolls of wire cost $85 per roll. I have easily bought 10 rolls by now. If you don't use the basket your plant will be eaten. I have become proficient in catching the little bastards.

I got two of them a few years ago from a nursery called Exotica in the San Diego area. They have lots of uncommon plants. The owners are very earthy but nice. At that time I picked up a few other uncommon varieties and a Star fruit tree.

Good morning Andrew,

Andrew, did I hear that Exotica went out of business this year?

According to my pal Wikipedia, the Bull Snake is just a large subspecies of Gopher snake that doesn't occur in CA. You should stock up on Pacific Gopher Snakes to save the hassle of gopher-proofing your planting holes!

I called Exotica a few months ago and they said their lease on one of the properties was up but they were not completely closing. Where do I get gopher snakes?

I made the mistake of trying to remember a common name of the local Pituophis. Make sure it is the local species/subspecies for your area. I don't know reputable dealers there but neighbors that don't like snakes in their yards can be a good source. I did a quick search and came up with californiaherps.com which had a color range maps for the Pacific Gopher snake.
I hope this helps, biological controls are always best! :jalapenonaner:

The foliage is a strap like leaf dark green with red undersides and some coloration on the canes. Plants can grow to 4 to 6 feet tall. The plants came originally from the Himalayas .
I got the plants from Brians Botanicals. Great person to deal with. The plants are always big too. Im always happy when I see my box on the front porch.

I potted up a Black Thai and a Siam Ruby that I just got from Floridahill Nursery.
The plants are in great shape and about 14-16 inches, the Ruby even came with
a tiny pup coming out of the base!:08: I got a DC a Nain and two Ensetes from them last week, and the plants were so beautiful I had to get more. I now have 12 plants, including two musellas and two Basjoos wintered over bareoot.:woohoonaner:

Planted up 3 'nanas in the garden last week, but I ended up with all the leaves burned by the sun...... too much hurry !!!

Luckily the cigar leaves are ok, so after the shock they'll grow again green leaves

I planted the two surviving Thai Papaya plants I started last Summer(the rest were eaten by Possums in the greenhouse. The 3 least damaged I brought onto the f porch and dragged them in the house every time it froze. Only 2 made it...) as well as the last Winter Squash 'Sucre du Berrie'. Tomorow I start digging out the old Oronocos that never blom(let alone fruit) to make space for future fruit trees.

I was going to plant a Dwarf Red, a Double Mahoi, and a Hua Moa; but the rain kicked butt, and I slinked away soaked to the skin. I'll try again tomorrow.

:08: Major 'nanner kudo's to Gabe15 for the tip on going to Ko'olau Farmer's to look for some banana cultivars I was interested in. :woohoonaner: If I remember correctly they had some Dwarf Red, Double Mahoi, Orinoco (maybe dwarf), one Plantain, some Williams Hybrid, and I think I saw a Mysore, too. There was only one Hua Moa (which I quickly snatched up), and it went home with a Dwarf Red, and a Double Mahoi. I also saw about 8 or 9 unmarked pots of something that was a dead-ringer for Siam Ruby. You folks have posted plenty of Siam Ruby photos, so I'm quite sure that is what it was. Don't know why there was no label or price on those. I passed it up since I don't know if it is edible/seeded or not, and I don't have the space to waste on a mere ornamental. I wish I did. Based on my orchid experience, I'd judge the condition of the plants as somewhere between fair and good. I picked the best, most robust ones of the selection they had, and am hoping I done good. I groomed them of the dead leaves, and once they are situated in their new sites, I expect them to perk up and take hold.

:0519: Here are my new 'nanners:

my dw orinocos and what was left of my Ice creams, lost my Dw Red Green so if anyone has a pup I would be interested. wind blew my green house over in early spring and then they got hit that night by cold.
got out my Naners today to put them back in the ground and one had bloomed in storage out of the ground. wouldn't ya know it would happen that way all those little nanners never to become desert

Hi all. I planted one of 3 Tandara Red(Maurelii) plants in the ground 10 days ago. The weather is still cool here, in the SE of Europe, and that pup in the ground stays almost with no growth(but with very intensive red coloring on the back side of a leafs) in contrast to that one still keeping in pot.
The third one has an adventure - my little dog Maggy jump on it in the car when I transporting him and breaks it approx. an inch from the bottom (http://ivonekitov.glog.bg/_files/5276226.jpg). I thought he is dead, but few days he pushed up 2 or 3 stalks only(with no leafs) and finally - the new leaf! So I'm very happy and hope till the end of the month will place it on a ground!

Jon (pitangadiego), I'm surprised you could find spots to plant that many new ones!

Over about the last month I've planted:
Ice Cream, Rose, Dwarf Namwah, Raja Puri, Cardaba, Tomoc, Kluai Khai, Manzano, Pisang Klotek, Pisang Ceylan, Mysore, Misi Luki, and Mona Lisa.

Still have a few left that need to go in the ground.
