I haven't quite finished yet, but I potted everything from my San Diego trip:
Red and White Iholena, Belle and Williams from Matt in SD - thanks Matt!
Then, Orinoco, Praying Hands, Gran Nain and Mysore - plus some Pitayas -all from Sunfish - Thanks Tony!
Then, FHIA-2, FHIA-17, FHIA-23, SH3640 from Pitangdiego - thanks Jon!
Then Ae Ae from CaGary - Thanks Gary!
Planted a Puya Alpestris the other day too. Man, those things are dangerous!
Yesterday another box arrived with Cal Gold, Goldfinger and Mysore from Microfarmer - thanks Jeff! Still have to go buy more pots and soil.

Still have another dozen or so coming! Yikes!!! (Loving it!!) Then in my spare time I am trying to germinate several hundred banana seeds that have been accumulating over the past few months. When I finish those, I can start on my tropical and other plant seeds (only about 15,000 seeds, although a bunch are poppy seeds) Also got the TC lab set-up finally, so I will be practicing in my spare time this winter - Wahoo!!!

MsKitty, I have some started - a Chinese Blue Chungii Bamboo. It got a little toasted at first, but is making a comeback. I should have some for you this spring. I forgot to mention all of the bamboo I planted. Here is what I have growing now: Blue Chungii, Common Bamboo, Buddha Belly-Kimmea, Regular Buddha Belly Ventricosa, Thai Nodding, Black Lako, Golden Hawaiian, Oldhami and one other NOID. And of course, there is more on the way....

Thanks for the kind words The shorter bushy one is an unknown multplex that was given to me, and the other is Bambusa Viridi Flavus, or something like that. I know I butchered the name, but I'm not at home and don't have it memorized.

I actually planted this a couple of months ago. There were two of them that were of this variety - M. Tomoc. Both were two foot long sword pups. The other is growing really good, but this one just kept getting black and mushy until it was just 6" tall and 3/4' diameter of black sheath, although I was spraying it with fungicide twice a week.

4 weeks ago, I saw what I thought was a weed, but turned out to be a new slender pup. The following week, this was followed by a green slit in the blackened original sheath that turned out to be the original plant pushing out some growth. Another week after that, there was another pup growing. This was taken over a week ago. The newest pup has actually leafed out some.

Hello Kev,
According to Jon (Pitangadiego) M. Tomoc is similar to M. Lacatan, but it only grows to around 6' to 8' (1.8M to 2.4M) at his farm. As with the Lacatan, it is also from the Philippines.

Here's a link to his website. Look under "Tomoc":

I am always hopeful that I can get anything to grow here. I look at it as, Won't know until I try. They said that bananas won't grow in the desert, but with some modifications to environment, prayers and some luck, they seem to be able to grow here. Next we will see if they fruit. I noticed that Gadget has some in fruit down in Tempe, so I am encouraged.
Yes, both the Rainbow Eucalyptus and Yellow mangosteen will be kept indoors - at least at night. If the temps are warm enough, they will get some outside time weather permitting.

If this Rainbow gets to be a size where it has to be outside, I might make some cuttings and root them, then sell the tree.

Some members of the kalanchoe family are tall and ornamental and until they bloom have only a slight resemblance to the scallop-leaf variety sold as indoor plants. I think you should get some of those!

I planted up these SDCs because they were still in the ground and it'll get too cold for them soon. They have been subjected to one 34F frost (they were covered with sheets) and a few other upper 30 and 40F temps. Took them all just fine. The 2 in the one container were actually pups of the biggest one. I wasn't on top of the bananas this summer and i let the pups stay attached too long, but oh well. Next summer they'll get divided. I'm going to put in a huge banana patch next summer and i'll have at least 20 corms to start with! Its going to be a jungle :) or so i hope. Another thing was that this summer had very few 90F+ days...highest was 94F. Also was VERY dry in July/Aug/Sept...

I have basjoos and sikks too... One of my basjoos is around 7ft right now, with a couple of giant pups attached (i really was slacking this year!). So there *should* be a 10ft or better banana next year.

I plant them out in late April if the weather looks decent. I'm guessing it was around the 20th. They really don't do much for the first month or so.

For winter they'll just sit in the extra bedroom until it gets really cold and then get moved into the kitchen or where ever its a little warmer. They just sit and really don't do anything all winter. I water them maybe a few times all winter once they come in the house. In some ways SDCs work really good up here in Wisconsin, plus they look better then the basjoos.

Hey Frank, you planted outdoors this year in late April? I live in MKE WI - prolly same zone or more (Z5 here) & we had a frost warning night of May 28. Unusual here for that time. I already planted a nanna tree inground a week before & wrapped it up good that night. The leaves died & it looked dead, but it grew new leaves & did well all summer.
Did your trees suffer or did you protect them?
How did yours do that night?? I just happened to write that day on my calendar. May 28 is very late for frost here...I usually have my garden planted by late April.
Hey, Kent & Howard, you guys are just too funny! Yes, I caught that too! LOL

Yesterday I planted a Cardaba, Hua Moa, and the unknown "California Hardy" from Lodi, CA in the ground. I bought these earlier in the year and they were in my greenhouse and were getting big for their pots. It's a bit late to be planting outside here, getting into the upper 40s at night, but it is nice during the day and I decided to make the move as I've got to reserve space in my greenhouse for higher priority plants (Ae Ae, papaya, miracle fruit, pineapple, some tomatoes, basil, and some other small plants.

Hi Harvey
Yes, unfortunately I have to bring all banana plants in every fall. I don't
have a greenhouse, Most of the plants I bring in, chop off the leaves and
keep them in the basement where it is cool and dark. keeping them as
dormant bulbs until spring. The others that I want to work with go into
a special room where we can adjust humididty and light conditions.
The Golden leaves banana is supposed to grow edible fruit. And is
apparently very tasty. I will never know as I am allergic to banana's
and have never eaten a whole one in my life. If I do, I could die. The
plants sure are great though.
I brought in my Dwarf Enano Gigante 3 weeks ago and noticed it is
starting to variegate. If it continues to do so, and when it grows
out a bit more, I will post a pic. I posted a pic of the Golden Leaves
Banana in the Variegated pic section.

Potted the Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' received from Magilla Gorilla (thanks Andrew!) Keeping her in the shade for a week or so, until it can go into the greenhouse. Also potted: Kofi, 1,000 fingers, Valery, Xishuangbannensis (we'll see in spring if it is, in fact, as advertised) another M. lasiocarpa, 2 NoID's, a Traveler's Palm, 2 Taro bulbs, a Tree Fern and a boatload of seeds.
Also have to pot 6 TC's of Yangambi and Mai'a Maoli Eka (3 of each). Put 16 Ingens seeds in various potting media following Cape Smoke treatment (Thanks to Chong!) and still have about 300+ misc seeds to plant - ornata, perrieri, coccinea, superbum or glaucum (they weren't labelled), Higa and balbisiana (Thanks Gabe!).
In the TC lab, I have several going, but more to put into culture over the next week. Dwarf Namwa pearl, maybe Saba and Pitogo (if the corms don't start showing some signs of life soon)
That's most of it, I guess.

Sometime in October, I dug up one of my IC nana & potted it into a too-small temporary pot. 23 days later, I put it in a 30 gal pot & I could not believe how much the roots grew in 23 days! It was a good potting mix I guess.
It's in the L room (20ft ceiling) in south facing window - no xtra lights, & it just put out a huge leaf.
I also put my 2 TC babies in a 5 inch pot (was in 2 inch).
My Christmas cactus is finally starting blooms like crazy- after a tiny cutting rooted in water 1 1/2 years ago. It is huge & I just potted up from 6" to a 10" pot as it was rootbound . Can't wait for the blooms to open.
Also, I potted my Amarylis & it is growing again (from it's nap).
And, I potted a peace lily stored in fridg crisper. I bought it last Easter & cut it down & stored the bulb --it has many babies & main stem is about 8 inches now. And, they said potted Easter lilys never grow back!
It'll be nice to have flowers blooming in Dec, Jan & Feb!!!

Patty - I have grown Easter Lily bulbs. (Lilium something or other) After they bloomed (bulbs forced in a GH to bloom at Easter) we put them in the ground, and they bloom each Jun/Jul. However, if you have what is commonly called a Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) this is a tropical, and does not need to be cut back, nor does it need to be put in the fridge. (in fact, refrigerating it might even kill it)
As far as the Christmas ( Thanksgiving, Easter) cactus goes, they really like a little jolt of cold, to set buds. My mother, who brought a cutting with her, from Norway, kept the plant, for 30 years, in the concrete cut out window, in the cellar, where it got down to 39ºF. When it became loaded with buds, she brought it up.

Today I planted a Cardaba, and yesterday a KM-5. We had a low temp this morning of 50F and tomorrow morning it should be 48 for the low. This weather not only inhibits growth of the bananas but seems to inhibit sigatoka also. Cold is a greater threat to banana production than is sigatoka in this area. Field trial confirmation might be appropriate.

After murdering all my frost bitten bananas it felt good to create and not destroy. Just got four 3 year old Muscadine grape vines from Willis Orchards in GA. They are Black Noble, Blanc du Bois, Black Southland and Southern Dixie.

Soaked the roots in well water for 7 hours, trimmed roots to 6 inches and potted them up. Last winter I would have taken a chance at planting in the ground. No way this year.

When I left Charlotte, NC four years ago my small orchard was headed for the first fruiting year - #3. Never got to see or taste the fruit. Oh well, when the buyer offers full asking price on the house it's not so painful after all, oh yeah!

Now I have to forget about training and pruning American bunch grapes and learn about southern Muscadines. From 4 cordon Kniffen to Geneva double curtain here we go!!!

And if I see one whisker of the neighborhood bobcat show over the fence ......... he's BBQ!!!!!

OK this is the year I've decided to take some of the potted Bananas and try them in the ground. So iv been digging holes all week yes thats right all week .LOL are soil is made up of many layers of interlocking coble stones so digging is a chore. I've tried to make the holes big 40" across and 2.5ft deep. I'm sure they will have lots of trouble growing roots beyond the confines of the holes I've dug but i think thats big enough for them. I'm puting two Ice creams and one dwarf Brazilian in the ground. I'm hoping they grow better. The Ensete Ventricosum i grew from seed last year are going in to a bed on the east side of my house. I'm thinking they will do the best here sins they like sandy soil and fairly low levels humidity.

Last week I rescued several banana plants from JD Andersen's in De Luz. Yesterday I cleaned them up and potted them in a mixture of worm castings, scorria, horticultural sand, and ground peat -- well, most of them anyway. I ran out of that mixture and potted the rest in some Kellogg's Nitrohumus that has been aging in the garage for a year. Anyway, the idea is to get them healthy again. After that occurs, I will be sending them out to the folks who reserved them. The varieties are: Ty Ty Gold, Williams, Saba, Popolou, Praying Hands.

Image in my gallery of the 8 sitting in new pots and hydrating. Will move them to the morning sun location and let them acclimate later today. They will be moved in again in a few days to longer sun, then out in pots to where their new beds are. (I have to dig some more...)

I plan on keeping them potted for about a month then transplanting to the new outdoor home. I also plan on keeping a photo gallery of weekly shots for each.

Ah! Harvey my lists would be more than 3 bananas because I removed all the plants in my pergola plat except the Calif Gold that has fruit in it and now I have so many pups sprouting from it. Remember I waited 2 years before the first pup came and now it is compensating for its time lost. .
You ought to see my backyard now. The pergola plat is gone and the pergola was transferred to another area in my backyard. Most of the bananas were transferred to pots at least for now and will be planted close to the fence or on a hill.
I'll post pics soon.

Harvey , Please keep me in mind if a CCH becomes available in the future.

Hey, Bob, I'll try to remember. Last year I bought 5 of these pups and gave away the 2 largest to a local club which raised $165 auctioning those 2 plants off. I had the 2 weakest ones die on me (one's not quite dead and I was hoping it would recover, but it looks unlikely) and I have one growing well. I bought the 2 yesterday thinking I might get them established for the same club auction in early August. If I decide to do something else, I'll try to remember you're interested.

Shaw is planning on moving pretty soon but will be taking plenty of banana plants with him.

BTW, I think your tan looks cool! :P I've got a dark tan going on my head and arms but the rest of me could scare folks if I showed them! :ha:

Nice BIG leaves!
What do you mean "it choked on me" ? Did it die but send a pup out?
Sorry for my ignorance :(

I don't know if this term is used by others or not. Normally, "choke" is used when the flower is unable to emerge from the top of the pseudostem but it will sometimes emerge from the side. Sometimes I get a pup and the existing shoot dries up some and gets stiff, making it hard for the new leaves to merge. Sometimes it will emerge from the side of the pseudostem just like the flower will in the above use of the term. In this case, and in some others, the original shoot just withers away and a new shoot (or pup) emerges.

Today I placed 2 liter soda bottles (bottoms cut off and screw tops removed) over my two Senorita pups and the Veinte Cohol pup to help keep the existing top from drying out and getting stiff. I've trimmed off the tip of the Veinte Cohol twice. I think it will put out new leaf growth very soon.

Sorry for using some confusing language.

By the way, here's a picture of the pup's momma taken by Mitchel. The psuedostem had a circumference of 51"!!! Do you notice any similarities??? :ha:

Oh yeah, I did read about "choking", but I thought it was only the flower & nanas that got choked inside. I think it said Raja Puri is prone to this.
I think my pup is choking...the nice healthy misi luki I won from Mitchel. The tip turned brown & a leaf will NOT push thru. It split at the base from growing. I too snipped about a inch off the top so maybe a leaf will come out.
51 inch p stem...WOW!

Today I planted at Musa balbisiana var. liukiuensis I bought from BigDog. I got outbid by a couple of members (Andrew won) but Frank kindly agreed to sell one to me at the winning price also. There's no bids yet on his plant at [Auction] Musa balbisiana var. liukiuensis...HUGE pup! - Bananas.org (http://www.bananas.org/classifieds/viewad-330.html). Mine surprised me with the mass of roots on a young plant. Makes me wonder if it will take over the entire banana garden!

Two weeks ago I planted my fist banana, a California Gold.

Wednesday, I 'rescued' a Dwarf Cavendish from the local grocery store florist. It was over watered and under potted.

Yesterday, the first bananas that I had ordered (a few days previous to planting my CA Gold) arrived.

So now I have a CA Gold in the ground and in pots I have:
Blue Java
Gran Nain
Dwarf Orinoco
Goldfinger
2 Dwarf Cavendish
Dwarf Namwah
.................
So, now I am the proud new addict of 8.

With this heat, and my new 1" poly irrigation line, everything is taking off fast. Also lots of 8-2-12 and fresh manure compost. Good ol' summer - ribs on the BBQ tonight with copious beers and fresh corn.

Thanx Bob! Will be sending you a box this weekend!
Will keep them potted under as close to ideal conditions, as I can, for each. Will plant the Sikkimensis & Bordelon this coming spring! Since the High Color Minis can be outdoors or in pots & mature at about 3 1/2' tall, will leave them potted & put outside during the warm part of the season.

Really? You're giving me hope for my little guy. It is unfurling its second new leaf since it got here. The first new leaf took a little more than 2 weeks from start to finish. This leaf looks like it's taking less than 10 days. I'm wondering how long I'll keep counting leaves instead of measuring height, which really hasn't increased very much.

Today I repotted a very root bound Dwarf Cavendish (with pup) I found at Lowes. I remember what my last DC was like, though, and I'm kinda nervous about it in this mountain micro-climate. (I'm also still wondering what Lowes was thinking, labeling it "Hardy Banana." That could cause mass naner-cide this winter.)

Hi Eric,
just a few advices here: on your bordelon, cut that brown top off and continue cutting until you see the center green, 'cause the plant seems like if it could be choking in a week or two.
Also when I had leaves like that, I put the plant into the shade to recover and then in the direct sun...
Other than that, nice plants. :birthdaynana:

Just what I always wanted another banana(ok an ensete), Just because I have 2 perfectly fine ones in the ground already doesn't mean I don't look. This one was going for $70 at the local Agway, it's been in a 5 gallon pot all summer. They just put everything on 50% off and this didn't have a price label but a 2 or 3 gallon was listed at 49.95 so I casually mentioned to the temp college student at the register that "the other one over there was going for $50 and half off...........I didn't exactly lie...........but got this for $25 and ran......fast.

Cheryl, mine has no red at all in the leaves but as it got older and much larger it developed red in the mid ribs. I got mine from ebay as well( I think wellspring but don't really remember) so you never know........Still it seems consistant with the decription. If you notice most of the time guys like Gabe who know best will mostly wait till something flowers to give a positive ID on a questionable (and smallish) plant. Check out super dwarf cavendish in the wiki most of those pictured have no red but one does, mine here does as well...........is it possible that some of these cultivars are a bit variable? I think so since the growth habits on my SDC is very consistant with what it should look like. In any case dont sweat it, you've got beautiful healthy plants and they'll sort themselves out as time goes by.

Hi Cheryl :). I'm no nanner expert yet, but I think Bob has a point. I got 4 Siam Rubys from 2 different nurseries yet all 4 look different. That's one nice, obese ensete. :D
Thanks Jack , I didn't see this till just now. I really bought it because it reminded me so much of Bilders' big fat ones in Germany. Have you contacted him yet? He's kind of my cold weather growing idol. Wish I spoke German I'd keep him busy for hours!:ha:

A friend of mine called me Monday from Atlanta to tell me about some beautiful variegated bananas she found at a nursery...did I want one?

Well, hell yes, I wanted one! I ended up with a 5 ft tall aeae, now planted under my big live oak. Pics coming soon!!!

Digging african reds tomorrow (if it doesn't rain AGAIN).

I beleive my second attempt with transaplanting my Ice Cream pup was a suscess ! My first attempt bit the dust so I waited for a taller pup. It struggled big time and I had my doubts but noticed a leaf shooting out the top this week so I guess it is going to make it. I had a spot reserved for it and badly wanted an Ice Cream in the location before this years growing season ended. Also, my first Basjoo planted year before last finally took off this year. I read on one of the forums to be patient, it may take a year or two for a Basjoo to get esatablished. I think this one has.

This might be off subject a bit but this is my first post and I have some questions about where to plant. I already know what I want to plant. EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But I need to be conservative and shoot for EVERYTHING that can survive being left in the ground year round. I am in zone 9a. Questions are:
How much distance should you leave between different varieties of banana plants? I have lots of fence line that I am planting naners along.
Are banana plants in any way harmful to horses?

Today I planted a Musa itinerans itinerans that I got from Bananaman88 a couple of months ago. I gave it time in a pot for it to acclimate and for me to learn more about it. Thanks Brent and Frank for the information!! :2239:

I have two older mats of Kofi, and the one I planted is a pup from my largest mat that is now pushing pups. When the weather get cool and wet in winter, it is effected by Black sigatoka. But when the weather warms up with night time temps in the 70s, the disease become less active. I hope this helps. :2239:

Rmplmnz,

I planted all of the Rose except one. and I potted it. I also created new mats with the PJBs, strategically placed for good cross pollenation. Diploid cultivars with disease resistance and nematode tolerance are the Bomb!!! Thanks!! :2239:

Thank you my friend!!

3640 is growing like a weed..as are the others..my collection has expanded more this year than any other year..

Be interesting to see how well the PJB's do for you..they are very unusual fruit.

My experience over-winter was identical. There are virtually no signs that sigatoka was ever present. I did like the banana farmers do, and removed only the infected leaf parts rather than the entire leaves. The Sigatoka spread to a few of the pups but in very minor and isolated areas. Each time I'd notice the lightly rust-colored streaks starting to emerge I'd just cut out that part of the leaf.

I also found that removing 12-24 inches from the tips of vertically arching leaves prolongs their ability to support their own weight, and makes them more resistent to strong winds.
