Today I planted Jamaican Red, Orinoco, Manzano, Williams Hybrid, and Saba. The Orinoco has OVER 8 PUPS/EYES (that I could count!). These all came from MediaHound. He also sent me LOTS of extras!!!! Thank You SO MUCH Jarred!!!!

All of the pups/eyes. I counted 9. One had to be damaged to get a larger one off, another small pup had to be cut off with a larger one as well. Hope that one survives

Planted the bottom of the pot with natural soil from my yard, topped off with Black Kow (manuer) and mixed with natural potting soil.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=8552&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=8552&perpage=12)
Topped off with more mixture of Black Kow and Potting Soil.

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=8554&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=8554&perpage=12)
ALL of my new plants planted. The front three on the bottom right are Dward PR bananas that were pups off of a pot I had bought at Rockledge Gardens. They were in the 10 gal pot together (already split) and I seperated them and gave each their own pot.

Today I planted possibly two different varieties of unknown bananas. I bought them today from my friends at Rockledge Gardens. It was an over grown 25 gal. pot at a great deal for $30. There were two adult plants and three babies. When I got it home and split it, turns out that there was two seperate main rhizomes in the pot. So this might possibly be two different varieties. Each of the main rhizomes were 8-9 ft tall and had 1-2 small pups and one had a large one (3ft. corm). Guess we'll see what it is when the two larger ones fruit, hopefully they'll start flowering this fall!!! Knowing what the nursery regularely have for a selection, knowing they replanted two plants in the 25 gal pot, I think it might be an Ice Cream or a Williams. Would be awsome if it was one rhizome each in the pot!!!!! I'll take pictures of the planted bananas another day. My back yard is a mess due to some messy contractors that pressure washed old paint off of our patio walls and messed up some of my plants!!!!!!

I had also dug up a Dwarf Puerto Rican Banana that had died and replaced it with one of the new ones above, and to my suprise there were three babies at the bottom of the dead corm waiting to come up out of the gound. I repotted those into a pot until they could mature some more before seperating.

Killer deal JP! :woohoonaner:

I planted 4 eyes from poor Valery. The main stem rotted to the corm. The temps hit 42 degrees last fall and she declined from there. I scraped off most of the rot and left her in the sun to dry up. Then I planted her pieces up in 1 gallon black pots to warm in the sun. Can I get a prayer for Valery?:2141:

Yesterday and today I started the germination process of sikkimensis, velutina, voilecea, ornata, balbisiana, and zebrina. I also planted seedlings of tomato, beets, radishs, broccoli, lettuce, carrots, squash, zuccini, red sweet corn, ocra, artichoke, and brussle sprouts.

I also planted seeds of Sunflowers: strawberry, cappuccino, bicentenary, chocolate, chianti, & moulin rouge; King Protea, St. Mary's artichoke (a thistle), venus fly trap, var. passion friut from around the world, ephedra sinica (yes, what ephedra is made from, it's an herb in china), and golden alexandria strawberries!

Tomorrow I'll be planting Navajo Hopi Tea (an herb like chamomile), round leaf sundew (carnivorous), and pitcher plant (also carnivorous). These three I must put through stratification in the fridge.

I've not been updating this thread with all I have been planting lately, but...
I've been doing a lot of rearranging lately.
Today I planted 4 Dwarf Red corms cut from the mother plant on the other side of the yard. I cleared away some ficus hedge to make room for the bananas. :) Almost done getting rid of the row of ficus I've been working on. These ficus plants were about 15' tall, lots of work to dig the stumps up, but I have been doing a couple here and there for about a year now... 3 to go out of perhaps 30 that were there.
I also planted two Saba corms today next to three others I did a couple weeks ago.
Tomorrow I plan to plant two Green Dwarf Red corms as part of a relocation project as well.
Also recently, I planted into the ground the following that were potted up: Variegated Namwah, Dwarf Namwah, Siam Black, Pisakng Klotek, Sweetheart, High Noon, Hua Moa, Dwarf Ladyfinger (Logees), and a Variegated Giant Indonesian (probably not "Variegated Silver Bluggoe" as it came in as). Lately, I've also been busy up to my usual separating pups from mother plants and lengthening rows.

About 350 corms;

5 species/varieties :- Sikkimensis, Sikkimensis 'Red Flash', Nagensium X, Ornata 'Aurea', Laterita

Well, I actually sort of 'heeled' most of them into holding trays, but it still took ages. :bananas_b

I would bet a beer or two that with the possible exception of silly little TC starts there are more bananas in my back garden than anywhere else in the UK (unless someone knows otherwise?). get in... :0520:

Her reaction is best described as 'disbelief' (and that's without her looking into the finances of it all!).
Mind you, I do have to put up with all the shoes you girlies seem to possess, I just about got away from town without buying her a new red handbag this morning. I mean, she's got loads already, and there's always carrier bags available.

Wait... I'm already married. Sigh...

Well, my BIL collects anything Budweiser and has a room dedicated to his collection, and others around here collect rusty old junk cars that sit on their property for years, or filing cabinets full of comic books that never get looked at, so I guess we're not doing so bad after all - for us it's a growing investment. :0490:

Be well,

I planted a Golden African and Ice Cream a couple of months ago. Immediately after I planted these the temperature dropped into the high 20's and I thought I had lost the plants. I then ordered a another Ice Cream and a Misi Luki. Right after I planted the new bananas I found the original plants leaving out from what I thought were dead stalks.
Today I was at my local nursery and found a beautiful Ice Cream banana. I couldn't help but buy it and plant it this afternoon.
I just hope my wife doesn't realize I've planted our whole yard in bananas.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/franktank232/basjoo.jpg

I drilled a good size hole in the bottom, put some wood chips down and then pure compost (i think its mostly composted leaves). Threw some lawn fertilizer in there with it and will probably need a chainsaw to get it out of there next October!!! We don't have a tree big enough for a treehouse, so this will have to do.

Do they grow well in SC and year round or do you have to take them up? We are ordering a greenhouse unless we can find one at costco tomorrow but I would rather be able to plant them in the ground and leave them if possible. Where do yall get your plants/corms?

qwkslver, Welcome again!

I don't know what part of the state you're in, but SC is either Zone 7 to the NW, or Zone 8 to the SW. In any case, those plants that you planted won't make it outside in the yard without generous protection. I'm in Zone 8b (allegedly) in Seattle, WA and I've been growing several banana varieties that I thought would do well outside with some protection, i.e., visqueen over the plants in the winter, or a cold greenhouse. But even those were pretty difficult so far. If you don't mind seeded varieties, you might try planting M. Basjoo and Mussella Lasiocarpa. I've seen pictures of them in snow. Though, personally, I give them some minimal protection.

Along the same lines, with a little extra protection, in my experience, D. Orinoco, CA Gold, and TX Star would be great plants to plant outside, if you want seedless fruit.

My results have fluctuated over the years, as I get closer and closer to some varieties that have survived despite the varying temperatures and sunlight conditions in our area. In the mid 90s, I had 2 Red Abyssinian bananas that survived several winters, where they even got snowed in, without a scratch. They grew even taller the following summers. Then one winter, even though we did not have much freezing weather, I noticed one of them was tilting. When I touched the plant to check on it, it fell and exposed a rotting corm. Lesson learned: Do not let the root of you banana be soaking in water in the cold weather. So happened that during that time, Seattle experienced daily rain for almost 2 months, stopped a day, then rain again for several weeks. And the temperature was around 34°F! Those plants lasted me 4 or 5 years. Ironically, they were from Ty Ty Nursery ( they were much milder then). I tried to buy replacements but they didn't want to sell any plants to WA state residents, due to some kind of restrictions or something.

In the winter of 2006, 98% of my plants survived our temperatures that dipped into the single digits, even when we lost power for 7 days and 6 nights, when it was 5° - 6°. Last winter, all my Super Dwarf Cavendish perished. So did 5 Dwarf Brazilians (2 sword pups & 3 TC), my 2 remaining Dwarf Niņos, Ice Cream, Goldfinger, 2 Raja Puri, 2 Zebrinas and several others. What remained were CA Gold, Thonsonii, Balbisiana - all green! Also, but not so green are a dozen D. Orinocos that I've had from TC from Agristarts. When the sun shows up in Seattle, I'll be having a memorial service for my fallen friends.

I just got several bananas from eBay. I got my CA Gold, 1 D Barazilian, and 1 Zebrina from my esteemed friend, Mr. Joe R. My D. Orinocos and D. Niņos are from Agristarts. Thomsonii and Balbisiana from our Moderator Gabe.

When I finish my hot section of my greenhouse, I'll be on the hunt for a Ae'Ae. Well, actually, I already know where I'm gonna get them. Right now, I'm ordering some bananas from Mr. Ben Poirier in San Diego.

Are you in NE? Does it take much to have a TC lab? I'm planning to start a TC lab in the Philippines. I read that the Owner of the biggest TC lab in the Philippines started with PhP500,000 in 2003 (that's equivalent to less than $10,000), and is now producing 375,000 banana plantlets (4" - 6") per month. Is this possible? Or marketing ploy?

Thanks.

Chong, I'm originally from the Seattle are and will move back there next year likely. I was wondering if you have ever had one of your orinocos or CA gold bloom there?

Zach
Mr. Zach,
I only got my D Orinocos 4 years ago from Agristarts and have been trying to expose them slowly to the elements here. Out of the original 72 plugs, only 12 - 15 are surviving, not including the ones I gave away. Because of the last 2 winters they have been going in and out of dormancy and now are only anywhere from 8 to 14 inches tall, and they are in 14' tall citrus cans. In the next few weeks, I will transfer most of them in bigger pots, but the strongest ones, I'll plant in the ground as soon as the ground warms up (I bet you it's still in the 30s).

I had a Raja Puri in a 50 gallon pot outside that grew to 5 feet last summer, but it succumed to the weather last winter, inspite of being in a plastic mini greenhouse and heater in it.

The CA Gold, I got it from Joe R. last June with a D.Brazilian, and they traveled with us back to Seattle, then to Las Vegas (we were staying in hotels for 3 months) then back to Seattle again. Both of them stayed in a cool greenhouse together with several other varieties of bananas plus other plants. Of the two, only the CA Gold survived.

It has been a big challenge so far, but I think I'm gaining some inroads. Another problem I've had is that my work has taken me all over the country for months on end, except for 4 or 5 days of R&R every 35 to 45 days. This alone wreck considerable havoc on my plants. One of these days, I may just post a picture of a banana in bloom.

When you get back here in Seattle, hopefully my home improvements will be complete and I can welcome you and the other 4 members that are in the Seattle area for a get-together. Otherwise, let's just get together somewhere near.

Billabong, that's a great industry position to be in.

It sure is! Plus my partner and I are well known throughout the commercial industry so there is no shortage of business nor is there much competition - between the two of us we have about 50 years of academic/research (both floriculture & horticulture), consulting, and TC experience. We started out specializing in hard to grow and difficult to propagate plants but grew as we were asked to grow a wider variety of crops. It sure beats fighting for grant money!

I actually planted these three weeks ago. They were shipped the day after they were dug up. The larger one is a TyTy Gold and the small one is a Dwarf Lady Finger.

TyTy Gold corm sprayed with fungicide:

TyTy Gold:

This picture of the TyTy Gold is from a link in the Encanto Farms website, which describes it as a short and stout plant. Naturally, when I saw the word short, I just had to have one.

Planted a 7g 'Thai Green' (some type of Cavendish) and a 7g 'Kofi' today. I got 5 or so 7 gallons to plant this week. Rainy season has started here in SW Fla. 2" of rain in the last 3 days. Doesn't really matter to the bananas since they are all on drip.

It sure is! Plus my partner and I are well known throughout the commercial industry so there is no shortage of business nor is there much competition - between the two of us we have about 50 years of academic/research (both floriculture & horticulture), consulting, and TC experience.

So interesting. Please post more about TC as I am anxious to learn more about it. Do yo know of a website that could explain more? When I do a google, there are so many pages that I can't find the page I want.
Thanks!

This is my third attempt this year at starting my papaya plants. This germination method was very successful. The seeds were soaked for 48 hours in warm water. They were then transferred to a ziplock bag on top of a paper towel wet with bleach water (one drop of bleach per cup). After one week when the seeds opened and the roots started to grow the seeds were transfer to coconut starter pellets.

I was pleasantly surprised to find FHIA-23 has nicely marked leaves.Pretty and tasty!

I chopped a corm last winter and left the lil plantlets to grow on till they got 2' or so and toppled . By then they had seperated from the corm and had thier own roots . I transplanted them into two big pots and grew em to this size. Some were shading the others so I planted the larger ones from one of my pots and replanted the smaller ones into the same pot. I'll plant them in thier own lil pots next time because I had a tangled mess to deal with today and lost a lot of roots .

Just got 5 new bananas today. They are getting potted this weekend.
Pisang Raja, Monthan, Ka-ua-lau (http://www.bananas.org/../wiki/Musa_Ka-ua-lau), Ha'a, and Pitogo. Also got some Bambusa Ventricosum Buddha Belly and 'Kimmei' Buddha Belly. A nice Puya Alpestris came yesterday, too. It will be a busy weekend. Off to HD to get more stuff to extend my drip system and of course, more soil!
Sorry, no pics at present until I get my camera cradle - left it back in Illinois.

Wow, congrats on the Ae Ae Frank! I hadn't seen Jordon post here for a while and I wondered what what was going on with his "brother" project. Another Florida friend of mine from another group wrote me recently to let me know he was coming up on the list. Good luck with it!

I purchased a variegated Basjoo from "varig8" (aka Miami Max or Steven) and potted it up today. I had lots of roots and I'm hoping it will take off quickly. I'm told that it may be 4 to 5 feet tall before it showed nice variegation like the mother plant (the big ne below).

Wow, I am so jealous of you zone niners. I'm already planning in my head where the potted pups are going since my house is already filled every fall/winter with tropicals. I also have to make sure my local garden center will have the hay or straw bales I'll need for mulching. This time of year is so bittersweet.
