This should be a fun thread!
I wish I started it when the site started over a year ago. It would be really cool to look back on now. But hey, may as well start it now, right? :)

Today I planted a pink guava tree into the ground and I potted up five screw pine seedlings.

What other plants (besides bananas), if any, did you plant today?
The thread for bananas is here:

I googled that last vine, it looks pretty good. The nursery that has it is in your neighborhood. Maybe you bought it from them. Your planting a lot of material. Do you know the mature size of the plants? Planting is normally easy, but digging out an agressive plant, vine or tree can be a bear.

Today I planted some Variegated Canna that I stole from the Hotel on the beach...also, about 15 assorted palm seedlings, both frond and fan types. And lastly, I stole a Bird of Paradise, but the plant was tiny, I dont think it is a large type, even though I have never heard of a "Mini" And I don't mean stolen like from a store, just from a rental cottage that had a fire....so I took some plants...=]

Does seed sprouting & potting count?

Potted up 2 yellow clivias that I (finally!) received from an Aussie eBayer (won in Dec - received in late Jan ... naughty ebay seller!). Initially had 'em potted in a single 8" pot, but I'm pushing the growth now in separate pots under grow lights.

Moved 8 variegated clivia sprouts (from an eBay seed seller in China - got 'em in @ 1 week after paying her ... WONDERFUL eBay seller!) from under their tinfoil to the light stand. I really am trying to get as much size on these pretty babies before spring as possible - then everybody gets to go outside to play in the shade bed!

Ooooh - also finished building 2 more light stands for seed starting, cuttings, etc! Built my 1st 2 stands while snowed in & anxious to have something - anything! - to do that had summer & garden overtones to it!

I'm really ready for spring to arrive ... it's just not as much fun to play in the mud & rain. Bahhh!

I seem to have trouble posting photos to this Banana forum for some weird reason, but I will try. It'll probably have to be a string of separate photos.
This was my stream when I first started putting it in. I spliced together some pond liner and went to town. I got this idea for a stream from our local Butterfly Rainforest habitat up at UF. They of course have a huge setup. Mine is "tiny scale". I've always had a pond in the greenhouse, now I have a stream, still pool and a separate pond.

You are in Hawaii, right? The Agricultural Laws dealing with plant import and export in HI are convoluted at best. It used to be that only certain things could not be sent TO Hawaii, including orchids, bananas, bromelaids, coffee plants, and some other stuff, without a specific import permit.

This permit had to be obtained by the receiver in HI, not by the sender. And, everything sent OUT of HI to the Mainland had to be "certified" for export on the HI end as well.

But along about 2005 all of the states rewrote their Ag laws and now its harder to send anything into or out of HI. I would advise you to check with you local office there before you send plants out or accept trades, just to save yourself some potential problems.

A limequat tree!

Finally found one (5gal) thanks to JoeReal's tip @ Home Depot having cold-clime bananas - our HD didn't have any, but I gots me a limequat(Eustis)! It went into a barrel like the variegated pink lemon.

Also sowed my annual requirement of bush baby lima beans (1st round, anyway!) & up-potted bell pepper seedlings. Anchos, fooled you jalapenos (I'm a chili-wuss), bells all are staying in the pots for a few more weeks.

I've been sprouting an excellent sweet potato since late fall. The sprouts went into pots, gradually bringing up the soil level till now. Today they went into their respective barrels - did I mention these were the BEST I've ever ate? Got the originals from an old truck farmer selling literally on the side of the road out of his truck! Only have room for 4 barrels, but if they turn out as hoped - I'll have to make room for more next year.

Tomatoes got put in ground (w/room for cover if it gets nippy - crazy dang weather!) from their pots. They are already hanging w/fruits, green still - but they're there! I only put in 3 types this year:
Variegated ... cuz it's just so darned pretty.
Roma ... these get dried & vacuum sealed allll summer, we use alot in the winter months.
Healthkick ... to make up for the cheesecake fetish.

All done in between breaks to get online, of course! Tomorrow I'm hoping to get the strazzberry barrels tidied up, they're already putting out berries at a rate of @ 1qrt a day. Yummm!

Almost forgot, picked up a wee little portable 5in TV to lug outside w/me. In addition to cheesecake, I'm also a news junky!

A good day.

Yesterday I planted in the ground a coconut palm (#4 for the yard), as well as an Attalea cohune.
The coconut I found floating in the lake behind my fathers home nearby, it must have fallen from his neighbors tree which overhangs the lake between the two properties. It was a little sprout in a very large nut. I had to roll up my pants and get my feet wet to collect it, but I've been through much worse to get my hands on plants. It has a nice orange hue in the midribs... one day I may present it for ID by the coconut experts over at the palm society.
The Cohune palm I got at a recent Palm Society sale here in S. Florida. I can't wait for it to become a goliath, it's only about 2' tall at the moment. I kept it potted up in it's pot for a couple of months before I picked the spot where I set it to reside from now on.
Happy growing! Go plant some trees!

My entire mat of purple sugarcane fell over yesterday! When I righted it up, I got covered in black ants. They love that plant... and so do I!
Should I be topping off the taller stalks while the mat is still digging it's roots in the ground? I thought it was pretty sturdy, it held up to some crazy strong winds before this mishap... it's my first sugarcane so I'm new to it.. although it's a couple of years old, it's really started to take off the past 6 months... any tips on why it fell over? does sugarcane need to be staked or topped a few times as it starts getting massive? I did cut the tallest stalk once already.. all info appreciated, I know you have a lot of rare sugarcane, Frank... ever have that happen..? It probably got flooded with the torrential downpour (that's probably what did it) but is this a known issue with them? seems like a good way to propogate itself... all those exposed roots would then have a spot to take hold if I left it long enough..
thanks

Jarred,
Sorry for the late reply, just saw it!.How tall are your stalks?Usually when they get TOP heavy any wind and rain will usually blow some over. Some varieties are hardier than others.Adding a mound will increase New shoots and growth, it will not stop wind blowing them over though.Tie them up to the fence with some fishing line ect and cut down the ones on the ground. Some varieties DO NOT ratoon(come up in spring)well,so you might think about replanting some of the blown stalks.

miss anna ... did you start you pineapples by the tops or did you buy the plants? the reason i ask is, i started some a few days ago from the tops and would like to know, how long did it take them to root? i would appriciate any info you could impart to me. i googled it and and it seems like everything i read contradicts each other. thank you :2221:

I did them from the tops. Whenever pineapples are on sale, I buy them for the tops. I guess that doesn't make much sense to buy the pineapple just to plant the top to get a pineapple? LOL!!!
I know there are several ways to root them, but I put mine in water for at least a week. Then into a pot. I tried one in the ground once and it didn't survive. :(

LOL Anna. No i do not have any key lime seeds, but you can buy the key limes at the supermarket and pluck them out. that is what i did. $1.19 for a small bag. And you can use the limes for the coronas;) I think a key lime tree is 25 bucks at home depot to. if you want a calamansi seedling(Philippine lime) and or a yuzu(Japanese citrus) seedling. i will give you a few when they are ready.

I would be interested in a seedling or two. And I will look for Key Limes in the store, and force myself to drink Corona to get to the seeds. :0490: :nanawhopp: :2212: :2717:

Tally Man . . . Great idea. I just thought of this myself, then when I got to the top here, I saw that you already started ! What did I plant today, or: A day in the life of a plant nut !

I grow plants for the retail trade. No matter how many hundreds of plants I may be potting, I mix the soil for each specie seperately by hand. Today I'm potting starters of Allamanda dwarf (small green leaves on low bushy plants with Canary yellow flowers) (known in Puerto Rico as "Canario").

Into the mixing tray (an old wheel barrel without legs) mounted on a table at waists height. In goes half a bag of Natural Cypress Mulch. I pick out big sticks and chunks. In goes a 2 gallon nursery pot of river sand. I mix this well (by hand) and then about a 3 gallon pot full of previously broken up Canadian Peat. Mix again. My paid helper, or more often my free help (the wife) fills 4" pots into 10" x 20" trays.

We place previously grown plants on a table next to trays of newly filled pots. With a pair of clippers, I cut short 3" new groth cuttings, trim a few lower leaves and stick in a pre-poked hole two cuttings per pot. The trays of new cuttings go to another table to be watered and then placed in a location under a sprinkler in morning sun. ( Shade in Summer, morning Sun in Winter). In one week these cuttings are dependably rooted. Now they get a drenching of "Blue water", 3 tablespoons of Peters 20-20-20 per 2 gallon sprinkler can. It will take 5 to 8 weeks to be ready to sell.

Today, we completed 300 4" pots of "Canario" If I had not taken so many "coffee breaks" we may have done 400 !

Tomorrow we will divide and pot up Heliconia "Jamaican dwarf" which might be a bit more exciting ?

Business might be a bit monotonous, but its nice being your own boss. I cannot think of anything els I would rather due day after day than working with plants.

Where do you have the room for all this stuff?

Can we go 'outside' for a second and talk exterior plants?

mskitty you might be a little surprised to find out that I'm one of the few folks up here brave enough to successfully grow and transplant one of the trees that are fairly common in your neck of the woods- Mimosas!

My father had an addiction to mimosas when we used to go canoeing in TN and NC back in the 70's, and he (I'm sure) illegally brought a few back one year to plant at our farm.
The only time we had problems at all was the bad winter of '76 and the blizzard of '77, but they did come back eventually, sometimes not until JULY!
Who knows! If 'global warming' is really happening (which I believe it is NOT man-made)
I'll then be READY up here with both Nanas AND Mimosas! :08:

:0519:

Are you kidding?
You've got lots more mimosas down there than I do!

F.Y.I. -We drove to Hilton Head SC in June of this year and I told my wife that I'd like to get another 'variety' of mimosa from a nursery somewhere down there, just to 'diversify' what I have in our own yard a little.

(I also have 15 mimosas growing that I will use in landscaping projects in the area in the future)

So I found a nursery called 'The Greenery' on the way back in Bluffton that had a different type of mimosa. The thing was that it was 7 feet tall and I had to trim it down to fit it in to our Saturn Vue!
( The kids in the back seat were P.O. ed!)

So...addictions can indeed go beyond nanas! :skateboardnana:

g'night!

what colors of camiles, when we lived in va. we had 2 that were huge, they were the white w/ red stripes. it looked like a pepermint candy. and the smell was heavenly.i really believe thats when my love for flora came into context. i havent tried any here in tn. did try azaluas however there is something about the plant that seems to draw all the dogs in the hood to my yard to potty, on thoes plants only. the back yard is fenced because of the boys, but the front yard isnt. aside from shooting them( its the owners fault for letting the dogs run, i dont blame anything on a domesticated animal, they do what they are taught, just like children) i would NEVER do,and putting up a fence..isnt there a plant that will disuade this kind of activity? i remember something just cant recall. so if you know could you please relay it to me.

this is just not right. i go outside to look at my plants( roses etc.) and find i have new growth on my rose bushes. just from 3 days of about 70 degree weather. now i have to decide if im gonna leave it or clip it off and bring it in and root it... my peonies are even sprouting from their "eyes" and they need 45-50 days of cold. this is just weird. my end of the summer bush even looks good, and its suppossed to be dormant now. uhhhhh. my chocolate mint looks good. this is some screwed up winter. come spring i hope i wont have to cut off 150-200 buds off my iris' like i did last spring, because of that fluke freeze we had at the end of april! my yard would have been a sea of iris blooms and my cannas wouldnt have turned all mushy. i may have to plant some spreading juniper in all my beds like ive alread done with 2 of them. this is what drives me crazy. yes i know, it would be a short trip!

I would love to be able to grow an avacado tree and some Eucalyptus trees. Now and then I read up on cold hardy varieties of both and think ... one of these days ......

I've been reading some threads about growing citrus from seed and got a spark of excitment. Somewhere in the back of my mind I'd gotten the idea that the fruit would be sour because of the parent trees being hybrids so grafting has to take place to have good fruit? Is this just a bundle of nonsense and CAN we grow from seed? Like from grocery store fruit or does it have to be from special trees?

Deb

mskitty38583
12-21-2007, 10:26 AM
from what i have read and what members say, you should not grow fruit from grocery store fruit. my ponderosa lemon and the fall glo tangerines i got seeds from were from a greenhouse trees. however i have managed to grow poms from the seeds from a grocery store. actually the seedlings are about 3-4 inches high. im not to sure abouth the avacado (egg) i have. it came from the grocery store, i have grown avacados from store seeds before, just to put them out side and have turtles snap them in half....so i dont know, right now im doing a science experiement, and if it works that will be awesome. happy planting. if your not sure, drop some seeds in dirt, it wont hurt to let it grow,it if dosent produce fruit, youll have some nice green plants.anything green in my book is good to grow... well unless its illegal.. i do recall someone very famous said 'its not easy being green' in our case, its not easy growing green...lol

Even though we plant to make money for a living I still enjoy working with plants. Being outside in great weather with all the passing critters, Birds, Frogs, Iguanas, its never dull. Today wife and I stuck Croton cuttings into 300 4" pots, 3 cuttings per pot, will root two weeks and be sold three months for $1.00 When I read here that a member is paying 19.95 for a 4" potted Naner . . . well, just cannot believe how supplyers overcharge, so rediculous ! That dwarf Cavendish was tissue cultured by a company in Orlando. I've bought them myself when the plant was first developed about 1994 for $1.20 in cell trays of 40. I grew them on into 3 gallon pots and wholesaled them 2' tall for 12.00.

WARNING . . . If you are the kind of fool who falls in love with plants because they are beautifull, very beautiful, then please be carefull and do not, do not look at crotons.org ! Ms. Kitty . . . Merry Xmas Honey !! I hope you and all our friends on the B Org are spending time with family and friends. Wife and I drove down the mountain to visit friends and did a little "hugging". No one should be alone on Xmas. If you are alone, get out . . go to the nearest bar and hug some stranger !

I have been a Croton expert for many years. There exist hundreds of cultivars with every colour immaginable and leaf shapes of many different character. Up north in the nurseries you will see only 2 or 3 kinds. There are many really wierd and beautiful kinds that "have been forgotten" and I'm taking on the mission to bring some back to gardeners! I call them "Endangered Crotons".

Watch the weather reports and if you see a warm spell predicted soon, then quickly order the "Greenhouse Special" and I will include several unusual Crotons.

taylor, i know its illegal there to cut dogwoods, its the states' flowering tree. its kind of like bad ju-ju!!!but i live in tn. and i want to have more dogwoods and i dont want to pay the 45 dollars for a 2 yr.old tree. i have a sacred reverance for these trees. i lived in va. most of my life( here, there, everywhere in va.) so i know the implications of that. why do you think im having such a hard time with cutting my trees. almost makes me cry to think of cutting it, but i would like to have more.

We have a Pink and Multiple Whites.

Actually- we get whites popping up in really random places (Birds...!) and we still don't cut them down. Thinking about transplanting 2 Whites this winter....to where? Who Knows! I need to plant my Japanese Red Maple that is from seed from our big Japanese Red Maple that died 2 years ago for unknown reasons along with all of the neighbors ones....except for the lacey-leaf ones.

Weird...

My 7yr old grand daughter helped me hunt for seeds this morning and before the day is done we'll have them planted in something..... We collected blue Morning Glory and Angel's Trumpet seed pods full of seeds. Both plants grow wild, like weeds here. I didn't even realize that the huge bush that sprang up by the pool last summer was anything but a pretty weed! Every evening we would watch fasinated by the moths that looked like humming birds buzz around the flowers. We left it as it was hanging over one side of the pool looking beautiful! We thought it was the prettiest weed we ever saw! LOL
If anyone wants any of these seed pods for morning glory or angel's trumpet just PM me with your address as there are a lot still on the dead plants outside. I'm assuming the seeds are ok?
Deb
Ok, I've just sat and did alot of reading and looking at pictures and I don't have Angel's Trumpet like I thought. I have Devil's Trumpet. It seems to be related but I think mine is more of the wild flower/weed variety! It stood up tall and leaned over the water like a canopy and was pollinated by huge moths that looked like humming birds. Flowers didn't open up until evening. I don't remember the folige having an unpleasant smell though. I copied a website for you and mine looks exactly like the pics from HarryNJ

Kylie I almost missed your post .... If I don't stay logged onto the forum the new posts I haven't read go away if I can't read them all at once.

Well I guess I'll let the plant stay by the pool as it really looks tropical with the huge leaves and the flowers have traces of light purple. Some of these plants I looked at online don't have as big of leaves so I do like this one... and those moths are amazing! My husband and the grandkids were saying they were humming birds and I sat quietly on the steps close to the plant to watch and it was hard to tell as it was dusk.. but I had never seen a humming bird out at night LOL I had to do a search on them online to figure out the mystery.

I am so ready for spring too!! I have leaf and butter lettuce that just sprouted.

Here are two Walkers Low Catmints (Nepeta racemosa cultivar) that I planted out this morning. I bought them late last spring in 4" pots and then raised them up in 3 gallon pots. It is now January in San Diego, so they are showing some winter color from overnight lows of 35 and 40 (F). Spring through Fall they bloom incessantly if you are frugal with water. Behind them I am building a planter for a bareroot Mohawk Pecan hybernating in the garage.

Well....... :islandsharkbanana: I walk by the pineapples in the store and they all cringe. I'm working on my second failure I think. Didn't have any dirt and the rest of the goodies for the first one so followed step by step directions (with pictures) off the web that ended in a glass of water. I KNOW I've been taught by Logos posts NOT to root in water but it's all I had. It got slimy and the leaves went crispy. Now I have lots of stuff... garden soil, sand, peat moss, spaghum moss, perlite, that rooting powder but didn't have it in the beginning of my second one so it got slimey and the leaves started to die.. and then I scraped the slime off near the root area and put it in 50/50 spaghum moss and perlite and have it sitting next to the heat mat that has a tray on it so can't put it on the heat mat and have a full spectrum light about 10 inches over it and I'm hoping for a turn around .... but ........... we all like pineapples so I'll go buy another one soon.

Today, I potted up a purple passion plant, a Josephs coat, and a sad lil' prince from lowes.

Cookiecows, just tear that top right off that pineapple, strip all the lower leaves off till you see the roots.
Once you see the roots, take off 2 more rows of leaves. It wont hurt the plant. You might have to take off another row of leaves so you have enough stalk to stick in the dirt. If you have some leaves below the dirt, they will rot!
You dont want that, so take off enough lower leaves.

Then stick it right in the dirt! Pack the soil tightly around the stem, and up to the last leaves. Water well and leave it alone.

Place it where you want it to grow. If you pick the pot up often it wont root well, because you'll cause it to have spaces around the stalk where the dirt is, or it will fall over. You want to keep the dirt tightly packed around the stem. Water about every 2wks in winter. Hope this helps. Heres mine...........

Am I supposed to watch for the existing leaves to start growing taller or am I looking for new leaves pushing through? These leaves are dead down to about a half an inch from the base.

magicgreen
01-28-2008, 10:54 PM
Deb, the leaves will start growing longer outward as new leaves start growing from the center. Remember you dont have to cut off the top, just grab ahold and snatch it off!
The top will come off clean compared to cutting it off.

Today I replanted 60 little plugs of various greenhouse plants which I rooted in the last three weeks from my own cuttings. By using 1/2" to 1" cuttings I got 288 per flat of 1" pockets. I was able to place both flats on heating pads and under some suppl. lights at a south window. About 75 have rotted but that leaves me with 500 "free" plants. Now the 60 plug flat goes to the light rack upstairs in the garden/palm room where the fixtures under the top three trays also provide bottom heat. From there they can go to the unheated racks under lights in the basement light room where I store semidormant stuff that needs room temp. I can accomodate more there if I need to move them into 3" pots before spring. I might be able to find room for some in the chockful greenhouse as well.
By rooting them this early I can propagate earlier in less space and then turn them loose when it gets warmer.
It's great to have new life sprouting in the dead of Ohio winter. It's headed for the upper teens tomorrow night and Sunday. The snowdrops are pushing because it was in the 50s a few days ago and a chinese witchhazel has half opened its reddish flowers.

Wow Richard, I know you have a big backyard but what are you going to do with the extra harvest? You have a lot of plants to plant.

Let's see now ...
The tomatoes end up sliced on sandwiches, pizza, in salads; also in sauce (for freezing) and sorbet. The few remaining go to my immediate neighbors so they are encouraged not to feed the wild rabbits. Up until a few years ago, I was growing 50 tomato plants (10 varieties) at a time in trials, so from my perspective I've cut back quite a bit!

The eggplants are grilled, parmesianed, go into a sauce or two, and some wind up in hummus. By the way, the hand-pump olive-oil sprayers are great for grilling or frying vegetables and cut way back on your oil consumption.

The pimentos get stuffed with ground turkey and tomato, then baked. The chili peppers I cook with fresh or dried and send some fresh ones off to a few affectionados. My wife has a colleague at work from Romania and she says that the Bulgarian Carrot are "the kind".

Last year I had about 3 times as much 8-ball squash than I could use, so this year I'm growing only two plants. My daughters like the Acorn squash, but the plants are not heavy producers -- I'll be lucky to get a dozen total.

The cauliflower gets steamed or goes into cauliflower chili soup, and the broccoli is sometimes eaten on the way to the house ...

I've found it takes about 8 bush bean plants to produce enough for two meals a week, so with 10 plants there is also enough to make and freeze some soup or chili with beans (sorry to those in Texas).

I grow the sugar pie pumpkins for cooking and the connecticut field for decorating. I keep the vines from getting over 6 foot in length so each plant produces about a dozen.

O.K., now that covers what I've planted for the first round!

Actually it's just 0.4 acre, but I'm not complaining. In the foreground of the picture below, you see 0.1 acre of switchbacks leading up to a 4' chainlink separating the backyard from the orchard. The orchard is about 130' by 60' at a slope of 12 degrees uphill. There are many deciduous trees which you see are dormant. At the rear of my property is a 30' wide deck, followed by my rear neighbor's Philipino bananas and a macadamia nut orchard. The photo is taken from the second story rear window of the house.

This is the finished version of my seed starting environment. The photo flash makes it look very humid on the inside -- in reality I can see right in.

There is a Hydrofarm "Hot House w/ Heat Mat and 6 inch dome" ( Hydrofarm - Hydrofarm CK64060 Hot House w/ Heat Mat, tray, 72 cell pack, 6" dome (http://www.hydrofarm.com/pb_detail.php?itemid=1899) ) which you can find online for $25-$30. The heat mat does not have a thermostat, so I purchased a Taylor digital cooking thermometer at Target for $12. I put the heat mat on an ordinary light timer. After trial and error, I found that if the heat mat comes on for 1 hour at 11pm, then off for 2 hours, then on for 1 hour, etc. until 9am the soil will stay in the 70 F temperature range.

The light fixture is an inexpensive 2 foot dual bulb unit with a diffuser from Fernie's favorite store for $20. It is a direct-wire kind, so I made a cord by beheading an old extension cord. The frame for the light was constructed from a scrap wood and bolts. The light is also plugged into a timer, set to come on a 7am and off at 7pm. The two bulbs are F20-T12 "Ott-Lite" florescents also purchased from Fernie's favorite store for $6 each.

Tonight they are getting serenaded by The Frank Capp Juggernaut recording "In a Hefti Bag".

Oh, Wow, I've never seen a motorized wheel barrow before.
Is that your own invention?
Knowing you, nothing is impossible.

There are many brands of motorized utility carts and wheelbarrows on the market. In Europe there are varieties that climb stairs, esp. in cities with ancient infrastructure.

The one shown in the photo below is a 6-year old DR Powerwagon which at the time beat the competition by a long shot in every aspect imaginable. It is still going strong and the only repair so far has been to adjust the tension on the brake cable last year. It is a workhorse - consider nearly all the work in photo of my yard below was done entirely by me and the wheelbarrow. Of course, I store it in the garage during rain or fog and this makes a big difference.

The wheelbarrow is made by Country Home Products ( DRŪ Power Equipment (http://www.drpower.com/) ). They also make an impressive chipper/shredder.

Heh heh! Spring in Chicagoland is when the snow melts and it's over 50 degrees. 80 degrees there means summertime!

In Sacramento, Spring is rung in by the bananas taking off :2709: and the Cranes flying North, with the temps in the 60's to 70's...

I guess it's all releative to what you're used to.

The plant man came by today with his pickup full of orchids, bromeliads and roses - with a few other bits and pieces. So I had to buy a named white cattleya and 2 hot red/orange bush roses - the vandas were slightly muddy coloured but he had a huge variety of dendrobiums. I have already bought a dendrobium this week so can't justify another. My neighbour who is worse than me about orchids didn't know he was here - but shot off to see him once I told her he was here. Who can save us from this banana/orchid addiction?

i took 9 canna seedlings out of their green house tray and potted them up in an 18 inch long pot. i have 11 more canna seeds waiting to sprout and i have 2 tx. mountian laurels poking their noses out the dirt. all these seed i got from xavier. all of these were planted a week ago. can you say WOOSA?. it is 60 * here today. unfortunately im not planting anything outside till the first week of may. i dont care how nice it gets out. after the freak freeze we had the last week of april last year, everything can wait an extra week. must be nice cassie for the plant man to come see you. id be in so much trouble..... wish we had one like that here.:2236:. oh and i potted up shays orange bird of paradise that she got at the lawn and garden show. she 'hates' plants but "you cant have a white one and not have an orange one." this coming from someone who wants to constantly bid on nanas in the classifieds, and who has 2 crotons and now a b.o.p. LOL!

Four cuttings of Escallonia "Pink Princess". I just need one for my garden, so if they all take you might see the extras appear here for banana bucks or trade.

Here they are, just prior to going into my little indoor dome-house that I'm also starting veggie seeds in:

well if it wasnt raining so hard i would be outside instead of inside...today im gonna plant 30 strawberry plants i have. they will be planted in pots till i can get their bed ready( that will probable be in the fall.) i have to water nanas and feed them.was hoping to the weather was gonna be a little nicer i wanted to start taking the basjoos and others outside for a few hours a day. time to start getting them ready to go out in a month and a few weeks. so the heater in the den will stay off unless it gets to 50 *f in here. cant wait for spring.
p.s. got a hosta called fried bananas, got that planted today also. i have run out of room in the den, so i had to start putting plants elsewhere in the house. the issue with that is the cats. oh how they love dirt. so i remidied the problem....lots of cyanne and black pepper on the plants and on the dirt. if they get past that im at a loss...LOL!

i finally got my 12 ft. climbing peace rose back into the ground after 2 days of rain. i dug up an old rose bush that wasnt doing well. and i planted 12 cannas after i cleared the ground and turned the dirt over. the new bed where the cannas are is about 4 ft. wide by about 4-5 ft. long. they are on the top part of the bed and my mi. roses are at the bottom. the bed slopes down a hill. i hate it when you have a nice pretty flower bed and the grass weeds pop up right in the middle of it. tomorrow before class i will plant: ee bulbs, dahilas, cannas and a peony( that have to relocated from another part of the yard) and a few other things. im really hoping my cherry tree didnt die( if it did die i will be planting a crabapple tree in its place.i love eating crabapples, yummy!) its funny the things we plant. i love cherry blossoms, but i wouldnt eat a cherry for any thing. i guess i do it to feed the birds and for the blossoms. i might raid my moms yard for some raspberry bushes this weekend. i like their fruit. lol!

Way to go Mskitty! Are you taking or teaching the class?

Today I planted 12" x 12" x 1.5" square stepping stones vertically along my chain fence line, about 8" deep. Those pesky wabbits have been digging under the fence this winter and I'm canceling their visas!

What an excellent idea! We have so many rabbits and groundhogs.

In my area, outdoor cats and small dogs are easy prey for the coyotes. The rabbit population is flurishing because (1) people feed them and (2) the coyotes have learned domesticated animals are easier to catch.

cookie there are very few things that do gross me out.my mom gets ill at me and my dad, we talk about all kinds of things( gross stuff to other people) and my mom smacks both of us in the head. lol. and yes easy prey for coyotes are domesticated animals. there are humane traps that you can get and set. then you have to take them off and let them go. thats the only suggestion i have unless you get a really big dog.

Seeds here too. Campbell's Tomatoes, Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes, Amish Paste Tomatoes, Anaheim Peppers, Green Nutmeg Melon, Cilantro, Jubilee Watermelon, Beets, Hale's Best Melon, Carrots and Radishes. Broccoli is already up and a couple days away from being transfered to the aquaponics bed. The rest will eventually go into plastic baby pools or mixed into landscaping. Not going to have the traditional garden this year.

I've got a bag of red seed potatoes and a bag of yellow onions to plant as soon as the barrels are ready that they're going in. I'll be planting corn in clumps here and there also instead of rows. Yup, that'll be my pretend bamboo! And you know.... crook neck yellow squash can look pretty tropical too!

Today I planted 10 'Angel Red' pomegranates and 5 'Austin' pomegranates. I will plant 8 each of 10 other cultivars later in the week as part of a trial I'm working on with the USDA folks at Davis.

I also did use my neighbors tractor with rototiller to work up the area where I will soon be planting my potted bananas. I think I'll wait a couple more weeks.

Yeah, well, I live in Ecuador. I've got lots of time on my hands, an amazing selection of possible plants that cost little to nothing, and a big yard.

Tomorrow is plant out the beets day, and I'm going to start some passifloras i think...

Sandy, I've been growing the "Florida High Bush" eggplant for a couple of years now, and prefer it to the standard black beauty. Seeds are available from Tomato Growers Supply Company: Eggplant seeds (http://www.tomatogrowers.com/eggplant.htm)

over 100 wild daffies, over 40 red hot pokers, over 30 iris of different colors, over 30 orange parrot tulips. all of these were dug up out of my moms yard and relocated to mine. i gave about 40 wild daffies to my friend and 4 red hot pokers also. and my tomatoes from sandy will be here by the end of the week. i got the little pink cherry tomatoes and the reddish black cherry tomatoes. yummy. btw...saw lots of honey bees today. i have some little blue flowers in the yard (weeds i guess) and they were covered with bees today. i just cant pull the weeds knowing the bees are starving. lol.

I planted 8 each of the following pomegranate cultivars: 'Angel Red' (new patented cultivar), 'Wonderful' (industry standard), 'Parfianka' (also spelled 'Parfyanka' in one case at the repository at Davis, but that's incorrect according to Dr. Gregory Levin who sent it there from Turkmenistan and now residing near Tel Aviv), and 'Sin Pepe'. I have 7 more cultivars to plant over the next few days.

I planted a white butterfly ginger two days ago before I learned that Sandy had them for sale on this site. I hear they are really nice, so check them out!
