That is a seedling Dwarf Cuban Papaya. At least 2 ½ months ago I planted 12 seeds I got from seed suppler . I have planted lots of Papaya in the past.. But this one tray only produced about 6 seedling's, thats a poor germination rate. BUT today I walked to the corner where I stored the hydroponic trays I used to grow them and WAMMO I got 3 more seedlings . Must been from all the rain we been having down here in South Fla! So now the germination rate is %75 ha ha just took a 5 extra weeks to get them to germinate.. Yes I had given up on them ever sprouting .. Papaya seeds don't have a real good shelf life , or at least that has been my experience with them .. These plants usually get to about 7 feet and produce plenty of two pound Papaya... Usually :)

I planted 32 Sugarloaf Pineapples and 4 Del Monte Gold pineapples. I'll get pictures later, but I planted them on a spoil mound. It was kind of rough. I had to dig up and then roto-till the area. I've got about 45 more to plant and that is kind of daunting.

Planted purple beans, snapdragons, watermelon, cantelope, and lavender seeds. Looked in a strong determined tone at the pineapple top sitting in it's pot. Handed out a few fresh mint cuttings I rooted.

The mint rooted all the way through their dirt balls in a week and a half. Incredible.

Also, one of my giant elephant ears is unfurling a leaf!

I received 5 fresh seeds - 1 of which I placed in a small starter greenhouse inside the house, 2 in some soil in my large heated greenhouse and the remaining 2 in the soil of my potted sapodilla inside the house (this little tree seems to be a great "brood" tree as both my mango seeds started there as well as a couple more sapodilla seeds just recently.

This was this morning and overnight it caught a spider and a fly, awesome!
http://www.homegardeningworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/1-1024x612.jpg

If you look closer you can identify both the fly and the spider being dissolved by the enzymes of the pitcher. Kind of cruel but not really is just nature. The fact is we all have to eat something that was once a living thing. It does not matter if it was Lettuce, Pork, chicken,____ you fill the blank. (watch Discovery Channel for details)

So I went to my local Ace hardware to get a new breaker, and they didn't have it and I wandered out to near the nursery door and got nabbed. They used that "Hey, we have some plants on clearance..." tag to ensnare me. I always fall for it.

It filled the bed of my truck completely, where we needed to smuch pots aside to squeeze the last one in. There's Angelonia, Coelus, Agastache and blue salvia(my favorite).

I can't say how many of each yet, because the guy just waved a hand over each section of plants as we walked through the nursery.. "All of these... all of those here..." and then said he'd let me have ALL of them for $25. The Angelonia alone were marked 3/$10 so they would have been over $25 by themselves without all the rest.

So they aren't planted yet, but I'll be working this afternoon to try to get them all into the ground. And I still have to yank out some more grass in the beds, so I figure I'll fall over dead about 814pm.

Also hacked off the dead plants(and dead leaves and pseudostems of bananas) in the yard and hacked my thumb at the same time. This new machete just wants blood every time I use it.

Planted horseradish cuts--36. Healed them off then read elsewhere I should have soaked them. Who knows? They'll be watered well in the morning. If I had ever had a patch that wouldn't die I'd be more optimistic that these would take.

Finally got 8 (5 white/3 red) sugarcane starts in dirt--got them from someone who'd soaked them then let them dry out so they may not happen. Stuck some cherry (not sure what kind) and orchid tree cuttings in a pot after dipping them in Rootone. I probably waited too long to do this but at least I tried. Next time I go where I'm going to be handed cuttings I'm taking filled pots and Rootone with me so there's no down time.

Just a normal walk in the park  :p Might stay alive?
That fuzzy gray plant looks like Stachys byzantina (Lamb's ears). If so, know that it is not a forest plant but escaped someone's garden. Not hard to control but they do seed a lot. (There's a non flowering variety.) They're not pretty dried IMO but you can do so and use it in arrangements.

So you got 36 cuts from the root.........neato..!

So you got 36 cuts from the root.........neato..!That wasn't my plan but was the result. I figure if just a smidge left in a bed can get you in trouble, some will grow. I didn't split thick roots; I did cut them to 1.5 to 2" lengths. I did split a couple of crowns. Everything I found discussed 6 to 8" pencil roots; these were thick but I could see "nubs" on them. (I didn't realize that commercial farmers lift the plants 1 to 2 times a season and trim to ensure fat roots--no wonder mine were always an alien looking mass.)

My grand experiment involved using 3x3 pots and burying 1.5 to 2"; all but the bud sections were placed horizontally. (Any clue how long I have to wait to see if they'll sprout?) No, I daren't put them in the ground where I am; if so, I would have planted them like fig branches in a trench then cut them apart between leaves after they came up. Kinda hoping very few take because I'm out of big pots and decent dirt so I'll be scrambling to find new homes for any that do. And then again I'm hoping for 100%.

We'll see....

The Question is: Will daily urination from my dog and I kill either?

other is shorter (7'-20') YELLOW

Amethyst beans, Kiwano melon, Ananas melon, Banana melon, pepino melon,(I like melon!), bulls Blood beets(for dye), potatoes, blue sedum and red hen-and-chicks so far(in the last couple days).

Today I should get indigo, woad and tobacco seeds into the seedling trays.

I also got one of those carpets you roll out and water and it turns into lavender plants. I don't really believe it'll work but for $6 and lavender plants... I had to give it a try. Seems like it's drying out way too fast to grow, but... we'll see.

Edit: Also I put three types of sunflower in the ground and morning glories(3 varieties) into seedling pots.

Well as we can't seem shake winter - we had 6" of snow 2 weekends ago that turned to rain, only to snow again this past weekend, which has now melted away with more rain - I have resorted to starting the seeds for my gardens to help with the urge to get outside and start the "spring clean up" :)

To start the seeds I had to set up a room in the basement with lights and fans and so far most of the seeds have started germinating (mostly vegetables but with a mixture of unusuals such as mountain papaya and banana yucca etc.). But the big surprise were the Jicama seeds that I planted about 3 weeks ago. Not only did they NOT take the 1 to 5 months to germinate that I was told (actually they took less than a week to sprout) but I have since had to plant them into 1gallon pots and give them something to climb as the tallest in now about 8" tall and growing fast.

FYI, Pachyrhizus erosus, commonly known as Jicama or Mexican yam, or Mexican turnip, is the name of a native Mexican vine, although the name most commonly refers to the plant's edible tuberous root.

Yet trying not to collect plants, I stupidly wandered into Lowes discounted plant section where a fairly happy Yellow Wing Hibiscus with a bloom and a bud called to me and begged me to take her home. She was only $1; yes, I caved. On the way home I began counting stems--5! From experience I was pretty certain that mean 5 individual plants; I was right. All of them are now in pots. Realizing that FL summer is fast approaching and that my tomato seedlings may be too late I picked up a double stemmed/2 plant German Johnson at Ace (I purposely chose that one pot because I know I can divide it and I wasn't about to pay $3.49 plus tax for one stinking weed). Surgery accomplished and 2 pots, which will be set in indirect light for a week or so, are watered. Why German Johnson? Because the only other choices were OPs/Heirlooms I already have. Not that I have that many...I so need to get settled and get my nursery license so I can introduce Floridians to real tomatoes!

Peppers have been in here for nearly a month. I got so discouraged buying plants only to have them die last year that I just started tossing cores from red peppers in the dirt. I ended up with easily 30 plants! Left half in Jacksonville and brought the rest with me. I've got peppers on my largest one--the one I babied in a pot. The others are perking up and blooming also. My sole jalapeno was one of more than 30 but something ate my experimental lemon seedlings to the dirt and only this guy survived. I also have beans in the pot with the pepper but I think I'll let those go to seed.

I wish I started it when the site started over a year ago. It would be really cool to look back on now. But hey, may as well start it now, right? :)

Today I planted a pink guava tree into the ground and I potted up five screw pine seedlings.

What other plants (besides bananas), if any, did you plant today?
The thread for bananas is here:

Wonder if grocery store garlic would work as well.

Yeah always separate the cloves and plant those but it has to be done about 3 days before you plant them. Try to get some of the root end on each clove then set them someplace cool and dry.

I read that they use a chemical on the garlic at stores to give them a longer shelf life and the chemical makes it difficult for them to grow. But we did have 2 garlics in the fridge last year that didnt get used and they sprouted lol. Mom just tossed them but thats when I decided I wanted to try growing it.

Btw I did a lot of reading about garlic. Your in zone 8a so the best time for you to plant it is February or March. If you get any frost there then you need to plant it one month before the first frost. You can plant it in the spring too but it wont get as big and you lose a lot of the flavor too. Just plant each clove pointy end up and 2" deep and 4" apart in soil with lots of organic stuff and nitrogen. It will sprout in the spring and it will make a whole new bulb full of cloves from May to June.

Im gonna keep 2 cloves from each garlic and plant those. That way I will always have garlics to plant.
Oh I almost forgot. Garlic is a insect repellent so you wont have any issues with bugs - on the garlics or other plants that are near them.
Good luck with your garlic project. :D

Yeah I really wont know if that works till next summer since I never planted garlic before.

I was reading a newspaper article and I found more helpful information. I would post a link but its not in English but this is what I learned.

1. Rotate every year and dont return to the same area till after 5 years.
2. Never plant where onions were planted. Also not where nightshades like tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant were growing because the garlics could get Fusarium.
3. Its okay to plant them where melons, pumpkins, squash, zucchini, cabbage, or legumes were growing. They really like where strawberries were growing.
4. Use a sandy loamy soil but not too loose. In hard soil they can get squeezed up out of the ground in the winter and freeze.
5. No manure before planting. Prepare the soil with 20-30 grams of superphosphate & 20 grams of potassium fertilizer per square meter of soil.
6. You should also use 10 grams of ammonium nitrate per square meter too.
7. Garlic hates shade + moisture. That combination can be fatal.
8. To prevent diseases soak the cloves for 2-3 hours in a pink solution of potassium permanganate.
9. To be even safter you can also soak them for 2-3 minutes (never longer) in 1 tbsp salt per gallon of water or 1 tsp copper sulfate solution per 2 litres of water.
10. Never press the cloves into the ground when planting. Pressure can damage the part that makes the roots. Just put them in the holes then cover them with the soil.
11. Mulch the area with 2-5 cm of peat humus or sawdust. Remove that in the spring. The mulch will hold the snowcover and helps to keep them warm.

Show me a horticultural study published in a peer-reviewed monograph or journal that verifies any one of those results. In your search, I believe you will find the opposite.

All 11 points are wrong? Thanks for the heads up. I havent read any horticultural studies because mostly I have just been looking for advice from other gardeners. So maybe for garlic I get bad advice.
I will Google for horticultural studies about garlic.
EDIT. I have ordered more garlic. I will ignore the information in the article when I plant those and learn which method works best.

Good plan. Use a fertilizer that contains micronutrients from the electrolytic series (copper, zinc, iron) and most of the disease problems will not be an issue. I think you're already doing this anyway. Aliums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allium) are rarely bothered by pests except some varieties of grubs. Keeping your soil pH around 6.0 to 6.2 will mostly eliminate this problem. Of course you do not want to plant tuberous plants in hard clay soils -- nor would you plant any other food producing plant in that soil. Aliums will freely interbreed, and as a consequence do not rely on seed for reproduction of next years crop. Propagation by extra (or conserved) tubers (or saved fingers of garlic) usually works well. Alliums and most tubers are heavy feeders in comparison to leafy produce, etc. Start out with an acid-forming high nitrogen formula and about 3 months or by mid-summer -- which ever comes first, supplement with a high phosphate formula and plant hormones.

Finally got the garden in this weekend and last night:

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h137/funkthulhu/20150602_064747_zpsnd879w5l.jpg

3 kinds of cucumbers across 8 mounds
4 kinds of tomatoes across 11 plants
3 kinds of chilis across 12 plants
4 brussels sprouts
8 cauliflower
zucchini
green onions (not confident these will do anything)
Sweet Basil
Sage
Pineapple Sage
Dill
Oregano
Peppermint
Lemon Balm
And room for a few others if I find something....

banana hybrid. :)

Lowe's supplier for fruiting bananas (and other subtropicals) in the western U.S. is LaVerne Nursery Inc (http://www.lavernenursery.com/). It is LaVerne that prints the labels for Lowe's. Decades ago LaVerne ordered Goldfinger (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Musa_%27Goldfinger%27) from a tissue culture supplier (AgriStarts (https://www.agristarts.com)). At the time, AgriStarts was selling Dwarf Namwa (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Musa_Dwarf_Namwah) as Goldfinger. LaVerne has kept propagating that cultivar under the name Goldfinger and even their sales manager can't get them to change the name.

Thanks Darkman.

These kind of ferns would do well around the rock in your backyard......I think it could be overwintered outside in your area.

I think fern is a 7-8 year old plant.
This plant is is a tree fern (http://www.forestferns.co.uk)reaching 20+ feet in optimum growing conditions.
I put a link for extra reading:)

I picked it as a 1 gallon container plant for $4.99 at the Jensen Beach, Fla. Home Depot.

Scientific Name: Xanthosoma Sagittifolium

An herbaceous perennial plant. It has underground stem, from which sprout swollen, lateral and horizontal shoots, known as cormels. It is oriented to human consumption. The corms are used for human and animal food, thanks to its nutritional content. A countless number of dishes are prepared with it, such as: soft drinks, beverages, soups, pastas, salads, sweets, breads, cakes, cookies and ice-cream.....

A very nutritious food!....:bananarow:

Malanga.

I picked mine up at the market and have grown them ever since for the awesome tropical foliage.
Never have eaten them though.

Easy to grow and overwinter in containers in zone 5/6.

Btw your plants are beasts....Looking good.:woohoonaner:
Waiting for " New corms #3"

.This is a malanga repot carnage photo......I should eat them instead of repotting them.
For Sunday breakfast I might make Goetta, eggs and hash browns( shredded malanga) and toast.

Can you smoke them?
