You are very brave to have tried Citrus in Florence. I've been there many times over the years, enroute to Depot Bay and Lincoln City. In decades gone by the Kernville Steakhouse was excellent esp. for local fish. I took a look just now on Google street view and the area has changed quite a bit!

I planted a small bottle palm tree I bought at Lowes for $12.47 from regular $24.95! I think this is just a cool lookin' palm tree! And a Carrie Mango tree in the back yard. It's almost 4 ft tall. I'm a little nervous becuz this is the first time I'm growing a mango tree, cuz I just love eating this fruit, along with my wife & kids! It's also very expensive here at the local HEB grocery store. If possible can any mango expert here give some tips of caring for this tree. I would appreciate it greatly! Now, my friut trees in the back yard is set- I have 2 banana plants, 4 citrus trees, the new Carrie mango tree! I would love to plant more, but I have a small back yard!

183 chestnut trees and 1 Royal Rainier cherry (with the help of a backhoe and planting crew of five workers). The chestnut tree planting is part of an expansion project since I had this part of my field cut off from the rest of my farm (gas field operator added this road last year).
They are spaced only 7' apart and I will remove half of them in about 4-5 years.

Hey Patty, I can send you some small bulbs of the Tacca integrifolia if they can slip past the post. I know a couple of places why there's heck lot of them like grass. I just yanked 2 big plants for a sucker friend who pay $18 for 2 at some nursery. I told him to check with me about endemics before buying but he didn't listen. Fished out 3 water lily corms and potted them, they are now in the "nursery tank".
My ginger (edible) bed now has 10 shoots from 2" to 8".
The plants rescued from Lowes (1/4 price) have all responded to sun water and a bit of food and have started to bloom.
The butterfly garden is in now and my night blooming jasmine has buds.

Too soon to plant out...we has a blizzard last night & snow on ground :(
Planted "Ailsa Craig" exibition onions, they're on both sides of the garden. These grow to impressive softball size. My smallest bananas will be going next to them. 80 rhubarb gallon pots, 18 hanging baskets, 30 flats of tomatoes/peppers/eggplants.
Last week Dad came down and helped me and he did 250 pots of ornamantal grass (gallons) and 72 butterfly bushes (gallon pots). I can't thank him enough. At the same time Mom and I did 250 flats of tomatoes in a few days time. So we're almost ready for spring. But it's supposed to be snow flurries again on Monday

Are you very confident it will grow okay at your location? I had considered growing a sapodilla but have been hesitant as I'm not sure it would survive here outdoors (normal annual lows are 26-28F) without some significant protection. You've got me thinking again, though! ;)

Great choice, I've grown that even up here successfully with only minor protection as season extension. (cold frame).
This is my first try at Sweet Potato so I'm not sure what to expect. I'm hoping I'm not planting to early or late for South Florida. I ordered these so long ago that I had just about forgotten about them. They came in the mail this weekend so I had to quickly slap together another bed for them to go in as the rest of the veggie garden is filling out.
Fingers crossed...
Tom , I don't know about growing in your zone but one thing about sweet potatoes is that they're prone to cracking due to water stresses. Keep them evenly moist throughout the season. Wet to dry and visa versa will split them. Good luck. Beauregard makes great mashed and fries too.

This makes the total of plants in my living room:
6 Pattypan squash 6"
6 Hubbard squash 8"
4 pumpkin "Big Max" 12"
7 bell pepper 6"
6 cucumber
? green onions
? marigolds
Edit: these were transplanted over the past three weeks.

So today, being that I SO want to grow unusual tropicals here in zone 5, I decided to try something I had been reading about. After I was done setting this up, I realized I probably picked everything out wrong, but considering the back breaking (or potentially back breaking) work, I went small to start ... if it DOES actually work, next year I will fracture something to get it totally right. But if it fails, I will not be rubbing down with BenGay and sucking Advil like candy for no reason! ;-)
TIRES. There are tires everywhere in land fills and all over the sides of the highways in areas, and from what I read, Canada is great for culturing their potato crops early in mulch inside tires ... in zones as high up there as 2!! So, for those of you who haven't read about tires, just a quick summary ... the idea is to dig out a hole deep enough (in Canada anyway) to sit three tires on top of each other inside the hole ... the sun, being hotter than it feels in winter months actually heat up the rubber and start their little potato"lettes" growing way early in the year to extend their growing season by something like four months. It creates an open topped "hot house" of sorts.
So, Ang being the inventive and creative sort, thought ... if zone 2 can grow potatoes that early (and later too) in the year, why can't I winter over some of the corms, tubers and bulbs of my fave plants outside in tires in zone 5???? Right?? Seems logical. At least to me anyway. With a little extra mulching for heat retention and exposing the tire edge, it should work, right?
Well, I used an R14 tire (kinda small), and then like the rocket scientist that I am not, picked, of ALL things, Xanths, to plant in it. I used only one tire, not three, as I only had one on hand. Like most insane plant persons Helll bent on a project, I could not wait til tomorrow to acquire any more tires (although I will get more to do more beds tomorrow)! Xanthosomas being HUGE, with a small tire for a "bed", may not work out at all, and I realized this after I got everything done and stood back to admire my handiwork. What a dummy! But anyway ...
Visit my album to see the tire attempt as I have not figured out how to get photos embedded here yet. I will post a few pics as soon as I am done here.
I dug out and placed the tire with the sidewall at ground level. Remember, you have to rely on that tire to heat up in winter and it can't do that very well if it is totally submerged in soil. Then I filled in the entire tire itself with the dirt from the hole I dug, leaving the rocks and some assorted plant leavings from mowing the lawn. I packed it really well to prevent air pockets inside the tire to kill roots. Then I filled in along the tire's edge on the outside, making sure to fill it in tight. Included some rocks and debris then more soil from the original hole.
Next I mixed a batch of ProMix (my favorite soil) with very light spatterings of pebbles, heavy compost and some peat. Filled in the center of the tire, once again double checking to make sure the inside of the tire itself was packed full. Planted the Xanth in the center and then added about two to three inches of red cedar mulch over the top of the whole thing, including the tire sidewall, for summer "looks". When colder weather knocks the ears down, I will go and scoop the mulch off the tire itself and throw it to the center for added insulation, leaving the sidewall exposed to the sunshine. I have not decided yet if I will actually cover it further. Will have to do more research on that. Maybe a slighty raised glass pane or something.
Tomorrow I am going to do this again (time permitting) and plant some C. illustris in the tire. They are SO hardy, I would think they will surprise me. But then again, this whole thing might be me grasping at straws!!! :::sigh:::
Thoughts? Further ideas??

Today I planted a Lord Howe Island Banyan tree. Jeff Earl gave it to me yesterday. he had just moved it up from a 15 gallon pot into a larger stone pot and he had a hard time pulling it out as the roots had really filled up the pot. It's about 5' tall and the trunk is about 1" in diameter. He just didn't have room for it and told me it should grow like a weed until we get a winter down to 24F or so. In the meantime, I can dream of building a tree house in it and swinging from vines some day when I'm really old! LOL

The tires thing works well for tomatoes here. It insulates the roots better than mulch - I've had frost-damaged ones come back out of tires and produce. We used the big tractor tires when we could get them, but smaller ones work fine too. /lateresponse

Jazz, your use of the word reminds me of how terms can mean different things in different areas. About 70 miles to the west of me is wacky San Francisco (IMO) where they scream about the heat wave if it gets to 75F! And then, in my area, we call this stuff that messes up your hair a "Delta breeze" even though this so-called breeze is often blowing 15mph or more.
Okay, back on topic....an hour ago I did my first ever division of a heliconia, the variegated "Tiger" heliconia (sorry, I can't remember those fancy genus and species names). I bought this plant a year or so ago and it was busting out of its 5 gallon pot. I'm took off two cuttings with well-rooted shoots just like my expert friend from Puerto Rico told me to and am going to be cautious on the watering until they're growing as he tells me I can rot them real easy. One will go to a friend and the other will be a back-up because I want to try growing one of these outside near my home's heating unit. Wish me luck!

At Mike's house I made a 3' X 30' (or more) "tropical Island" w/ 4 nanas, 7 brugmansias, tiny EE's, scattered reg & red caster beans, colorful swiss chard, & some cosmos along sides. When 4 caladiums sprout in pots, they will go there too. Should look nice if & when we ever get summer.
I never heard of Kate Moss. Maybe I should plant some of that too?

I have about 1/2 an acre
But I've converted a lot of spaces to gardens
I have a post & beam fence along the front & the side
I hate mowing along a fence so the front fence has a garden
It curves around to the side about 16'
Now I'm extending it another 16'
Eventually it will extend all the way along the side fence
I'm only extending it 16' long by 2' wide

As of this morning i had 5 out of 9/10 of my papaya seeds germinated. They are in one of my 45gal smartpots. I was going to move my larger papaya tree but decided it looks too sick and better to start over. The larger one had fruit on it last summer when I got it but stopped growing/fruiting after transplanting it. I'm not planning on ever transplanting these. Just thin them out.

I picked up 10 Japanese Maple seeds today
So I am starting the process of growing from seed
So maybe in 60 days.....
Use hot tap water, put the seeds in the water, then just let the water cool to room temperature with the seeds soaking in the water for 24 hours.
Next place the seeds in a plastic freezer bag in damp sand, peat, vermiculite, whatever you happen to have on hand. Any of these things will work. The medium you use should be damp, not soaking wet. Poke a few holes in the bag. Place the bag in your refrigerator. Do not put the bag too far back in your fridge where the seeds might freeze, you don’t want it quite that cold
The bag should remain in the fridge for 90 days. Or until the seeds start to sprout. Check the bag once a week after 60 days or so

I didn't plant these per se. I haven't seen a donkey's tail in ages. Yesterday, in the most unexpected place (Walmart) I came across two well established plants nestled in a top shelf filled with various petunias. I am so pleased to have a chance to grow sedum morganianum again. Thick, overlapping leaves trail down to form a "donkey's tail". Beautiful--and fragile. I hung the containers underneath my Boston fern which hangs from a low overhanging branch of my neighbor's tree. I couldn't have wished for a more perfect place.

It must be the right time for me to get reacquainted with sedum morganianum. It's been many, many years since I've caught sight of one; lately since moving to Sacramento, I've been thinking, and hoping to find these; I found the image above less than a week ago, and late yesterday afternoon, I found my plants waiting for me at Walmarts. Quite serendipitous really since I was shopping for mandevilla and other flowering container plants.

I just potted up 70 seedlings of Magnolia macrophylla all from seed from my tree planted about 1962. This has the largest leaf of any deciduous tree in continental US, up to two feet here, larger in the south. It blooms in June with the leaves and the 6 petaled flowers can be 20" across. It looks very tropical. It is native to southern Ohio but this one has survived 20 and 30 below 0 F. over the years, including 14 below this winter. (My Basjoo banana clump of 7 yrs. died outright.)
This is the first time I have germinated the seed myself and soon there will be a new crop. It has never reseeded itself. Something apparently eats all of the thousands of seeds as soon as the fruits fall. The fruits are bigger than oranges. It should be much more widely grown and I hope to contribute to that. I have had some to sell periodically, in the past.
Thanks Eric!!!
I had sent Eric a few banana plants a few weeks back, this huge box arrived in the mail today.

We were trading a banana or 2 that I wanted to give a good home for a "Robert Young" bamboo. When I opened the box I was happy to find a "Lagniappe" , 2 actually, there were also 6 " naked lady" liliies as well as a beautiful "Lipstick" canna. The lilies being named so because they first produce foliage which then dies down to let a flower stalk emerge.......hence, the naked lady.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it.
ok: One more story.......... see the two placid looking dogs in the photos? The Rottweiler is a AKC canine good citizen dog as well as a certified therapy dog and has visited hospitals, schools etc. The Swiss Mountain Dog is currently doing dog shows and would have been on tv in a big show fimed last week in Harrisburg PA but came in second in one of the majors.............good pups right?
Nope, they're currently on my (poop) list. Right before the mail came I went out to walk them and as soon as we got out the door they spot this guy I've never seen before walking a maybe 70 lb Lab puppy. These idiots decide to make a bee line for the puppy as usual, both being fairly gregarious, 220 lbs of charging dogs and me with treadless sneakers on the wet lawn was not good............. as I ski'd acrooss the front lawn and stumble across the street yelling "They're freeeeeeeeindly" he starts running away ........... mysterious stain growing in the back of his shorts............eyes as big as pie plates.......... I hit the curb accross the street ,next thing I know after the "stars" clear I'm lying looking up straight in to the sun both stupid animals sitting next to me heads cocked to one side like the old RCA phonograph dog. Now I'm stuck home , hip is purple, can barely walk and am afraid to look at my big toe.
Next time I'm getting a goldfish!

I think I have that lily you call "naked lady" but I was told it's called a 'surprise' lily. When it looks like it died, a flower shoots up.
Hi Patty in Wisc (still looking for that state )! Surprise is a Real good name for it. I was surprised as bleep the first time I saw those stems coming up out of bare ground  ! I think "Surprise" is common in horticultural groups while "Naked Lady" is more rampant in bars & saloons :ha: !
Just kidding :)...., I think.

Saturday morning: repotted staked bougainvillea. this plant has been growing exceptionally well, with all new leaves that are now good sized; lately leaves started to turn yellow and drop. I figured it's getting too much water from from the auto sprinkler which turned on each evening. I was puzzled though that, along with the drop leaf, the plant also has leaf wilt. I took it out its pot to see that the plant was wet through topsoil and the center, but bone dry all around the sides and bottom. I gave the root ball a good soaking and repotted. I also moved it away from the sprinkler which apparently soaked the top soil nightly without watering through the sides and bottom of the plant.

Richard,
With the move to Sacramento, I now have the time, space, and climate my plants deserve. I'd say I'm a "reformed" gardener and am simply and literally turning over a new leaf. "Green gardener" in my case means novice--my experience with indoor plants has been less than "award-winning"; I pretty much neglected my plants--poor things. I'm hoping to change that, and I'd say I'm in pretty lofty company here, you guys are awesome master gardeners. That's enough to inspire and motivate a reformed gardener like me. :)
P.S. I'd like to add a banana plant to my collection, just hanging back until I can find one that I can properly take care of in a container. Maybe a dwarf namwah?

I have 3 satsuma trees that have not bloomed this year there putting on new growth all the time but no blooms i have a small armstrong satsuma that has 4 large ones i dont know what to do.
A new Rex Begonia I got from Paul (a neighborhood friend of mine) !! Not sure if it's Rex, though, or Angel Wing. Will add a pic to this post as soon as I get some time. Maybe someone here can identify it.... I hope :).

I planted 4 native plants today:
Chinese Celery (Oenanthe javanica) -- which is native to Asia and Australia. This is a member of the parsley tribe, but one of the few members of the Oenanthe genus with edible leaves. All the roots of Oenanthe species contain serious toxins.
Peruvian Sage (Salvia discolor) -- native to the Andean mountains of south America. It has broad, smooth silvery leaves with a stunning black inflorescence.
Sweet Woodruff (Galium odoratum) -- native to Europe and Western Asia.
Wonga-Wonga or True Bower Vine (Pandorea pandorana) -- native to tropical Asia, Pacific, and Australia.

this week, i did the following plant work in my yard:
Friday night: after the day's heat, trudged off to Home Depot for perlite, orchid, fast draining soil; prepared soil mix for and potted 2 ensetes and 1 kru bought from justin ducat's divorce plant sale. my first bananas!
also picked up 2 large cannas from HD; both plants sat in the passenger's seat of my '96 Miata (top down, of course).
Friday afternoon: removed stake from gold-colored bougainvillea and wired branches to new 4' X 8 fence trellis.
Earlier in week (or late last week, can't remember which): picked up three 4' X 8' trellis from HP; attached trellises to fence panels, wired red bougainvillea to trellis close to back fence.
also picked up two potted hybrid tea roses.

After hitting the nurseries for 1/2 or less price plants, planted a Blue Danube Stokesia, a Sliver Scrolls Heuchera, a Neon Rose Phlox, a Wood Spurge ( Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae),, and a Yellow Moonbeam Coreopsis. All together got less than $30 in 3 qt containers.

I played all weekend, last week. I went to Grand Junction, CO for a NAFEX (north american fruit explores) conference. It was a fun and I learned a lot.
I did some bud grafting, peach and apricot. Grafted some peaches with budwood from a very nice peach at my cousin's. Cultivar unknown. It was a volunteer peach tree with all the characteristics one might want in a peach. Also budded some Harrow Diamond peaches, and some Jerseycot apricots.

Richard, how long do you think you'll keep your avocado in a 25 gallon pot? I've got six of them in 15 gallon pots and don't think 2-3 of them will survive outdoors without protection, so I've been wondering about how long I should try keeping them in pots.

I finished potting up my pitaya cuttings today. I've got 39 pots with 20 varieties and will see how they do in NorCal (USDA zone 9, Sunset zone 14), though they will be protected this winter.

I'm hoping the roots are o.k. for 1 year. The weather here should not be a problem.
