Yes, I am curious how do you make olive oil. And what do you use olive oil. Sorry if I am ignorant but what I know is the coconut oil that came from coconuts abundant in the island.
Dalmatiansoap
11-12-2009, 04:20 PM
We use it for salads (extra virgin), cooking, grill,.... all but frying. Its imposiblle to prepare sea fish of any kind without olive oil. There is even old saying that goes like this: Every fish swims three times. First time in sea, second time in olive oil and third in wine:ha::ha::ha:.
Dressing for our salads are from Olive oil and wine vinegar, all green dishes gets few drops on the end of blansing, etc.

Is it the rest of giant trunk??? Perfect for Druid's place of cult :D
About fruits - is it collected down when they are dark I mean ripe or they can be green?
Dalmatiansoap
11-12-2009, 04:49 PM
It depends on purpose.
If U want to eat them, they have to be black but for the best oil quality they have to be mostly redish.
Yes that is old trunk. More than 1000 years old. Who knows maybe Druids did use it, hahaha :)

Jeeze Ante, that's brutal! I use to work laying the rebar for concrete slabs and tilt ups and had to carry heavy amounts of rebar on my shoulders, but never had to walk up any trails with it. And you want us to come help......I'm staying right here! ;)
Btw, how far is the hike with that 60 pounds on your shoulders and how many bags per day do you carry?
Dalmatiansoap
11-13-2009, 04:04 PM
Thanks folks,
isnt brutal as it looks like. Hike is maybe some 50m till upper road where car is and good picker can pick to two bags a day. Its my duty to carry that ;). Deffinitivly will do that better them my wife or father today ;).
Yes U can say its old-fashioned but its only way. U cannot use almost any mecanization in field area like this but I dont mind. Each olive is picked by hand and trees arent stressed that way. Imagine plant shock after been shaked? Lifetime is 10-15 years and we have some more 1000 y/o. It isnt comercial but does realy everything in life has to be so? Thats why we live today in a way we do. Life is slower here but much sweeter this way ;).
djmb74, U R allways welcome. U dont have to come here for help, come for vacation.
We ll make some nice grill with lot of precious golden oil ;)

OK. Let me keep my story rolling:ha::ha:
Today is the Olive mill day:nanadrink:
Car is loaded with baskets full of corps, canisters are ready, there is nothing to wait anymore. Allmost forget, junior is ready too:ha::ha:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=26693&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=26693)
I have to note here that taking pictures isnt allowed in the mill but somehow few pix ended in my camera. Apologises for quality ;)
The production line:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=26695&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=26695)
After washing olives are mashed in smooth paste in monitored proces where temperatures mustnt go over 37C to provide quality in minerals in oil. Later in process pasta goes in fast centrifuge are where oil is extacted from water and pasta leftowers:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=26696&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=26696)

Soap has lavender aroma, I use lavender essential oil for aromatizing soap, it has good medical value, smells wonderfull and its also our Meditterranian symbol ;). One of the best ways to aplly Olive oil on the skin is thrue the soap and its hypoallergenic too. Its made from only four components, Olive oil, lavender oil, water and lye. I used to make goat milk soaps but there wasnt enough interest for them so I stoped but recently more peoples asked for them so I might start again this Spring.

It will be used for "Kantarion Oil" production. I dont know other name for it but its mix of Extra Virgine Olive Oil and Hypericum perforatum herb (St John's wort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypericum_perforatum)) and its used in medicine for dermatological and psyhical problems. Oil has deep red colour and its known here as Virgin Mary herb Oil.

Its in range of 12-20%, depends on many factors. We had mostly 14% this year. So for a 100kg of raw olives we get 14kg of oil (15,5 liters).

I just pm'd Ante to buy 3 bars of soap & a bottle of olive oil & he said he can't tke money fron paypal. How do we compensate Ante for what he sends us? It costs him $25-30 $$ to send a yellow sub!
No way, how can I be the man when Ante is the man! :ha:
Let's see, payment for awesome olive oil, hmmm, gold, silver, liqueur, plants, maybe gifts for his kids?

I didn't eaven have the slightest idea how an olive looked when it wasn't in a glass yar in the supermarket.
The olives that I buy in the supermarket are not round. Is that because they loose some of the original oil/moisture? or is that another type of olive.

That is table type of olives. Some are grown for oil production and some only for consumation.
For example our sort of olives U canot prepare for food while are still green only whan the are fully ripe. And its also big diff in taste between green and black (salted) Olives.

Ashes, beware Soapy, they are very alkaline, more than 95% of all plants I've ever grown dies out at such concentration. 1kg of ashes can be mixed together with acidic soils, water, compost and this entire mixture would weigh up to 50kg. So you see the ratio. ;)

These are 3 y/o plants almost 170 cm high and price range is about 13-15€ per plant. Same rare spicie that produce high quality pollen are about 45€.
One y/o seedlings are about 5-8€.
What about your prices in Poland?

The price is very changeable - about 21€ per plant (half of your size) and as big as yours..... well its hard to say.
But here we have for sale ususally wild olives, there are ornamental, container plants and nobody expects fruits.
I know one guy who whave it in the garden but he lives close to the seaside where winters are ususally mild in comparte to other parts of the country, nevertheless his olive looks like 'bonsai'.

Just a note that Olive oil isnt just for food. Its a "way of living":ha:
Most all of the applications for Olive Oil listed below require only a small amount of Olive Oil. Olive Oil is not only an excellent product to have around for our culinary creations, it's a smart buy because you can use it in place of so many things as an extremely economic alternative (and it's an environmentally conscious choice).
Olive Oil For Cooking
Olive Oil makes a great ingredient for pretty much any dish. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate Olive Oil (and replace other unhealthy oils) into our food.
•People are always skeptical, thinking there will be a funny bitter taste, but you can replace the vegetable oil called for in a cake, with Olive Oil. The cake will actually taste better and be much lighter -- it's a fantastic substitution.
•Olive Oil is always a healthier alternative to butter. Add fresh herbs (or just serve it plain!) to a small plate of olive oil for dipping bread instead of slathering it with butter. It also makes for a nicer presentation at dinner parties as well!
•Olive oil makes the best salad dressing! Always a favorite, is Olive Oil mixed with fresh lime juice, salt and pepper. That's it! Add a couple of tablespoons of vinegar for the added health benefit of lowering the GI properties and if you like a little extra zing.
•Cooking spray can ruin pans. So put Olive Oil in a spray bottle and use it to prepare your pans for non-stick cooking.
•Olive Oil is excellent for preparing grilled vegetables. Throw all the vegetables you want to grill in a bowl, drizzle Olive Oil over them, sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix to coat and grill.
Olive Oil for the Skin
We all Know Olive Oil is good for the skin, particularly when you ingest it. However, here are some other beneficial uses for Olive Oil externally for skin.
•Olive Oil can remove makeup.
•Olive Oil can be applied directly to your skin to moisturize it.
•Olive Oil can be used on your feet to help get rid of calluses and tough spots.
•You can use Olive Oil on your fingertips to moisturize and soften cuticles.
•Use Olive Oil to get rid of that knobby feeling skin on your elbows.
•Mix Olive Oil with sea salt or sugar to make a skin exfoliating scrub for your body and/or face.
Olive Oil Around the House
Olive Oil is also a great non-toxic and natural item to use around the house. We have lots of young children and pets running around our households and we have to always be cautious about what is accessible to them. Here are some ways to use Olive Oil in place of some toxic/chemical alternatives.
•Olive Oil can be used to oil creaky doors and creaky toys instead of WD-40.
•Olive Oil can be used to polish brass and silver.
•Mix Olive Oil with lemon juice or orange juice in a spray bottle to polish your wood furniture. If you add vinegar to the Olive Oil instead of the citrus juice, it can clean and shine a hard wood floor. (For either of these applications, test a small hidden area first.)
•Olive Oil can remove paint. You have to let it soak a bit.
Olive Oil On Your Hair
•Olive Oil can deep condition your hair. After shampooing, apply Olive Oil to wet hair and let it sit for about five minutes. Rinse well.
•Olive Oil can help take the frizz out of hair. Apply about a dime size amount to DRY frizzy hair and work through.
•Olive Oil can help you get gum and candy out of your kids hair....or yours.
Medicinal Properties of Olive Oil
•Our mother always told us that Olive Oil could be used in the ears to help relieve ear pain from an ear infection. We didn't believe her, but checked it out and it turns out, Olive Oil can be used to clean the ears and help with an ear infection. (Check with your doctor before doing this as symptoms and situations vary.)
•We've heard a little taste of Olive Oil can help get rid of a cough that's coming from an itch or a "tickle" in the back of the throat. Sounds like it would work and it can't hurt to try.
Olive Oil For Your Pets
•We always coated our Dog's food with Olive Oil to get rid of Hot Spots (dry, itchy spots on the Skin). After about a week, there was an improvement -- after about two weeks -- they were gone!
•We haven't tested this one, but have heard you can mix Olive Oil with cat food to help control hairballs.
•Use Olive Oil to help remove tics.
•Olive Oil can help get sticky matted hair separated.
And on, and on, and on,...:ha:

This is a quick view from the car on Makarska fish market. This is common way of fish sale here. After fishing all fish is sold directly in the harbour from the boats. Thats why we allways have fresh and high quality fish.

Ante - that dried ham is my husband's favourite no matter what it is called!! And Seweryn - that fat bacon is perfect for making the best sausages - in Africa we used to call it spek. Good food is the same the world over - I went up to a German butcher here and asked him for spek as I didn't know what else to call it, and he brought me just what I wanted. The sausages turned out perfectly! Now I am hungry!!

It is also called "špek" here, which is derived from German Speck. :D Lol, this world is so small. Bôčik is also one of the words you can use to describe this kind of meat... LOOOOOL.

Ante asked me to him get this book thru Amazon... he couldn't pay thru paypal or something. New book was about $20.00 but I got a used one for $7.25 --looks like new! So I payed it & tried to get it shipped to him but they wouldn't ship to Croatia. They shipped it to me & got it in 3-4 days. At post office, I sent it "cheapest" & almost fell over when I saw $31.40. Guy said they now fly mail overseas instead of by ship. Maybe that's why so fast. Now, if they could just ship plants in 4 days huh?
You're very welcome Ante.

Our cities look the same. Half ruins/half buildings all over the place, "protected" by UNESCO and just across the street you can see completely reconstructed barocco, rococco,... style buildings. Blah, I hate those styles. Modern looks much better. Mediterranean (don't get me wrong) style looks very... cheap and poor to me. :)
Yeah, yeah, I know... architecture. Not my field of interest. :ha:

Nothing exotic this high. Sabal minor, Brahea armata and W. Filifera.
Only one of each? And what will they be pollinated by? :)
Brahea armata looks amazing when it starts to bloom, really a beautiful palm. Sabal's more of a Florida type plant. :drum:
So you are making it into more than just an Olive garden, more like subtropical lush garden... and when you add naners... Beautiful, I can see it almost clearly.
What was the reason for those palms. To make the scene more picturesque or to make shade for something that's not yet there?

I don't see fruit.I don't believe it's ornamental.It's tall because it's never pruned and it's probably 70yrs. old or more.
A different tree no fruit either, this one does fruit but not this year I guess
