This is my first foray into the world of bananas!
My friend xmoose got me interested in them. I haven't started to grow any but look forward to doing so. I'm not sure which ones to start with. I live in Maryland at the moment and would love any feedback.

Just wait until saltydad (http://www.bananas.org/member-saltydad.html) comes on later today! In fact, go look at Saltydad's Profile (http://www.bananas.org/member-saltydad.html) for a list of the 'naners he grows in your area.

Welcome, Might I suggest Basjoo. They are the most cold hardy, but are inedible. Ask Salty if you want edible for the best in your area.

Welcome aboard Lunawolf (love the screen name!). Not sure where in the Free State you're located. I'm in a zone 7a. I have only found 2 types that I have successfully overwintered outdoors, and thats with cutting them down to 2-3 ft. and mulching heavily with straw. They are my Basjoo, which do wonderfully, and my Chinese Yellow (Musella lasiocarpa). The Musella survived, but grew so slowly and remained so small that last week I dug it and brought it inside for the winter along with the rest of my nanas. I hope for fruit from my Dwarf Cavendish because it's in a large pot and isn't cut down over the winter but grows (at a very slow pace) over the winter in my living room. But the list is long of those you can grow outside spring and summer and then overwinter inside. As Richard says, take a look at my profile for the listing. Where are you located?

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I live in Bryans Road, MD which shows to be in zone 7 and 8. I'm thinking of just starting with ornamental indoor plants for now since the cold weather is upon us or will be soon. I will be delving more into all or your profiles to pick your brains for ideas.
