First frost for us too tonight (wow, this cold spell is getting really far south)! I didnt have enough time to bring all my tropicals in (including my leafless, dormant banana) so I covered them all with this cloth like thing for shrubs. I ran out for one of my hibiscus so I have towels on that. Im hoping it works, but we shall see. Maybe if Im lucky the coast will save us yet again, but eventually its going to come, so mine as well be now!

Good luck!

WOW, browndrake, That is early especially for a zone 7, but in the west the weather is much more variable (which is a good thing, and a bad thing).

And our first frost defiantely came this morning, but even the hibiscuses dont look damaged, so as far as I can see the growing season shall go on (for a little longer anyway). My first frost is around early to mid november, so I guess Im right on schedule.

Yeah, Denver's first frost came and left. Now we're enjoying 70's for a while, followed by lows of 25-40 haha.

bikoro, all is not lost, the bloom should continue as long as you dont have any hard freezes in the meantime...

That's spooky! Ours came about a month early. First week of October, we had 2 nights at around 39 degrees F, Ouch! By October 6, the 7' tall Giant Sweet plantain had taken some damage so I had to dig it up, pot it, & bring it in.
This is what it looked like at 1:40 am this morning (11-8-09), after a month of being inside:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=26326&size=1

It has 3 healthy leaves (all about the same size) & one new leaf coming on!
By October 9, three 7-10 foot Blue Java pups had taken some damage so I dug those up, potted, & brought them in. The storage room is so crowded, all I could do was get shots of the upper leaves and a p-stem. The lower leaves all yellowed & died. Cant believe all the plants I had to bring in early.
Anyway, here's some shots of the Blue Javas I took at around 1:40 am this morning:

Went ahead & brought in the Ruby Siam & Gran Nain the same day. Good thing cause the Siam lost all but one leaf and a new leaf that was pushing up. The Gran Nain, though, didnt lose any leaves!
Here they are. Took this pic at around 1:40 am this morning:

Anyway, this is how my nanners look after being potted inside for 1 month. They probably wont have much leaf left by spring but they will very likely survive. If they lose too much leaf, I'll dry them up & let them go dormant.

Hey Bikoro :). I'm not too surprised, myself. Been noticing that a lot of plants will tend to flower if they go through a cold shock. That's a trick I used to get one of my coffee trees to make coffee beans. Worked super!! Dont know much about Basjoo flowers but I DO wish ya the best of luck!!

We might get down to 34 tonight and get frosty. (currently 45F@ 2AM) What is going on??? This might be possible for Dec 8th (and maybe Thanksgiving), but NOT Nov 8th. This is just insane.. I'm extremely worried this is going to be a brutal year. Winter is usually 2 months, Dec & Jan, but I'm thinking it could be a 4 month winter if we're unlucky

Totally crazy this year! Winter here is only 3 months Dec-Feb but looks like 4 or 5 months, this time, yuch! Been warm enough for t-shirts here on Christmas but dont think that'll happen now. Just hope we dont get another ice-storm disaster like in 2007. That left us in the dark for a week, ouch!

I can only imagine how those ice storms are. So we got down to 39.1 last night, so could have been worse.

39.1 is Def no fun but this is how the whole city looked about 3 days after the storm hit:

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=20679&size=1

Cars, trucks, & even some houses were crushed by splitting & falling trees. Heard transformer things, on electric poles, exploding all night, the first night when it hit! Just glad we had gas heating cause our lines snapped off the house by 3 falling trees.
Oklahoma's famous for being dry But, for years now, we've been getting Lots of rain & that gets Real spooky now in the winter! Just hope it never happens again!
Still, 34's spooky enough for nanners! Be sure an keep them safe :).

I was reminded of this thread when I saw Al Gore's photo in the current Costco Connections magazine. My wife remarked that he looks like he's dead (as been embalmed). Maybe he's scared to death over all this talk about cold weather!!! :ha:

haha, see even if it's RECORD cold this year, he'll say like.. Well, sure there is record ice but that's because it is global warming :)

Nah, he says "global climate change" now, so he can use a more general alarm. I still see some researchers who haven't caught on and use the gw phrase.
