Believe these Orinoco are about ready for harvesting. Any suggestions of harvesting now or waiting for more yellowing? \

When it's a variety I've never harvested before, I always wait until I see at least one finger that is clearly turning yellow, and harvest just that finger -- often it is damaged an not indicative of the ripeness of the bunch. Orinoco in my climate looks very yellowish even when not really filled out and mature.

Where are you located? By your name maybe Ohio? If so there are several others there.

Cut down a nice fat bunch of SH3640. Almost forgot to remember the #1 rule in S Fla --- when the first few fingers turn solid yellow cut the bunch down. The tree ratz, aka squirrels, did a job on three fingers. Washed all the debris off and saved the bunch. And may I say --- the SH 3640 is one of the best tasting naners I grow. Went out and bought more cereal. :0517::0517::0517:

I'm enjoying a giant perfectly ripe 14 oz. Tigua while posting. :ha::ha::ha:
On September 20, 2017 Hurricane Maria took the jungle canopy and smashed it to the jungle floor. That gave sunlight and an opportunity to grow for many plants. My jungle was littered with bananas growing wild for as far as I can throw and given the elevation that I'm throwing from they go far.
Looking down at the jungle the other day I noticed a large banana plant with a heavy lean and this morning it was missing from view. So I took a hike down the mountain and came back with a huge 80 lb. bunch of Iholena and also grabbed a small bunch of Manini on way.
Both of these bananas are great for hardwood grilling and get a nice smoked flavor.

First bunch of Reds coming in. Would like to know when most would recommend harvesting. They're starting to turn green, but wasn't sure how long to wait. Perhaps until there's yellowing too?

My very humble advice is to harvest several fingers and see how long they take to ripen and if there good. Unless you can leave them on till they ripen. I think another good way is to notice when one or two of the fruit start splitting, or being eaten by raccoons, which shows the fruit are starting to ripen. Anyhow, good luck!!!!!!!!!!! :nanadrink::nanadrink::nanadrink::nanadrink:

These White Pisang Awak are probably the most interesting banana in our collection ( :ha::ha::ha: according to visitors :waving:)
and even though this is a terrible 64 lb. bunch it happens to be the largest one we've ever harvested from a Whitey. :lurk:
We crossed this bunch with a variegated type so we are hoping to get some seeds that produce variegated bananas. :woohoonaner:

Harvested this 3/4 filled bunch yesterday. Its mature enough to turn yellow and has enough meat on it to eat. We got hit with an early freeze down to around 28F in early November which is pretty unusual. I double bagged all my hanging bunches except for one. The trees are completely brown but the bagged bunches are green. The one bunch not bagged has turned black.

Raja Puri! So my Raja Puri fruit decided to ripen yellow when was away for a week… after 5+ months of waiting and I wasn’t there when I needed to be! When I cut the stalk down half the bananas fell off they were so ripe. About 7 hands. However, they are all fantastic and get better by the day; a sweet and tangy flavor as described. I planted in late Feb. last year, flowered in late September. Pro’s: grows and produces fast, lots of pups, a short 7 feet, nice tasting fruit, was easy to grow. Cons: took longer to ripen that expected in zone 10; ratty looking rachis (or is it considered the peduncle?) http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=65798&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65798&ppuser=17395)

Okay, sorry for the long radio silence. Early last September I went in for a routine mammogram and came out with a diagnosis of invasive cancer. Tottering home in shock, I glanced up at my Gros Michels and saw Thing One had made me a flower to cheer me up. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=65918&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65918&ppuser=22470)
Doing banana math (since the previous three GM productions had taken 9 months apiece) I figured I would have bananas about the time I finished with all the necessary evils. It truly gave me something to look forward to.
Today, after too many surgeries, 6 rounds of chemo and 5 weeks of radiation (one more to go) the sudden 80+ degree weather started turning some of the nanas yellow so down they came. It was tricky because the GMs are sandwiched between my Dwarf Brazilian, my Becky's Mystery (yes, Mark, probably the same variety which is why they are side by side for comparison) and my Panache figs. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=65917&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65917&ppuser=22470)
As Richard instructed almost three years ago, my husband sawed halfway through the pseudostem and then we struggled to get the supports out. Of course, the whole thing came crashing down but did manage to (narrowly) miss the Dwarf Brazilian, only knocking off one leaf. And here are the bouncing baby bananas! http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=65919&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=65919&ppuser=22470)

Not yet. I put it in the ground just about a year ago. The plant looks very healthy, but this was a pretty cold winter so I'm content to wait until it's ready. The Becky's Mystery went in beside it a few months later.
