Jananas Bananas

This past weekend I dug up over a dozen banana plants. These babies are tough! They have survived Hurricane Rita, salt waters, and floods. I believe there are at least three different varieties here. I planted three in the ground and potted the rest. I haven't trimmed them up yet, so pardon the rough around the edges look, but here they are:

We should call them the "Austin 12" :)

I wish I had more identification knowledge. I have been doing this since my Texas Star thread and have more officially un-named bananas as I have named. (though some of my "named" are questionable) I usually just tag them Texas natives so I don't get them mixed up.

This batch was a little different though. These were off a large lot in a neighborhood near the Gulf coast - the house was condemned and torn down after hurricane Rita came through. These were planted and cared for at one time, which is why I believe there are different varieties in this group. The physical characteristics are too different and too unique from one another to be the same banana "type" (wax, no wax, coloration, short and thick, tall and skinny, etc.).

I usually try to get pups off unknown, unattended mats around the countryside, super hardy types. How about I tag these "Gulf Coast 12" since I try to tie my tags in with where they came from? :)

Thanks for the comments Tony and Richard!
